One of my biggest grievances with the current state of Linux journalism is the sheer volume of puff pieces passed off as quality content. I'll be among the first to admit there are some decent technology writers still puttering around. Yet despite years of experience in the tech space, far too many of them fall victim to the deadly writing assignment "Year of the Linux Desktop" type articles.
Editors often assign puff piece articles with one laser focused thought in their tiny little brains - eyeballs on the article in question. These editorial minions of mediocrity have no interest in furthering the adoption of Linux on the desktop. They simply wish to make their monthly readership quotas so they can assign additional puff pieces to a willing batch of wet behind-the-ear tech writers.
And this brings us to the hottest Linux topic next to a new Ubuntu release announcement - The Year of the Linux Desktop. (Insert dramatic music here…or something)
The concept of this topic is nothing new. It's been recycled off and on for years by countless publications. In 2017, Linux enthusiasts were told by a well known presenter for the Linux Foundation that this would be the year of the Linux desktop. Well, perhaps not exactly.

If you work in a networked environment at your work or set up a small network at home (wired or wireless), you are often required to remote connect to your Ubuntu machine (or any Linux machine).
Although I have created this guide in Ubuntu 20.04 and Windows 10, the following steps ideally should work for any Linux distribution which supports Xrdp for remote connection.

The Excavation of Hob's Barrow is an upcoming folk horror narrative-driven point and click adventure, with a really great mixture of animated pixel-art and Native Linux support. Coming from Cloak and Dagger Games and Wadjet Eye Games, nice to see more fully supported games like this.
Here's an update I missed recently somehow. Bottles, the application you can use for managing various Windows games and apps installed with Wine had a fresh update with a fancy new Library Mode. Where do these developers find the time to constantly improve Bottles? Amazing.
The devs behind the now famous Bottles have recently shared with everyone the recording of their talk at the Linux App Summit, an event co-sponsorted by GNOME and KDE. Bottles is a piece of software that works on top of WINE to make it easy to create specific prefixes for various purposes, including running Windows games. It can definitely replace PlayonLinux and Lutris in many use cases.
The coding period is coming to an end in a few weeks, and this is the time for complete devotion towards making the activity ready to be merged. The visual representation of the activity is close to completion, and the working of a few parts is left. The implementation of the idea is improved significantly with the help of mentors. One thing I learned when implementing something in the code is that the activity should be “scalable” for the future. It should adapt to the requirements.
Leap Micro 5.3, which is a modern lightweight host operating system, is now available for beta testing on get.opensuse.org.
The beta version is only expected to be available on openSUSE’s website for a couple weeks before it quickly transitions to a release candidate.
Fedora 37, an upgrade to one of the best Linux distributions, is around the corner. It is due for release next month, as early as October 18, 2022, if all goes as planned.

My first full-time job was purely technical. Most of my interview centered around my abilities to manage and maintain Linux servers since the company had very limited Linux knowledge. Once I was hired, my main responsibility was maintaining a single Red Hat Linux 9 server. Yes. A single server. And no, not Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9. Red Hat Linux 9. (It was 2005.)
It’s always better to work smarter and not harder. Imagine that every time you need to receive some important data, you have to repeat certain tasks. You have to follow the same steps over and over and over. Each set of steps takes an hour to complete. Now multiply that set times 10. Who has that kind of time?
You can’t open a newsletter, website, or magazine in the past few weeks without seeing mention of “quiet quitting.” This terminology is misleading – it’s not representative of employees' actions. Boundary setting would be more apt; Work-life balance also fits. What these workers are experiencing is most definitely the cusp of burnout, exacerbated by two years of a stressful pandemic, an experimental year of hybrid work, and a reimagining of what their life should look like.
As Jason Feifer, editor in chief of Entrepreneur magazine, says, “We have a serious cultural problem, which is that as soon as we give something a new name, we treat it like it’s a new thing. There is a proposal for Fedora 39 to use DNF5 for software package management to improve performance and user experience.
One of the most important aspects of any Linux distribution is the tools we use to manage software. Of course, we’re talking about the command line tool we use to install, remove, and update the package base.
These tools significantly impact the overall user experience and perception of a particular Linux distro.
So, the APT tool is available for all Linux distros that use the DEB package format, such as Debian, Ubuntu, and Linux Mint. Correspondingly, it is DNF for RPM-based systems like Red Hat and Fedora.
Raspberry Pi UX engineer Simon Long announced the new release in a Raspberry Pi blog post. Long said that there wasn't much new in this version.
"This time around, it is mostly a wrapping-up of all the bug fixes and new versions of software which have been released since the previous image in April; but there are a few small tweaks to the user experience," Long said.

Canonical is known to release frequent updates for its most popular Linux distribution, Ubuntu. After Jammy Jellyfish, Canonical released Ubuntu 22.10 Kinetic Kudu as a short-term release.

More often than not, when organizations deploy applications across hybrid and multicloud environments, they use the open-source Kubernetes container orchestration system.
Kubernetes itself helps to schedule and manage distributed virtual compute resources and isn’t optimized by default for any one particular type of workload, that’s where projects like Kubeflow come into play.
For organizations looking to run machine learning (ML) in the cloud, a group of companies including Google, Red Hat and Cisco helped to found the Kubeflow open-source project in 2017. It took three years for the effort to reach the Kubeflow 1.0 release in March 2020, as the project gathered more supporters and users. Over the last two years, the project has continued to evolve, adding more capabilities to support the growing demands of ML.
The company will provide both Ubuntu 22.04 and Android 11 (with Linux 5.4) images for the board through their OOWOW system that conveniently allows the installation directly from their servers.
The company can also provide the AnyWAN Hardware Development Kit URX851 and AnyWAN Hardware Development Kit MxL25641 for earlier development, and the solutions can run Yocto-based prplOS (formerly known as prplWRT) and RDK-B, or MaxLinear UGW (Universal Gateway Software) based on OpenWrt. Since the AnyWAN processors are mostly designed for OEM and ODM manufacturers, there’s very little information available publicly.

Nearly all art functions in just a single direction by allowing the viewer to admire its beauty, creativity, and construction. But Estonian artist Tauno Erik has done something a bit different thanks to embedded hardware and the power of tinyML. His work is able to actively respond to a person whenever they bring up a cell phone to take a picture of it.
At the center are four primary circuits/components, which include a large speaker, an abstract LED sculpture, an old Soviet-style doorbell board, and a PCB housing the control electronics. The circuit contains an Arduino Nano 33 BLE Sense along with an OV7670 camera module that can capture objects directly in front. Tauno then trained a machine learning model with the help of Edge Impulse on almost 700 images that were labeled as human-containing, cell phone, or everything else/indeterminate.
There are many ways to make a thing ambulatory beyond simply slapping on some wheels. James Bruton often experiments with these unique drive mechanisms, whether they are practical or not. In his newest video, he built what he calls a “wave drive” to propel a tank-like robot. This experimental wave drive tank features a 3D-printed body and remote Arduino-based control.
This drive mechanism works using motion similar to someone doing the worm dance move, which is very much like how flatworms swim through water in nature. For a more technical visualization, imagine a spinning helix projected onto a 2D plane. The result looks like a sine wave, hence the name. The bottom of the wave makes contact with the ground and friction provides grip, letting the mechanism roll forward. That helix visualization also mirrors the physical implementation here, as a screw-shaped drive shaft guides tracks as it spins.

Just for clarity since we heard about some confusion in backchannel: SFC is offering membership to the Sourceware hosting project itself, not to the guest projects that receive services *from* Sourceware. We are completely aware that, for example, the various GNU projects that receive services from Sourceware already have a fiscal sponsor — i.e., the FSF. We are not seeking to take those projects from the FSF, rather, to offer SFC's services to the Sourceware hosting platform itself.

It's been a little over a year since I wrote my article on Opensource.com, introducing the Cube community. As I worked with our community members and other vendors, I've become more convinced of the benefits of open source in data analytics. I also think it's good to remind ourselves periodically why open source matters and how it provides long-term benefits for everyone.
There's an interesting observation to make here, though, and this is that courts are ordering Internet censorship — an extremely grave reduction in liberty, normally unthinkable outside of wartime — for one "crime", and one "crime" only: the free sharing of knowledge and culture, which must apparently be stopped at any cost.
This is a measure so extreme, it's not used for genocide, premeditated murder, or anything else in the crime catalog. There is but one "crime" that is so horrendous, such a grave crime against the whole of humanity, that it merits Internet censorship as ordered by would-be respectable judges:
The free sharing of scientific knowledge or popular culture. This is apparently the worst, and only, conceivable crime that merits this worst of prevention.
How many Sci-Hub users are there? The download requests came from 3 million unique IP addresses, which provides a lower bound. But the true number is much higher because thousands of people on a university campus can share the same IP address. Sci-Hub downloaders live on every continent except Antarctica. Of the 24,000 city locations to which they cluster, the busiest is Tehran, with 1.27 million requests. Much of that is from Iranians using programs to automatically download huge swaths of Sci-Hub's papers to make a local mirror of the site, Elbakyan says. Rahimi, the engineering student in Tehran, confirms this. “There are several Persian sites similar to Sci-Hub,” he says. “So you should consider Iranian illegal [paper] downloads to be five to six times higher” than what Sci-Hub alone reveals.
The geography of Sci-Hub usage generally looks like a map of scientific productivity, but with some of the richer and poorer science-focused nations flipped. The smaller countries have stories of their own. Someone in Nuuk, Greenland, is reading a paper about how best to provide cancer treatment to indigenous populations. Research goes on in Libya, even as a civil war rages there. Someone in Benghazi is investigating a method for transmitting data between computers across an air gap. Far to the south in the oil-rich desert, someone near the town of Sabhā is delving into fluid dynamics. Mapping IP addresses to real-world locations can paint a false picture if people hide behind web proxies or anonymous routing services. But according to Elbakyan, fewer than 3% of Sci-Hub users are using those.

I’ve come up with a new reprepro wrapper for adding rebuilds of existing Debian packages to a local repository: reprepro-rebuilder. It should make it quicker to update local rebuilds of existing packages, patched or unpatched, working wholly out of git.
We’ve been running dockerised Java applications on Kubernetes for a while now, all with readiness probes configured. Due to Blue/Green deployment the application would receive frequent no-downtime upgrades, and all pods would get redeployed. We’ve started running stress tests against the application in order to push it to its limits, and the following happened.

Remond modernizes database management system for an open and cloudy world

Nmap is a widely used free and open-source network scanner. It’s used for network inventorying, port scanning, managing service upgrade schedules, monitoring host or service uptime, etc. It works on most operating systems: Linux, Windows, macOS, Solaris, and BSD.
CISA released four Industrial Control Systems (ICS) advisories on September 08, 2022. These advisories provide timely information about current security issues, vulnerabilities, and exploits surrounding ICS.
CISA has added twelve new vulnerabilities to itsââ¬Â¯Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, based on evidence of active exploitation. These types of vulnerabilities are a frequent attack vector for malicious cyber actors and pose significant risk to the federal enterprise. Note: to view the newly added vulnerabilities in the catalog, click on the arrow in the "Date Added to Catalog" column, which will sort by descending dates.
The attack is based on Microsoft’s Power Automate, an automation tool that was built into Windows 11. Power Automate uses a form of robotic process automation, also known as RPA, in which a computer mimics a human’s actions to complete tasks. If you want to get a notification each time an RSS feed is updated, you can build a custom RPA process to make that happen. Thousands of these automations exist, and Microsoft’s software can link up Outlook, Teams, Dropbox, and other apps.
The software is part of a broader low-code/no-code movement that aims to create tools people can use to create things without having any coding knowledge. “Every business user now has the power that the developer used to have,” Bargury says. His company exists to help secure low-code/no-code apps.
Now, security researchers who specialize in industrial control systems cybersecurity (ICS) and who have analyzed the data published by Cl0p think the gang could potentially have interfered with the systems of South Staff Water (SSW), a UK water supply provider.
“They appear to have had sufficient access in the environment to conduct further operations in the environment, if desired,” Mark Plemmons, senior director of threat intelligence at the ICS cybersecurity company Dragos, told Motherboard in an email.
Chile’s cybersecurity incident response team said an unnamed government agency is dealing with a ransomware attack that targeted the organization’s Microsoft tools and VMware ESXi servers.
Chile’s CSIRT said the attack started last Thursday but did not respond to requests for comment about what group was behind the attack or what department or agency was attacked.
The attacks, which were carried out Friday and Saturday, crippled government-run transportation services and online platforms for information, as well as water and electricity systems.
According to Public Administration Minister Maras Dukaj, 150 devices within 10 government agencies were infected, and many government websites are still down.
Security firm SolarWinds has avoided a lawsuit filed by investors in Delaware last year, with Delaware Court of Chancery vice-chancellor Sam Glasscock dismissing the suit.
Investors sued the directors of the company, claiming they were aware of the risks that the firm's software posed, but failed to act to prevent devastating attacks that came to light in 2020. The attacks were given the moniker SUNBURST.
The suit was filed on 4 November 2021 in the Delaware Chancery Court, by the Construction Industry Labourers Pension Fund, the Central Labourers' Pension Fund, and two individual investors.

The Biden administration has pointed, with alarm, to the national security implications of both cybersecurity and cryptocurrency. It’s just a matter of time before the government begins worrying about their intersection—cryptocurrency security. All of the United States’ international adversaries are in the business of exploiting bad cybersecurity, and many of them monetize their exploits using cryptocurrency. There’s nothing more natural for North Korean state hackers, Russian organized crime, or partially privatized cyberspies in China and Iran than to steal cryptocurrency to finance their national security operations. They’ll find an open door; because, as bad as overall cybersecurity is, the security of cryptocurrency is worse.

Welcome to the August 2022 report from the Reproducible Builds project! In these reports we outline the most important things that we have been up to over the past month. As a quick recap, whilst anyone may inspect the source code of free software for malicious flaws, almost all software is distributed to end users as pre-compiled binaries. The motivation behind the reproducible builds effort is to ensure no flaws have been introduced during this compilation process by promising identical results are always generated from a given source, thus allowing multiple third-parties to come to a consensus on whether a build was compromised.
Linux is the most secure operating system on the market; for years, that has been one of the open source platform’s best selling points. However, as with anything regarding technology, it’s only a matter of time before criminals catch up. This has been the case with every operating system, software and service. At this point, to say Linux is immune to malicious software would be a fallacy.
The sad truth is if it’s connected to a network, it’s vulnerable. It doesn’t matter what operating system you use — the longer it’s in play, the more likely it will become a target. And Linux is no exception.
Over the past few years, Linux has had a target drawn on its back. Given how enterprise businesses now live and die by open source technology, including the Linux OS, it should come as no surprise that this has become a reality, and it’s not going to go away. In fact, if I had to guess, I’d say that the rise of malicious software targeting Linux deployments will become staggering over the next decade.
EFF also supports two other California bills that would protect the data privacy of vulnerable people who seek medical sanctuary in California. S.B. 107 would protect trans youths who visit to obtain gender-affirming care, and A.B. 2091 would protect people who visit to obtain abortion.
A bomb from the Second World War was discovered during expansion work at the central railway station in Luxembourg City on Wednesday, prompting preventive evacuations. At around 2.50pm, the defusing work was completed.
Finally, The Waqf Act, 1995 was enacted and implemented on November 22, 1995. This Act established the Central Waqf Council and the State Waqf Board. These two bodies are responsible for the administration and supervision of auqaf along with the Chief Executive Officer who is a subordinate to the board. Further, this act provides for the power and functions of the Council, the Board(s) and the Chief Executive Officer, and also the duties of mutawalli.
Most of the encroachments are reported in Punjab (5,610), followed by Madhya Pradesh (3,240) and West Bengal with 3,082. Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have reported 1,335 and 862 encroachments, respectively.
Seaman Recruit Ryan Mays, 21, has been charged with aggravated arson and hazarding a vessel in the 2020 fire that destroyed the USS Bonhomme Richard. Mays has maintained his innocence.
The email was not from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, the police force that employs them and that residents fund with their taxes. Instead, it was from a retired city police detective named Charles “Rob” Betts, who also employs them at his private company, The City’s Finest.
The International Atomic Energy Agency is calling for a safety and security protection zone to be immediately set up around the facility in order to avoid a nuclear disaster at Europe’s largest nuclear power plant. This week it released a long-awaited report urging Russia and Ukraine to create a demilitarized zone around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, after visiting it last week. “Their warnings are pretty clear: Unless the fighting stops, unless the shelling around and on the plant site stops, … then the plant is really skating on thin ice,” says Edwin Lyman, director of nuclear power safety at the Union of Concerned Scientists. We also go to Kyiv to speak with Olexi Pasyuk, deputy director of Ukrainian environmental group Ecoaction, who says the IAEA report will have limited impact on the fighting but helps raise awareness of the risks. “This is what Ukraine wanted to hear … that the only way to have it safe is to demilitarize the area,” says Pasyuk.
Numerous questions remain about where the public stands 20 plus years after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. What do Americans think about our past wars, and would the public stomach renewed violence in the name of fighting al Qaeda, ISIS, or some other Islamist movement that’s hostile to the United States if a future president (or the current one) recommitted the U.S. to the “War on Terror”?
If a smartphone were designed to last a decade, it would probably be made so that we could simply open it up to replace a part like a depleted battery or a cracked screen. Many of its components would be able to be upgraded — if you wanted a better camera, you could just swap out the old one for a newer, more powerful one. “The Commission proposes a limit of €200/MWh” on so-called “inframarginal” electricity generators, the proposal says in reference to renewables, nuclear and lignite, which have low operating costs and have benefitted the most from high gas prices.
Producers of renewable and nuclear electricity are making “enormous revenues” from the crisis, explained Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission.
In addition, “we will propose a mandatory target for reducing electricity use at peak hours,” Ms von der Leyen said. In the EU, gas and electricity plants are activated at peak times to cope with surges in demand, meaning that if usage is reduced at those moments, the use of expensive gas can be avoided.
The unprecedented plan to step into energy markets also includes a levy on fossil-fuel producers, a price cap on Russian gas imports, measures to increase liquidity for energy companies if needed and a mandatory target reduction of electricity use. The EU is coming under mounting pressure to curb the spike in energy prices and avoid social upheaval as the heating season nears.
The EU plan favours a "smart savings of electricity" while acknowledging that electricity demand is expected to increase due to, for example, the electrification of road transport.

Insurance is a key safety net of western modern life, and many take the insurance of property for granted. House and contents insurance, it is envisaged, will be there if disaster strikes. However, a lack of meaningful action to mitigate climate change is putting this sense of security at risk. For households, there is growing uncertainty about what the future may hold. There are examples, worldwide, of insurers withdrawing from certain markets and households being less and less likely to be able to access or afford property insurance.€
Prices for funerals have always been steep. Funeral homes charged a median of $7,848 for a viewing and burial last year, according to the National Funeral Directors Association, and $6,970 for a cremation. Those costs don’t include the charges from cemeteries, which can add thousands more. ProPublica recently investigated one cemetery whose charges could run into the tens of thousands of dollars.

Harri Hursti has bought about 200 used voting machines without incident, but the one he purchased on eBay last month is now the subject of a state investigation, with Michigan officials determined to find out how the device ended up for sale online.
The machine was purchased by a cybersecurity expert in Connecticut who alerted Michigan authorities and is now waiting for law enforcement to pick up the device. CNN determined the machine was dropped off at a Goodwill store in Northern Michigan, before being sold last month on eBay by a man in Ohio.
In an interview with CNN, the Ohio man said he purchased the machine online at Goodwill for $7.99 before auctioning it on eBay for $1,200.

Of course, the abortion-rights battle must be waged on all fronts. But legal and legislative victories will only be won securely as a result of winning broad and deep political support—persuading a majority of people of the justice and necessity of the cause. That is the kind of political work that created the conditions for Roe v. Wade—independent, risky personal and collective political action, including civil disobedience, that highlighted the plight and right of pregnant women, and the hypocrisy and cruelty of criminalizing abortion.

I think it's absolutely scandalous that telecommunications providers in Canada can charge so much money, especially since the most prohibitive fee (the "non-prepaid" plans) are automatically charged if I happen to forget to remove my sim card or put my phone in "airplane mode".
As advised, I have called customer service at Fido for advice on how to handle this situation. They have confirmed those are the only plans available for travelers and could not accommodate me otherwise. I have notified them I was in the process of filing this complaint.
I believe that Canada has become the technological dunce of the world, and I blame the CRTC for its lack of regulation in that matter. You should not allow those companies to grow into such a cartel that they can do such price-fixing as they wish.

The chip at right center appears to be a Mostek Z80 8-bit CPU. The top-right chip is a DMA controller. I thought at first that the chip on the bottom right might be an early Intel CPU, but I believe it is actually a bus interface, evidently tied to the Z80.
SSH through Android hotspot didn't workout, even though by default SSH should work out-of-the-box on any Linux distribution... I am pretty sure the reason is that is not allowed. However it consumed 5 mega doing anything therefore I won't use it anyway...
At work, we have a weekly "knowledge sharing" meeting, yesterday I talked about the state of NixOS deployments tools.
I had to look at all the tools we currently have at hand before starting my own, so it made sense to share all what I found.
This is a real topic, it doesn't make much sense to use regular sysadmins tools like ansible / puppet / salt etc... on NixOS, we need specific tools, and there is currently a bunch of them, and it can be hard to decide which one to use.
I recently switched our power and gas supplier to The Energy Co-op because I wanted our apartment to start using renewable energy. Although we’re not literally using power that comes straight out of wind turbines and solar panels (The Energy Co-op works by buying and retiring RECs for their subscribers), I feel good about redirecting our monthly bill to fund renewable energy facilities. It’s a little more expensive, but I think it’s still worth it for me.
