sebsebsebschestowitz: seems undeededOct 29 00:16
sebsebsebschestowitz: seems a bit of a silly idea in a wayOct 29 00:16
sebsebseband it's mainly Debian,  and upsterams, that make Ubuntu what it isOct 29 00:16
Guest81276Debian had a community appreciation day.  It was nice, for the most part.Oct 29 00:18
Guest81276I got to mail my favorite package maintainers and thank them.Oct 29 00:18
sebsebsebGuest81276: right, but Ubuntu is the most hyped up distro, and so they don't really ned a day like this, where loads of their fans go thank youOct 29 00:20
sebsebsebGuest81276: plus without Debian and the actsul upstreams, Ubuntu woudn't be what it isOct 29 00:20
sebsebseband Marks' money of courseOct 29 00:20
sebsebsebGuest81276: a day where people go to the various upstreams such as Gnome or KDE, and go thank you, that would be great :DOct 29 00:21
sebsebsebwithout the upstreams, Linux distros don't exist  basicalelyOct 29 00:21
Guest81276If it's all public, upstream can read it.  The more thanks and good feelings people have, the better off we all are.Oct 29 00:22
sebsebsebGuest81276: no it's a day where  they go to Ubuntu stuff and do a thank you for their being UbuntuOct 29 00:23
sebsebseb, but that's aimed at Ubuntu people, not upstreamsOct 29 00:23
Guest81276We shall see what people praise. It's all good.Oct 29 00:30

XFaCEsebsebseb: In other words, a perfectly competitive "economy"Oct 29 00:50
sebsebsebXFaCE: :)Oct 29 00:50
XFaCEsebsebseb: Well Arch has surprising popularityOct 29 00:50
XFaCEsebsebseb: I would estimate partially because of an anti-Ubuntu backlashOct 29 00:51
sebsebsebXFaCE: yep Arch Linux has taken quite a lot of the more expereinced Ubuntu users as well :D, and quite a few of the Ubuntu Community Members aren't happy about this heh heh :)Oct 29 00:51
sebsebsebWhy are some of the Arch people anti Ubuntu?  Since Ubuntu is for newbies really?Oct 29 00:52
XFaCEsebsebseb: Partially the newbie aspect, but I also think because Arch allows for greater control in "crafting" the installation.  Ubuntu has become bloated (Xubuntu has also to an extent) and Arch offers arguably the best DE experience (XFCE is a notable combo) because it doesn't install extraneous dependencies by defaultOct 29 00:53
XFaCEThat'Oct 29 00:53
XFaCEs what I have read about in the XFCE forumsOct 29 00:53

The Microsoft press completely hid GNU and later GNU/Linux from me between the 1983 and 1996, though I would have loved to have had a compiler and later an alternative to DOS and Windows. schestowitzAnswer given by Mr Almunia on behalf of the CommissionOct 29 12:44
schestowitzMicrosoft's behaviour could infringe EU competition rules if Microsoft were to implement anticompetitive agreements that foreclose competition or abuse a dominant position on the relevant market(s).Oct 29 12:44
schestowitzIt should be noted that Microsoft is not present on the PC hardware market. It is primarily the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) who act as intermediaries on behalf of end users, and provide them with an ‘out-of-the-box’ product, by combining PC hardware, a client PC operating system and applications for which there is demand.Oct 29 12:44
schestowitzThe Commission is aware of the difficulties encountered by consumers who want to purchase a PC with a non-Microsoft operating system or without any operating system at all. At the moment, the Commission is, however, not in possession of evidence suggesting that this is the result of practices in violation of EU competition rules as laid down in Articles 101 and 102 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union.Oct 29 12:44

schestowitz"This infographic is misleading and incomplete. Facebook hands their information to Microsoft through data sharing agreements and Microsoft's reach is still much greater than Google's. To complete the comparison, you have to include all the companies sharing information and the information available to them. Matt Cutts of Google showed that Microsoft helped themselves to the search items for ordinary Windows users and the Windows EULA Oct 29 23:29
schestowitzgives Microsoft the legal right to search, index and even delete your files at will. Newer versions of Windows do just that and establish encrypted communications back to Microsoft. All non free software can be abused this way, so anyone who uses non free software for Google, Facebook and other things should assume that Microsoft has it. This makes Google's access a small subset of Microsoft's, though we can have our doubts about Oct 29 23:29
schestowitzMicrosoft's technical ability to process things. The final thing that's missing from the graph is a comparison of moral outrages committed by the companies. Google's record is clean so far but Microsoft has proved itself malicious on a number of occasions."Oct 29 23:29
