r_schestowitzSo in the course of the last year I have come to UNDERSTAND why Samsung are quite so bad at FOSS.   It's a Korean cultural thing.Jul 05 16:53
r_schestowitzSamsung, despite their worldwide presence, are archetypically Korean.   They are some gigantic proportion of the GDP of Korea, and employ gigantic numbers of people in Korea.   Nearly all important development world happens in Korea.   All of the execs are in Korea.Jul 05 16:53
r_schestowitzWhat all of this means it that Samsung is a classic bureaucracy of top-down command-line and control.   Some of this is "unconditionally respect your elders", but also there is close to zero room for dissent or criticism.   Open Source is just utterly alien and weird to them.Jul 05 16:53
r_schestowitzThey also have power games within their "kingdoms".   Tizen is developed in a group outside of Samsung Mobile, so flows nicely into cameras, TVs, etc. because it is "there thing".    Samsung Mobile prefer Android, so they only passive-aggressively support it, as we have seen with the weedy roll-out of Tizen on mobile.    The last minute cancellation of the Samsung Z which was due to launch in Russia, for example, will have been cancelled byJul 05 16:53
r_schestowitzSamsung Mobile, even though the Tizen group had already trumpeted it from the rooftops, including JD Choi saying "Read my lips.  We will have a device in Q3", and were made to look like idiots.Jul 05 16:53
r_schestowitzSo yeah, fun times!Jul 05 16:53
r_schestowitz~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`Jul 05 16:53
r_schestowitzHi,Jul 05 16:53
r_schestowitzIf I recall correctly, you ranted about them making somewhat of a theatre of their 'transparency' (so-called community). From what I can father, LiMo was one of our clients and when Tizen took stewardship it was all taken under their wing, hardly any room for outsiders. Is that really the case? If Tizen going anywhere outside Samsung? Will WebOS ever go anywhere outside LG (also Korean)?Jul 05 16:53
r_schestowitz~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`Jul 05 17:05
r_schestowitzSamsung want their own Android-equivalent platform and they are fairly serious about that.   That is already worldwide, for Gear smartwatches, 2015 Smart TVs, cameras and dashing machines.    The Samsung Z1 smartphone is still regional, but not in Korea.   It's on sale in India, Indonesian, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and maybe one of two more places.   Tizen patheticly weedy launch on mobile is apparently at least partly due to internalJul 05 17:05
r_schestowitzpolitics, with one "King" loving it, and another, who runs Samsung Mobile, wanting to stick with Android.Jul 05 17:05
r_schestowitzLimo Foundation got renamed as Tizen Association.   The are mainly a marketing group and have had no control whatsoever.  Linux Foundation also have no control.   Tizen Association did have their chair being from NTT Docomo (who were going to launch a Tizen device in Japan in 2013.  That never happened).   He has recently been replaced by somebody from Samsung, making it clear that they are completely subservient to Samsung.   Even if theyJul 05 17:05
r_schestowitzhadn't been, it wouldn't have made any different, because they never had any power.    All power sat with the Tizen Technical Steering Group (JD Choi from Samsung and Imad Sousou (spit) from Intel).   Now it looks like Intel have left, so all the power is with Samsung.Jul 05 17:05
r_schestowitzI think we will end up with Tizen being Samsung's Android.  No more.   No less.   Source-open, not open source.   Good bit of open-washing going on.   Probably plenty of this - http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/10/googles-iron-grip-on-android-controlling-open-source-by-any-means-necessary/.Jul 05 17:05
-TechBytesBot/#techbytes-arstechnica.com | Google’s iron grip on Android: Controlling open source by any means necessary | Ars Technica [ http://ur1.ca/fx0mu ]Jul 05 17:05
r_schestowitzThe one thing which Tizen will have other Android though, is better heritage.   Tizen is effectively just another GNU/Linux distro, which happens to be targeting mobile/wearable/other platforms.   EFL for the UI.   Very normal stuff elsewhere.   They are actually adding MORE standard open source libraries for developers to use directly, rather than making their own Tizen-specific wrappers.Jul 05 17:05
r_schestowitzTizen 2.3, for example, added ...Jul 05 17:05
r_schestowitz    Open Source LibrariesJul 05 17:05
r_schestowitz        The following open source libraries are additionally supported in the 2.3 release:Jul 05 17:05
r_schestowitz            libEXIF (0.6.21): Accessing EXIF meta information in image files.Jul 05 17:05
r_schestowitz            Json-glib (0.10.4): Manipulating JSON documents.Jul 05 17:05

r_schestowitz            Fontconfig (2.9.0) and Freetype (2.4.9): Rendering text and fonts.Jul 05 17:05
r_schestowitz            Minizip (1.2.5): Processing files in the ZIP format.Jul 05 17:05
r_schestowitz            Sqlite (3.7.13): Lightweight SQL database.Jul 05 17:05
r_schestowitz            Cairo (1.12.14): 2D graphics library.Jul 05 17:05
r_schestowitz            openssl (1.0.1g_1): Library for basic cryptographic functions.Jul 05 17:05
r_schestowitz            libOAuth (0.9.4): Open standard for authorization.Jul 05 17:05
r_schestowitzSo I think we'll have a good platform, but one which will likely continue only to get yearly source-drops or whatever, just like AOSP.Jul 05 17:05
r_schestowitzAs for webOS, I'm afraid I have no idea.   I would imagine that LG want their own platform too, and it may play out much the same.Jul 05 17:05
r_schestowitz~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`Jul 05 17:05
r_schestowitzWould you be OK with me doing an article about this and, if so, can attribute quotes to you?Jul 05 17:05
r_schestowitz~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`Jul 05 17:08
r_schestowitzSure - as long as I can have a look at the quotes before you publish.   This has been off-the-record candid discussion.   Anything in my already-published blog posts is obviously already in the public domain.Jul 05 17:08
r_schestowitzWe just need to be careful that observing the consequences of Korean culture coming from Westerners could easily be seen as racist and condescending.  Also my observations on the factions within Samsung is based on insider knowledge.   I don't want to burn bridges with Sansung employees who have confided in me by being too explicit about that.   Noting that Samsung are being laggards on Tizen for mobile, while pushing ahead full steam onJul 05 17:08
r_schestowitzother profiles is, however, something which any observer could see.   Probably better for that observation to come from you, not me.Jul 05 17:08
r_schestowitz~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`Jul 05 17:08
r_schestowitzWhat is all the quotes were unattributed? Would they help one deduce your identity?Jul 05 17:08
r_schestowitz~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`Jul 05 17:08
r_schestowitzI'm happy to be attributed in general.   I just want to ensure I don't burn bridges.  I suspect that unattributed quotes could be inferred as being from me.Jul 05 17:08
r_schestowitzDo you think you would want to mention the Korean culture thing?   And departmental rivalries?Jul 05 17:08
r_schestowitzYou could just quote from my public postings and pass of the rest as your own observations if you like?Jul 05 17:09
r_schestowitz~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`Jul 05 17:09
r_schestowitzI see what you mean. In that case, I can't quite publish it as an article. I thought more people deserved to read the un-sayable, but the cost is high.Jul 05 17:09
r_schestowitz~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`Jul 05 17:09
r_schestowitz>> The unsayable being the Korean cultural thing, or the internal rift?Jul 05 17:09
r_schestowitz~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`Jul 05 17:09
r_schestowitzThe internal rift. Sometimes horrible things happen because nobody dares say something, out of fear. I saw lots of this in the days of Nokia-Microsoft and Novell-Microsoft.Jul 05 17:09
r_schestowitz~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`Jul 05 17:09
r_schestowitzRight.Jul 05 17:09
r_schestowitzAnd you would want a quoted source, even if anonymous, to report on that rift?   You don't think that putting together your own analysis/speculation based on public information would cut it?Jul 05 17:09
r_schestowitzI also agree with your 'horrible things' analysis.   That's why I wrote this article.   That's why I wrote the Tizen Is Broken article back in August of last year.Jul 05 17:09
r_schestowitzFunnily enough, I think that the internal rift is actually a declining factor and might even be bridged soon, as Samsung's Android business suffers under the Chinese onslaught.  It seems that the Z1 has actually sold a million units.   So Tizen Mobile is not a complete flop.  And it is doing very nicely on the other profiles.  So the rift really slowed things down, but perhaps Tizen has acquired it's own momentum now.   Sansung areJul 05 17:09
r_schestowitzcertainly talking publicly about Tizen where a year or so back it was very fringe.Jul 05 17:09
