schestowitzShould we have known better? Of course. Google has such a long history of closing down projects that there are even sites dedicated to listing all the failures, like Google Cemetery. But the closure emphasizes the obvious: corporations are not on the side of their user-bases.Apr 09 04:21
schestowitzNor is this reminder applicable only to social media forums. It applies even more so to cloud applications and services like Google Docs and online storage. Providers’ claims to be secure have to be taken on trust without the least bit of evidence. Even worse, often both the terms of service and the services themselves are subject to unilateral changes by the providers.Apr 09 04:21
schestowitzLinux users of Dropbox had a minor example of this basic truth in 2018, when the company announced it would only support ext4 filesystems. The fact that ext4 is probably the most commonly used filesystem in Linux does not make the change any less arbitrary.Apr 09 04:21
schestowitzOnline services often out-compete FOSS ones. Both offer free services, but the online services are often better known and offer easier interfaces. If convenience were the only criterion, who wouldn’t prefer Google+ to Mastodon?Apr 09 04:21

OneYour input for our future strategic plan  Dear Colleagues,  This afternoon, Willis Towers Watson (WTW) presented the findings of the Office-wide staff engagement survey "Your voice, our future" to all staff (available here).  The first thing I would like to do is to thank all of you for participating. An 85% participation rate has given Willis Towers Watson a sizeable and credible set of data to analyse, and on which to base their Apr 09 21:24
OneMoving forwards, we must act upon the findings. Given the Office-wide nature of these results, the responsibility to rectify any shortcomings falls to all of us and everyone will now play their part in improving staff engagement - on the basis of shared responsibility. As one organisation, we will take shared ownership of this report, assess the findings with our colleagues and work together to collectively address the issues that Apr 09 21:24
OneAs a next step, you will have the opportunity to discuss the results with your managers. They will be given access to your unit results report during the course of this month, after the DG discussions on the results and will be in a position to evaluate specific results with you.Apr 09 21:25
OneWith a good understanding of the results, our Office will take a number of actions together to respond to the issues identified in the survey.  Firstly, we will examine how we can address the findings of the survey in the Strategic Plan. The findings have arrived on time and with clear recommendations, so we are in a good position to evaluate possible measures that could be incorporated into the forthcoming Strategic Plan to achievApr 09 21:25
OneIn addition, we will use focus groups to evaluate the survey results and to help us draw up an action plan with specific measures to improve staff engagement. The focus groups will help us to address certain issues which are either particularly pressing, are deemed to need special attention or which can supplement other actions foreseen in the Strategic Plan.Apr 09 21:25
OneLastly, we will ensure effective follow-up and monitoring. The survey identified that only a small proportion of staff felt that the Office does enough to get the opinions of its staff. We will therefore commit to holding another strategic staff engagement survey by no later than 2022. The overall score on staff engagement will also be added to the Balanced Scorecard.Apr 09 21:26
OneAs a last word, I would like to encourage you all to be as proactive as possible in assessing the results with your colleagues and managers. The survey and the responses from our staff have provided us with a much clearer understanding of the areas in which we need to make further effort. I am convinced that this survey - and our response to it - will help us to build the engaged, knowledgeable and collaborative organisation we aspApr 09 21:26

schestowitzAs of this writing, nine years have passed since this article was originally published. Mr. Hovsepian left Novell less than a year later. Unfortunately for him, his reputation continues to suffer due to the negative portrayal of who you perceived him to be nearly a decade ago.Apr 11 19:28
schestowitz Apr 11 19:28
schestowitzThe image that grafts the lower half of Steve Ballmer’s face onto Mr. Hovsepian’s head is not especially helpful, but in a more significant objection, my client also maintains that contrary to what your piece reports, no SUSE employees had been terminated at the time the article was posted online.Apr 11 19:28

XRevan86MinceR: Water literally cannot not exist, unless the universe doesn't exist either (and a dystopia has to be placed somewhere)Apr 14 20:04

MinceRfor example, if all the oxygen nuclei decomposedApr 14 20:05
MinceRor were fusedApr 14 20:05
MinceRalso, the article would claim it's no longer present on earthApr 14 20:06

MinceRunless of course all black holes already evaporatedApr 14 20:06

kaniini"Microsoft harasses other Linux ecosystem participants with software patent litigation." is fineApr 14 20:06
MinceRi'm sure the crybullies at microsoft will reframe it as an attack on particular peopleApr 14 20:06
MinceRjust as viktor orban reframes all criticism of how he fuck up hungary as an attack against "the hungarian people"Apr 14 20:07
kaniini"$person is bad because they work for Microsoft, who attack other participants with software patent litigation." is notApr 14 20:07
