[03:47] schestowitz[03:47] schestowitzIf I should owe my allegiance to any programming language, it would be Hare. Not only is it a systems programming language that I designed myself, but I am using it to write a kernel. Like Rust, Hare is demonstrably useful for writing kernels with. One might even go so far as to suggest that I consider it superior to C for this purpose, given that I chose to to write Helios in Hare it rather than C, despite [03:47] -TechBytesBot/#techbytes-drewdevault.com | Does Rust belong in the Linux kernel? [03:47] schestowitz my extensive background in C. But the question remains: does Hare belong in the Linux kernel?

[03:47] schestowitz[03:47] schestowitzSo, as is hopefully clear to everybody, the major version number change is more about me running out of fingers and toes than it is about any big fundamental changes.

[03:48] schestowitz[03:48] schestowitzThe Linux 6.0 kernel is out, formerly "5.20," and on its way to a distro near you. Keeping in mind that no Linux numerical release corresponds to any particular milestone, real or imagined, the marquee improvements include more graphics hardware support, XFS performance and scalability improvements (I like this in particular since my Fedora root is still XFS), further preparations for Compute Express Link, [03:48] schestowitz zero-copy send for networking and io_uring userspace block driver support.

[04:01] schestowitz[04:01] schestowitzI upgraded to Fedora 37 several days ago (pre-release).
[04:01] schestowitzOverall, that went well. (Post in process on that.)

[04:13] schestowitz[04:14] schestowitzThe headline result is: Choice 5 / Proposal E won: Change SC for non-free firmware in installer, one installer. I'm happy with this - it's the option that I voted highest, after all. More importantly, however, it's a clear choice of direction, as I was hoping for. Of the 366 Debian Developers who voted, 289 of them voted this option above NOTA and 63 below, so it also meets the 3:1 super-majority [04:14] schestowitz requirement for amending a Debian Foundation Document (Constitution section 4.1.3).

[04:14] schestowitz[04:14] schestowitzThe Debian project is making a major change to how it handles proprietary software in the next version. Debian 12's installer will feature proprietary firmware in order to make installation easier with Wi-Fi adapters.
[04:14] schestowitz
[04:14] schestowitz[04:14] schestowitzThe vote also changes the Debian Social Contract to make it clear that including non-free firmware in this manner is allowed.

[05:41] schestowitz[05:41] schestowitzIm not an expert on internal Google politics, but it seems to meand Ive heard elsewherethat they pretty much let engineers run everything. The coding, obviously, but also a whole lot of the product side as well.
[05:41] schestowitzIf thats true, its not working. Again, maybe there are other factors that Im not aware of, but to me this reads as not having a clear product vision and solid designers as part of product teams.

[09:48] schestowitz[09:48] schestowitzWe can extrapolate the coroner's findings to both the suicide of Frans Pop and also the death of Lucy Wayland. In Wayland's case, the coroner has stated that alcoholism was a factor. Experts classify alcoholism as a form of self harm. While Wayland's death was ruled an accident, it involved self harm, which is analogous to the phenomena described in the case of Molly Russell.
