If the wifi is in the 5GHz band, then you pretty much have a full ran [06:22] techright-sec[2] ge of choices since there is no overlap *and* [06:22] techright-sec[2] so few know about it. [06:23] schestowitz-TR2 I already moved off 2.4 when you suggested it [06:23] schestowitz-TR2 the main issue was [06:23] schestowitz-TR2 I assumed it was the OTHER machine on the side of barrier needing another channel/wavelength [06:23] schestowitz-TR2 when I saw that sdynergy too had this issue I thought maybe I'm looking at the "wrong" end [06:24] techright-sec[2] So what was the actual problem and the resolution? [06:25] schestowitz-TR2 reconnect, let the network allocate another range to this PC [06:25] techright-sec[2] Oh, it was a DHCP problem then [06:25] techright-sec[2] not a wi-fi problem per se [06:27] schestowitz-TR2 or maybe a neighbour waking up around 5:40am [06:27] schestowitz-TR2 2 hours later [06:27] schestowitz-TR2 causing signal collision [06:27] schestowitz-TR2 which was not there at first [06:27] schestowitz-TR2 but who knows... [06:27] schestowitz-TR2 anyway, it's solved not and latency seems lower than before the router was rebooted [06:27] techright-sec[2] How was it solved? I'm not following this at all, there's nothing in IRC either [06:31] schestowitz-TR2 acquiring a connection again [06:31] schestowitz-TR2 I don't know wi-fi protocol [06:31] schestowitz-TR2 but I assume that for each connection machine it negotiates some broadcasting range and sets that apart [06:31] schestowitz-TR2 a good enough buffer to avoid having to resend packets [06:31] schestowitz-TR2 and that's aside from the general channele the router uses, which can have a conflict with a neigbour [06:31] schestowitz-TR2 sometimes they suggest rebooting on auto mode so it can scan for channels that are 'optimal' [06:36] techright-sec[2] First there is a radio connection, then IP, then DHCP, then TCP/IP [06:36] techright-sec[2] NO! Automode makes worse and if someone in the neighborhood has done that, then [06:36] techright-sec[2] they are who is messing up the signal for the block. :( [06:36] techright-sec[2] In 2.4GHz the only acceptable choices are 1, 6, or 11. Choose the one which [06:36] techright-sec[2] has the least traffic. If there are any neighbors on 2-5 or 7-10 they will [06:36] techright-sec[2] be completely destroying the signal through interference and will have to [06:36] techright-sec[2] be spoken with for negotiation since it might be illegal and certainly unethical [06:36] techright-sec[2] to spend the trivial amount of time it would take to crack their router and [06:36] techright-sec[2] set the numbers to something sensible. [06:36] techright-sec[2] On 5GHz,the channes to not overlap. So just choose the one there with the [06:36] techright-sec[2] fewest access points or, failing that, least traffic. For the younger generations, tiktok is causing great destruction. [10:10] techrights-sec[2] I'd mention yet again that few institutions have IT departments any longer [10:10] techrights-sec[2] and have instead m$ resellers on the payroll working against the institution [10:10] techrights-sec[2] itself in most cases or merely neutral and working for itself in the best of [10:10] techrights-sec[2] cases. [10:10] techrights-sec[2] That's Bill's legacy: making bad engineering acceptable and common place [10:10] techrights-sec[2] No one gets fired even though "tools grumble and grind, then fail" [10:10] techrights-sec[2] Not those that brought in the crappy tools and not those that brought in the [10:10] techrights-sec[2] untrained monkeys in place of IT people [10:10] techrights-sec[2] Which "they" can move web pages? At one institution I tracked the time it [10:10] techrights-sec[2] took to get one document posted to the official web site and it took well over [10:10] techrights-sec[2] 8 man-hours, for a finished document in its final form, just to get it public. [10:10] techrights-sec[2] As for " rats who have forgotten life before the maze " didn't Douglas Adams have something to say about acceptan [10:10] techrights-sec[2] ce or rejection of situations being related [10:10] techrights-sec[2] to their status relative to one's life? It was along the lines of stuff that [10:10] techrights-sec[2] was in place during youth had "always been there and was part of the natural [10:10] techrights-sec[2] order of things" and stuff that arrived when one was middle aged was considered [10:10] techrights-sec[2] problematic and a threat. That is of course hyperbole but I think the first [10:10] techrights-sec[2] part is spot on, for rats that grew up in the maze there is nothing else [10:10] techrights-sec[2] imaginable, nope not even imaginable. [10:10] techrights-sec[2] One thing that is important to remember, to put the original goals in context, [10:10] techrights-sec[2] was the Steve Jobs' sales pitch about the computer being a tool, like a [10:10] techrights-sec[2] bicyce for the mind. There are good transcripts out there worth quoting. [10:10] techrights-sec[2] Computerss have become inverted in purpose. Instead of being a tool to [10:10] techrights-sec[2] amplify results, they have become a vehicle for manipulation and control of [10:10] techrights-sec[2] the ostensible user as well as a time sink for what the late David Graeber [10:10] techrights-sec[2] identified as "bullshit" jobs. Indeed, really few areas have seen advancement [10:11] techrights-sec[2] in recent years. Embedded systems are one area but that is mostly through [10:11] techrights-sec[2] better software to make it easy to program. [10:11] techrights-sec[2] The term "system" ought to be defined near the start to provide context for [10:11] techrights-sec[2] the rest of the document. But it looks like [16:13] techrights-sec[2] he did that just enough to get his foot in the door and may have had his eye [16:13] techrights-sec[2] on selling out from very early on [16:14] schestowitz-TR2 he is in a dying occupation [16:14] schestowitz-TR2 like his former employer in india [16:14] schestowitz-TR2 he's not a techie [16:17] techrights-sec[2] advertising / marketeering is far from dying out unfortunately [16:21] schestowitz-TR2 I'd say, [16:21] schestowitz-TR2 he came from corproate 'journalism' [16:21] schestowitz-TR2 not the same as PR [16:21] schestowitz-TR2 but close to it [16:21] schestowitz-TR2 sean michael kernel (ex/current LinuxToday) sort of defected as well [16:21] schestowitz-TR2 just to survive [16:21] schestowitz-TR2 there are barely any job openbings for investigators in the press [16:21] schestowitz-TR2 those that still exist have lots of competition over them [16:21] schestowitz-TR2 due to the layoffs [16:21] schestowitz-TR2 Sheela Microsoft and the wife James Z probably chose to keep Spamnil [16:21] schestowitz-TR2 because he was easier to control and he would promote and resort to fraud [16:21] schestowitz-TR2 he ruined linux.com already and did not stop there [16:21] schestowitz-TR2 I am sometimes reluctant to use the term "Linux" anymore [16:21] schestowitz-TR2 because of what this brand implies [16:21] schestowitz-TR2 rust, "microsoftr loves", clown, etc. [16:23] techrights-sec[2] I think that was the reason he was hired :( [16:23] techrights-sec[2] Yes he is helping tarnish or even kill the brand [16:27] schestowitz-TR2 9 days, 9 views [16:27] schestowitz-TR2 latest from lunduke is beter... [16:27] schestowitz-TR2 [checking] [16:27] schestowitz-TR2 lunduke 2 days, 380 views [16:27] schestowitz-TR2 just like in the old days [16:27] schestowitz-TR2 I clicked on that the other day just to check [16:27] schestowitz-TR2 i think you'd have to judge for yourself [16:27] schestowitz-TR2 butit was awful [16:27] schestowitz-TR2 it was just him talking about himself and marketing his "membership" [16:27] schestowitz-TR2 nothing on the screen, no face, no nothing [16:27] schestowitz-TR2 just persistent promotional banner [16:28] schestowitz-TR2 for 39:40 min:sec [16:28] schestowitz-TR2 the video before this one is older and 150 views [16:28] schestowitz-TR2 in youtube [16:28] schestowitz-TR2 he used to get thousands before he told people to quit youtube [16:28] schestowitz-TR2 he purges himself, then has remorse [16:28] schestowitz-TR2 in one video that he pinned it shows him drinking a ban of beer, I think [16:28] schestowitz-TR2 cheap macho-muchu [16:28] schestowitz-TR2 like fabsh from linuxoutlaws [16:29] schestowitz-TR2 it's like walking into a pub to find a singer who was once on tv or had chart hits, just trying to make rebound [16:46] techrights-sec[2] yes that's how bryan rolls these days. It is months between useful or even [16:46] techrights-sec[2] entertaining items on his site. [16:49] techrights-sec[2] He has (or had) the capability and knowledge to do a comeback [16:49] techrights-sec[2] if he really wanted to. But he hasn't covered any relevant topics hardly at [16:49] techrights-sec[2] all for a few years now. [16:57] schestowitz-TR2 many things 'collapse' these days [16:57] schestowitz-TR2 if you do not yourself "collapse", you are better off than the average [16:57] schestowitz-TR2 I was never a fan of Lunduke [16:57] schestowitz-TR2 but when it's hard to find material I can settle for anything (almost) ● Oct 23 [20:19] *starstreak has quit (Ping timeout: 2m30s) [20:25] *starstreak (~starstreak@muarsy2vret2q.irc) has joined #boycottnovell [20:37] *DaemonFC (~daemonfc@a9wf8v67hqmqg.irc) has joined #boycottnovell [20:53] *psydroid2 has quit (connection closed) [20:55] *starstreak has quit (Quit: Leaving) ● Oct 23 [21:20] *starstreak (~starstreak@muarsy2vret2q.irc) has joined #boycottnovell ● Oct 23 [23:37] *DaemonFC has quit (Quit: Leaving)
