schestowitz_bed2Techrights is one of the best referenced tech news sites out there, +Homer Slated.  He's been hyperlinking and quoting his sources since his usenet days and he's always been good at it.  You can compare that to other tech news sites that still pretend they are paper publications and that people will believe them because they own a press and have advertisers and are "professionals".    Techrights, after Groklaw, stands asOct 27 17:24
schestowitz_bed2one of the best collection of tech related articles around.  That's remarkable for a blog.  Oct 27 17:24
schestowitz_bed2Comparing the entire site or even single articles to a dissertation is unfair.  That kind of work comes from organizing a collection of observations and opinions, the sort of work that the community is doing now.  If Roy were a professional writer or pundit instead of a scientist, he would be writing books ... and that might make him very hungry for the reasons we are talking about.  Oct 27 17:24
schestowitz_bed2What you noticed was a lack of internal organization, something that's natural and being fixed.  Each article was mostly complete on it's own and served it's purpose or recording thought. Referencing previously proved points was less important than documenting current points of interest.  Things changed so fast that the work was hardly been complete before becoming common knowledge and needing no further proof.  The Oct 27 17:24
schestowitz_bed2community is tying everything together with wiki articles, linking things by subject and date.  A good example of the new organization is the article on Microsoft astroturf that I cite above.Oct 27 17:24
schestowitz_bed2It turns out that much of the information and collection is still useful.  His research is still sitting for anyone who needs to make a case.  Roy also has a collection of the original articles to protect against bit rot and intentional memory holing.  If you can't find an article, he's probably got a copy he can email you - and that is what you should expect from a PhD level researcher.   We all know that Microsoft doesOct 27 17:24
schestowitz_bed2everything it can to destroy original documentation.   Roy has many of the things that Microsoft has erased elsewhere.  Intelligently referenced, this guards against history being rewritten and serves as an important check on Microsoft's criminal behavior.   Oct 27 17:24
schestowitz_bed2I've seen Roy be strong headed but I've never seen him act like a bigot or devalue human life.  I'm sorry to hear you had that disagreement with Roy and I hope that it's a misunderstanding or impersonation.  It sounds very out of character.Oct 27 17:24

schestowitz_bed2As for his research, there's certainly a lot of it, but most of it is incomprehensible gibberish. schestowitz_bed2You and edge-op, the more the merrier.  Oct 27 17:27
schestowitz_bed2The exchange in COLA confuses me.  In one thread you were angry with Roy for injecting "Like watching a Creationist defending genocide or some other things while ignoring logic." On it's own, that's goofy but hardly a mark of bigotry.  Creationists do have to ignore science and while I would no longer link them to genocide, nineteenth century religion and racism lead just to that.  I was wrote something about it myself Oct 27 17:27
schestowitz_bed2the other day, https://joindiaspora.com/posts/3203706  If you go read Beveridge you see that he believes that the US are "God's People" because they had the ability to take over the continent.  That is, God's favor was revealed if you were good at killing.  I understand that's off topic and joking about it that way might offend free software allies but COLA looks like a cesspit and the second thread is wildly off topic. schestowitz_bed2In the second thread, I can't see why you think Roy takes your parent's death lightly.  It looks more like he thinks hospitals are still a good place for sick people to go.  Oct 27 17:27
schestowitz_bed2As someone who works in hospitals, I'm absolutely horrified to hear about diseases that people catch there and I'm very, very sorry to hear about your parents.  Richard Stallman has collected a lot of articles showing that indiscriminate use of antibiotics on farm animals is making superbugs.  I'm also worried about people's casual use of scrubs as street clothes.  The whole point of special clothes in hospitals is to Oct 27 17:27
schestowitz_bed2keep the street out of the hospital and the hospital out of the street.  The great success of antibiotics may have made people lazy about some practices.  As a physicist, I can't really say.  Oct 27 17:27

schestowitz_bed2I do not have the time right now to get into a G+ discussion about Roy and the many times his theories crossed over from plausibly hinted at by the evidence and pure conjecture (with often horrible analysis). Are there things that are correct in Roy's writings? Yes, absolutely.Oct 27 17:28
schestowitz_bed2However, when one starts to cross that line into conspiracy theory it becomes a minefield to try and find that content.Oct 27 17:28
schestowitz_bed2As for your apparent need to dog Bruce, what I'm learning about you is that you get wound up about things and then just. can't. let. it. go. You're more aggressive than I care to deal with online; I wonder how you are offline. As for the quote you mined from Bruce (which, btw, is a pretty shameful tactic), he was noting that publishers pressure for more outlandish pieces, not that he caves into it. Maybe you are just Oct 27 17:28
schestowitz_bed2reading the worst into everything and that clouds your ability to read with clarity, but it really is sad to see someone misinterpret another person's words so consistently as you have with Bruce.Oct 27 17:28
schestowitz_bed2Long and short of it, I don't think you and I have much to discuss, not because we don't have common areas of interest, but because I don't think we communicate in a compatible fashion.Oct 27 17:28
schestowitz_bed2"Oct 27 17:28
schestowitz_bed2"Oct 27 17:29
schestowitz_bed2My anger in that thread was the result of an accumulation of Roy's bigoted invective spanning months, indeed years, not an isolated incident. And during that whole time I was generally supportive of Roy, in every other respect, but I warned him many times that if he didn't curb his bigotry then our friendship would be over. He wouldn't listen, but continued to berate all theists, not just "creationists", stigmatising Oct 27 17:29
schestowitz_bed2them as paedophiles and murderers, amongst other things, essentially regurgitating the bigoted rhetoric of that other militant extremist, Richard Dawkins, whom Roy apparently admires greatly. That last "genocide" remark was merely the final straw, although frankly his sickening "Steve Jobs liver" joke should have been my cue to call it a day.Oct 27 17:29
schestowitz_bed2Please understand that I'm not defending creationism, and I'm certainly not defending anyone who supports genocide (if indeed there is even a remote connection between the two), but to stigmatise vast groups of unique individuals as murderers and paedophiles, based on ancient history or the beliefs of a minority of extremists, is sheer bigotry. It's also off-topic trolling in a group like COLA, or frankly anywhere else, Oct 27 17:29
schestowitz_bed2but in every case it was Roy who changed the topic, by deliberately injecting his irrelevant bigoted remarks. In all the many years I was on COLA, I never once saw anyone else even broach the subject of religion, much less smear all theists as genocide supporters.Oct 27 17:29
schestowitz_bed2Personally I think the whole debate over theism is petty, and those who belligerently attack it are puerile and malicious. The manner in which the universe was created is of absolutely no consequence whatsoever. Determining that fact won't magically cure disease, or alleviate poverty, or prevent war, or have even the slightest impact on any other practical matter, so witnessing the spectacle of people attacking each Oct 27 17:29

schestowitz_bed> But congratulations, you bought yourself a Linux site.  Oct 29 16:05
schestowitz_bedI am delighted!Oct 29 16:05
schestowitz_bedTux Machines has been my favourite site for GNU/Linux news. I will try my best to serve its community well. In my mind, it'll always be Susan's site, so I will do my best to give exposure to your articles and never start a controversy there (the Novell thing cost me a lot because of all the backlash, which I saw as necessary when Microsoft patent deals became so scary for a real reason).Oct 29 16:05
schestowitz_bedI appreciate your staged approach in migrating. I can eventually deal with domain transfer (one company in Ireland is where I tend to put them), but the second phase will be copying the home directory, the database dump, then connecting them all (I experimented a lot with Drupal at work and home recently). When it's all tested and the transition is assured to be totally transparent to the community, to Google, etc. then Oct 29 16:05
schestowitz_bedit'll be the final step. I get it hosted gratis by a friend to whom I return a favour simply by promoting and defending FOSS; I also put banner ads for his hosting business.Oct 29 16:05
schestowitz_bedI want to ask you; how do you want me to format posts? Would you like many links per page? One link and excerpt? Maybe full-length opinion pieces that tie together news (a bit like Larabel's site)? I ask you because you know the community better and I want to preserve the spirit of Tux Machines.Oct 29 16:05
schestowitz_bedRegarding payment, tell me how you would like me to make my payment (maybe bank-to-bank transfer, maybe PayPal) and I will do this as early as next week.Oct 29 16:05
schestowitz_bedI want to assure you that the site will keep its identity and style. TM was always my _first_ go-to site, as somehow I found it much better -- content-wise -- than all other sites (I also loved Groklaw, esp. News Picks). It's you who built a wonderful site and it's you whose experience I will try to preserve.Oct 29 16:05

schestowitzHere is a summary of events, in case it helps understand what's wrong:Oct 30 18:26
schestowitz-About 40 hours ago: I run rsync to overwrite a local backup of mine (which was a week old). It's an overnight backup -- something which I wasn't doing much recently because I had hardware issues here in the house.Oct 30 18:26
schestowitz-3 hours or so later my inbox starts to fill with notifications generated by a service that polls the site every 10 minutes or so just to ensure it's online. The notification show the site going down for periods of around 10 minutes half a dozen times overnight.Oct 30 18:26
schestowitz-6 hours later when I wake up I cannot access the site from any machine in the house. The indirect (via gw) SSH session is still alive and shows site activity.Oct 30 18:26
schestowitz- I checked some iptable stuff (listing filters, processes) in case there's some filter rule, nothing found though.Oct 30 18:26
schestowitz- Throughout the day i get notifications of uptime-downtime about once an hour (lasting just a few minutes each time)Oct 30 18:26
schestowitz- 24 hours or so later the site becomes accessible to all my devices again. I write some posts and in the very middle of one post I get locked out again. Prior to this I become aware that facebook cannot access the site either and Glyn Moody tells me in Twitter that he can't, either.Oct 30 18:26
schestowitz- I do some googling and also check stuff locally and on the server. I realise it's always code 200 that's returned and the IP address is as follows:Oct 30 18:26

schestowitz_bed2Techrights is one of the best referenced tech news sites out there, +Homer Slated.
It sounds very out of character.Oct 27 17:24

schestowitz_bed2The exchange in COLA confuses me.

Determining that fact won't magically cure disease, or alleviate poverty, or prevent war, or have even the slightest impact on any other practical matter, so witnessing the spectacle of people attacking each Oct 27 17:29

schestowitz_bed2A friend of mine, whose life is dominated by pressure from work, tells me he wants to write a book but never had time. Another friend of mine keeps a memoir of his experiences and says that one day he hopes to publish it one way or another. schestowitz_bed> But congratulations, you bought yourself a Linux site.
It's you who built a wonderful site and it's you whose experience I will try to preserve.Oct 29 16:05

schestowitz-About 40 hours ago: I run rsync to overwrite a local backup of mine (which was a week old). It's an overnight backup -- something which I wasn't doing much recently because I had hardware issues here in the house.Oct 30 18:25
schestowitz-3 hours or so later my inbox starts to fill with notifications generated by a service that polls the site every 10 minutes or so just to ensure it's online. The notification show the site going down for periods of around 10 minutes half a dozen times overnight.Oct 30 18:25
schestowitz-6 hours later when I wake up I cannot access the site from any machine in the house. The indirect (via gw) SSH session is still alive and shows site activity.Oct 30 18:25
schestowitz- I checked some iptable stuff (listing filters, processes) in case there's some filter rule, nothing found though.Oct 30 18:25
schestowitz- Throughout the day i get notifications of uptime-downtime about once an hour (lasting just a few minutes each time)Oct 30 18:25
schestowitz- 24 hours or so later the site becomes accessible to all my devices again. I write some posts and in the very middle of one post I get locked out again. Prior to this I become aware that facebook cannot access the site either and Glyn Moody tells me in Twitter that he can't, either.Oct 30 18:25
