sebsebseb | yeah I was about to say | Apr 24 01:01 |
sebsebseb | ,but you got to use SIP to do Techbytes with RMS? | Apr 24 01:01 |
schestowitz | yes | Apr 24 01:01 |
sebsebseb | and maybe not provide the MP3 download? :D | Apr 24 01:01 |
schestowitz | we do ogg | Apr 24 01:02 |

sebsebseb | yeah, but I maen RMS might not want that episode to be in MP3 as well, since he is in it, you know | Apr 24 01:02 |
sebsebseb | schestowitz: and well if I was set up with this stuff, I could talk about Linux distro's and Mageia and so on | Apr 24 01:03 |

sebsebseb | schestowitz: and got any contact with Linus? can maybe get him to go on it later, altough he's more so in the open source camp really it seems, not free software | Apr 24 01:07 |
sebsebseb | schestowitz: Linux is under GPL, beause it's a good lisesne a good development model, not so much about the freedoms that are gained | Apr 24 01:07 |
Ender2070 | hey | Apr 24 01:07 |
sebsebseb | schestowitz: hence also why he doesn't want to lisence it under GPLv3 it seems | Apr 24 01:08 |

sebsebseb | well ok it doesn't do much and is rather uhmm alpha | Apr 24 01:09 |
schestowitz | [01:08] <Ender2070> does anyone know of other operating systems that are FLOSS | Apr 24 01:09 |
sebsebseb | ,but still an OS | Apr 24 01:09 |
schestowitz | It's not FLOSS, it's LOSS :-) | Apr 24 01:09 |
sebsebseb | schestowitz: uhmm? | Apr 24 01:09 |
sebsebseb | schestowitz: So when is RMS likely to be on Techbytes? | Apr 24 01:10 |
Ender2070 | hmm BSD | Apr 24 01:12 |
Ender2070 | doesnt really solve my issue though | Apr 24 01:12 |
sebsebseb | schestowitz: Why do you want Laurel L. Russwurm in a show? | Apr 24 01:12 |
sebsebseb | also what's the (CA) in brakets on that page? | Apr 24 01:12 |
Ender2070 | ewww | Apr 24 01:12 |
Ender2070 | what does Laurel have to do with FLOSS | Apr 24 01:12 |
sebsebseb | Ender2070: not much I guess, except being a Ubuntu user, Roy Schestowitz fan, a major Identica user, and going by identica something about her doing her own book with open fonts or something | Apr 24 01:13 |
Ender2070 | shes not an ubuntu user | Apr 24 01:13 |
Ender2070 | shes a windows user | Apr 24 01:13 |
sebsebseb | no as far as I know she uses Ubuntu, or if you want to be more exact, Ubuntu and Windows | Apr 24 01:13 |
Ender2070 | her dents are all canadian politics too | Apr 24 01:13 |
sebsebseb | indeed I have seen quite a few of her dents | Apr 24 01:14 |
sebsebseb | most of them don't interest me | Apr 24 01:14 |
Ender2070 | her so called book was designed in windows | Apr 24 01:14 |
sebsebseb | Ender2070: oh wait you got it wrong | Apr 24 01:14 |
sebsebseb | Ender2070: she complains about people not having avatars here and there as well | Apr 24 01:14 |
Ender2070 | she was complaining about not being able to use the fonts | Apr 24 01:14 |
Ender2070 | she didnt like the linux fonts, designed her book in windows and then got mad that she didnt have a royalty free license for the ms core fonts | Apr 24 01:15 |
sebsebseb | oh | Apr 24 01:15 |
Ender2070 | i follow her too but i've been one of her biggest critics | Apr 24 01:15 |
Ender2070 | she doesnt do anything, she just complains | Apr 24 01:15 |
Ender2070 | shes been using Flanigan as ammo for the left wing to attack harper, without filing a single police or rcmp report herself | Apr 24 01:16 |
sebsebseb | Ender2070: and she's a Roy Schestowitz fan like I said earlier | Apr 24 01:16 |
sebsebseb | and I think schestowitz is a fan of her as well | Apr 24 01:16 |
Ender2070 | he might be a fan of her | Apr 24 01:16 |
sebsebseb | Ender2070: ,but if she wants to gest talk about techrights and stuff to do with Linux and what not on Techbytes, well I am ok with that | Apr 24 01:17 |
Ender2070 | it would explain why shes allowed to have political dents republished in this channel | Apr 24 01:17 |
sebsebseb | I guess schestowitz would ask her some tech related questions, and she answers and yep :) | Apr 24 01:17 |
Ender2070 | i was removed from being republished for having political dents/tweets | Apr 24 01:17 |
sebsebseb | Ender2070: oh? | Apr 24 01:18 |
Ender2070 | yeah you haven't noticed? | Apr 24 01:18 |
sebsebseb | well I guess I had before or something, just not really thought of it though ,in that case | Apr 24 01:19 |
sebsebseb | ,but when you say it indeed, there hasn't really been much coming in from ender | Apr 24 01:19 |
sebsebseb | Ender2070: altough schestowitz has wikileaks coming in, and as far as I know that's polotics! | Apr 24 01:19 |
Ender2070 | just when roy pushes a link to one of my tweets which he finds emusing | Apr 24 01:19 |
Ender2070 | amusing | Apr 24 01:19 |
Ender2070 | wikileaks is approved politics though | Apr 24 01:20 |
sebsebseb | Ender2070: a part of me would want to unsubscribe from laurel and bkuhm, but well I get loads of other peoples junk coming in anyway | Apr 24 01:20 |
sebsebseb | I am subscribed to a few people who are unlikely to subscribe to me, bkuhm and popey for example | Apr 24 01:21 |
sebsebseb | Ender2070: and since I am in the Ubuntu group on there, oh yes I get a lot of spam | Apr 24 01:21 |
Ender2070 | i have an audience that isn't all FLOSS people so I end up hanging out on twitter most of the time | Apr 24 01:21 |
sebsebseb | oh and from the Linux outlaws group as well, by the way I been in the group on identica for quite a while, and been in the IRC before, but still not listended to a Linux outlaws | Apr 24 01:22 |
Ender2070 | i only use identica if im publishing links I want people to see from both services | Apr 24 01:22 |
sebsebseb | well Identica has people who aren't geeks on it as well I guess, and those who aren't much of a geek I guess | Apr 24 01:22 |
Ender2070 | not very many | Apr 24 01:23 |
Ender2070 | laurel was boasting about her 100+ dents in one day | Apr 24 01:23 |
Ender2070 | twitter would laugh | Apr 24 01:23 |
sebsebseb | Ender2070: well I may be able to get a Scottish woman to sign up, she uses Ubuntu and WIndows, but new to Ubuntu really and uhmm | Apr 24 01:23 |
sebsebseb | well not really that much into computers, wants to learn more though :) | Apr 24 01:23 |
Ender2070 | good for her but she won't learn by using ubuntu | Apr 24 01:23 |
sebsebseb | Ender2070: I thought laurel's messages go on Twitter as well | Apr 24 01:24 |
sebsebseb | well can learn some stuff by using Ubuntu, but then yes it's best to move on to another distro to learn more stuff :) | Apr 24 01:24 |
Ender2070 | I learned the most from Gentoo | Apr 24 01:24 |
sebsebseb | also Linux doesn't have to be really technical, I mean loads of commands and so on | Apr 24 01:25 |
Ender2070 | it doesnt have to be | Apr 24 01:26 |
Ender2070 | im in the market actually for something different than what we have right now | Apr 24 01:26 |
sebsebseb | Ender2070: so am I | Apr 24 01:26 |
sebsebseb | Ender2070: Mageia :D | Apr 24 01:26 |
sebsebseb | except | Apr 24 01:26 |
Ender2070 | I want to get away from the idea of files/directories | Apr 24 01:26 |
sebsebseb | the first stable version on June 1st, will be very much so like Mandriva really, well the old Mandriva | Apr 24 01:26 |
Ender2070 | im thinking more radical than Mageia | Apr 24 01:26 |
Ender2070 | there needs to be a filesystem that at least hides itself from the user | Apr 24 01:27 |
sebsebseb | ,but then Gnome 3 and such in the next release it seems, and well Mageia should start getting quite the user base I think | Apr 24 01:27 |
sebsebseb | I think we need another good distro to compete against Ubuntu | Apr 24 01:27 |
Ender2070 | gives the user a tag based system | Apr 24 01:27 |
sebsebseb | ,but you may not like me saying it really, but yep Fedora as well | Apr 24 01:27 |
sebsebseb | also Fedora isn't really for the new users at the moment, well it can be sort of, but Linux Mint would be more suitable for example | Apr 24 01:28 |
Ender2070 | for new users | Apr 24 01:28 |
sebsebseb | altough yeah there's this Fusion Linux now | Apr 24 01:28 |
sebsebseb | I did download the ISO | Apr 24 01:28 |
Ender2070 | I'd still suggest Fedora | Apr 24 01:28 |
sebsebseb | and burnt to a DVD, but some issue with teh DVD it semes | Apr 24 01:28 |
sebsebseb | Fusion Linux based on Fedora, and like LInux Mint, well that's something | Apr 24 01:28 |
Ender2070 | Fusion Linux kind of sucks | Apr 24 01:28 |
sebsebseb | codecs, and loads of software by defualt | Apr 24 01:28 |
Ender2070 | it went beyond just adding codecs | Apr 24 01:28 |
sebsebseb | Ender2070: your not the target audiance though | Apr 24 01:29 |
Ender2070 | I should be | Apr 24 01:29 |
that's one I will have to listen to -> (05:03:48 PM) schestowitz: RMS has replied and agreed to be on techbytes | Apr 24 01:29
Ender2070 | I dont really like installing codecs either | Apr 24 01:29 |
Ender2070 | but id rather not use Fusion, which comes with proprietary software | Apr 24 01:29 |
Ender2070 | Teamviewer | Apr 24 01:29 |
sebsebseb | Ender2070: also we arent' the target audiance of Ubuntu 11.04, in fact take a read of this one http://www.zdnet.com/blog/open-source/ubuntu-linux-1104s-target-audience-casual-windows-users/8723?tag=mantle_skin;content | Apr 24 01:29 |

sebsebseb | twitter: indeed :) | Apr 24 01:29 |
sebsebseb | twitter: also I am trying to listen in order, but well, I may have to brake that for the RMS episode, if I am still way behind | Apr 24 01:30 |
sebsebseb | twitter: so far been listening in order from the test episode, to the well next one I am meant to be listening to | Apr 24 01:30 |
sebsebseb | Ender2070: having propritary software pre installed, makes things easier, for new users though, useualley | Apr 24 01:31 |
sebsebseb | people who have come from Windows or Mac OS X | Apr 24 01:31 |
Ender2070 | it doesnt have to come with teamviewer and stuff ill want to uninstall after | Apr 24 01:31 |
Ender2070 | I just want Fedora + Codecs | Apr 24 01:31 |
sebsebseb | Ender2070: oh sure it would be nice if most software was free software, but no we live in a world mose people use money, so well dream on | Apr 24 01:32 |
sebsebseb | and where most people are consumers | Apr 24 01:32 |
sebsebseb | also known as idiots by many companies I guess | Apr 24 01:32 |
somehow I don't have time to listen to any of them | Apr 24 01:32
I've downloaded a few but never got around to it | Apr 24 01:33
sebsebseb | twitter: I would rather listen to music on the computer, than voices, but Techbytes well it's worth the listen, well not always | Apr 24 01:33 |
sebsebseb | Techbytes it depends really, sometimes they talk aout a load of junk and it's like uh | Apr 24 01:33 |
sebsebseb | other times it's great :) | Apr 24 01:33 |
sebsebseb | also if I am doing something else on the computer and it's not that interesting, a lot of what they say, I wont' really take in properly | Apr 24 01:33 |
sebsebseb | twitter: I have time, but wel, I want to read Linux news online, or chat on IRC, but uhmm there's a Richard Stallman video I still haven't seen properly, also I still havent' seen that video of Mark Shuttleworth (well had it open on the page before I think) at UDS in Florida in October 2010 announceing Unity for 11.04 and that | Apr 24 01:35 |
sebsebseb | for what should be obvious enough reasons, if you have seen enough stuff that I have typed :D well yeah it should be quite obvious why seeing that Mark video hasn't really been a priority for me :) | Apr 24 01:35 |
sebsebseb | I saws a short video of him recently at Dell with someone, talking about things | Apr 24 01:36 |
sebsebseb | a video from Januarey I think it was | Apr 24 01:36 |
Ender2070 | I dont have a problem with Unity anymore | Apr 24 01:36 |
sebsebseb | Ender2070: Oh? | Apr 24 01:36 |
Ender2070 | seems to be okay for netbooks | Apr 24 01:36 |
sebsebseb | well it's got the copyright assignment issue still sure, but | Apr 24 01:36 |
Ender2070 | I dont contribute code | Apr 24 01:36 |
sebsebseb | well I been thinking about things as well | Apr 24 01:37 |
sebsebseb | how for example Firefox 4 and Chrome are going to say Linux in user agent strings and not a distro anymore | Apr 24 01:37 |
sebsebseb | unless running on Android for example, and well how maybe | Apr 24 01:37 |
Ender2070 | it'll take a lot to replace jolicloud on my netbook though | Apr 24 01:37 |
sebsebseb | that's a goo thing really | Apr 24 01:37 |
Ender2070 | user agent strings need to die | Apr 24 01:37 |
sebsebseb | I mean, Ubuntuk, Fedora, Mageia, Mandriva, Linux Mint, Fusion Linux, PC Linux OS, Arch Linux, Gentoo, Slackware, Sabayon, the Ender2070 fan club Linux distro, well they are all Linux distro's | Apr 24 01:38 |
sebsebseb | they are all Linux, ok expect for that last one I guess, because as far as I know that doesn't really exist, but well if you were Hannah Montana you would have such an OS, yep Hannoah Montana based on Kubuntu exists | Apr 24 01:38 |
sebsebseb | Hannah Montana OS above | Apr 24 01:38 |
Ender2070 | I could make my own Fedora spin | Apr 24 01:38 |
sebsebseb | we have types of Linux distro, as you know, Destkop Linux, server Linux, robotic LInux, etc | Apr 24 01:39 |
Ender2070 | non linux: Haiku, Solaris, PC-BSD, Free-BSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, L4, Hurd | Apr 24 01:39 |
sebsebseb | ,but distro's that are in the type, or at least for desktop and servers, tend to run pretty much the same software really, a Linux kernel and xorg and what not | Apr 24 01:39 |
sebsebseb | so maybe it's a good thing that most Firefox and Chrome user agents strings will just say Linux instead of Linux and a distro like I was saying | Apr 24 01:40 |
sebsebseb | or at least when Ubuntu loses quite a lot more users to other distro's :) | Apr 24 01:40 |
sebsebseb | and distrowise things are more even. | Apr 24 01:40 |
sebsebseb | at the moment if I see a Firefox user agent string that says only Linux in it, I would probbly think they were running Ubuntu hmm | Apr 24 01:40 |
sebsebseb | anyway whilst on my 11.04 Beta 2 where I did the Gnome 3 ppa wrongly and ended up with a cross between Gnome 2 and Gnome 3 instead, I am happy with it only saying Linux in the UA :) | Apr 24 01:41 |
Ender2070 | ahh | Apr 24 01:41 |
sebsebseb | Ender2070: why ahh? | Apr 24 01:42 |
sebsebseb | Ender2070: anyway yep that's right I have tried Unity 3D and 2D, not customising the compiz version with hte compiz settings though, and want Gnome 3 working properly, but now waiting for the final | Apr 24 01:44 |
sebsebseb | also had isseus with a lot of Live CD's where I was meant to be able to get Gnome Shell | Apr 24 01:44 |
sebsebseb | anyway | Apr 24 01:44 |
sebsebseb | Ender2070: I have also been thinking about Unity, and the software centre offering commerical apps, and the software suggestions in Unity and that kind of thing, how they are training wheels reallly. | Apr 24 01:44 |
sebsebseb | newbie/noob features | Apr 24 01:44 |
sebsebseb | and well quite a lot of people move on from noob distros anyway, to better distro's, so :D | Apr 24 01:45 |
sebsebseb | really Ubuntu should be like Linux Mint, what for many is a first stepping stone distro, their first distro, after using WIndows or/and Mac OS X | Apr 24 01:45 |
Ender2070 | tried unity earlier in virtualbox and it didnt work | Apr 24 01:46 |
Ender2070 | lol | Apr 24 01:46 |
sebsebseb | and where quite a lot of the helpers are using other distro's, well that's the case with Linux Mint, in the case of Ubuntu not quite | Apr 24 01:46 |
sebsebseb | one of the community members I find out last night, is using Debian not Ubuntu | Apr 24 01:46 |
sebsebseb | also it does work in Virtualbox if you set things up right, and I can give you a great link about that | Apr 24 01:46 |
Ender2070 | sure | Apr 24 01:46 |
sebsebseb | not tried it msyelf in Virtualbox, but yes, the link I can give you, do what it says, and it should work | Apr 24 01:47 |
sebsebseb | oh and you would need some sort of hardware acceleration on the host I think | Apr 24 01:47 |
debian will probably modify that to day gnu/linux, gnu/hurd or gnu/bsd as appropriate -> sebsebseb: how for example Firefox 4 and Chrome are going to say Linux in user agent strings and not a distro anymore | Apr 24 01:47
I should check the user agent string right now. | Apr 24 01:48
sebsebseb | twitter: Firefox Linux user agent strings, most of them, would say the distro that was being used as well, but not anymore | Apr 24 01:48 |
sebsebseb | starting with Firefox 4 | Apr 24 01:48 |
sebsebseb | and Chrome and Chromreium have already done it or will do so soon, do something exactly the same | Apr 24 01:48 |
sebsebseb | and why, because Internet Explorer 9 was removing more stuff from the UA | Apr 24 01:48 |
sebsebseb | they remove a bit more than just the distro's by the way | Apr 24 01:48 |
sebsebseb | and then you can't just change the user agent string like before with Firefox 4, to have it like before either | Apr 24 01:49 |
sebsebseb | twitter: and well as far as I know the only way to get a proper idea how many users are on a Linux distro, is to use user agent strings in browsers, or to have the distro sites them selves monitoring the downloads like Mozilla did with Firefox 4 http://glow.mozilla.org | Apr 24 01:50 |

sebsebseb | twitter: the not showing Ubuntu in Firefox user agent string anymore, effects yep Ubuntu/Canonical their apt site | Apr 24 01:53 |
sebsebseb | it detects for Ubuntu | Apr 24 01:53 |
sebsebseb | there was something on Launchpad about that | Apr 24 01:53 |
sebsebseb | twitter: and I like what MPT from the Canonical design team basically said on there, if they are going to show Android, then they should show the distro's, because there are loads of them | Apr 24 01:53 |
sebsebseb | not everyone is using Ubuntu | Apr 24 01:54 |
sebsebseb | twitter: if I look at my old bookmarks in a file, I could probably find the link for that, but not so much up for that | Apr 24 01:54 |
I have "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Konqueror/4.4; Linux) KHTML/4.4.5 (like Gecko)" with debian gnu/linux as my UA | Apr 24 01:55
sebsebseb | twitter: and then there's this idea that showing less info to web servers means more privacy, uh maybe so, but if I am on a Linux distro that I am happy using, then I want to tell website statistics that, and hope that someone will see that :) | Apr 24 01:55 |
sebsebseb | twitter: if I am on a distro that I don't really want to be telling website statistics that I am using such as Ubuntu for example, then well that's fine only having Linux showing :) | Apr 24 01:56 |
It's a user decision, but sometimes it's not a choice. Konqueror does domain specific UA to get around places that require IE and other idiot practices. | Apr 24 01:58
those idiot sites are usually not worth visiting but sometimes are forced by work - Microsoft is good at that kind of force | Apr 24 01:58
sebsebseb | twitter: no it used to be a user decission in the case of Firefox | Apr 24 01:58 |
sebsebseb | twitter: it is no longer a user decission as of Friefox 4 | Apr 24 01:58 |
that is foolish of Mozilla | Apr 24 01:58
sebsebseb | unless you uhmm well there's some sort of complete way to change the user agent string, but not recommended | Apr 24 01:59 |
sebsebseb | if you start adding in your own user agent string yourself, it will remove the part about using another distor | Apr 24 01:59 |
I'll bet Iceweasle keeps the feature | Apr 24 01:59
sebsebseb | I mean if you start adding in the distro yourself to the user agent string | Apr 24 01:59 |
sebsebseb | it will remove that | Apr 24 01:59 |
that can't be right | Apr 24 01:59
sebsebseb | in fact if you open up a profile that was used in Firefox 3 series, in Firefox 4, it will then remove the distro from the user agent string | Apr 24 01:59 |
sebsebseb | and yes it is | Apr 24 01:59 |
sebsebseb | I had a week or so messing around with the user agent string | Apr 24 02:00 |

this sounds like a malicious feature that sensible distros will remove, I'll have to read your page | Apr 24 02:00
I hate having to hack my browser to make it do what I want, that's part of the reason I use Konqueror | Apr 24 02:01
sebsebseb | twitter: I think I read that Seamonkey was going to get the change as well, but last time I used Seamonkey which wasn't that long ago, well it was ok :) not sure if I had the very latest version though | Apr 24 02:01 |
sebsebseb | yeah exactly bingo | Apr 24 02:01 |
sebsebseb | also they no longer show the user agent in about > Firefox in Firefox 4 which is something that got at me as well, but well recently I found out about a nice extention for showing user agent :D | Apr 24 02:02 |
sebsebseb | shows the brwoser headers | Apr 24 02:02 |
sebsebseb | twitter: I think Firefox is on the verge of going down hill now really, from everything I have seen of Firefox 4 | Apr 24 02:03 |
sebsebseb | the user agent stupidity | Apr 24 02:03 |
sebsebseb | no proper end user features that are seen as well | Apr 24 02:03 |
sebsebseb | also they are going to come out with Firefox 5, 6, and 7 this year as well, that's the plan | Apr 24 02:03 |
sebsebseb | twitter: to me looking at software, loads of the already main streame software isn't that great really, Windows, Microsoft Office, Mac OS X probably even, but not used that properly ever | Apr 24 02:04 |
sebsebseb | Adobe Photoshop? | Apr 24 02:04 |
sebsebseb | and also software that is trying to go main streame, starts to go down hill I find, well going by Ubuntu anyway, since 9.04 was in development | Apr 24 02:04 |
sebsebseb | and Ubuntu kept on going hmm and hmm and hmm and hmm and 10.04 was horrible really, but most users have no idea | Apr 24 02:05 |
sebsebseb | twitter: problem is with brwosers, there aren't really that many great alternatives to Firefox right now, not even here in Linux distro's where when it comes to real brwosers, so not IE shell's, and real browsers that are decent, we probably got quite a lot more choice than Windows | Apr 24 02:06 |
It looks like users will still be able to add distro to their UA in Firefox though the browser or through plugins | Apr 24 02:08
sebsebseb | twitter: try it yourself in Firefox 4, in about:config with | Apr 24 02:08 |
sebsebseb | twitter: well yeah in about:config and it will probably remove it on you, like I was saying | Apr 24 02:09 |
sebsebseb | been there done that, many times | Apr 24 02:09 |
Konqueror, Midori, Ephiphany, not to mention Iceweasel and other browsers are great alternatives to Firefox | Apr 24 02:09
sebsebseb | twitter: and how did I add it in, I made a new string in about:config, making a new string seemed to be the way to do it, then I called it like Seamonkey. general.useragent.vendor | Apr 24 02:10 |
sebsebseb | midori is a bit hmm, epiphany same thing | Apr 24 02:10 |
sebsebseb | Konqueror is nice yes | Apr 24 02:10 |
sebsebseb | I nearly went Opera, but | Apr 24 02:10 |
the Firefox platform portion of the string looks "standardized" how the gecko people like. it should be easy for a script to add things after the official UA | Apr 24 02:11
sebsebseb | I mean I nearly tried out Opera for my first itme properly for a while, after the Firefox 4 upgrade I did in PCLOS that I knew I would regret | Apr 24 02:11 |
sebsebseb | ,but then with Opera, it was like, how do I show book marks like Firefox? and stuffl ike that | Apr 24 02:11 |
sebsebseb | ,but featuerwise Opera and Firefox 4 by default, quite similar | Apr 24 02:11 |
chromium browser is also nice | Apr 24 02:12
sebsebseb | twitter: I think it's a good thing the distro's being mentione in user agent strings for brwosers | Apr 24 02:12 |
sebsebseb | if they watn to remove thinsg like the U in the Firefox user agent string, and the langauge stuff, well so be it | Apr 24 02:12 |
sebsebseb | ,but having the browser itself, OS, and in the case of Linux the distro showing, well that's great :) | Apr 24 02:12 |
sebsebseb | twitter: no Chromium is ah for me! | Apr 24 02:12 |
sebsebseb | first of all the interface reminds me of Internet Explorer 7 that's for Chromium and Chrome | Apr 24 02:12 |
me too and the whole issue of analysis seems strange, it should be easy to parse for distros if people actually wanted to do that | Apr 24 02:13
sebsebseb | all this like stuff on the right next to the URL bar and that kind of thing, also with Chromium/Chrome again I had issues bookmarking and what not, I am very used to Firefox | Apr 24 02:13 |
sebsebseb | twitter: you to what? agreeing that UA's should show the distro? | Apr 24 02:13 |
I'm agreeing that UAs should show whatever the user wants | Apr 24 02:14
sebsebseb | well yes, and by default they should be like befoer showing the distro I think :) | Apr 24 02:14 |
that does not really complicate the analysis | Apr 24 02:14
sebsebseb | of course Mozilla probably doesn't think like me | Apr 24 02:14 |
sebsebseb | well | Apr 24 02:14 |
it should be easy enough to parse for distro names if you want | Apr 24 02:14
sebsebseb | Firefox user agent strings are one way, to get an idea about Linux distro market share | Apr 24 02:14 |
sebsebseb | even on Windows, if I am using a browser on Windows, I would think probably or possibily about how maybe some how, I am actsaully contributing to Windows market share whilst doing so | Apr 24 02:15 |
sebsebseb | same thing if I am running a browser in Wine, I mean when it says Windows in the UA | Apr 24 02:15 |
sebsebseb | then again I woudn't go on sites that are being used for getting an idea, about how many people are on a distro I guess, but still | Apr 24 02:15 |
you should be worried about more than that if you are browsing with Windows | Apr 24 02:16
sebsebseb | if you mean the amount of security issues there can be, well sure | Apr 24 02:16 |
sebsebseb | twitter: in the case of Internet Explorer 9 removing mroe stuff from the UA I think that makes sense for Microsoft, I mean spyware toolbars can add to it for example | Apr 24 02:16 |
sebsebseb | on the other hand, well a technical user could look at the UA quickly, to see if any malware added to it | Apr 24 02:17 |
Nothing from Microsoft makes sense | Apr 24 02:17
sebsebseb | twitter: Internet Explorer 10 is Windows 7 only by the way | Apr 24 02:18 |
sebsebseb | and I guess Windows 8 could run it, when that's out | Apr 24 02:18 |
sebsebseb | twitter: anyway I mentioned the UA thing in Mageia channels a few times not that long ago, but no one who was replying seemed to care much | Apr 24 02:19 |
sebsebseb | also apparnalty on distrowatch it was number 19 not that long ago | Apr 24 02:19 |
sebsebseb | twitter: maybe distro's should haev a built in option, for being part of stats for that distro | Apr 24 02:20 |
sebsebseb | for distro's | Apr 24 02:20 |
sebsebseb | that would sort out the market share issues out quite well | Apr 24 02:20 |
sebsebseb | about how many people are using distro names goes here. and how much market share does Desktop Linux really have or about how much does it realy have when compared against Windows and Mac OS X | Apr 24 02:20 |

sebsebseb | got paid something for it | Apr 24 02:24 |

sebsebseb | twitter: anyway I used to look at the website statistics for that site every now and again :) | Apr 24 02:25 |
sebsebseb | and I lost a site I made, and well I got one site online stil that I made with someone, and well, that needs some sorting out really I think, probably needs a bit of updating really, and the stats could be sorted out | Apr 24 02:25 |
sebsebseb | ,but yeah it can be fun looking at website statistics when having a site :) | Apr 24 02:26 |
sebsebseb | espesailly if you can see Linux in there, and then see what distro's people were on, but like I was saying, Firefox and Chrome Chromeium are messing this up | Apr 24 02:26 |
Konq does not, by default show distro name. what a shame | Apr 24 02:31
sebsebseb | twitter: ah yes, but it can be added in quite easilly without a big problem :) | Apr 24 02:31 |
sebsebseb | twitter: also if you think about it for Konq not that big of a deal, most users of it are technical and probably used Linux on the desktop for quite a long time for msot of them | Apr 24 02:32 |
sebsebseb | plus it's not used by that many people anyway | Apr 24 02:32 |
sebsebseb | twitter: anyway I remember trying Konqueorr Kubuntu's Konuqeror whenever it was now, and well yep it had Kubuntu in the UA rather than Ubuntu :) | Apr 24 02:33 |

sebsebseb | some test site I guess? | Apr 24 02:33 |
sebsebseb | twitter: or we go to the site and get malware on our computers if running Windows with Internet Explorer? :D | Apr 24 02:34 |
kbuntu does that, it seems to go in circles. My point is that it should be easy for users to change in general but does not seem to be that way with Konqueror 4 serries. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kde4libs/+bug/332339 | Apr 24 02:38

*nisshh has quit (Quit: Lost terminal) | Apr 24 13:37
DaemonFC | the BKL is still there in 2.6.38 | Apr 24 13:37 |
DaemonFC | you have to disable it if you don't want it | Apr 24 13:37 |
DaemonFC | or do you mean something that got fixed to not need the BKL is broken? | Apr 24 13:37 |
oiaohm | Something that got fixed not to need BKL minorally broken. | Apr 24 13:39 |
oiaohm | Ie it works | Apr 24 13:39 |
oiaohm | But now it runs that often that is eating power. | Apr 24 13:39 |
*nisshh (~ryan@ubuntu/member/nisshh) has joined #techrights | Apr 24 13:39
oiaohm | It was most likely a power vampire before BKL removal. Just not as bad. | Apr 24 13:39 |
DaemonFC | I hate to think about what FGLRX is doing when you run it with no BKL support, like I do | Apr 24 13:39 |
DaemonFC | but it scares me either way, oh well | Apr 24 13:39 |
oiaohm | BKL had to go no matter what. | Apr 24 13:40 |
oiaohm | Masking errors is never a good thing. | Apr 24 13:40 |
DaemonFC | the big kernel lock could be abused and easily cause crashing or freezing of the system | Apr 24 13:43 |
DaemonFC | I'm not sad to see it go | Apr 24 13:43 |
DaemonFC | I'd rather live with a 5% drop in framerate of FGLRX than risk that it causes the system to lock up | Apr 24 13:44 |
oiaohm | 5% is really because FGLRX is not using Linux priorities right. DaemonFC | Apr 24 13:49 |
oiaohm | Again its BKL masking a coding error. | Apr 24 13:49 |
DaemonFC | oiaohm, Someone who works at Opera told me that 11.5 for UNIX will switch to using XCB | Apr 24 13:52 |
DaemonFC | :) | Apr 24 13:52 |
DaemonFC | I guess this means that what? Most Linux distributions older than late 2009 won't be able to use Opera? | Apr 24 13:53 |
DaemonFC | and the rest will see a memory and CPU use decrease? | Apr 24 13:54 |
oiaohm | XCB is fully threaded. | Apr 24 13:54 |
oiaohm | So CPU usage can go up with XCB not down. | Apr 24 13:55 |
DaemonFC | Also, OpenGL for Vega isn't mandatory, but more GPUs will support it than Firefox's OpenGL backend | Apr 24 13:55 |
DaemonFC | the ones that are simply too damned old or broken will get Vega with XRender | Apr 24 13:55 |
DaemonFC | there will be a setting in Opera:config that the user can override to select one or the other despite what Opera selects | Apr 24 13:56 |

DaemonFC | almost anyone with new-ish Nvidia/FGLRX/Nouveau/Radeon/Intel should be able to use it | Apr 24 13:57 |
DaemonFC | seems Firefox is the only browser blaming the drivers for their crappy OpenGL backend | Apr 24 13:58 |
DaemonFC | and everyone else's just works | Apr 24 13:58 |
DaemonFC | why is that? | Apr 24 13:58 |
DaemonFC | if you can only enable a feature for 30% or so of your users, and even then it's slow, you should ask if it's worth shipping | Apr 24 13:59 |
oiaohm | Firefox is pushing the edge of webgl. | Apr 24 13:59 |
DaemonFC | Opera already supports WebGL | Apr 24 13:59 |
DaemonFC | and WebM/WebP, Vorbis, and Theora | Apr 24 14:00 |
oiaohm | Opera is only supporting to the standard of WebGL. | Apr 24 14:00 |

DaemonFC | you obviously don't need the broken parts just to use composited layers | Apr 24 14:01 |

cubezzz | hmmm, the minimalist philsophy seems kind of dead :) | Apr 24 14:02 |
DaemonFC | I think they could probably enable 2/3 levels of OpenGL support | Apr 24 14:02 |
oiaohm | cubezzz: wayland is the new TinyX | Apr 24 14:02 |
DaemonFC | instead of just banning the driver outright | Apr 24 14:02 |
DaemonFC | when it is capable of doing most operations just fine | Apr 24 14:02 |
oiaohm | cubezzz: remember directfb is also still around. | Apr 24 14:02 |

DaemonFC | OpenGL ES is the new hotness | Apr 24 14:05 |
DaemonFC | I haven't looked into it, all I know is that most drivers that are already OpenGL capable can do ES | Apr 24 14:05 |
DaemonFC | so it's probably just an embedded-friendly subset | Apr 24 14:06 |

DaemonFC | oiaohm, One thing that I hate about OpenGL is sometimes the driver has to claim to support 3-4 extensions that really just map to 1 real one | Apr 24 14:08 |
DaemonFC | because they couldn't decide what to call it and real world applications call it by NV, ATI, INTEL, SGI, ARB, and EXT | Apr 24 14:09 |
DaemonFC | or any combination | Apr 24 14:09 |
DaemonFC | so even if your driver supports the extension, all it takes is an app asking for it by a different name to fail | Apr 24 14:10 |
DaemonFC | which is retarded | Apr 24 14:10 |
DaemonFC | :) | Apr 24 14:10 |
oiaohm | There is a offical rules behind that. | Apr 24 14:10 |
oiaohm | EXT is offically part of the spec. | Apr 24 14:10 |
DaemonFC | ARB means it's up for review I think | Apr 24 14:10 |
DaemonFC | and vendor name means that it is a vendor extension that hasn't been submitted | Apr 24 14:10 |
DaemonFC | :P | Apr 24 14:10 |
oiaohm | NV ATI INTEL SGI MESA are implementors own. | Apr 24 14:10 |
oiaohm | no requirement is that you do submit them. | Apr 24 14:11 |
oiaohm | ARB is test run before EXT | Apr 24 14:11 |
oiaohm | So if the process worked. New sections you are not sure if they work yet should either be under your own tag or ARB | Apr 24 14:12 |
oiaohm | Once you are sure you implementation is right then you should display the EXT form. | Apr 24 14:12 |
oiaohm | Problem is implementations have been done against Opengl rules. | Apr 24 14:12 |
oiaohm | Otherwise things would work well. | Apr 24 14:12 |
cubezzz | cool, I just added a coreboot search engine to firefox | Apr 24 14:13 |
cubezzz | handy | Apr 24 14:13 |
DaemonFC | the problem is a vendor can use GL_ATI_FOO and they don't get around to submitting it for a long time, so apps start asking for GL_ATI_FOO, then they finally submit it, and the ARB takes forever to decide, so now some applications call it GL_ATI_FOO, and some call it GL_ARB_FOO, in the mean time, Nvidia comes along and implements an extension that does basically the same thing, and they call theirs GL_NVIDIA_BAR, so now you | Apr 24 14:13 |
DaemonFC | 're in trouble, GL_ATI_FOO and GL_ARB_FOO are the same thing and GL_NVIDIA_BAR is the same thing only not entirely | Apr 24 14:13 |
DaemonFC | then the ARB gets aroudn to making GL_ARB_FOO official as GL_EXT_FOO | Apr 24 14:13 |
DaemonFC | and now anyone with an OpenGL stack needs GL_EXT_FOO that really also supports the nonstandard GL_NVIDIA_BAR extension | Apr 24 14:14 |
DaemonFC | and map GL_ATI_FOO GL_ARB_FOO, and GL_NVIDIA_BAR to it | Apr 24 14:14 |
DaemonFC | B-) | Apr 24 14:14 |
DaemonFC | and this is one extension you see :) | Apr 24 14:14 |
DaemonFC | thats why output of glxinfo goes on for miles with most "feature-complete" drivers | Apr 24 14:15 |
oiaohm | DaemonFC: If you are obeying opengl development rules by spec you should not use GL_ATI GL_NVIDIA.... stuff | Apr 24 14:16 |
DaemonFC | yeah | Apr 24 14:17 |
DaemonFC | but anyone who types in glxinfo can see how well their driver follows the rules | Apr 24 14:17 |
DaemonFC | because if they did, lots of programs would break | Apr 24 14:17 |
DaemonFC | it makes it real easy to forget to mask something and have, real programs break | Apr 24 14:19 |
DaemonFC | that happened recently with Gallium3d and the video game Trine | Apr 24 14:19 |
DaemonFC | if your OpenGL driver followed the official OpenGL extension naming rules, you'd be cussing out the driver vendor because half your programs don't work | Apr 24 14:20 |
