Maybe the 451 Group is just trying to appear “balanced” (remember who paid for the study). I don’t really know what population sample was chosen for the survey and how; One needs to register to access the PDF. I also know that many companies use GNU/Linux without even knowing it (CentOS is most common).

However, we must also acknowledge that the continued, wider availability of Microsoft’s Azure is having and will continue to have an impact on the market and may help Microsoft mitigate the cloud connection to Linux, according to cloud users and mixed-environment shops with which we’ve spoken.

The chances of Microsoft being able to lure “cloud” users away from the obvious scalability of free software are about as good as Microsoft’s chances of getting people to move away from their pdf based document archive systems. It’s not happening.

They were careful to note that their survey found more Windows to Linux migration than Unix to Linux and that it was not all about servers. Free software is moving to desktops at big companies too. I submitted this to Slashdot the other day, and the article referenced above also says the same:

One of the more interesting findings from the survey pertains to migrations to Linux from Windows. More than 36% of respondents said their Linux deployments in the last two years had been from Windows. More than 31% were moving to Linux from Unix,
