      • [Older] The Year of the Linux Desktop - by Matt Hartley

One of my biggest grievances with the current state of Linux journalism is the sheer volume of puff pieces passed off as quality content. I'll be among the first to admit there are some decent technology writers still puttering around. Yet despite years of experience in the tech space, far too many of them fall victim to the deadly writing assignment "Year of the Linux Desktop" type articles.

Editors often assign puff piece articles with one laser focused thought in their tiny little brains - eyeballs on the article in question. These editorial minions of mediocrity have no interest in furthering the adoption of Linux on the desktop. They simply wish to make their monthly readership quotas so they can assign additional puff pieces to a willing batch of wet behind-the-ear tech writers.

And this brings us to the hottest Linux topic next to a new Ubuntu release announcement - The Year of the Linux Desktop. (Insert dramatic music here…or something)

The concept of this topic is nothing new. It's been recycled off and on for years by countless publications. In 2017, Linux enthusiasts were told by a well known presenter for the Linux Foundation that this would be the year of the Linux desktop. Well, perhaps not exactly.

      • [Older] 9 great reasons why I need to write this article about switching to Linux

I don't believe it's any secret that PCWorld is laser-focused on topics they can cultivate into advertising dollars. I get it. We all have to eat. PCWorld's focus is illustrated with its emphasis on hardware, mobile devices, and proprietary software. All of which is perfectly reasonable.

For this edition of the blog, we’re hopping off the usual tracks and onto a different set entirely: Vulkan driver optimization. I can already hear what you’re thinking.

Vulkan drivers are already fast. Go back to doing something useful, like making GL work.

        First: no they’re not.

Second: I’m doing the opposite of that.

Third: shut up, it’s my blog.

How does one optimize Vulkan drivers? As we all know, any great optimization needs a test case. In the case of Vulkan, everyone who’s anyone (me) uses Zink as their test case. The reasons for this are many and varied because I say they are, but the important one to keep in mind is, as always, drawoverhead.

      • H2S MediaHow to install Thunderbird on Debian 11 Bullseye - Linux Shout

Thunderbird is Mozilla’s developed open-source email client available for Windows, macOS, Linux, and other popular operating systems. The secure and free e-mail client “Mozilla Thunderbird” supports all common e-mail accounts, can encrypt outgoing messages on request, offers an integrated RSS reader, and is highly expandable. If you want, you can even use Thunderbird as a Twitter client.

The Mozilla e-mail client is easy to use and offers a tabs view, so you can, for example, cleanly separate emails from chats. By clicking “Compose” you can write new emails and add appointments and addresses optionally. For large mail stocks, there are practical tools for a better overview. So you can highlight important messages, hide read ones, or sort the mail into different folders. Very cool are the virtual folders, where you can automatically sort mails with certain criteria.

      • Trend OceansUncover: Quickly Discover Exposed Hosts on the Internet from Linux - TREND OCEANS

Recently, I’ve written a detailed guide on the Smap alternative to Nmap that takes advantage of the Shodan API to generate identical output like Nmap, except it also fetches open port data from Shodan as an add-on to standard Nmap.

No doubt, Shodan is an amazing way to find devices connected to the internet. However, it is not the only search engine. There are several platforms like Censys and Fofa that offer you the chance to check if the device is connected to the internet.

If you have a list of IP addresses and check it on Shodan (to know whether they are exposed to the internet), in a very rare situation, you might not see any result declaring that they are not exposed. You leave that situation for further investigation. However, it is recommended to check IP addresses on multiple platforms to verify that they are 100% not exposed to the internet from anywhere.

To achieve this, you can take the help of various tools that help you perform all search engine searches from one tool without letting you manually visit each search engine for testing.

Of all those tools, one is the Uncover tool, which can give you the power to perform tests on hosts to check whether they are exposed to the internet.

      • Trend OceansSubfinder: Fast Passive Subdomain Enumeration Tool in Linux - TREND OCEANS

Today, most of the vulnerability or exploitation is done over the subdomains of a website where developers have less interest, which gives an attacker an open invitation to exploit their main website.

In some cases, the developer doesn’t even know which subdomain was created. From a security point of view, if you are doing security research, then it is your responsibility to know how to get a list of subdomains of the root domain.

Now, there are multiple ways to find a subdomain. For example, if you are a site admin and have access to a DNS record, then you can easily view the list of registered subdomains. In case you are not a site admin and just a security researcher looking for a subdomain of the root site to check a security flaw, then you should take the help of the subfinder tool.

      • Linux CapableHow to Install Linux Kernel 6.0 on Fedora 36 Linux

The Linux Kernel 6.0 brings many new features and improvements, making it one of the most significant releases in recent years. One of the most anticipated features is support for the latest AMD “Zen” CPU architecture, which promises substantial performance gains for users with this CPU. With these and other improvements, including the early phase of rust code, virtualization improvements, GPU driver support, scheduler changes, and much more, the Linux Kernel 6.0 will significantly boost your system’s overall performance.

Most users may not be required to update to Linux Kernel 6.0 immediately, but for users seeking better performance on existing hardware or having new hardware that their current kernel does not support or has relatively low support, then upgrading immediately would be beneficial. If your system is running fine and you are happy, do not pre-upgrade your kernel and wait for the official release in Fedora; I would advise you to keep the current kernel, given Fedora’s schedule of releases.

In the following tutorial, you will learn how to install Linux Kernel 6.0 on Fedora 36 Server or Workstation using the Linux Vanilla third-party repository that is well known or using Fedora’s upstream, along with how to downgrade back to the original Fedora kernel if you run into issues.

This beginner’s guide helps you remotely connect to Ubuntu 20.04 from Windows 10. We show you the easy steps with an example.

If you work in a networked environment at your work or set up a small network at home (wired or wireless), you are often required to remote connect to your Ubuntu machine (or any Linux machine).

Although I have created this guide in Ubuntu 20.04 and Windows 10, the following steps ideally should work for any Linux distribution which supports Xrdp for remote connection.

Technically, there are many ways of connecting to any system over the network (internet or intranet). You can use a client such as Remmina (which is an excellent client) to connect via VNC, and RDP protocol. You can even connect via ssh with X forwarding as well.

We're in the middle of updating our template to improve it a little bit, but there are no substantive changes. The most important section is building the governance section 6, for which the template has various suggested structures.

We'd like to have a meeting where anyone can join and ask questions about the agreement or anything else about joining SFC. We'll be hosting 3 calls to let community members join when is best for them: 15:00 UTC Friday, 18:00 UTC Saturday and 17:00 UTC Monday on BigBlueButton. We'll post the links to this mailing list right before the calls.

Just for clarity since we heard about some confusion in backchannel: SFC is offering membership to the Sourceware hosting project itself, not to the guest projects that receive services *from* Sourceware. We are completely aware that, for example, the various GNU projects that receive services from Sourceware already have a fiscal sponsor — i.e., the FSF. We are not seeking to take those projects from the FSF, rather, to offer SFC's services to the Sourceware hosting platform itself.

We're glad to answer questions on this and anything else related at these sessions!

There's an interesting observation to make here, though, and this is that courts are ordering Internet censorship — an extremely grave reduction in liberty, normally unthinkable outside of wartime — for one "crime", and one "crime" only: the free sharing of knowledge and culture, which must apparently be stopped at any cost.

This is a measure so extreme, it's not used for genocide, premeditated murder, or anything else in the crime catalog. There is but one "crime" that is so horrendous, such a grave crime against the whole of humanity, that it merits Internet censorship as ordered by would-be respectable judges:

The free sharing of scientific knowledge or popular culture. This is apparently the worst, and only, conceivable crime that merits this worst of prevention.

        • [Old] AAASWho's downloading pirated papers? Everyone

How many Sci-Hub users are there? The download requests came from 3 million unique IP addresses, which provides a lower bound. But the true number is much higher because thousands of people on a university campus can share the same IP address. Sci-Hub downloaders live on every continent except Antarctica. Of the 24,000 city locations to which they cluster, the busiest is Tehran, with 1.27 million requests. Much of that is from Iranians using programs to automatically download huge swaths of Sci-Hub's papers to make a local mirror of the site, Elbakyan says. Rahimi, the engineering student in Tehran, confirms this. “There are several Persian sites similar to Sci-Hub,” he says. “So you should consider Iranian illegal [paper] downloads to be five to six times higher” than what Sci-Hub alone reveals.

The geography of Sci-Hub usage generally looks like a map of scientific productivity, but with some of the richer and poorer science-focused nations flipped. The smaller countries have stories of their own. Someone in Nuuk, Greenland, is reading a paper about how best to provide cancer treatment to indigenous populations. Research goes on in Libya, even as a civil war rages there. Someone in Benghazi is investigating a method for transmitting data between computers across an air gap. Far to the south in the oil-rich desert, someone near the town of Sabhā is delving into fluid dynamics. (Go to bit.ly/Sci-Hub for an interactive map of the website's data and see what people are reading in cities worldwide.) Mapping IP addresses to real-world locations can paint a false picture if people hide behind web proxies or anonymous routing services. But according to Elbakyan, fewer than 3% of Sci-Hub users are using those.

The Biden administration has pointed, with alarm, to the national security implications of both cybersecurity and cryptocurrency. It’s just a matter of time before the government begins worrying about their intersection—cryptocurrency security. There’s nothing more natural for North Korean state hackers, Russian organized crime, or partially privatized cyberspies in China and Iran than to steal cryptocurrency to finance their national security operations. They’ll find an open door; because, as bad as overall cybersecurity is, the security of cryptocurrency is worse.

        • TechRepublicThe rise of Linux malware: 9 tips for securing the OSS

Linux is the most secure operating system on the market; for years, that has been one of the open source platform’s best selling points. However, as with anything regarding technology, it’s only a matter of time before criminals catch up. This has been the case with every operating system, software and service. At this point, to say Linux is immune to malicious software would be a fallacy.

The sad truth is if it’s connected to a network, it’s vulnerable. It doesn’t matter what operating system you use — the longer it’s in play, the more likely it will become a target. And Linux is no exception.

Over the past few years, Linux has had a target drawn on its back. Given how enterprise businesses now live and die by open source technology, including the Linux OS, it should come as no surprise that this has become a reality, and it’s not going to go away. In fact, if I had to guess, I’d say that the rise of malicious software targeting Linux deployments will become staggering over the next decade.

The fires are intentional to clear land for development, as armed men in combat boots crunch across smoldering ashes whilst hunting down/killing obstructionist environmentalists.

Insurance is a key safety net of western modern life, and many take the insurance of property for granted. House and contents insurance, it is envisaged, will be there if disaster strikes. However, a lack of meaningful action to mitigate climate change is putting this sense of security at risk. For households, there is growing uncertainty about what the future may hold. There are examples, worldwide, of insurers withdrawing from certain markets and households being less and less likely to be able to access or afford property insurance.€

Those costs don’t include the charges from cemeteries, which can add thousands more. ProPublica recently investigated one cemetery whose charges could run into the tens of thousands of dollars.

Channel 4 News in the UK understands the global repercussions, that the Brazilian election “will determine the future of the Amazon rainforest, and the world’s fight against climate change”. The fight against climate change means protecting the world’s rainforests, respecting their Indigenous custodians, learning from Indigenous knowledge, applying serious initiatives like the Green State Vision which was launched by West Papua’s independence leaders at COP26, where it was ignored. It means ceasing all other forms of extractive plunder now, understanding that the planet’s future depends on this. • The AnarcatComplaint about Canada's phone cartel - anarcat

I think it's absolutely scandalous that telecommunications providers in Canada can charge so much money, especially since the most prohibitive fee (the "non-prepaid" plans) are automatically charged if I happen to forget to remove my sim card or put my phone in "airplane mode".

As advised, I have called customer service at Fido for advice on how to handle this situation. They have confirmed those are the only plans available for travelers and could not accommodate me otherwise. I have notified them I was in the process of filing this complaint.

I believe that Canada has become the technological dunce of the world, and I blame the CRTC for its lack of regulation in that matter. You should not allow those companies to grow into such a cartel that they can do such price-fixing as they wish.
