I like to think of it as electronic colonialism. The masters over these electronic colonies attract users into the colony only to render the users helpless to help themselves and divided from sharing with their community.

Education is about learning to learn, Scientific method on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_method . I compare the Microsoft products to the the cattle weighing stations in uses at ranches: cattle is herded, one at a time onto a locking platform to be processed. A dual-gate effect occurs. In Microsoft products, you pay the entry fee (A gate in front of you opens) while a gate closes behind you (the EULA).

Does this mean that everyone with an illegal copy of Windows can get the $7 upgrade offer to be fully legal? My College pays many times that for our legal licenses?

State and commerce have not been properly separated for ages (neither has religion). By inference, the same goes for educational institutions and commerce.

Schools must teach methods, not train for Microsoft products.

The question of the purpose of education hangs over this. Is education about inculcating humane and inquisitive values into an informed and knowledgeable individual? Or is it to produce job monkey peons? There is a much support for the second approach. Training for Microsoft is consistent with the second approach.
