Just right click copy before you jump to the next program. This works without Klipper, but Klipper also works with multiple selections, so you can load up from one app and then paste them to another in sequence without having to swap windows twice. Klipper is available in KDE 4 and works well with most system trays, including Gnome.

Klipper also has actions that can be enabled based on the type of thing coppied. This pops up a choice menu at the time of copy. Pattern matching is by regular expressions that are either typed or built with a GUI tool. Many useful templates are included by default.
