[06:45] schestowitz It's really outside my area of knowledge, so we both need to ask people in that domain. [06:45] schestowitz The debate has been polluted by a lot of nonsense, so it's hard to separate fiction from fact. And it's likely that it's all just nonsense, says gut feeling. [08:45] schestowitz my edit below: [08:46] schestowitz NO Software Patents in Europe via the Unified Patent Court! [08:46] schestowitz We are protesting against software patents in Europe. [08:46] schestowitz Software patents are an insult to our profession, steal our jobs, and are promoting extortion-centric practices like patent trolling. [08:46] schestowitz After Brexit, we are asking our politicians to renegotiate the Unified Patent Court (UPC) and put back the European Court of Justice (CJEU) in control, such that it is again having a say on patent law, and software patents in particular (ex art6-8, veto from the UK and Mr Cameron, pushed by the British patent industry and GSK, a large vaccine manufacturer). [08:46] schestowitz We oppose Germany's move to try to push the UPC treaty into force ('fait accompli') while London is still in the text. [08:46] schestowitz The UPC would raise the court fees for a simple dispute from 600EUR (average of court fees in most EU countries) to 12.000EUR (20.000EUR - 40% rebate for small companies), while the current national systems are already too expensive because of unusually expensive lawyer fees. Were guessing that we have something in common with a substantial number of our readers in that this post is being written on an open-source operating system. A well-known GNU/Linux distribution provides everything you might expect from a PC, but of course its not the only open-source game in town. A year-old piece from [Unixsheikh] caught the eye with the title Why you should migrate everything from [09:09] schestowitz Linux to BSD, and being naturally curious, it was worth a read. Its interesting enough to talk about here not because of its BSD advocacy, but because of its examination of some of GNU/Linuxs shortcomings. Using and appreciating an operating system shouldnt mean slavish fandom, its worth every Linux user taking a moment to consider its points.
