DaemonFCabout the Google Web Store blocking ChromiumMay 08 01:17
DaemonFCI wrote them a simultaneously polite and nasty letterMay 08 01:17
DaemonFCyou know, one that gets the point across without using foul language and name calling :)May 08 01:17
DaemonFCI can't remember exactly what I said but something like. I don't agree with Chrome's 6,500 word license, I don't want Adobe PDF DRM and vulnerabilities on my system, and I don't recognize the validity of the MPEG-LA's patent claims. Why is Chromium blocked, and why does it work if you make it ID as Chrome?May 08 01:19
DaemonFCOpera's EULA is much more acceptable May 08 01:20
DaemonFCthan ChromeMay 08 01:21
DaemonFCif you read both of them side by side, tell me which you'd rather use May 08 01:21
DaemonFCbut Chromium's is just various BSD-style licensesMay 08 01:21
DaemonFCyou don't have to agree to sell your privacy down the river or have a browser stuffed with defective Adobe software, or acknowledge the MPEG-LA's claimsMay 08 01:22
DaemonFCyou have to do that to use ChromeMay 08 01:22
DaemonFCit's bad enough that you have to have FlashMay 08 01:24
DaemonFCbut there's a million free PDF readers that don't spy on you or have tons of CVEsMay 08 01:24

DaemonFCat the same time, it's important that since Chrome is popular and is a good web browser, that if people are going to use it, the various Chromium builds should be recommended May 08 01:29
DaemonFCAs soon as someone fires up Chrome, that's a wrap on their privacy :)May 08 01:29

DaemonFCschestowitz, The way to stop being gouged by Red Hat (assuming you really don't need their support service), is to change your update sources to point to Scientific Linux May 08 02:31
DaemonFCnot to pay Oracle which really provides the same software and can't really support it (but claims to)May 08 02:32
sebsebsebschestowitz: Oh Rusty is in another episodeMay 08 02:32
sebsebsebalreadyMay 08 02:32
sebsebsebschestowitz: Rush with guests? uhmm when I am on, I probably only really want to be interviewed by you and T im by the wayMay 08 02:33
DaemonFCthe problem with using Oracle Linux 6 is that even though it's given away freely now, it may not be tomorrow, and Oracle puts their own EULA on top of it which is full of all sorts of unfortunate language like intellectual property and patents and suchMay 08 02:33
sebsebsebschestowitz: and then I want to talk about well me and distro's,  and why I want to contribute to Mageia properly on community side and thatMay 08 02:34
sebsebsebFor the mroe technical Mageia stuff, well that wil be the other guyMay 08 02:34
DaemonFCOracle's open source strategy has been to give with one hand and take with the other. Why trust them?May 08 02:34
sebsebsebyeah for the proper Mageia stuff, that will be the other guyMay 08 02:34
sebsebsebthis time roundMay 08 02:34
sebsebsebschestowitz: can probably get him to go on in JuneMay 08 02:35
DaemonFCsebsebseb, You'd think they could get rid of the awful bootloader May 08 02:35
sebsebsebDaemonFC: Who?May 08 02:35
DaemonFCGrub Legacy is really aging badlyMay 08 02:35
DaemonFCMageia May 08 02:35
sebsebsebuhmm Fedora still has Grub LegacyMay 08 02:35
sebsebseband MandrivaMay 08 02:35
sebsebseband PC Linux OSMay 08 02:35
DaemonFCyeah, and it's been hacked to death to do things it was never designed to doMay 08 02:35
DaemonFCand every once in a while it goes nuts and eats your data or can't find the root partitionMay 08 02:36
DaemonFCor some other such crap that I still haven't seen GRUB 2 doMay 08 02:36
sebsebsebuhmm that 0.97 version that those distro's have, has worked well rather well for meMay 08 02:36
sebsebsebschestowitz: so you only just uploaded that episode or?May 08 02:36
DaemonFCyeah, throw LVM or XFS into the equation May 08 02:36
DaemonFCand see what happensMay 08 02:36
sebsebsebschestowitz: I was looking at the Techbytes group a few times earlier, and yep no dent about itMay 08 02:36
DaemonFCit's been patched  to support both, but that support is too flaky to count onMay 08 02:37
DaemonFCI'd be surprised if Fedora keeps using GRUB Legacy for very longMay 08 02:37
sebsebsebDaemonFC: Fedora 15  will be Grub Legacy as wellMay 08 02:38
DaemonFCyes, it willMay 08 02:38
DaemonFCunfortunate May 08 02:39
sebsebsebworks good for meMay 08 02:39
sebsebsebGrub 2 is nasty to configureMay 08 02:39
sebsebsebalso who cares really about a boot loader, as long as the OS's boot?May 08 02:39
DaemonFCit's like anything else you never think of until it doesn't work :)May 08 02:39
sebsebsebschestowitz: uhmm for the domain, I think .org.uk would have been better,  or just well yeah .org, because Tech byes isn't a compnay in the uk .co.ukMay 08 02:40
sebsebsebschestowitz: I know  .co.uk gets used wrongly a lot now, but stillMay 08 02:40
DaemonFCI have a .co.uk email addressMay 08 02:40
DaemonFCSpotify requires oneMay 08 02:41

sebsebsebDaemonFC: Hmm just been thinking about what distro to  put on again, because I got this Ubuntu11.04 Beta 2 install where  I installed Gnome 3 wrong from ppa, that is on the verge of going bye byeMay 08 05:04
sebsebsebwell anywayMay 08 05:04
sebsebsebFedora 15 release candidate on the 10th according to the scheduled :)May 08 05:04
DaemonFCGNOME 3 PPA may ruin your Ubuntu system, it's not supportedMay 08 05:04
sebsebsebI installed it wrong or whateverMay 08 05:04
sebsebsebFedora 15 well yeah that could be great, but I remember from 13 and 14 that Virtualbox isn't in the repos and uhMay 08 05:05
DaemonFCIt does ruin your Unity SessionMay 08 05:05
DaemonFCand there is no way to remove itMay 08 05:05
sebsebsebDaemonFC: still  haven't tried out  Gnome 3 final, and the Ubuntu ppa isn't the full expereince anywayMay 08 05:05
sebsebsebyep can't just log into Unity I know,  once the Gnome 3 ppa is used, and can probably remove the ppa with a commandMay 08 05:06
DaemonFCppa-purge might workMay 08 05:06
sebsebsebanyway I may even go back to Gnome 2, but also KDE as a desktop envrinoment at times, when Mageia 1 comes out next month,  this is after trying out Gnome 3 finalMay 08 05:06
sebsebsebso yeah the plan is to try out Gnome 3 final this month, but I also want to use my computer, and have Windows in a virtual machine, because of a stupid thing that needs it,  and hopefuly it will work there, but yep not virtual machined yet eitherMay 08 05:07
sebsebsebso basically I am thinking about maybe re installing later with the Ubuntu 11.04 final,  and have another go with Unity quickly, and ccsm this time, and try the Gnome 3 ppa again, but installing how I should this timeMay 08 05:07
sebsebsebor putting the release candidate for Fedora 15 on next weekend or something uh.May 08 05:08
sebsebsebDaemonFC: I kind of hate Desktop Linux right nowMay 08 05:08
sebsebsebat times, because of how things are, with Gnome 3 and UnityMay 08 05:08
sebsebseband distro'sMay 08 05:08
sebsebsebDaemonFC: Debian uh, I can ignore Debian pretty much,  I don't care about trying that out on pshyicall hardware,  KDE uhmm I can ignore that as a desktop envrionment unless I choose to use it no problem, but well it's differnet for Gnome 3 with Gnome Shell and UnityMay 08 05:09
sebsebsebsomething tells me, that I won't be that keen on the Gnome Shell final either from what I have seen, so yeah Mageia 1 next month for quite a while it may beMay 08 05:10
sebsebsebor at least untill there's an interesting development version of something to try out,  be that Ubuntu, Mageia, or  possibily even FedoraMay 08 05:10
sebsebsebDaemonFC: at leat I am not looking at trying out loads of distro's :) soon on this computer, because I don't have a proper test computer, because yeah if I was looking at trying loads fo them soon, I would be mentally in a right mess reallyMay 08 05:11
DaemonFCapparently Unity causes Compiz to leak memoryMay 08 05:13
DaemonFCafter 5-6 hours of being logged in, Compiz is using over 300 megs of RAMMay 08 05:13
sebsebsebDaemonFC: from what I have seen of it in Beta 2, and no I didn't change any compiz settings, but I did try out Unity 3D and Unity 2D (from a ppa turns out it was in the repos),  but well I prefer the 10.10 mutter version reallyMay 08 05:14
sebsebsebwhen running that on my desktop with Ubuntu and LubuntuMay 08 05:14
sebsebsebDaemonFC: also if I am running something else, I can virtual machine Unity 3D and 2D anyway in UbuntuMay 08 05:15
sebsebsebcould do that inside Ubuntu evenMay 08 05:15
sebsebsebwhich wel I might even doMay 08 05:15
DaemonFCGNOME says that having preferences is bad May 08 05:16
DaemonFCthey carry that out to where you HAVE to have Mutter runningMay 08 05:16
DaemonFCit HAS to use compositing May 08 05:16
sebsebsebDaemonFC: I might actgsauly keep what I got right now for longer, and virtual machine 11.04 finalMay 08 05:16
DaemonFCand you MUST use the settings it came withMay 08 05:16
DaemonFCI think that's bullshitMay 08 05:16
DaemonFC:)May 08 05:16
sebsebsebI mean I kind of like this cross between Gnome 2 and Gnome 3May 08 05:16
DaemonFCIn many ways, GNOME 3 is worse than UnityMay 08 05:16
sebsebseb, but on the other hand, I got some other bugs of course, since this was beta 2May 08 05:16
DaemonFCAt least Unity doesn't totally ostracize power users the way GNOME does, even if it does have more bugsMay 08 05:17
sebsebsebDaemonFC: when just well looking at the interfaces and what they offer,  and it depends on user and all that sure, but well in some ways Unity will be better, and other ways Gnome SHellMay 08 05:17
sebsebsebin a way it's easier to just use Gnome 2 mainly for now, and not really worry much about this stuffMay 08 05:18
DaemonFCI don't really like GNOMES Hell May 08 05:18
DaemonFCB-)May 08 05:18
sebsebsebDaemonFC: also knowing about this  kind of stuff, what's going on, with Desktop Linux and such, well it can be more of a curse than a blessing at timesMay 08 05:18
sebsebsebI have this feeling from what I saw of the latest versions of Gnome ShellMay 08 05:18
sebsebsebon sites and video and yeahMay 08 05:18
sebsebsebI have this feeling, that I will prefer the old version I have on the other computer in Mandriva 2010.2 which is a year or so old, well there was a little updateMay 08 05:19
sebsebseb,but yeah old stillMay 08 05:19
sebsebsebold version that goes on top of Gnome 2May 08 05:19
sebsebsebDaemonFC: this is also why I know that I probably woudn't mind running Magiea 1 on here in June really, after trying out Gnome Shell latest version and Unity again for a bit.May 08 05:19
sebsebsebyeah no Gnome 3 or Unity for Mageia 1May 08 05:19
sebsebsebthe next proper verison of Gnome, so 3.2, should be in Mageia 2 though and well most distro's that have GnomeMay 08 05:20
DaemonFCEpiphany is a pile of crap. There's no preference to make popups open in a new tab (because preferences are evil), there are no really good extensions (because you have to write them in C, like you do for Internet Explorer), and the extensions they do have suck (Like their Adblock plugin that uses 2007-era filterset.g that nobody makes filters for anymore)May 08 05:20
sebsebsebwell I am not that keen on Epiphany myselfMay 08 05:20
sebsebsebaltough Firefox is also going bad now as well starting with 4.0,  a bit here and thereMay 08 05:20
DaemonFCWriting extensions for a web browser in C is something that only web browsers from the 1990s doMay 08 05:21
DaemonFClike IE 9May 08 05:21
DaemonFCB-)May 08 05:21

sebsebsebDaemonFC: in a way ignorance is bliss when it  comes to computers a lot of the time.  I mean most computer users won't really think about what OS they are going to run and when for a start.  Also most computer users, won't read loads of well Linux related junk on the web, wasting time doing that.May 08 05:27
sebsebseband that's something else,  the web actsaully annoys me now more than it used to do,  because I read mroe stuff now than I used to, and well there is so much of it every day, to do with Linux and stuff,  and well yeah can't read it all,  and most of it isn't particulary interesting anyway, but I still want to go and read a lot of this stuff, hmm.May 08 05:28
