DaemonFC[m]I notice in the rip logs of Blu Spec CDs you almost never see where the rip process encountered an error and had to go back and re-read a sector.Jan 11 19:43
DaemonFC[m]In fact, I don't recall it ever happening.Jan 11 19:43
DaemonFC[m]I don't think that Blu Spec CDs sound any better because of the production process, but they tend to go back to master recordings and do a new mastering process that's much better than original or even "remastered" regular CD releases.Jan 11 19:44
DaemonFC[m]Because old stuff tends to be a lot quieter and when they "remaster" it, they often make it way too loud, and distorted, so if something says SHM-CD or Blu Spec, you're probably dealing with better mastering because they're positioning it as a premium product.Jan 11 19:46
DaemonFC[m]These things can still cost you $40 USD (equivalent) in Japan, so they're not exactly cheap.Jan 11 19:46

DaemonFC[m]I'm getting "Not Accurate: Partial Match with Offset 0" on all of these Blu Spec 2 rips.Jan 12 20:47
DaemonFC[m]I opened them up with spek to see a spectrogram, and it looks like they all pretty much top out around 21 kHz, but they have some band energy that goes all the way up to 22 kHz.Jan 12 20:47
DaemonFC[m]That leaves a few possibilities. 1. They're fakes. They were encoded with a lossy codec at some point and someone converted them to FLAC.Jan 12 20:48
DaemonFC[m]However, this does not look at all like anything that an MP3 codec would do. And certainly not LAME.Jan 12 20:49
DaemonFC[m]MP3 has the scalefactor band 21 problem, so when looking at a spectrogram of an MP3 encoded by LAME, there starts to be very telling signs that it was an MP3 because severe distortions start sticking out around the 16-18 kHz area on up.Jan 12 20:50
DaemonFC[m]Even at CBR 320, the highest setting on LAME, the highest frequency range would be heavily distorted, but not like this. It would be mostly there, but "shaved" in a jagged pattern. Jan 12 20:51
DaemonFC[m]Opus and fdk-aac simply lop off very high frequencies altogether to save bits.Jan 12 20:52
DaemonFC[m]FhG MP3, which is used by Windows Media Player does the same thing.Jan 12 20:52
DaemonFC[m]So if these are lossy, the likeliest suspects would be Ogg Vorbis, which seems unlikely since barely anyone uses it, or Apple's AAC codec, which I don't know what to look for because I have never had the ability to encode a sample with it. Jan 12 20:53
DaemonFC[m]Explanation 2. Sony's engineers remastered these for the Blu Spec release and that's why they don' match the regular CD releases. While they were working off the master tape, they decided to lay off the dynamic range compression that was hideously abused throughout the last 30 years, and that's why the waveforms look like they do.Jan 12 20:56
DaemonFC[m]I'd say that the evidence points at Explanation 2. Included are an EAC extraction log, scans, and an aucdect and audiochecker log file that all determined that they are CDDA, and the sound of the files supports the notion that they just weren't mastered extremely loud. Jan 12 20:58
