schestowitz_bed2'The issue is that although TrueCrypt is open source, the binaries you can download from the website don't match the binaries you get if you build the code yourself. There's no good way to know what the differences are, and the developers aren't saying what they are or how they built it. The source code for TrueCrypt has been analyzed and is deemed secure.."Oct 19 01:51
schestowitz_bed2"A discrepancy in binaries does not seem particularly surprising. They are likely built with different libraries with a different version of the compiler. But the bottom line remains the same: whenever you accept binaries from anybody, you are trusting that person/organization.'Oct 19 01:52

schestowitz_bed2"15 minutes of fame is short-lived media publicity or celebrity of an individual or phenomenon. The expression was coined by Andy Warhol, who said in 1968 that "In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes." The phenomenon is often used in reference to figures in the entertainment industry or other areas of popular culture, such as reality television and YouTube. It is believed that the statement was an adaptation ofOct 19 06:11

schestowitz_bed2> Hi, Roy,Oct 19 10:36
schestowitz_bed2>Oct 19 10:36
schestowitz_bed2> Awesome set of posts yesterday.  Unfortunately, the site's UI can'tOct 19 10:36
schestowitz_bed2> handle it.  They've run off the end of the stack in both the RSS feedOct 19 10:36
schestowitz_bed2> and the storied feed:Oct 19 10:36

schestowitz_bed2> Maybe it's time to switch CMS, leave the old posts on the old CMS butOct 19 10:36
schestowitz_bed2> put the new ones on a news CMS.  Do you think Drupal would be up to theOct 19 10:36
schestowitz_bed2> task?Oct 19 10:36
schestowitz_bed2I thought about it because we're getting new Drupal clients and my employer wants us to get better at Drupal. Wouldn't consistency wrt search etc. be an issue?Oct 19 10:36
schestowitz_bed2Given my more limited time as of late, I rethought my posting methods, format, tweeting, material collection methods, IRC logs, etc. Please provide suggestions, I am very open to cnanges... I can still put around 50 hours per week into techrights. If we don't change habits, we'll all become passe; D* is big at the moment as a community, but I don't think a techrights pod would gain enough momentum. identi.ca is pretty much dead andOct 19 10:36
schestowitz_bed2last night I spent 10 mins looking at tuxmachines.org logs from the past 6 years, seeing how the site keeps dying every year since 2008 (rapid decline)... I recently donated to motivate Susan to keep it going. Groklaw is gone, Phoronix survives for now, LXer has no original content, and Linux Today is kind of in maintenance mode. Not sure where gaps and opportunities are -- or rather -- what Linux users are truly after. MicrosoftOct 19 10:36
schestowitz_bed2is quickly moving off the front pages and the NSA news are not being taken for granted. First time of many exciting political news since late 2010 (cablegate/wikileaks) but nothing too exciting now on the horizon, just lots of Android, taken for granted by now and resistant to FUD. Patents are a boring thing that's just about patent trolls now.Oct 19 10:36
schestowitz_bed2Sorry for the senseless quick tryping. I just need ideas, I think out aloud. We do need some changes; decision on how the hours will be spent can determine the future direction of the site and community.Oct 19 10:36

schestowitz_bed2> I think that the current software is hurting the presence of the site.Oct 19 16:14
schestowitz_bed2> It's too hard to navigate back through old posts and so on.  I haven'tOct 19 16:14
schestowitz_bed2> used Drupal since shortly after it came out and, thank goodness, haven'tOct 19 16:14
schestowitz_bed2> had to touch PHP since 2003.  However, it has come a long way in thatOct 19 16:14
schestowitz_bed2> time and if you are also using Drupal at work you can reduce some of theOct 19 16:15
schestowitz_bed2> overhead by eliminating the extra system, or at least sidelining it.Oct 19 16:15
schestowitz_bed2I thought about it for an hour today. Still undecided. Need good themes...Oct 19 16:15
schestowitz_bed2>> D* is big at the moment as a community, but I don't think aOct 19 16:15
schestowitz_bed2>> techrights pod would gain enough momentum.Oct 19 16:15
schestowitz_bed2>Oct 19 16:15
schestowitz_bed2> I can never get D* to work in my browsers.  Overall, the microbloggingOct 19 16:15
schestowitz_bed2> seems a waste of time unless the output can be automated from a feed.Oct 19 16:15
schestowitz_bed2> Then it is just other people wasting their time.Oct 19 16:15
schestowitz_bed2Microblogging doesn't take long; it's full articles that do. They require proofreading and outlining sometimes.Oct 19 16:15
schestowitz_bed2> There is some change.  I know of two M$ monkeys that have gone throughOct 19 16:15
schestowitz_bed2> re-training.  Actually one is in the process of retraining.  Both on RPMOct 19 16:15
schestowitz_bed2> distros RHEL/CentOS.  That's only a data set of 2 but they are inOct 19 16:16
schestowitz_bed2> different states and previously had never considered non-M$ products.Oct 19 16:16
schestowitz_bed2> Now they see Linux as a career progression.Oct 19 16:16

schestowitz_bed2>Oct 19 16:16
schestowitz_bed2> As I keep writing, the rents are what keep funding the marketingOct 19 16:16
schestowitz_bed2> companies that M$ hires.  Once the monopolies on OEMs and onOct 19 16:16
schestowitz_bed2> productivity software file formats go away, the rents go and it willOct 19 16:16
schestowitz_bed2> suddenly get relatively quiet except for religious types like Icahn andOct 19 16:16
schestowitz_bed2> unfunded boosters and co.Oct 19 16:16
schestowitz_bed2> The US administration and M$ are trying to make the discussion aboutOct 19 16:18
schestowitz_bed2> trolls but the main cause is the software patents themselves.  Lessig'sOct 19 16:18
schestowitz_bed2> approach is right, go upstream.  I think Bruce Perens made that move aOct 19 16:18
schestowitz_bed2> long time ago.  Neither have the money to outbid M$ lobbyists, but faceOct 19 16:18
schestowitz_bed2> time helps almost as much.Oct 19 16:18
schestowitz_bed2Maybe Techrights should cover some non-tech aspects? If so, what CMS? And any good themes? If not, it might just complicate the site and make it harder to maintain.Oct 19 16:18
