schestowitzI could give you the long story on journals (including those that accumulate conferences proceedings, e.g. LNCS), but in short it's a massive racket. Thumbs up to those who play along: "The grassroots effort, The Cost of Knowledge has obtained a commitment from 7,642 researchers around the world (as of this writing) to refrain from publishing, refereeing, and/or doing editorial work for Elsevier journals."Mar 06 17:55
schestowitzI have avoided submitting papers for 6 years now, either to conferences or journals. I also dodge reviews for the giants who exploit us academics, except when people who appraise me ask me to review a paper (very time-consuming task if done properly). We need to remove "publishers" from this so-called ecosystem. They are like the "recording industry", exploiting the music industry (artists).Mar 06 17:57

schestowitzOvertime. And publishers essentially pocket money covered for by goodwill of academics (passionate about their fields) and taxpayers who are forced to funnel money into R&D. schestowitzI once had a long USENET discussion with a librarian that put it marvelously well in words. If only I remembered how he explained this racket, wherein the universities and other parties participate; it works as long as they all collude, but if the chain breaks (one cogwhell like reviewers), it's kaput left and right. Some of the costs are passed not to taxpayers but to students, who take loans for tuition that feeds this Mar 06 18:30

I explained to her back then about PageRank and told her that reputation and track record of work will help separate work of merit from k00ks. Then there's the question of citation and what's permissible as reference (more papers actually start linking to WWW); because, hehe, we Mar 06 18:30

qu1j0t3'Abdelrazik is a Canadian citizen who spent more than a year living in the lobby of the Canadian embassy in Sudan. He could not leave the embassy because he faced a risk of arbitrary detention and torture in Sudan. He could not return to Canada because the Canadian government refused to issue him travel documents due to national security concerns. This refusal came despite his never having Mar 06 20:44
