cubexyz | also add laserprinter to the list of things Xerox invented | May 06 16:39 |
oiaohm | schestowitz: Its a funny one of academics. You have two forms. One is a honorary degree that is basically wall art. There is a second Recognition Prior Learning Honorary degree this is a interesting one. | May 06 16:48 |
oiaohm | schestowitz: how do you get people with Doctorates to teach a new field. | May 06 16:49 |
schestowitz | maybe the concept of such degrees was originally OK | May 06 16:49 |
schestowitz | But it no longer us | May 06 16:49 |
oiaohm | Recognition Prior Learning Honorary degree this one you can in fact have the right to use the title doctor. | May 06 16:50 |
schestowitz | some unis here sent my uncle (now dead) offers of honrary degrees | May 06 16:50 |
schestowitz | he turned them down, they were baseless, he did nothing for these. Those are like scams. | May 06 16:50 |
oiaohm | The wall paper ones are basically scams. | May 06 16:50 |
schestowitz | yeah | May 06 16:51 |
schestowitz | you maybe give a speech to get them | May 06 16:51 |
schestowitz | faking prestige | May 06 16:51 |
oiaohm | RPL(for Recognition Prior learning) are a different thing. | May 06 16:51 |
oiaohm | Yet they both have Honorary because you got them without having to sit exam. | May 06 16:51 |
oiaohm | RPL ones they have to documented your work to justify the grant that why you get the title. | May 06 16:52 |
oiaohm | With Stallman and all the open source he put out there it would be possible that he could have got a RPL version. | May 06 16:52 |
oiaohm | I really wish RPL degrees had left the word Honorary out completely. It only causes confusion and problems. | May 06 16:53 |
oiaohm | I have enough of qualifications I have that I never sat a single exam or attend a single day in class that I got just from documented RPL. | May 06 16:54 |
oiaohm | There are very few people would would have enough public documented work to RPL a Dr in anything. | May 06 16:55 |
oiaohm | schestowitz: https://eprints.qut.edu.au/14543/1/14543a.pdf I forgot in Australia we have another term for it. degree of 'PhD' by Published Papers. If you get you PhD that way it real and equal to the person who spent years at uni. | May 06 17:00 |
oiaohm | Please note the degree presentation for a person who gets a PHD by Published Papers is still a Honorary degree. Yes you have the wall real one up on wall and no presentation by the Published Papers/RPL route. | May 06 17:03 |
schestowitz | it's disgracing people who actually worked for one | May 06 17:03 |
schestowitz | I spent a lot of time and effort on mine | May 06 17:04 |
oiaohm | Getting in by Published Papers is not simple ether. You normally have to made 3 to 4 times the number of documents as a person doing the course has to. | May 06 17:04 |
oiaohm | The difference with the Published Papers route is not the work required to get the degree. Its the fact you can collected what you need while working for employer. Not doing theory uni stuff doing real world practical stuff. | May 06 17:07 |
oiaohm | Money wises you can be way better off the Published Paper route. | May 06 17:08 |

oiaohm | MinceR: with Honorary degrees. In most cases you have to pay for them. If you are famous you have to attend a dinner or something and they sell the seats at your table. | May 06 17:17 |
MinceR | ic | May 06 17:17 |
oiaohm | Published paper route you have to pay for processing that is normally less than what you have to pay with Honorary degrees or what they will scrap back out of the seats at the table. | May 06 17:18 |
oiaohm | Basically one huge mother rip off. | May 06 17:18 |
oiaohm | Of course why with the published paper route you might end up paying for Honorary degree is to get to rub shoulders with the recruiters that attend uni events. | May 06 17:19 |

DaemonFC[m] | While Chase is banksplaining to people that are being ripped off by criminal Wall Street banks that they're broke because they aren't making enough coffee at home, it belies the real problems. Things like Chase Bank and the drug companies themselves. | May 11 17:42 |
MinceR | lol | May 11 17:43 |
XRevan86 | DaemonFC[m]: Context? | May 11 17:46 |
DaemonFC[m] | XRevan86: Of what? Chase? They put on their Twitter that people are broke because they're going out for coffee too much and aren't "eating the food that's already in the fridge". | May 11 17:48 |
DaemonFC[m] | Couldn't possibly be the fees, interest, and fines from the bank on their deposit accounts, credit cards, mortgages, and auto loans. | May 11 17:48 |
DaemonFC[m] | Yeah, my budget is pretty tight. I'm not going out for coffee. I buy coffee in big cans at Aldi and carefully arrange things so that my auto drip makes precisely what I drink each morning. | May 11 17:49 |
DaemonFC[m] | I'm one of those people that dials things in like that and tries to run a tight ship. | May 11 17:49 |
DaemonFC[m] | And, yeah, I do have a more expensive auto-drip, but it was worth it because instead of running on the electric to keep a burner on, it's insulated well enough to keep the coffee steaming hot for 2.5 hours without using more electricity. | May 11 17:50 |
DaemonFC[m] | I'm the kind of person who figures out exactly how much laundry soap is "enough" and stops there while everyone else is filling the entire cap full and then dumping in twice what they need to do the clothes. | May 11 17:51 |
DaemonFC[m] | I wasn't satisfied with the performance of Aldi's dishwasher detergent, so I buy the name brand at the store, but I stretch it by filling the pre-wash cup with the Aldi stuff. | May 11 17:52 |
DaemonFC[m] | I buy groceries at Aldi and stock up on (generic) personal care items at Walmart in quantities sufficient to keep me out of the store for a while. | May 11 17:53 |
DaemonFC[m] | I found that I was using too many personal care items. Deodorant is almost never necessary and mouthwash is just floor cleaner that they started marketing to people years ago by shaming them into thinking the had a made up condition called "halitosis". | May 11 17:54 |
DaemonFC[m] | So I don't use mouth wash and I don't use deodorant unless I'm going to be sweating a lot. So, maybe 20-30 days out of the entire year. | May 11 17:55 |
