schestowitz_bed2"Oct 22 01:41
schestowitz_bed2I'm not sure it's fair to say the Guardian censored the leaks. They've been under so much censoring pressure -- both from the UK authorities, and some opinion-makers (e.g. MPs) in the UK. And they've basically resisted or circumvented all of it.Oct 22 01:41
schestowitz_bed2In terms of not releasing absolutely everything I think it's a wise move, given the (non-guardian) mainstream media's willingness to twist anything into evidence that these leaks are detrimental to national interest.Oct 22 01:41
schestowitz_bed2In the long run, that would be the real loss -- for the public to be persuaded that the Guardian's actions are dangerous to the public. As long as the public sees the reasonableness of the Guardian's actions, it will stay on the Guardian's side and with a little more time, everything will be released.Oct 22 01:41

schestowitz_bed2Can you locate my account on your system? I wish to apply for some jobs.Oct 24 13:28
schestowitz_bed2Thanks,Oct 24 13:28

schestowitz_bed2==== Oct 24 13:28
schestowitz_bed2Two days have passed and no reply was sent to her, not even an acknowledgement of receipt. Could you please provide an update on this case? It's not fair to push people around and have them revisit the office, send E-mails, sign up in vain etc. If you are serious about recruiting, then at the very minimum please respond to people.Oct 24 13:28

schestowitz_bed2By missing that Assange’s lies were in the service of his cause and not merely a pathology, the film glosses over the most important part of Assange’s own story, which is that he revealed himself to be at once purist and mendacious, and that opinions of him devolved accordingly. You don’t get a sense of the feeling of sheer betrayal that the Guardian’s Nick Davies displays in the documentary Wikileaks: Secrets and Lies,Oct 26 17:29
schestowitz_bed2as he believes Cablegate could have moved public opinion more than it did had Assange reined in his worst tendencies. And there’s little to suggest why Daniel Domscheit-Berg would have gotten involved with such a smirking narcissist in the first place.Oct 26 17:29
schestowitz_bed2Cumberbatch is all twitches and nerves as Assange, but he’s got the wrong nerves. A look at Assange at the Oslo Freedom Forum reveals a big gap between Cumberbatch’s jumpy intensity and Assange’s glassy-eyed detachment. Cumberbatch portrays a man blind to his own emotions; in actuality, Assange understands his emotions, but they are not those of most people. His flattened, smooth-talking affect can be tremendously Oct 26 17:29
schestowitz_bed2seductive to those who are truly unskilled with emotion—like many hackers. As Cumberbatch portrays him, it’s difficult to imagine Assange holding much sway over techies, who tend to distrust overemotive sorts.Oct 26 17:29

schestowitz_bed2"Oct 26 22:04
schestowitz_bed2I probably have a longer history with Roy than anyone else online. At one time I considered him a good friend, and vigorously defended his position, even though his language and behaviour was rather odd, putting it mildly.Oct 26 22:04
schestowitz_bed2But I soon discovered that his eccentricity was a manifestation of something more disturbing - bigotry. The most startling examples of which were when he accused all Christians of supporting genocide, and dismissed my parents' deaths as a statistical anomaly.Oct 26 22:04
schestowitz_bed2And just to be clear, I'm not theist, but equally I'm not an anti-theist "militant" who accuses entire cultures of genocide, when it was actually committed by a handful of imperialist tyrants. I'm also disinclined to disrespect other people's dead relatives by dismissing their suffering and death as a statistical anomaly.Oct 26 22:04
schestowitz_bed2Frankly I feel like I should apologise for ever having supported Roy. Apart from his palpable bigotry, his research leaves much to be desired, which is a surprising failure for someone with a PhD. Roy has the annoying habit of supporting his claims with circular citations that just link right back to his own claims on his own website, around and around like a wild goose chase. There are exceptions, but the last time I read his Oct 26 22:04
schestowitz_bed2site (which admittedly was a long time ago) those exceptions were very rare.Oct 26 22:04
schestowitz_bed2It's not that Roy's claims are entirely false either, it's just that he often fails to back them up with hard evidence. The evidence is there for him to find, it's just that he either can't find it or he chooses not to cite it, preferring to cite himself instead, which I find very odd.Oct 26 22:04
schestowitz_bed2His position on Microsoft is generally correct, and trust me no one despises them more than I do, which is why I was initially so supportive of Roy's position, but he often fails to articulate the malfeasance of Microsoft's business activities in a meaningful and verifiable way, which again I find incredibly annoying. He'll get that Microsoft is up to no good, but then instead of exposing an actual violation of law or business Oct 26 22:04
schestowitz_bed2ethics, he'll waffle incoherent rhetoric, supported only by yet more incoherent rhetoric in another article on his own site.Oct 26 22:04
schestowitz_bed2The inevitable result is Roy has little credibility, ironically even though the corruption he's poorly attempting to expose is very real. Worse still, his bigotry and weak arguments actually do a great disservice to the Free Software community, painting us as a bunch of ranting loonies.Oct 26 22:04
schestowitz_bed2He's had successes too, though, such as his campaigns against Novell and Mono, although it's debatable if the final outcome for SUSE qualifies as a "success", given that it was assimilated by a gang of vulture capitalists led by Microsoft. The saving grace was that at least they lost the ability to leverage Novell's patents as a weapon against the Free Software community, thanks to a DOJ ruling. I absolutely guarantee that theyOct 26 22:04
schestowitz_bed2would have done so otherwise.Oct 26 22:04
schestowitz_bed2As for undermining support for Mono, that was a group effort, and although Roy's articles were the most publicised, I was the one who challenged Miguel de Icaza directly and exposed his pro-Microsoft agenda.Oct 26 22:04
schestowitz_bed2Which brings me to the point of your post: what you've just discovered is a cancer known as "pragmatism", a euphemism for betrayal, and I strongly agree that it's absolutely right that such betrayal should be exposed and vilified. That's what I did with Miguel de Icaza, that's what Roy did with Novell, that's what Greenwald did with Blackhurst, and that's what you've now done with Bruce Byfield.Oct 26 22:05
schestowitz_bed2There's nothing wrong with that, indeed I applaud it.Oct 26 22:05
schestowitz_bed2"Oct 26 22:05
schestowitz_bed2"I will at the moment comment only on one part of this that I think should be corrected.  There is only one person who can truly claim credit for "outing" Miguel as a kind of Microsoft mole; and that is Miguel himself ;).  Anyway he did so poorly everyone quickly saw him for what he was, long before anyone tried to say that, and I believe far more did so long before I ever heard you, let alone try to claim credit doing so.  Oct 26 22:05
schestowitz_bed2Yuck.  The rest I will think about and consider, because I am very busy today, I have just been nominated as our next tribal chief...wow...."Oct 26 22:05
schestowitz_bed2"Oct 26 22:07
schestowitz_bed2There were events that preceded and precipitated Miguel "outing" himself though, which might not otherwise have happened, and both Roy and I were party to those events, although Roy's role was primarily that of publishing my exchanges with Miguel. Certainly he has my gratitude for that.Oct 26 22:07
schestowitz_bed2You need to understand that there was a lot of denialism going on at the time, with people refusing to believe that Miguel could be a traitor, despite the propensity of evidence. All I did was bluntly challenge Miguel to explain himself, forcing him to voice his honest opinions about Microsoft and other issues, at which point it became crystal clear where his true loyalties lay.Oct 26 22:07
schestowitz_bed2It wasn't until after being publicly exposed that he declared his passion for all things Microsoft, revealed that he once even tried to work for them, started doing video interviews with Microsoft "evangelists" to whitewash its criminal past, and was ultimately rewarded for this "evangelism" with an MVP award. It says that users must not be able to disable the boot restrictions or use their own signing keys. In addition to being unacceptable in its own right, this requirement was a reversal from Microsoft's initial public position, which claimed that the Windows 8 program would not block Oct 24 07:54

schestowitz_bed2"t could be that OEMs rejected UEFI and used their own bootloaders for Windows 8 but that's not what Microsoft wanted. More importantly, Microsoft's failure shows us the danger of restricted boot in general and Microsoft in particular. They can't even upgrade the users they want to. What chance does anyone else have?"Oct 24 07:54

schestowitz_bed2"I actually have a dual boot system with Windows 8.1 and Linux. (Sorry, I actually do need Microsoft Word for my school work.) When 8.1 went in, it put its own bootloader first in the list of bootloaders to try. But I was able to hit escape in that initial startup phase and rearrange the bootloaders to something sane. rEFInd is excellent for always being able to get me to something I need. Now when I boot 8.1, a little message Oct 24 11:44

schestowitz_bed2Hi,Oct 24 13:28
schestowitz_bed2Last week my wife came to your office. She was redirected by your staff to the Web site. She signed up for an account in order to make an application. The signup process, however, was broken. Despite the application process saying it that it had been completed and next there will be a verification E-mail, this E-mail never came. My wife went again to your office (within hours) to inquire about this signup, hoping you could Oct 24 13:28
schestowitz_bed2rectify things or recover all the data to send the E-mail. Your staff told her to wait a while longer and, failing that, send an E-mail to manchester@brookstreet.co.uk. The following day, as nothing has progressed, she sent the following E-mail:Oct 24 13:28

schestowitz_bed2Hi,Oct 24 13:28
schestowitz_bed2Yesterday afternoon I came to your office after I had submitted all my details for Full Account at your site and your server did not send me a verification E-mail. The lady at your office asked me to send my CV to this address, saying it would be fine. She also asked for my name so that she can (hopefully) find my application on your system.Oct 24 13:28
schestowitz_bed2Can you locate my account on your system? I wish to apply for some jobs.Oct 24 13:28

It's not fair to push people around and have them revisit the office, send E-mails, sign up in vain etc. If you are serious about recruiting, then at the very minimum please respond to people.Oct 24 13:28

The use of X.509 attribute certificates to implement access control schemes based on group memberships is a feature unique to StrongSwan. schestowitz_bed2By missing that Assange’s lies were in the service of his cause and not merely a pathology, the film glosses over the most important part of Assange’s own story, which is that he revealed himself to be at once purist and mendacious, and that opinions of him devolved accordingly.
As Cumberbatch portrays him, it’s difficult to imagine Assange holding much sway over techies, who tend to distrust overemotive sorts.Oct 26 17:29

schestowitz_bed2And just to be clear, I'm not theist, but equally I'm not an anti-theist "militant" who accuses entire cultures of genocide, when it was actually committed by a handful of imperialist tyrants. I'm also disinclined to disrespect other people's dead relatives by dismissing their suffering and death as a statistical anomaly.Oct 26 22:05
schestowitz_bed2Frankly I feel like I should apologise for ever having supported Roy. Apart from his palpable bigotry, his research leaves much to be desired, which is a surprising failure for someone with a PhD. Roy has the annoying habit of supporting his claims with circular citations that just link right back to his own claims on his own website, around and around like a wild goose chase. There are exceptions, but the last time I read his Oct 26 22:05
schestowitz_bed2site (which admittedly was a long time ago) those exceptions were very rare.Oct 26 22:05
schestowitz_bed2It's not that Roy's claims are entirely false either, it's just that he often fails to back them up with hard evidence. The evidence is there for him to find, it's just that he either can't find it or he chooses not to cite it, preferring to cite himself instead, which I find very odd.Oct 26 22:05
schestowitz_bed2His position on Microsoft is generally correct, and trust me no one despises them more than I do, which is why I was initially so supportive of Roy's position, but he often fails to articulate the malfeasance of Microsoft's business activities in a meaningful and verifiable way, which again I find incredibly annoying. He'll get that Microsoft is up to no good, but then instead of exposing an actual violation of law or business Oct 26 22:05
schestowitz_bed2ethics, he'll waffle incoherent rhetoric, supported only by yet more incoherent rhetoric in another article on his own site.Oct 26 22:05
schestowitz_bed2The inevitable result is Roy has little credibility, ironically even though the corruption he's poorly attempting to expose is very real. Worse still, his bigotry and weak arguments actually do a great disservice to the Free Software community, painting us as a bunch of ranting loonies.Oct 26 22:05
schestowitz_bed2He's had successes too, though, such as his campaigns against Novell and Mono, although it's debatable if the final outcome for SUSE qualifies as a "success", given that it was assimilated by a gang of vulture capitalists led by Microsoft. The saving grace was that at least they lost the ability to leverage Novell's patents as a weapon against the Free Software community, thanks to a DOJ ruling. I absolutely guarantee that theyOct 26 22:05
schestowitz_bed2would have done so otherwise.Oct 26 22:05
schestowitz_bed2As for undermining support for Mono, that was a group effort, and although Roy's articles were the most publicised, I was the one who challenged Miguel de Icaza directly and exposed his pro-Microsoft agenda.Oct 26 22:05
schestowitz_bed2Which brings me to the point of your post: what you've just discovered is a cancer known as "pragmatism", a euphemism for betrayal, and I strongly agree that it's absolutely right that such betrayal should be exposed and vilified. That's what I did with Miguel de Icaza, that's what Roy did with Novell, that's what Greenwald did with Blackhurst, and that's what you've now done with Bruce Byfield.Oct 26 22:05
schestowitz_bed2There's nothing wrong with that, indeed I applaud it.Oct 26 22:05

schestowitz_bed2"I will at the moment comment only on one part of this that I think should be corrected.
After that, he stopped even pretending to support GNU/Linux or Free Software in general, writing a series of scathing Oct 26 22:07
schestowitz_bed2criticisms which claimed "Linux" had failed. Today he develops proprietary software using Microsoft technology.Oct 26 22:07
schestowitz_bed2I'm not claiming sole credit, you understand, I'm just explaining that if Miguel had not been challenged by myself and others, then he might never have been exposed as a traitor, and in all probability he'd still be poisoning Free Software with Microsoft's toxic ideology and patents.Oct 26 22:07

schestowitz_bed2Techrights is Connecting the Dots Between Microsoft Anti-Competitive behavior and NSA Spying  Communities Dominate Brands has a new article revisiting the Elop Effect. Microsoft revisionists would like us all to think Nokia was a dying company, especially at the shareholder meeting where they are selling the handset unit.  CDB has presented this before, but the charts only get better/worse with time.  Oct 26 22:11

schestowitz_bed2It is worth adding that Yahoo had fought the NSA over privacy, but as soon as Microsoft preyed on Yahoo the NSA basically gained access to Yahoo’s treasure trove of secrets (lots of browsing history, mail, and other personal data from all around the world, including search terms with IPs/real IDs)Oct 26 22:11
schestowitz_bed2Oh yeah, data rape and spying.  At the time, people thought the fight was over the marketing power of search engines and killing off a big GNU/Linux using company.  I wonder how many people imagined that the US federal government's slap down of Google and favoritism for a much worse Microsoft deal was actually driven by favoritism for PRISM partner number one.  At the time, it seemed incomprehensible, like someone had taken a Oct 26 22:11
schestowitz_bed2big bribe.  I knew that Microsoft cooperated with tyrannical governments like Communist China to censor, unmask and jail dissidents but the level of cooperation systematic pilfering revealed by Snowden was beyond my wildest nightmares. Oct 26 22:11

schestowitz_bed2Larry Lessig tried to reform copyright law for years. He hardly succeeded. Corrupt politicians like Chris Dodd — those who literally bribe Congress — always get their way. Lessig understood this after years of campaigning regarding copyright law. Instead, after years of wasted effort, he turned his attention to fighting corruption in US Congress. it’s no simple task, either. Perhaps we too, at least in the coming years, Oct 26 22:13
schestowitz_bed2will need to dedicate some time to fighting the patent issue from a political angle, not just a technical and logical angle. From the technical point of view, the argument was resolved a long time ago.Oct 26 22:13
