prurigrohey-- noticed your convo and figured I'd cut in :) why would we want the windows source?Nov 23 19:42
MinceRthere might not be enough money in the world to make m$ do thatNov 23 19:42
MinceRalso, they'd be loath to give up power for a one-time payment, imoNov 23 19:43
gde33prurigro: gofundme.com is a website where you can arrange a fund raser, my idea was to make a similar web project designed to buy out propriatary technology, a place where businesses can slap insane prices on their ideasNov 23 19:43
prurigroyup- right now they have a long term solutionNov 23 19:43
gde33MinceR: yes, that would be a problem ;)Nov 23 19:43
prurigrogde33: yea, but what's the goal of getting the windows source?Nov 23 19:43
gde33it was an exampleNov 23 19:44
prurigrobeyond a more compatible wineNov 23 19:44
MinceRto make wine good enough to get rid of winblows, i suppose :>Nov 23 19:44
gde33you mistakenly took the example for the topic :PNov 23 19:44
gde33this is why examples are bad Nov 23 19:44
MinceRexamples are good. at least good examples. :>Nov 23 19:44
prurigroone of the reasons wine isn't perfect is because windows is always moving forwardNov 23 19:44
gde33but to get back to my idea, there are a lot of people who believe in the spirit of open source.Nov 23 19:45
prurigrogde33: touche-- so you're thinking of getting things open sourced in general?Nov 23 19:45
gde33not all of them can codeNov 23 19:45
MinceRwell, it's certainly moving in some directionNov 23 19:45
gde33they do all have moneyNov 23 19:45
gde33prurigro: yeahNov 23 19:45
prurigroflash is the only big thing that comes to mindNov 23 19:46
prurigromaybe the exchange backendNov 23 19:46
gde33we should have created some project like this long ago and bought GIF and JPGNov 23 19:46
prurigrohmm, aren't there open source implementations of gif and jpg?Nov 23 19:46
gde33I believe some rights are still reserved.Nov 23 19:46
gde33You cant use GIF without a licence lolNov 23 19:46
prurigrohmm, how is it that it can be included in 'free software'?Nov 23 19:47
cubezzzre: gif, all patents have expired Nov 23 19:47
gde33yeah they must have by nowNov 23 19:47
gde33but it wasn't always like thatNov 23 19:47
gde33it was a kind of accepted crime lolNov 23 19:47
MinceRthe web made it necessaryNov 23 19:48
MinceRbefore the patent abuser appearedNov 23 19:48
MinceRafaikNov 23 19:48
cubezzzUS LZW patent expired June 2003Nov 23 19:48
prurigrooh hm, that explains why gif support wasn't nearly as good in linux before thatNov 23 19:49
gde33but businesses create propriatary shit all the time, it is more annoying in one situation than the other. If they would only have the opportunity to do Theoretical open sourcinng :DNov 23 19:49
prurigromaybe h.264 would be a good one tooNov 23 19:50
gde33yeahNov 23 19:50
gde33how much money do they really want? That is the question.Nov 23 19:50
MinceRit's held by a huge cartel thoughNov 23 19:50
MinceRthey'd demand the sun and the moonNov 23 19:50
gde33Google might just pay whatever it costsNov 23 19:50
Diablo-D3the easier way is to make 9000 open source codecsNov 23 19:50
Diablo-D3and make it harder for them to sueNov 23 19:50
prurigroyea, as soon as a business knows they have something people wantNov 23 19:51
MinceRi'm not sure if google needs toNov 23 19:51
prurigroyea, I guess the only reason anything closed source seems appealing at the moment is because its currently accepted as some form of standardNov 23 19:51
prurigroh.264 > webm, for exampleNov 23 19:51
gde33we are just not paying them not to do it? :DNov 23 19:52
gde33business people are really easy peopleNov 23 19:52
Diablo-D3prurigro: thats not trueNov 23 19:52
gde33they have no ideals or anything, you just pay them and they do whatever you ask :PNov 23 19:52
Diablo-D3first of all, there is no such codec named h264Nov 23 19:52
Diablo-D3h264, instead, is a collection of techniques used to build codecsNov 23 19:53
Diablo-D3high profile h264 looks nothing like main profile h264Nov 23 19:53
prurigroDiablo-D3: h.264 is a container then?Nov 23 19:53
Diablo-D3there are accelerators that can do one but not the other on both sidesNov 23 19:53
Diablo-D3prurigro: no, its exactly what I saidNov 23 19:53
gde33Intell might have some arcane chip technology they want to sell to us for a lot of money.Nov 23 19:53
Diablo-D3the profiles are closer to the traditional sense of codec than h264 as a whole isNov 23 19:53
prurigroDiablo-D3: so its almost as if its multiple profiles are multiple codecs unto themselves?Nov 23 19:54
Diablo-D3prurigro: yesNov 23 19:54
Diablo-D3webm aka vp8 vs high profile, yes, high profile wins... but also takes more processing power to decodeNov 23 19:54
Diablo-D3vp8 vs main profile however is a very even matchNov 23 19:55
prurigroDiablo-D3: are they all supported by the web browsers h.264 is a standard for? and are they all looking at that issue where they become pay to use in a few years?Nov 23 19:55
Diablo-D3prurigro: yes/noNov 23 19:55
Diablo-D3browsers that software decode, both are supportedNov 23 19:55
Diablo-D3radeon and nvidia can only do high profile onlyNov 23 19:55
Diablo-D3most decoders in embedded devices do main onlyNov 23 19:55
Diablo-D3bluray players often do high onlyNov 23 19:56
prurigrohmm, that creates a whole other set of problems thenNov 23 19:56
gde33Eventually all this compression stuff will just go away, we will go back to RAW formatsNov 23 19:56
Diablo-D3cable/sat boxes that support h264 at all (most dont and do mpeg2 and 4 only) do main onlyNov 23 19:56
gde33few hundred yearsNov 23 19:56
Diablo-D3prurigro: and to further the comparison, xvid (the best mpeg4 encoder) vs baseline vs the original pre-theora vp3, all compete Nov 23 19:57
Diablo-D3theora is somewhere between mpeg4 and h264 main profileNov 23 19:57
gde33I suggested in #theora to make a codec with wireframes for all famous actors. You see, they keep using the same actors in all movies and we can exploit this. Nov 23 19:58
gde33Could make HD chuck norris 10 MBNov 23 19:58
gde33but then they told me theora already does this :PNov 23 19:58
Diablo-D3theora does it for chuck norris onlyNov 23 19:58
gde33so now I think everything that can be invented has been invented already Nov 23 19:59
Diablo-D3thats why I can fit all of texas ranger on a 4mb flash stickNov 23 19:59
gde33yeah, awesome.Nov 23 19:59
gde33only chuck norris can do thatNov 23 19:59
prurigrogde33: it doesn't make sense to avoid compression-- no matter how fast we get, and how much space we have, if you can use a lossless compression vs raw, you're going to be able to do more of itNov 23 19:59
Diablo-D3lossless compression doesnt imply small howeverNov 23 19:59
Diablo-D3eventually we'll have working fractal compressionNov 23 20:00
cubezzzwell no one uses stacker on their hard drives anymore :)Nov 23 20:00
gde33Diablo-D3: some one got a patent for that just before he died mysteriouslyNov 23 20:00
gde33quite the conspiracy that oneNov 23 20:00
gde33of course physicists say something like it violates einsteins theory of relativity -- with a face like that really means something.Nov 23 20:01
Diablo-D3cubezzz: for the record, no one didNov 23 20:02
Diablo-D3it had a habit of eating your datas, om nom nomNov 23 20:02
cubezzzand it make everything slower tooNov 23 20:02
cubezzzoh some people used it, I definitely saw it usedNov 23 20:03
cubezzzwhen hard drives were 80 megsNov 23 20:04
prurigroyo 80 meg harddrives are surprisingly recentNov 23 20:04
gde33raw streams without compression is more stable Nov 23 20:05
cubezzzI got a couple of old quantumsNov 23 20:05
cubezzzone of them is 52 megNov 23 20:05
cubezzz1990 eraNov 23 20:05
cubezzzSCSI, 50-pin, still worksNov 23 20:06
cubezzzno stacker :)Nov 23 20:06
prurigrogde33: remember that part of the difficulty with compression is that it requires decoding, while RAW's issue beyond size is accessing that much data all at onceNov 23 20:06
gde33the hardware will first have to get good enoughNov 23 20:08
cubezzznah, doesn't make sense to never use compressionNov 23 20:08
cubezzzsometimes you don't need it, it's trueNov 23 20:08
cubezzzbut for video?Nov 23 20:08
prurigrogde33: we can already build hardware that can do it, it just requires quite a few more transistors to access a solid state drive's data all at once than say, RAMNov 23 20:08
gde33doesn't the Tee Vee work like that?Nov 23 20:08
gde33it helps if you don't have to process the dataNov 23 20:09
prurigrocubezzz: that's a pretty classy harddrive for circa 1990Nov 23 20:09
cubezzzprurigro, my associates in #classiccmp have me bet thoughNov 23 20:10
cubezzzthey have NOS 20 meg MFM drives :)Nov 23 20:10
prurigrogde33: pre digital tv used an analog signal, which is completely different, but I'm not sure how digital TV sends its signal, to be honestNov 23 20:10
gde33digitally !Nov 23 20:10
gde33:DNov 23 20:10
prurigrocubezzz: NOS MFM?Nov 23 20:10
cubezzzyesNov 23 20:10
prurigrogde33: I mean whether its compressed ;)Nov 23 20:10
cubezzzfrom a surplus placeNov 23 20:11
prurigrocubezzz: crazy, did they get it recently you mean?Nov 23 20:13
gde33The digital Tee Vee makes those nice screeking noises when it fails.Nov 23 20:13
cubezzzprurigro, yesNov 23 20:13
cubezzzand more than oneNov 23 20:13
prurigrocubezzz: I can't imagine what they'd be using one (or more than one) of those for, on that noteNov 23 20:14
cubezzzthe interest is to keep old machines workingNov 23 20:14
prurigroaside from a nice mantle pieceNov 23 20:14
prurigroahhhNov 23 20:14
prurigrodid they have a different connector than SCSI or IDE?Nov 23 20:14
cubezzzhard drive interfaces evolved from floppy interfacesNov 23 20:14
cubezzzMFM drives used edge connectorsNov 23 20:15
cubezzztwo cables, one for data and one for controlNov 23 20:16
prurigrooh interesting, that's quite a bit more complex than I'd picturedNov 23 20:16
cubezzzstuff like ST-506Nov 23 20:17
cubezzzthe first 5.25" driveNov 23 20:18
cubezzzthe control cable was 34 pinNov 23 20:18

prurigrogde33: I think hardware and software both have limitations, no matter where they're at, and I think the ideal balance is a combination of hardware speed and compression resulting in the least amount of lossNov 23 20:19
gde33I prefer less opperationsNov 23 20:19
prurigrocubezzz: holy, I didn't realize they were that old either (checking out the wiki page)Nov 23 20:20
cubezzz1980 was the start of the hard drive era for microsNov 23 20:21
cubezzzbefore ST-506, there was nothingNov 23 20:21
prurigrogde33: even reading raw data is an operation-- add hardware acceleration of an encoding algorithm and you essentially have the same speed with less throughputNov 23 20:21
gde33if one opperation fails the whole picture is goneNov 23 20:22
gde33the old style Tee Vee had this nice snow in the picture, everything was still there. :)Nov 23 20:22
MinceRdigital TV has no snowNov 23 20:22
MinceRand no ghostingNov 23 20:22
MinceRand none of that crap :)Nov 23 20:22
gde33the screen goes blackNov 23 20:23
gde33hahaNov 23 20:23
MinceRhere i get better picture quality via DVB-C than via analog cableNov 23 20:23
cubezzzanalog tv was more robust in some waysNov 23 20:23
prurigrocubezzz: just finished reading along those lines-- I'd honestly thought consumer hard disks were closer to 85' or so, very interesting though, especially that they were that size at that pointNov 23 20:23
prurigromusta been seriously priceyNov 23 20:23
cubezzzbut with a decent tower, antenna and location, digital is betterNov 23 20:23

gde33I just found a fun angle on my Theoretical opensourcing idea. If it's propriatary technology can be sold any business should consider it. Sources of revenue are always high on the agenda. When the business eventually goes bankrupt the open source commies can loot it :)Nov 23 20:25
cubezzzprurigro, home hobbyists didn't use punch cards thoughNov 23 20:25

schestowitzNa, its OK. No more sucky than Gnome3. Yup its dumbed down like G3. To be honest I don't really like any of the new Linux Desktops really. Anything you need to fiddle with a text file to get working is a real PITA, KDE is way too faffy and heavy, XFCE I could never get on with and Enlightenment still isn't there yet (and is just as faffy as KDE). LXDE is OK, but just too light. Gnome 2 was (and still is) the best for a screen and mouse Nov 23 20:57
