schestowitzI don't want everything for free. I want to support freedom financially when necessary. Making this easier is one of my goals. Humble Bundle donation statistics consistently show that other GNU/Linux users are prepared to reward good work too - http://s.coop/7tu5.Jan 07 00:48

schestowitzThere is an intrinsic relationship between work of value to a person or community, like Free Software, and the reward the producer of that work receives. Unfortunately many proprietary products undermine this relationship by hiding profit centres in costs that do not reflect the cost to the company of producing their product (see Eric S. Raymond.Jan 07 00:48
schestowitzWhen products that serve a community need resources, they must ask for them, and state clearly and honestly what will happen if they aren't received (ie the software may no longer be maintained). Targeted fundraising campaigns to this end can work very well, and have been used by the likes of Ardour, KDE, and LibreOffice successfully.Jan 07 00:48
schestowitzMaintaining direct contact between consumers and producers, such as Free Software developers and Free Software users, is key to the will of the public to contribute. Disassociating producers from consumers as record companies, production companies, and whitelabbellers / resellers often do, undermines this connection, and the feeling of responsibility that users feel to support their producers.Jan 07 00:48

schestowitzI don't think we disagree Sam. But there's been a sea change in society over the last 15 years, starting with 'free' software on magazines and more recently with free stuff/reduced prices on the www. I very much suspect global markets would have driven things this way anyway.Jan 07 00:48
schestowitzI'm also not at all convinced many really understand or even care about the difference between beer and thought when it comes to free. For many you will probably find that 'being a product' in exchange for 'free' use of a service is a perfectly fair exchange.Jan 07 00:48

schestowitz"As you say, many people don't seem to understand what 'free' means in relation to such free products. Informed decisions are fine by me, but that's not what drove web 2.0, or the exorbitant valuations of companies like Facebook. Trouble is that such misunderstanding makes it all the more difficult to sell the merits of Free Software applications to users. Hosting is hard to provide for 'free' if you aren't fleecing the user some Jan 07 00:48
schestowitzother way. I may find the time to write a useful Free Software app, but I can't find the money to host it free of charge."Jan 07 00:49
