amarsh04schestowitz have found that kind of situation with concerts using e-tickets in Japan, some deliberately try to be inclusive (Tixeebox needs at least an android or apple smartphone), but the concert promoters can do things like verification against a Japanese telephone number and non-residents can't have a Japanese mobile numberApr 29 14:11
amarsh04I was able to get a travel agent to do the verification for me, but unless the promoters deliberately try to be inclusive they discriminate against people without smartphones / non residents ...Apr 29 14:13
oiaohmamarsh04: I like the theory that non-residents cannot have a Japanese mobile number.    Its more that the japanese anti scapling laws apply to residents.Apr 29 14:17
oiaohmamarsh04: so if you have to use a local agent you cannot be scapling.Apr 29 14:17
oiaohmamarsh04: one of my friends has a girl friend who is Japanese.   He does have a japanese mobile number even that he is not resident.    Required to sign stack of paperwork in japan and home country so that if he does a crime with said japan phone he is to go to japan without question and answer japan courts. Apr 29 14:20
oiaohmBasically you don't need to be a resident to have a japan phone number.   But you have to agree to obey japan laws using it and face their courts.   If he did not need for business he would not have done it.Apr 29 14:21

oiaohmMinceR: you have to remember the term smartphone was defined in 1992 when all the software could be write into a once write rom.Apr 29 14:40
oiaohmSmartphone by term does not have to mean you can upgrade the bugger or install third party software.Apr 29 14:40

oiaohmMinceR: and those were still called smartphones.Apr 29 14:52
oiaohmThe term smartphone does in fact mandate that you can run third party applications.   It mandates features more than you find in a general feature phone.Apr 29 14:53

MinceR"crApple can't put anything other than a touchscreen into a mobile phone and my butt would hurt if i didn't get to call the hypePhone a smartphone, therefore i decided that a touchscreen is sufficient for a phone to be a smartphone"Apr 29 15:06
oiaohmThe problem was the split between feature phone and smart phone is really mud.    Smart phones bigger processor and ram than feature phones that another difference.    Running third party applications is not a difference.   Being locked or not locked to third party applications store is not a difference either.Apr 29 15:09
-viera/#techrights-Tux Machines: today's howtos http://www.tuxmachines.org/node/123327 [https://pleroma.site/objects/ce8bc835-3891-499c-951b-121d3302dc4f]Apr 29 15:10
oiaohmAgain how much bigger processor and ram makes something a smartphone to a feature phone is another thing that can basically get into debate.Apr 29 15:10
oiaohmI really hope one day we can have a term meaning decent phone.   That is able to be upgraded by your or the maker due to being true foss software.Apr 29 15:12
MinceRfunny thing, hypePhones also suck specwiseApr 29 15:12
---MinceR gives voice to mmu_man scientesApr 29 15:12
MinceRand they're also smaller than the smartphones of the same generationApr 29 15:13
oiaohmThat a iphone is called a smartphone does not mean it a good phone because the define of smartphone you can get away with a mega crap device and call it smartphone.Apr 29 15:13
oiaohmLike you see so called android smartphone watches with insanely small touch screens.Apr 29 15:13
MinceRthe whole point of a smartphone is the extra functionality afforded by the open platform and the filesystem shared by its applicationsApr 29 15:13
MinceRletting you do some actual work on files, not just on the webApr 29 15:13
MinceRhypeOS allows none of this, unless it's jailbrokenApr 29 15:14
oiaohmNot all the early smartphones where open platform early blackberry you had to by sdk.Apr 29 15:14

oiaohmThis is my problem smartphone does not mean what we want it to mean.Apr 29 15:14

MinceR(like they fuck everything else up)Apr 29 15:15
oiaohmPlease note blackberry the first item release with the term smartphone was not that open.Apr 29 15:16
oiaohmOpen platform was not part of the early smartphone define.Apr 29 15:16
MinceRthe first blackberry came out in 1999Apr 29 15:16
MinceRthat was a late comerApr 29 15:16
MinceRthe term was coined in 1995Apr 29 15:16
oiaohmCoined yet defines not directly released with the term.Apr 29 15:17
MinceRand the first blackberry was a two-way pagerApr 29 15:17
MinceRnot even a phoneApr 29 15:17
oiaohmeven when the smartphone term was made there was horrible debate if x or y devices should be smartphones or just advanced feature phones.Apr 29 15:18
MinceRand if there's a debate, you get rid of your standardsApr 29 15:18
oiaohmExactly Apr 29 15:18
oiaohmbasically it broken down.   Define was not clear enough.Apr 29 15:18
MinceRor people were trying to cut cornersApr 29 15:19
MinceRcall it a smartphone but not give the user what that impliesApr 29 15:19
oiaohmThat why you need a really solid clear define.Apr 29 15:19
oiaohmThat cannot be debated.Apr 29 15:19
MinceRinstead force them into your little walled garden so you don't have to compete with competent software developersApr 29 15:19
MinceRthe apple way.Apr 29 15:19
MinceRalso tax them 30% for every saleApr 29 15:20
oiaohmNokia and other makers on advanced feature phone/early possible smartphones started messing with the walled garden app stores.Apr 29 15:20
oiaohmBefore apple Apr 29 15:20
MinceRnokia didn't do thatApr 29 15:20
oiaohmMind you apple takes a way bigger cut than any of those.Apr 29 15:20
MinceRthey merely fucked with application signingApr 29 15:21
MinceRafaik only a few APIs (such as DRM) were locked behind their approvalApr 29 15:21
oiaohmNokia was charging for signing.Apr 29 15:21
MinceRand there were several symbian releases before mandatory app signingApr 29 15:21
oiaohmAs I said light cost.Apr 29 15:21
oiaohmNot Apples 30% bullshit charge.Apr 29 15:21
MinceRthere was also a way to sign with a self-signed certificate, which they did not charge forApr 29 15:21
MinceRit just locked you out of a few APIsApr 29 15:21
oiaohmAgain locked out of those API was walled garden early experments.Apr 29 15:22
oiaohmWill you pay for API access or will you not.Apr 29 15:22
MinceRindeed, and microsoft and google are experimenting with that againApr 29 15:23
MinceRwith microsoft, it's UWP, with google, it's google playApr 29 15:23
MinceRapple has probably killed the smartphone and the general purpose computer by making closed platforms popularApr 29 15:26
MinceRwe're seeing their death throesApr 29 15:26
MinceRi wonder how they expect to develop software for their appliances once no computers suitable for that purpose are manufactured anymore, thoughApr 29 15:27
oiaohmWe are starting to see the rise of FOSS silicon and other things.Apr 29 15:28
MinceRi wonder if the powers that be will allow thatApr 29 15:29
oiaohmReality is Apple with iphone really just pushed to extreams to what was already happening with smartphones.Apr 29 15:29

oiaohmI don't excuse apple for what they did.Apr 29 15:33
oiaohmBut the problem I have its not going to be only apple who looks at it and says cool we can go extream and profit.Apr 29 15:33
oiaohmReason why I want some correctly define term for phones that basically says no walled garden.Apr 29 15:34
oiaohmTo be correct no walled garden and upgradeable as long as user wishes.Apr 29 15:35
MinceRaccording to GSM Arena, the Ericsson R380 had a "Big" screen. so informative! so precise!Apr 29 15:36

MinceRit's a specs siteApr 29 15:37
oiaohmThat can be what was written on the Ericssons spec sheet as well.Apr 29 15:38
oiaohmThey did not include physical sizes of screen all the time.  Small, medium, large, big. Apr 29 15:39

mp_en_viajeschestowitz, well obviously, profit miscalculated (such as by externalizing internalities) is just a joke. a teenager could run a "profitable" 2nd hand shop by cutting school and selling his mother's wardrobe while the parents are at work. this is profit only from the particularly braindamaged pov of adolescents.Apr 30 11:24
