ender2070true but nvidia cards at least work betterNov 14 06:16
oiaohmDefine better ender2070Nov 14 06:17
oiaohmIf you class better being designed in such a way they can kernel panic the OS is fine.Nov 14 06:17
ender2070better = higher frame rate, drivers that work on most kernelsNov 14 06:18
oiaohmSo you don't care about lost stablitity.Nov 14 06:18
ender2070i get more stabilityNov 14 06:18
ender2070nvidia hardware itself is more stableNov 14 06:19
oiaohmAgain a myth ender2070Nov 14 06:19
ender2070experienceNov 14 06:19
oiaohmIts a myth.  Stablity issues of ATI on Linux and Windows are mostly driver linked with a few rare hardware problems.Nov 14 06:20
ender2070ati != nvidiaNov 14 06:20
oiaohmNeither ATI or Intel by passed the X11 stack.Nov 14 06:21
oiaohmSo both caught the stablity problems of the X11 stack.Nov 14 06:21
ender2070i'd like you to prove how logically my system is more stable on nouveu running @ 70C+ vs my binary blob which runs the fans when it should and keeps it under 60CNov 14 06:21

ender2070oh i agreeNov 14 06:25

ender2070yeahNov 14 06:26
ender2070i guess some of my bias comes from my friend who owned atiNov 14 06:26
oiaohmThe funny thing with ATI open source drivers run colder than the closed soruce ones.Nov 14 06:26
ender2070he always seemed to be behind in distros and kernels because his drivers forced him to be behindNov 14 06:26
oiaohmA redhat coder was better at designing power management than the ATI programmers ender2070Nov 14 06:27
oiaohmATi drivers have been poorly maintained.Nov 14 06:28
ender2070yesNov 14 06:28
oiaohmIts not exactly hardware issues.Nov 14 06:28
ender2070nvidia was beating them at closed drivers on linuxNov 14 06:28
ender2070still are, at closed driversNov 14 06:28
oiaohmIf ATI hardware was not as solid as what it was it would have been killed by its poor drivers.Nov 14 06:29
oiaohmBest glitch I ever found in ati was shutting card down due to too much heat.  In process turning off on card cooling fan.Nov 14 06:29
oiaohmBefore turing off GPU.Nov 14 06:30
ender2070the technology in ATI cards should be pushing higher numbers than what they are producing now, i'd still blame their bad driversNov 14 06:30
oiaohmOn Linux is a mixed problem.Nov 14 06:30
oiaohmNvidia bipassed the trouble making DRI1 stack.Nov 14 06:31
oiaohmATI and Intel did not.Nov 14 06:31
oiaohmSo they have taken massive performance hits and stablity hits there.Nov 14 06:31
oiaohmThen add in poor quality drivers you have a perfect storm of hell.Nov 14 06:31
ender2070yeahNov 14 06:32
oiaohmgalluim3d vmware backed combind with KMS and DRI2 should see intel and ati back on more of a fair compete footing.Nov 14 06:32
oiaohmSo far Nvidia has not agreed to provide KMS what is kind criticial to system stablity.Nov 14 06:33
ender2070huhNov 14 06:33
ender2070KMS is for flicker free startsNov 14 06:33
oiaohmKMS also displays kernel panics.Nov 14 06:34
oiaohmIn case they happen.Nov 14 06:34
oiaohmAlso allows X11 server not to require root user.Nov 14 06:34
ender2070ahhNov 14 06:34
oiaohmAnd allows more than 1 X11 server to be run side by side.Nov 14 06:34

ender2070the guy I know who did it ran LFSNov 14 06:36
oiaohmWithout KMS when you do a vt switch both programs have to try to negiated a change over of control in userspace.Nov 14 06:36

ender2070stuff i read didnt sensationalize it so muchNov 14 06:39
oiaohmvga arbortor also comming makes it even more messy.   Allowing mult vesa cards to be used side by side in Linux.  So ATI Nvidia and intel card in one system will become possiable.  The way Nvidia over rides the stack in binary driver will become problem.Nov 14 06:39
oiaohmI have suffered from the vt switch fault from time to time ender2070Nov 14 06:40

oiaohmOver 10 years ago ender2070Nov 14 06:46
oiaohmIts not a recently added feature.Nov 14 06:47
oiaohmThis is why I have problems when people say Nvidia drivers work.Nov 14 06:47

oiaohmLot of useful things don't work with them.Nov 14 06:47

ender2070if gaming isnt a requirementNov 14 06:50
ender2070then ati and nvidia should both be talked downNov 14 06:50

ender2070my next laptop is gonna have intel graphicsNov 14 06:51

oiaohmintel has kms and dri2  so  can be run with X11 server as a normal user.Nov 14 06:51
oiaohmNice secuirty improvement.Nov 14 06:51
ender2070that all makes senseNov 14 06:52
oiaohmCan switch to a terminal away from a locked up X11 server as well.Nov 14 06:52
oiaohmDue to KMS as well.Nov 14 06:52
oiaohmNow I hope X11 application transfer between servers gets brought back in future.Nov 14 06:53
oiaohmIe server locks up pull its applications off it and keep on going.Nov 14 06:53
ender2070that would be coolNov 14 06:55
oiaohmender2070: recently intel in mesa found how to speed up gpu instruction convertion to card by over 100 percent.Nov 14 06:55

ender2070oiaohm - in ati's case, the volunteers are doing a better job than their 3 man teamNov 14 07:06

oiaohmATI case some of the developers in the team.Nov 14 07:07

ender2070DaemonFC - harder to do here, the government really does love to collect its tax dollars. SIN numbers get cross checkedNov 14 17:45

ender2070DaemonFC - you know nothing about Canada, why are you arguing?Nov 14 17:46
DaemonFCthey estimate that Social Security takes in $7 billion a year from illegal Mexicans using forged documents to get a jobNov 14 17:46
ender2070the only way an illegal is working here is under the tableNov 14 17:46
DaemonFCthe government is probably OK with that tooNov 14 17:47
ender2070at which point they have no employment rightsNov 14 17:47

DaemonFCwho funds their campaigns? The rich people hiring and exploiting the illegals.Nov 14 17:47
DaemonFCexactlyNov 14 17:47
DaemonFCthe rich always get whatever they wantNov 14 17:47
DaemonFCusually subsidized by law abiding legal citizens in the middle class or lowerNov 14 17:47
ender2070they also can't get unemployment unless they are laid off from a job they were paying taxes atNov 14 17:47
DaemonFCender2070, It doesn't work any differently in Canada I'm sureNov 14 17:48
DaemonFCthey may have stronger laws, but that's all on paperNov 14 17:48
DaemonFCthere's a way around any law if you have enough moneyNov 14 17:48
ender2070alright so someone will be working for $2 /hr, that doesnt effect meNov 14 17:48
DaemonFCcorrupt public officials happen in every countryNov 14 17:48
DaemonFCsure it doesNov 14 17:48
ender2070explain why it doesNov 14 17:49
DaemonFCit affects you and your fellow legal citizens who could have had the job for appropriate wagesNov 14 17:49
ender2070lolNov 14 17:49
DaemonFCnow that job is being taken by an illegal who is undercutting the minimum wageNov 14 17:49
ender2070if you're caught not paying taxes, they use the highest tier to calculate what you owe themNov 14 17:50
DaemonFCender2070, You might not take a minimum wage job, but you get your taxes increased to cover social service programs like unemployment for your fellow legal citizensNov 14 17:50
ender2070and the employer can also be liable and be required to pay their E.I and CPP paymentsNov 14 17:50
DaemonFCso you're subsidizing corporate welfare every time you pay taxesNov 14 17:50
ender2070Canada isn't USANov 14 17:50
ender2070its a lot easier to track people who are evading taxesNov 14 17:51
DaemonFCender2070, It's like when there's illegals working here, they tie up a job that some legal citizen could have taken, then everyone else gets taxed to cover unemployment, child care, medicaid coverage for them and the kids...Nov 14 17:51
DaemonFCfood stampsNov 14 17:51
ender2070we have tax tiers hereNov 14 17:52
ender2070the rich pay the most taxes here, stillNov 14 17:52
DaemonFCender2070, Technically, taxes in the US are like that tooNov 14 17:52
DaemonFCbut Bush basically broke that system by cutting taxes at the very topNov 14 17:52
ender2070i dont care that the upper class is paying my unemploymentNov 14 17:52
DaemonFCso our government is bleeding a lot faster than it was beforeNov 14 17:52
ender2070Harper started doing that to usNov 14 17:53
DaemonFCender2070, The government of the US is destabilized by the Bush tax cuts more so than the invasion and occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan put togetherNov 14 17:53
DaemonFCBush cut their taxes from 39% to like 34%Nov 14 17:53
ender2070DaemonFC - typical right wing policyNov 14 17:53
DaemonFCender2070, I don't see Obama in any rush to repeal the cutsNov 14 17:54
ender2070right wing policy generalized: the government can't have any surplus funds at all, everything should be spent and taxes will balance it back to $0Nov 14 17:54
ender2070thats their goalNov 14 17:54
ender2070not always what happens in practiceNov 14 17:54
DaemonFCender2070, Never what happensNov 14 17:55
DaemonFCender2070, It really goes. Cut taxes for the rich to buy favor. Borrow money from China to replace the lost tax income. Keep spending high and wastefulNov 14 17:55
DaemonFCObama is not repealing the Bush tax cuts or pushing for itNov 14 17:56
DaemonFCor even asking Congress to do itNov 14 17:56
DaemonFCThat may be so he can bring their taxes back up to 39.4% with the healthcare bill and then let the Bush cuts expire in 2010Nov 14 17:57
DaemonFCthey'll be up to 44.4%Nov 14 17:57
DaemonFClolNov 14 17:57
DaemonFCand scrambling to get their assets into a Swiss bank accountNov 14 17:57
DaemonFCbeyond a certain amount of taxation on the rich, they start taking in less money than had they left it aloneNov 14 17:58
DaemonFCcause there's a threshold where the rich are scrambling to hide all their money in tax sheltersNov 14 17:58

DaemonFCMicrosoft hasn't learned their Vista lesson, that's why Windows 7 is not a runaway hit so far eitherNov 14 18:05
DaemonFCthey keep building it bigger, and some of that is OK if everyone jumps up and buys a faster PCNov 14 18:05
DaemonFCI think the real reason they got rid of things like Windows Movie Maker and such is cause they ran out of room on the discNov 14 18:06
DaemonFCan OS that manages to overrun a dual layer DVD should be enough to scare anyoneNov 14 18:07
DaemonFCUbuntu hasn't managed to outgrow a single 700 MB CD since it was first out in 2004Nov 14 18:07
DaemonFCwhy does Microsoft Windows need the 8.4 GB on a DL-DVD?Nov 14 18:08
DaemonFCit's piggish, is what it isNov 14 18:08
DaemonFCit's what's going to happen when they can't strip out any of the dead weight for fear of breaking thousands of binary applicationsNov 14 18:09
DaemonFCat least 2 GB of what Windows installs (in Vista anyway) is in the WinSxS folder, that's all backwards compatibility garbageNov 14 18:10
DaemonFCUbuntu itself, fully installed, is just under 2 GB on the diskNov 14 18:10
*ender2070_ (n=ender207@wcphamil47guise.grokspots.com) has joined #boycottnovellNov 14 18:10
DaemonFCMicrosoft's backwards compatibility fluff alone takes more disk space than an entire installation of UbuntuNov 14 18:11
ender2070_yay wirelessNov 14 18:11
DaemonFCthen on top of that 2 gigs, they still have to support that voice control abortion from Vista, and that alone gets another GB on your diskNov 14 18:12
DaemonFCcause they wouldn't want to break all 3 apps that ever actually tried to use itNov 14 18:12
DaemonFCit all adds up, so I highly suspect that over 4 GB of a Windows install is cruft, if not moreNov 14 18:13
DaemonFCthat may not sound like much to worry about unless you're using some kind of flash memory and space is at a premiumNov 14 18:13
