DaemonFC[m]> what distro do you use now?Jan 13 08:43
DaemonFC[m]Fedora since Mandriva collapsed. I tried Ubuntu a couple times and didn't ultimately stick with it.Jan 13 08:43
DaemonFC[m]I've found a few bugs in things that I could have requested CVEs for if I had wanted to, but it was unlikely anyone would attack them.Jan 13 08:46
DaemonFC[m]Things like crashing GNOME Web via password manager with malformed web content. No way to run arbitrary code, but technically it could be considered denial of service.Jan 13 08:47
DaemonFC[m]I found that one because my bank's website triggered it accidentally.Jan 13 08:48
DaemonFC[m]The backtrace wasn't helpful to begin with, but one of the developers created a build that I could run and crash that produced a better backtrace, and the issue was fixed.Jan 13 08:49
DaemonFC[m]The systemd vulnerabilities have been pretty bad though.Jan 13 08:49
DaemonFC[m]In fact, the number of bugs that people are still finding in it is terrifying and unlikely to end as more stuff gets crammed in without worrying if existing features are robust enough to not collapse, leak memory, do bizarre things, or get attacked.Jan 13 08:50

XRevan86127 Pleroma feedsubs in total, 14 of them "inactive" (dead), 52 of them "subscribe", 53 – "active".Jan 15 10:20
XRevan86(Pleroma detector – huburi LIKE '%/push/hub/%')Jan 15 10:20
XRevan8643 of those 53 "active" ones are shitposter.clubJan 15 10:21
XRevan86Since shitposter.club currently uses an outdated version of Pleroma, I suspect a regression.Jan 15 10:22
XRevan86https://pleroma.site/api/statusnet/version.jsonJan 15 10:25
XRevan86"Pleroma 0.9.0" – 9 months old?Jan 15 10:25
XRevan86Hm, then not a regression, pleroma.liveunix.org and pleroma.es are "active", and they are branched from commits from 2 and 3 months respectively.Jan 15 10:27

DaemonFC[m]Smart cars = remote steering, breaks, throttleJan 18 19:13
DaemonFC[m]Kia says they have a recall for some cars that introduces a new limp mode that keeps your engine from exploding if it detects a problem condition. I'd rather have an engine that doesn't explode. I guess software is cheaper and just fix the ones where the problem condition happens that go into limp.Jan 18 19:13
oiaohmDaemonFC[m]: Not that simple.   We want higher and higher fuel effectiveness.Jan 18 20:02
oiaohmDaemonFC[m]: the closer you get to perfect Stoichiometric the closer you get to perfect explosive.Jan 18 20:04
oiaohmDaemonFC[m]: and perfect Stoichiometric is when you will get you best fuel effectiveness.Jan 18 20:04
MinceRthere's also a demand for lower emissions, which largely coincide with lower fuel consumptionJan 18 20:05
MinceRso government regulations drive less reliable and more dangerous carsJan 18 20:05
oiaohmMinceR: yep trade off.Jan 18 20:08
oiaohmWe cannot get lower fuel consumption and remain absolutely reliable with current technology.Jan 18 20:08
MinceRwe could have largely switched to electric if there was sufficient support for itJan 18 20:10
oiaohmMinceR: its not just government regulation either.  People will buy one car over another just to get lower fuel consume.Jan 18 20:10
MinceRnot just denial and resistanceJan 18 20:10
MinceRand carbon taxesJan 18 20:10
oiaohmElectric is not exactly perfect either.Jan 18 20:11
MinceRoiaohm: i will buy one car over another just to get better reliabilityJan 18 20:11
MinceRit's not perfect, but it fits the emission reduction goal far betterJan 18 20:11
oiaohmThere is emission costs to making the electric.Jan 18 20:11
oiaohmAlso the electric problem is also recharage time.Jan 18 20:14
MinceRrecharge time could have been solved with a network of battery pack replacement stations with standardized battery pack formatJan 18 20:15
MinceRif they wanted to, that isJan 18 20:15
oiaohmMinceR: bad news that was tried a long time back in prototype with van.Jan 18 20:16
oiaohmIt did not in fact work out too well.Jan 18 20:17
MinceRwhy?Jan 18 20:17
oiaohmYou are forgetting a fully charged battery is like playing with a block of explosive.Jan 18 20:18
MinceRthere are safer batteriesJan 18 20:18
MinceRlower energy density, but also lower costsJan 18 20:18
oiaohmYou need to keep weight to power volume down for range.Jan 18 20:19
oiaohmOpps keep weight down and power volume up for range.Jan 18 20:19
MinceRalso, mandating particulate filters pretty much only makes the particulates even worseJan 18 20:19
oiaohmThis push you in the direction of battery that are either explosive themselves or can do explosive arcing.Jan 18 20:19
MinceRaside from damaging cars that aren't driven on highways, of courseJan 18 20:19
MinceRthere are many cases when range is not that much of an issue, as long as you have proper support for rechargingJan 18 20:20
oiaohmPlaces like Australia were you need 300-600km range is a problem and a half.Jan 18 20:20
oiaohmSwapping large car size battery packs with them charged is playing with quite a dangerous item.Jan 18 20:21
oiaohmThis is where hybrids do fit in you avoid having to replace the battery pack and get the extend range.Jan 18 20:22
oiaohmOr if we could work out how to have fuel cells/fuel batteries good enough.Jan 18 20:22
oiaohmMinceR: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modec the Modec electrics do the removable swapable battery.   But they are fairly much as large as you can go and do it safely.Jan 18 20:25
-TechrightsBot-tr/#techrights-en.wikipedia.org | Modec - WikipediaJan 18 20:25
oiaohmt has a 100-mile (160 km) range and a 50 mph (80 km/h) top speed. << That basically the upper limit of the swapable battery path.Jan 18 20:25
oiaohmFor general in city driving this is good enough.Jan 18 20:26
MinceRnice. has any government supported these?Jan 18 20:27
oiaohmUnfortunately no.Jan 18 20:27
oiaohmBut the did work what max safe size for swappable batteries is.Jan 18 20:28
MinceRof courseJan 18 20:28
MinceRit would have taken more interest and more mental effort than just extra taxesJan 18 20:28
oiaohmLike for stuff you are need 100km/h or faster you cannot do safely with swapable batteries.   You are needing too much in amps/volts to be safe.Jan 18 20:28
MinceRthen again, the people are irredeemably stupid too -- coal rollers, supporters of Cheeto Hitler and the likeJan 18 20:29
MinceRwhat if you have multiple battery units that can be swapped individually?Jan 18 20:29
oiaohmMinceR: they tried that.   You need to be able to bridge up enough amp/voltages to provide enough torque to get there.Jan 18 20:31
MinceRsure, and it can be done with wiresJan 18 20:31
oiaohmMultiple battery packs  leak to more risk of large miss balance.Jan 18 20:31
oiaohmlarge miss balance results in nasty volatage moving between the packs.  So frying the living heck out of even the thickest wiring.Jan 18 20:32
oiaohmYou know you have a savage problem when 4 inch square coper bar is vaporising.Jan 18 20:33
MinceRthey can still be replaced togetherJan 18 20:35
MinceRjust physically moved separatelyJan 18 20:35
MinceRand they can be balanced at the charging station, as the battery banks of Priuses areJan 18 20:35
oiaohmIts when you join all the banks up and get to that massive capactity that you need to run a high speed electric does everything go wrong.Jan 18 20:40
oiaohmMinceR: there is a possible solution.Jan 18 20:40

-TechrightsBot-tr/#techrights-www.maketecheasier.com | Nginx vs Apache: Which Serves You Best in 2019? - Make Tech EasierJan 19 12:38
XRevan86Ugh, what a terrible article.Jan 19 12:38
XRevan86It benchmarks nginx and Apache httpd through… two random websites.Jan 19 12:38
XRevan86It points out .htaccess, that nginx doesn't support it, not mentioning *why* nginx doesn't support it – because it's a performance overhead.Jan 19 12:41
XRevan86> in general, use of .htaccess files should be avoided when possibleJan 19 12:41

XRevan86But I do suspect that it's still threading to the death.Jan 19 12:44

XRevan86oiaohm: They do mention explicitly that it should not be used unlessJan 19 13:59
XRevan86> You should avoid using .htaccess files completely if you have access to httpd main server config file. Using .htaccess files slows down your Apache http server. Any directive that you can include in a .htaccess file is better set in a Directory block, as it will have the same effect with better performance.Jan 19 13:59
XRevan86I guess they are unwilling to screw those who rely on it by removing it completely.Jan 19 14:01
XRevan86> Flexibility: A web server should be flexible enough to allow customizations. Apache does it quite well using .htaccess tools, which Nginx does not support. <..> Apache wins this round.Jan 19 14:05
XRevan86But the article has another perspective %)Jan 19 14:05
XRevan86And nginx has modules too, albeit most are linked-in, which isn't that flexible.Jan 19 14:06
oiaohmXRevan86: php programs will ship with set .htaaccess stuff.    Having some processing that would read the .htaaccess files and make apache/nginx configuration files would be way of killing this off.Jan 19 14:07
XRevan86oiaohm: Ah, indeed.Jan 19 14:08

oiaohmXRevan86: I was more thinking this should be tool that comes with the http/https servers.Jan 19 14:13
oiaohmLike if it came with apache after awhile they could simple disable .htaccess processing at runtime.   Jan 19 14:13
oiaohmCould have htaaccess checked for changes on start up and converted.Jan 19 14:14
oiaohmIf there are differences.Jan 19 14:14
oiaohmThis would kill off the performance problem while keeping the legacy support.Jan 19 14:14
XRevan86Hm, how do they check for .htaccess BTW?Jan 19 14:14
XRevan86this reminds me that there's such a simple efficient thing as… inodesJan 19 14:15
