kentmaGood day.Jun 22 08:20
schestowitzHi thereJun 22 08:23
schestowitzHow are you?Jun 22 08:23
schestowitzThere are 3-4 IRC channels one, this one we hardly use because Novell got soldJun 22 08:24
schestowitzAs I said, Jun 22 08:25
schestowitzHomer and NessunoJun 22 08:25
schestowitzare still around.Jun 22 08:25
schestowitzHomer is in the other channel sometimesJun 22 08:25
schestowitzAnd HPT is in identica, tooJun 22 08:25
kentmaHomer is still on some strange world and refuses to speak to me - still not sure why!  Nessuno is still in contact from time to time.  How about I try #techrights?Jun 22 08:25
schestowitzBut I thought maybe some of us could take back COLA :-)Jun 22 08:25
kentmainteresting thought, yesJun 22 08:25
schestowitzsure, that's the main channel we use nowJun 22 08:26
kentmaIt's been a while :-)Jun 22 08:26
schestowitzAndroid is winningJun 22 08:26
schestowitzThe trolls recognise thisJun 22 08:26
schestowitzAnd so, their FUD has expiredJun 22 08:26
kentmayes, the mobility thing was pretty much unavoidable.Jun 22 08:26
schestowitzSame in blog posts around the Web. The "Linux dead" allegation doesn't fly anymoreJun 22 08:26
schestowitzkentma: you guessed it right --Jun 22 08:26
schestowitzthat devices like tablets would grow at the expense of desktopJun 22 08:26
kentmaWell, it's my job to do that :-DJun 22 08:26
schestowitzThey outsell them nowJun 22 08:27
schestowitzBTW, my BT connection has been stable for over a monthJun 22 08:27
kentmayes, the trends were clear for a long time, but people become emotionally attached to things (like desktops).Jun 22 08:27
kentmaGood!Jun 22 08:27
schestowitzAt first it was a bit dodgyJun 22 08:27
schestowitzNot sure if there's some Nokia plans in the pipelineJun 22 08:27

kentmaNokia have announced the N9 todayJun 22 08:27
kentmayes :-)Jun 22 08:28
schestowitzyesJun 22 08:28
schestowitzit's down to patents nowJun 22 08:28
kentmaI was considering buying one, more as a curiousity than anything else.Jun 22 08:28
schestowitztechrights I use mainly to wage war on software patentsJun 22 08:28
kentmaThe key now is to put an end to software patents.Jun 22 08:28
schestowitzElop uses them to extort Microsoft competitorsJun 22 08:28
kentmathe linux debate is rather, well, dated.Jun 22 08:28
schestowitznow elop will need to make n9 failJun 22 08:28
schestowitzTo 'prove' that there was no point to LinuxJun 22 08:29
kentmaI'm sure he'll succeed at that - announcing the end replacement at launch is hardly professional - it's a Ratner.Jun 22 08:29
schestowitzBTW, I haven't posted in COLA in almost a yearJun 22 08:29
schestowitzBut the trolls still stalk us and mention our site dailyJun 22 08:29
kentmanor me... is there a password for techrights, btw?Jun 22 08:29
schestowitzUsually several times per day, rather odd...Jun 22 08:29
kentmaah, no there isn't.  I'm in.Jun 22 08:29
kentmaThat's amazing - you obviously had a powerful impact.Jun 22 08:30
schestowitzI thought about getting back in thereJun 22 08:30
schestowitzIf only to just keep presence of Linux advocacyJun 22 08:30
schestowitzand msb_ asked for thatJun 22 08:30
kentmaperhaps it would be worth a trip in, although there's no way I could afford the time which I used to put in.Jun 22 08:30
schestowitzI've mostly lurked a bitJun 22 08:31
schestowitzCause they often spread lies about me thereJun 22 08:31
schestowitzNot safe not to keep up of their liesJun 22 08:31
schestowitzGary the psychopath is lurking in IRCJun 22 08:32
schestowitzHe's a very, very sick personJun 22 08:32
kentmaMy current job (software for Openreach) is far too time-consuming, plus I have several out of hours interests too, so it's about fitting things in.Jun 22 08:32
kentmaPerhaps setting a target of some kind?Jun 22 08:32
schestowitzshould be locked up really, not safe to be out thereJun 22 08:32
schestowitzIIRC you cycleJun 22 08:32
schestowitzThe trolls are mostly harmless nowJun 22 08:32
schestowitzWhen they try to damage they only promoteJun 22 08:33
schestowitzSo the COLA trolls are powerless and they harm their cause more than they promote itJun 22 08:33
kentmaI would think that they know that they lost the battle, Microsoft are moving away from this to other things, so their funding will have dried up.Jun 22 08:33
kentmaGary is wierd, though - he's surely a sociopath at least.Jun 22 08:33
kentmaWhat name does he use?Jun 22 08:33
schestowitzHowever, it would be nice to have Linux advocacy topics in COLAJun 22 08:33
schestowitzkentma: he doesn't sayJun 22 08:33
schestowitzbut we know which oneJun 22 08:34
kentmaokay :-)Jun 22 08:34
schestowitzmicrosoft has debt nowJun 22 08:34
kentmaMaybe the occasional essay?Jun 22 08:34
schestowitzand it tries to amass patentsJun 22 08:34
schestowitzto ruins the competitorsJun 22 08:34
schestowitzas I expected 5 years agoJun 22 08:34
kentmaMicrosoft made a huge error in purchasing skypeJun 22 08:34
schestowitzgroklaw is sort of out of commissionJun 22 08:34
kentmashame - she was doing a good jobJun 22 08:34
schestowitzgivs me a reason now to use skypeJun 22 08:35
schestowitzWhich isn't too bad... I needed that push to leave all blobsJun 22 08:35
schestowitzkentma: yes, but she's just facing the patent issue nowJun 22 08:35
schestowitzshe passed over to WebbinkJun 22 08:35
schestowitzHe's from the peer 2 patent bunchJun 22 08:35
schestowitzWho are not pro-abolitionJun 22 08:35
kentmaoh?  interesting.Jun 22 08:36
schestowitzThey're more like OINJun 22 08:36
schestowitzPatents vs patentsJun 22 08:36
kentmaThe problem with that approach is that it merely serves to raise the entry barrier for new businesses through the patenting of mathematics.Jun 22 08:36
kentmaThe whole model needs tearing down, but I suspect that western governments are too wedded to it, as they're too frightened of the growth of India and China and cannot see how else they can compete.Jun 22 08:37
schestowitzYes, exactlyJun 22 08:37
schestowitzBT has been patenting in IndiaJun 22 08:37
schestowitzI recall this from 2008Jun 22 08:37
schestowitzMaybe software patents too, that may have been the case at the time..Jun 22 08:38
kentmaBT has a big presence in India, so I wouldn't be surprised.Jun 22 08:38
schestowitzProblem is, China realised this and made its own patents tooJun 22 08:38
kentmaIt's great for the legal beagles.Jun 22 08:38
schestowitzThey'll make the West pay back the debtJun 22 08:39
schestowitzThe patents won't cancel it outJun 22 08:39
schestowitzOr the nukes, eitherJun 22 08:39
schestowitzUnless the neo-con fundamentalist install people like Palin to go all crazy "patriot"Jun 22 08:39

msb_Roy, just start posting relevant news again, exactly like before.Jun 22 08:43
schestowitzThey hated when people lost sight of their hecklingJun 22 08:43
schestowitzEven if it doesn't get big threads going, at least it makes COLA is useful source of information/newsJun 22 08:43
msb_They start most of the threads now, and I think do about 70% of the posts.Jun 22 08:43
kentmaschestowitz:  sure, but as you said earlier, the war is won, we're seeing some battles play out, and they will for a long time, but the war is absolutely won.Jun 22 08:43
schestowitzI can group items and make suitable titles for these groupsJun 22 08:43
schestowitzkentma: it isJun 22 08:44
kentmaOh, sort of a newsline thing?Jun 22 08:44
schestowitzGroklaw's PJ stepped aside saying soJun 22 08:44
schestowitzShe's not so needed anywayJun 22 08:44
schestowitzShe said the "Emergency is over" or something along those linesJun 22 08:44
kentmaThe danger now is not that LinuJun 22 08:44
kentmax might fail, rather, it's that Android might take away the freedom the GPL was supposed to enshrine.Jun 22 08:45
kentmaIf that makes sense.Jun 22 08:45
schestowitzAnd Microsoft is too feeble now, too, challenged by the likes of IBM (whose market cap is back ahead of Microsoft) with Google and Apple well aheadJun 22 08:45
schestowitzkentma: it does that alreadyJun 22 08:45
schestowitzAnd Microsoft is killing meegoJun 22 08:45
schestowitzwebos will spread through hp, but it's proprietary tooJun 22 08:45
schestowitzthe FSF is in bad shapeJun 22 08:45
schestowitzThey called back an old member to replace the departing Peter BrownJun 22 08:46
kentmaMicrosoft are in a death-spiral, going back several years.  They've not created anything interested since Microsoft Office.  They're ported windows to Xbox and to mobiles, but that's it.  Windows is ancient technology, and the continued round of hacks and security problems merely proves that Windows is a 1980s technology, ill suited to the security challenges of the 20-teens.Jun 22 08:46
schestowitzYes, OS X is running circles around it and Linux too is forging aheadJun 22 08:47
schestowitzBut in the form of closed systemsJun 22 08:47
schestowitzNot so much the Free DesktopJun 22 08:47
kentmaThat's what I was wondering about - is cola the right battle to fight now?  Would it be better to support the FSF works, say, or the EFF?Jun 22 08:47
schestowitzGNOME and KDE have weakened in their organisation structureJun 22 08:47
schestowitzkentma: right..Jun 22 08:48
schestowitzWell, we have things like techrightsJun 22 08:48
schestowitzMostly about issues like patentsJun 22 08:48
schestowitzANd that's one of the reasons I didn't spend time in COLAJun 22 08:48
schestowitzI also assume USENET will rot over the next 5 yearsJun 22 08:48
kentmaOr, alternatively, should we be looking at Ubuntu and Debian as the last men-standing?Jun 22 08:48
schestowitzEFF does patent-bustingJun 22 08:48
kentmausenet dates back to my early days in this world, before the web :-)Jun 22 08:49
schestowitzNot the same as actuallym changing legislation, more like peer to patentJun 22 08:49
kentmaIt's like gopher, there are still a couple running, but they're curiousities now.Jun 22 08:49
schestowitzGoogle Groups too is changingJun 22 08:49
schestowitzGoogle has phased out some stuff like profilesJun 22 08:49
schestowitzStarting July 1stJun 22 08:49
kentmaHmmmmmm, not good.Jun 22 08:49
schestowitzNot too sure what they'll do with DejaNewsJun 22 08:49
msb_The Microsoft propagandists in COLA are constantly claiming that "Linux has failed" because it only has (they say) 1% of desktops.  But I say that Linux is the OS for people who think, and with at least 20,000,000 desktops it is succeeding nicely.  However, to be healthy it needs SaX (which is still being maintained as SaX3) and KDE3 (which is being maintained and improved as Trinity).  Jun 22 08:50
kentmaThe archive search has been broeken for years now.Jun 22 08:50
schestowitzI think they've had a problem with people spreading libel through there, without source if liabilityJun 22 08:50
schestowitzkentma: hmmm... is it still?Jun 22 08:50
schestowitzAlso, back in the days around 2006 Google had "Groups" in the front pageJun 22 08:50
schestowitzImage, News, Groups, etc.Jun 22 08:50
schestowitzThey now suppress access to it, or rather, they hide it somewhere away from reachJun 22 08:51
schestowitzIn Firefox 5 the Google Toolbar got all suckyJun 22 08:51
msb_The Trinity leader agrees with me that ALSA is the best sound system overall, and the sound system should not be tied to the DE, as it is in KDE4.Jun 22 08:51
schestowitzI dumped it last nightJun 22 08:51
kentmamsb:  the desktop has been pretty much irrelevant for several years now,  it's all about mobility, which is portable devices, phones, pads, web tablets and so on.  Most average people don't buy desktops at all, and business people are increasing moving to tablets/pads.Jun 22 08:51
schestowitzYes, Panasonic and another company announces Android tablets yesterday(ish)Jun 22 08:52
kentmaschestowitz:  you're right, groups was on the front.Jun 22 08:52
schestowitzCisco too will have thoseJun 22 08:52
schestowitzNone runs WIndowsJun 22 08:52
schestowitzIt's just iPad (1,2) versus all the LinuxesJun 22 08:52
schestowitzSame in phonesJun 22 08:52
schestowitz+RIM, Nokia legacyJun 22 08:52
msb_kentma: Irrelevant in terms of numbers perhaps.  But desktops and laptops are what are used by the intellectual core of Linux people, and by anyone else who needs a powerful, modular OS that will do what they want it to.Jun 22 08:53
schestowitzkentma: it was... odd as it may seem to think that nowJun 22 08:53
schestowitzSo, I lean towards thinking we could leave usenet aside thenJun 22 08:53
schestowitzI don't get trolled by mono bullies anymoreJun 22 08:53
kentmaThe trolls are probably right, Linux never did win the desktop war, but it didn't need to - why fight for an empty goldmine?Jun 22 08:53
schestowitzmono sort of diedJun 22 08:53
msb_Usenet is widely used for file sharing.Jun 22 08:53
schestowitzI don't need to roost where even more vicious trolls roamJun 22 08:54

kentmamsb_: but, in the wider picture, the desktop is, perhaps sadly, deadJun 22 08:54
schestowitzmy monitor that I bought last wek came with speakers and USBJun 22 08:55
msb_Only in percentage.Jun 22 08:55
schestowitzSome compliance thingJun 22 08:55
schestowitzI guess if they make them like this (and I saw an HP computer at the shop where the mobo is in the screen), we'll see major changes indeedJun 22 08:55
schestowitzhose 'screenputers' are bad investmentJun 22 08:55
schestowitzBecause they don't run on batteriesJun 22 08:55
schestowitzSo I guess lean OSes (i.e. nto Windows) will be the way forwardJun 22 08:56
msb_You can't do serious work on a cell phone, web-tablet, or whatever.Jun 22 08:56
schestowitzVista 8 with al that ARM hype won't ruj 3rd-party appsJun 22 08:56
msb_You need a good keyboard and a fairly large screen.Jun 22 08:56
schestowitzand it'll still be too thickJun 22 08:56
schestowitzmsb_: you can have thoseJun 22 08:56
schestowitzmsb_: maybe not there yetJun 22 08:56
schestowitzBut my PDA has a full-sized keyboard, stillJun 22 08:57
schestowitzIf it has a US output to connect to the screen, then I could probably get lots doneJun 22 08:57
schestowitzEthernet tooJun 22 08:57
msb_If it has a full-size kbd and a full-size screen it's a laptop!  8^)Jun 22 08:57
schestowitzWhat's a laptop?Jun 22 08:58
schestowitzIS this a new thing?Jun 22 08:58
msb_It doesn't matter if it's an integrated machine with fullsize screen and kbd or cabled together -- it's what's needed for serious complex work.Jun 22 08:58
msb_schestowitz: A portable computer (if you're not kidding).Jun 22 08:59
schestowitzI was kiddingJun 22 08:59
msb_And Linux with many virtual-desktops and good switching between them is often needed too.Jun 22 08:59
schestowitzSo anyway, I guess COLA can be forgotten about?Jun 22 09:00
msb_That's KDE3/Trinity.Jun 22 09:00
schestowitzAlthough getting back there should not be too hardJun 22 09:00
msb_If you're going to post news elsewhere couldn't you make your software shoot it to COLA too, without any extra effort on your part?Jun 22 09:00
msb_You certainly don't have to respond to the Microsofties.Jun 22 09:01
msb_btw, did you find the links I posted about Firefox plugins?  I think you might have just gone off to sleep.Jun 22 09:02
msb_Maybe Ubuntu will be able to out-bling and out-stupid MS-windows, or at least match it, and attract some computer-non-literates.Jun 22 09:04
msb_I just want one well-maintained distro with Trinity, SaX, and ALSA that I can recommend to people who think.Jun 22 09:06
msb_If it also has KDE4 and pulse/phonon/whatever, I don't care.Jun 22 09:06
msb_People who think, and use the computer for complex work, and therefore love Linux, are the people who will spread the word on it most effectively by far, to others like themselves.Jun 22 09:07
