schestowitz | I have used Ubuntu Linux and contrary to what the article says, it has not abandoned the desktop to Microsoft. The Ubuntu UI was pretty powerful. And getting more so, I noticed. It did have some snags at times that made things a bit rough in small ways. | Mar 12 10:45 |
schestowitz | It was far, far, far more productive for a developer than Windows was. With Windows, you are faced with the well-known, crappy Windows 'shell' (CMD.EXE), a toy left over from the 1970s. Windows also is a headache in a world where having Windows machines around means that Windows-malware is injected into the environment. Most developers would rather sidestep such headaches. | Mar 12 10:45 |

schestowitz | - Windows Server: 2/3 of market uses Linux now and 1/3 Windows; after Microsoft famously declared rising interest in Linux would not cost it any market share | Mar 12 10:45 |
schestowitz | Ubuntu is a sensible choice for developers creating web apps and web services. | Mar 12 10:45 |
schestowitz | It's shell [command line interpreter] is hundreds of times more powerful than Windows. Linux/Unix are the operating systems used in virtually all current smart phones and mobile computers. | Mar 12 10:45 |
schestowitz | It is compatible with Java, which is a frequent choice for programming IT services and web sites. | Mar 12 10:45 |
schestowitz | Network control is more powerful and explicit than Windows, which frequently suffers from a complaint that it lacks transparency. There is also little risk of an 'attack' by Microsoft's Bing/etc. marketing departments, which break the rules of what is insane to put into a security patch for Windows; like: unnecessary/unwanted products with critical security flaws in them. | Mar 12 10:45 |
schestowitz | There are more games for Windows than Linux. If that matters to you, you probably want to stick with Windows but reconsider if Windows 8 breaks all your games. | Mar 12 10:45 |

schestowitz | Things in the computer market seem to comprise a lot of 'pendulums'. | Mar 12 12:12 |
schestowitz | Right now I think the market and consumers are more inclined to desire different/diverse operating systems than ever before. They have been burned badly by overmuch leaning on one, as that clearly led Microsoft to assume it was 'entitled' to consumers business -- no matter what. | Mar 12 12:12 |
schestowitz | Blaming a lot of its problems on its high market share seemed irresponsible and wrong before but now that the pendulum has swung away from Microsoft, rationales like that basically scream "get away from me! get something slightly less pervasive!" | Mar 12 12:12 |
schestowitz | i don't think technical people or mass market consumers will rush into any company's or platforms arms and say, "Be the next Microsoft. Become just like Microsoft so I can get away from Microsoft!" | Mar 12 12:12 |
schestowitz | I think consumers and corporations will go for platforms, operating systems, and hardware units that have different implementations but can behave the same way and can have a large chunk of software be the same on different platforms. | Mar 12 12:12 |
schestowitz | That's really what made Linux not only successful but evolve and adapt to so many different things so very quickly. The same can be said of Unix. | Mar 12 12:12 |
schestowitz | Right now, Apple's taking long strides basically technologically ahead of other players; doing engineering and manufacturing their competition cannot touch right now. | Mar 12 12:12 |
schestowitz | Google is using less cutting edge tech but is right on Apple's tail and overlapping in some areas. I think the fact they had an officer sitting in Apple's closed boardroom meetings taking notes for years gave them an advantage in copying what Apple did a few years back easily. But I don't think it will be as easy now for them to guess what Apple is doing right now, or even did 2-3 years ago. They just have to see what goes on | Mar 12 12:12 |
schestowitz | shelves after the end of each R&D cycle. | Mar 12 12:12 |
schestowitz | But for the short term, Google was able to parley that into rushing some tech out the door with a lot less R&D cost and push its 'product' prices way down. | Mar 12 12:12 |
schestowitz | What Google's Android is bombing hard on is reliability in the form of compatibility/safety/dependability: | Mar 12 12:12 |
schestowitz | 1) Small screens need homogeneity and Android geometries are all over the place; no standard. On big + hi-rez screens, not a problem. But tiny ones, yeah. [If they catch up and go with HDTV full rez like Apple did on latest iPad this problem goes away at least for their handheld just not phones]. | Mar 12 12:12 |
schestowitz | 2) Any given month, most of the Android units on shelves or mail ordered are far behind the current Android OS. That hurts computer safety/security, compatibility with latest apps, ability to market a product for the latest OS. Kind of a mess. Consumers installing their own vanilla version of the OS is definitely not the OS. IF it was that easy, the manufactures would be doing it and consumers wouldn't be trying to slam one | Mar 12 12:12 |
schestowitz | in themselves. | Mar 12 12:12 |
schestowitz | 3) The security is atrocious. They have a firewall but for such a volatile interactive piece of tech like a smart phone, you would think they would carefully review apps like Apple instead of shipping so much malware particularly trojans. | Mar 12 12:12 |
schestowitz | 4) Not sure how the Oracle lawsuit will shake out. If Google's Java API violates the open source code license then they might have to writ their own Java interpreter from scratch, pay Google a ton of money, switch the platform from Java to "Go!". | Mar 12 12:12 |
schestowitz | Windows had low market share on servers, surged for a while and got a lot, and then lost a fair bit to Linux, surprising Microsoft because they publicly predicted they would lose no market share to Linux. Wrong intel for investors, there. Microsoft has 1/3 server market share today and Linux has 2/3 server market share. | Mar 12 12:12 |
schestowitz | But, on the desktop Microsoft retained a much bigger chunk of the OS department, despite some erosion to competitors. That tells me, consumers like choice and even if they have one brand for say the desktop niche, they prefer to be able to use a different brand for the server niche because... they're different! | Mar 12 12:12 |
schestowitz | The status quo of the web also makes this case for diversity. Some people who are set in the past (a narrow segment of it I might add) believe there's going to be one web browser any day now. No, that was never intended and never worked even halfway well. Microsoft's IE, Mozilla's Firefox, and Google Chrome have huge slices of market share. If you look at web engines (semi-smart, if you don't take it too far) then the WebKit | Mar 12 12:12 |
schestowitz | engine from Google+Apple has huge market share -- and, is used in different apps on different platforms a LOT but not totally by any means. | Mar 12 12:12 |
