schestowitzKonqueror in KDE 4.10 with webkit seems to work it, but you have to turn on scripting and basically open yourself up to whatever is pushed. It's iicky. I think it also works with Midori and Iceweasel but it's been a while since I tried that.Dec 01 01:41
schestowitzNeedless to say, Chromium Browser does a find job. It's Diaspora that keeps me using it.Dec 01 01:41
schestowitzThe browser that came with Amazon's first Kindle Fire also worked and still works. Someone gave me one of those a couple of years ago. I never registered it and have used it for browsing. I'm sure Amazon has coupled it to my IP address and Diaspora use to know who I am and they might have lifted my password. One of these days, it will be easier to pave over it with Debian but that's low on my list of things to do.Dec 01 01:41

schestowitzFacebook and Gmail seem to be worse. My wife uses those and they no longer work on her Kindle. Her use of Facebook is why I got her a Chromebook - I tired of trying to keep up with changes that broke free browsers and dumped the problem into Google's hands.Dec 01 01:42
schestowitzIt seems odd that Google would chase MSFacebook's tail and make it work on Chromebook. It's not a game Google can win and Microsoft wins if they do because Microsoft wants everyone on Facebook instead of Google or the free web.Dec 01 01:42
schestowitzChanges to Gmail and Chromebook are less odd. She has also had some complaints about changes to the gmail web interface, which I pasted here a few days ago. When I got home, she showed me some of the changes and I agree that they are for the worse. One of them made it more difficult to add multiple pictures to email by removing a little check box under each picture. Another change made it more difficult to simply view a picture or Dec 01 01:42
schestowitzother file by eliminating a menu item. Users now have to know a Windoze like shortcut, pressing the O key and a control key at the same time. Generally, the changes force people to use Google's Drive and other online storage.Dec 01 01:42
schestowitzFree software is going to win all of this. Free software is what makes Google and Facebook work and we see more freedom respecting services cropping up to take the place of more difficult ones. Mediagoblin will displace YouTube, Diaspora and GNUSocial are displacing G+ and Facebook. As we create more compelling online experiences, people will dump the non free OS that increasingly discriminate against the free web. This is why Dec 01 01:42
schestowitzMicrosoft is trying so hard to lock down hardware and we need to keep an eye on Google.Dec 01 01:42

schestowitz"There should be a separate type of "logic" called "US logic". It's so ridiculous it's not even funny anymore. And the worst thing is that these absolute total crazy things happen in public sphere and nobody protests there. It's kinda like a mass maddness. I wonder if it's flawed culture, ignorance or lack of knowledge? r perhaps it's everything together combined, which only makes the matter worse."Dec 01 01:44
schestowitz"I would avoid stereotyping people by their location. Some people are just willfully ignorant."Dec 01 01:45
schestowitz"Well, agreed, Agora, but still ... there's this very specific culture there and I don't think we can deny it. This culture - when combined with the ignorance - is a truly explosive mixture. Just think about it for a second - where did we get this whole NSA spying from? or "war on X", where X can be anything, even most ridiculous thing under the sun?"Dec 01 01:45
schestowitz"The sun never sets on the empire :P"Dec 01 01:45
schestowitz"Is there anything special about the culture of the US empire? There's racism, but you can find that in all the 19th and 20th century european predecessors. The dominant culture is still anglo. There's evangelical christianity, which leads to a nasty kind of self righteousness but the nasty part is a belief in might makes right which is common to most empires. schestowitzAs the round-trip lag is well under a second, I tend to doubt a 3-second delay would be explained by it. There might be other/additional causes. Can you please confirm if performance issues persist? I can investigate this further for you.Dec 01 06:55

schestowitzsI have multiple addresses (about 22) in order to separate messages from known contacts and other mail, which would mostly be spam. Sadly, the notion of multiple addresses per person is poorly facilitated by PGP (although I do have two E-mails associated with that one key).Dec 03 01:55
schestowitzsI tried quitting E-mail in 2010 (except where it's obligatory), but I was never quite successful. I still depend on it for a lot of stuff. Sending passwords around in E-mail is like sending passwords written on an open postcard and there are many other reasons to quit E-mail, or redo it as Lavabit is trying to do. AFAIK, some people like Julian Assange "don't use E-mail", but I think it's a lie/exaggeration because many services Dec 03 01:55
schestowitzsrequire  an address for login/authentication.Dec 03 01:55
schestowitzsE-mail, like a lot of the Internet, seems to be well designed for easy surveillance ("intercepts") these days and a lot can be said about other "popular" protocols for communication (except perhaps encrypted IRC, NNTP, and so on -- medium types which are being crushed anyway, under pretexts like 'piracy', child pr0n, and terror -- I kid you not!).Dec 03 01:55
schestowitzsI sure hope that encrypted E-mail and other forms of OTR/private communication will see a surge in the wake of Surveillance State revelations. There is a lot of network effect/peer pressure contributing to the momentum of surveillance-friendly communication, let aside stuff like DNS, GPS, and other means for tracking so-called "targets".Dec 03 01:55
schestowitzs> It is possible that they didn't make an effort to avoid theDec 03 02:01

schestowitzs> so why not?Dec 03 02:01
schestowitzsMITM in this context, _I guess_, would mean alteration of messages by a party in the medium (middle of key exchange). I already heard of E-mails being modified during transmission (rare, but I did hear about it a few years ago).Dec 03 02:01
schestowitzsIf PGP gained popularity (especially among so-called "targets"), then I guess such cracking attempts by the NSA/GCHQ would be attempted. Just look at their coordinated attack on Tor as of late.Dec 03 02:01
schestowitzsHi Richard,Dec 03 02:09
schestowitzsHave you advised Russia Today to make Ogg Theora/WebM versions of your interview with them? Yesterday I found your Bitcoin segment, but it was patent-encumbered (MPEG) and required JS, Flash, etc. The same was true the last time they interviewed you in London and the time you spoke to their clown in chief (not Sophie or Mr. Keiser) inside their studio.Dec 03 02:09
schestowitzsNow that TinyOgg is defunct, the only option I have other than linking to patent-encumbered formats is convert large videos and host them myself (which I have done before).Dec 03 02:09

schestowitzThe browser that came with Amazon's first Kindle Fire also worked and still works. Someone gave me one of those a couple of years ago. I never registered it and have used it for browsing. I'm sure Amazon has coupled it to my IP address and Diaspora use to know who I am and they might have lifted my password. schestowitzFacebook and Gmail seem to be worse.
This is why Dec 01 01:42

schestowitzsI have multiple addresses (about 22) in order to separate messages from known contacts and other mail, which would mostly be spam.
