[06:08] schestowitz[TR2] Extreme (nearly universal) Leftist bias, total refusal to cover any big Tech stories which make Leftism look bad (see: the IBM/Red Hat leaks), inflated (fake) viewership numbers, and a near total lack of deep, investigative journalism regarding the computer industry. [06:08] schestowitz[TR2] Heres the dirty secret: [06:08] schestowitz[TR2] Many of the editors and publishers of those Big Tech News outlets are very well aware of the problems but they wont be fixing them. In some cases because of an inability to fix the issues in other cases because of a refusal to. [06:08] schestowitz[TR2] For example: [06:08] schestowitz[TR2] The extreme Leftism of all of the Big outlets is going to remain. [06:08] schestowitz[TR2] Why? Because those are the views of 99% (give or take) of the writers. And, in their world view, saying anything positive about *any* person who might be perceived as Not Leftist is forbidden. Political virtue signaling is a requirement. [06:08] schestowitz[TR2] But thats only part of the problem. [06:08] schestowitz[TR2] All of the Big Tech News outlets get nearly 100% of their funding from Big Tech. And those funds are, in most cases, barely enough for them to stay in business. Which means the News Outlets are willing to do anything to keep Big Tech happy. [06:08] schestowitz[TR2] And I mean *anything*. [06:08] schestowitz[TR2] Were not just talking about high levels of advertising and sponsorships but sponsored content. Paid advertisements made to look like real articles. In essence, turning over editorial control to sponsors. [06:08] schestowitz[TR2] That Sponsored Content happens more often than most people realize. If you take 5 minutes to scroll through the Top Headlines of 2 or 3 of the Big Tech News sites right now guaranteed youll read sponsored content headlines at least 5 or 6 times. [06:08] schestowitz[TR2] At LEAST. [06:08] schestowitz[TR2] Sometimes theyre labeled as such. Most of the time they are not. [06:08] schestowitz[TR2] These Tech News outlets feel they have no choice in the matter. They need every dollar (heck, every penny) they can get to stay afloat, and saying No to a big advertiser is the kiss of death. [06:08] schestowitz[TR2] Which means the fake, curated, Tech News will continue. [06:08] schestowitz[TR2] And deep, investigative Tech Journalism? [06:08] schestowitz[TR2] Not a chance. [06:08] schestowitz[TR2] Either because of that previously mentioned political bias, a fear of pissing off a potential advertiser, or a total lack of skill none of the Big Tech News outlets are likely to run with any story that requires deep digging. [06:08] schestowitz[TR2] I can count on one hand (with a few fingers left unused) the number of Tech Journalists, working today, who have engaged in truly valuable, deep, investigative Tech Journalism over the last 5 years. [06:08] schestowitz[TR2] All of these things Ive just mentioned are only scratching the surface of the many, varied issues currently plaguing the business of Tech Journalism. [06:08] schestowitz[TR2] Every single one of these problems are well understood by those in the industry. [06:08] schestowitz[TR2] And there is zero chance of any of them being fixed. [06:08] schestowitz[TR2] Not all hope is lost, mind you. [06:08] schestowitz[TR2] There are bright spots in the world of Tech Journalism, and a slight glimmer of hope. If you know where to look."
