what makes the gpl work (in non-SaaSS scenarios) is the fact that, when you distribute the binary, you have to at least offer the corresponding sources

even if some license were to state such an obligation, that’s not how copyright licenses work. licenses grant permissions. establishing an arbitrary requirement on uncovered matter is a matter for contracts, with explicit assent, rather than licenses, that are unilaterally granted.

it might work to condition certain permissions to the performance of other actions, but then, someone who only uses the design specs as a basis for their microprocessor product doesn’t need any permission to modify, adapt, distribute or publicly perform the original design. even if they introduce changes to the design, they may be documented and described in separate, independent documents. so a copyright license on the design

Sad that. RISC-V being “open” then does virtually nothing for our culture as a whole, it’s only a starting-point resource for companies to make their proprietary products, just as they do ordinarily. There is nothing revolutionary here. Just like “open source” without the GPL, you are going to find Minix hiding in Intel ME. That is not what we are after - no, not at all.

the only thing that will actually work in the long run is consumer/customer’s educated demands (for their freedoms to be respected), and market freedom to tend to their demands (so that no dominant position can prevent others from tending to customers’ legitimate demands)

this, with educated consumers, would render copyleft and similar defenses unnecessary. we’re not there wrt software or anything else, alas, and likely never will. but there’s nothing even vaguely similar to copyleft when it comes to actual hardware, and I doubt introducing more unjust laws that promote power over others is a solution, even if they were to bring with them copyleft-analogous defenses on exceptions

I think had it not been for Covid19 and failure of the US government to get a grip, then the Killing of George FLoyd would have just been yet another police brutality incident, but Covid19 has caused anger, heartache on a huge scale, so the two were a perfect storm, What happened to George FLoyd just pushed people over the edge of their tolerance level.

Social media has played a part, sharing videos, stories, there is now a huge movement, people are finding their voice, starting to see people for who they really are, stories move very very quickly people add to them, social media of all types allows communication and coordination on a huge scale, something governments have failed with.

Add to that, huge unemployment, corporates getting rid of staff en masse, the people, without whom they would not be run by billionaires, meanwhile the government bail these huge companies out, but only pay the workers what was it $1200.

I don’t think governments are capable of learning lessons, Trump said early on about draining the swamp, this needs to happen, we need to vastly change the way we do things, and yes, defund the police or at least not have them armed like they are a subset of the Army, so that we can fund grass roots community level projects, start trusting people by not spying on them, protect and stand up for the constitution and values that
