Here is an excellent talk about free software in Indiana schools by Mike Huffington. The program he got started, INAccess, was saving the state tens of millions of dollars by 2008 and was poised to save hundreds. There are many good reasons Huffington chose free software, especially gnu/linux, for the job but chief was that free software was the best available at any price. The other reasons were easy management, scalability, stability and clear upgrade paths.

Microsoft was busy trying to sucker the state at the time and the current state of inAccess may be another good reason to hate Microsoft. Huffman claims Microsoft offered a lot of “special deals” but that these were worthless. Government should be less interested in unique showcases and three year demonstrations than something that works well everywhere at an affordable price. Under Huffman, “special deals” would be accepted if they applied to the entire state for a period of ten years. It seems Huffman moved on in 2009. If this is the result of Microsoft political intrigue, it would be pure corruption that deserved contempt and hatred. All states are facing budget crisis that could be partly remedied by simply dumping expensive software. Microsoft keeps their deals secret to screw the public this way. Demand to see the contracts when it’s public money.
