schestowitz[TR2]All big corporations, Tech companies, especially , follow the trends. Whether it’s putting people on pips. Adopting stacked ranking evaluations. Switching as many people jobs out to AI as possible. Moving jobs offshore.Sep 11 02:15
schestowitz[TR2]The bottom line is companies do whatever they think will maximize profits . If one company tries something., and there are rumors of positive financial results, the other companies will try it.Sep 11 02:15
schestowitz[TR2]Stacked ranking was a good example. It was, and is , a barbaric way to rate your employees.. It originally iwas thought that it would increase competition and make people produce more. So several large companies adopted it.. All this approach really did is demoralizes and keep people in fear. It made people care less about their jobs. I actually reduce productivity in the long run ..Sep 11 02:15
schestowitz[TR2]Pips are just another tool that several companies use now to save money. Try to make life miserable, so people will quit.. so they don’t have to pay severance , or have their unemployment insurance increase.Sep 11 02:15
schestowitz[TR2]So what it really comes down to his corporate greed. Companies will continue to follow other companies ideas for saving money and maximizing profits at the cost of the employee. Big companies don’t really care if you hate them as an employee.. they only care if you produce and make money for them.Sep 11 02:15
schestowitz[TR2]Just remember, there’s no loyalty from the big company to you. Don’t feel so obligated and loyal to any company.. it’ll never be reciprocated. You are essentially a cost component.. a line on a balance sheet. If cutting you will make more money for the company. You will be gone.Sep 11 02:15

schestowitz[TR2]@bt IBM used to have a tool called RAST that they used to manage resource actions. Top features included identifying a "tie" - that is, the need to choose a younger person to balance out the older person they desperately want to get rid of; the "tie" allows them to pretend it is not age discrimination when it most definitely was.Sep 11 17:18
schestowitz[TR2]RAST also helped to ensure that per RA they could keep the total laid off to less than 50 people per site. That is the WARN limit. IBM can ignore WARN if they can keep under that. Obviously the total can be vastly higher - multiple 49 by the number of sites and perhaps expect they will use WARN in places highly regulated like California. The count starts over for each RA.Sep 11 17:18
schestowitz[TR2]In this manner IBM has shrunk the US workforce to just 43k from its post Gertsner numbers of nearly 200k despite many acquisitions and grown IBM India to over 150k.Sep 11 17:18

schestowitz[TR2]Came to US single in 2012. Did my masters in CS  and started working with a pay of ~ $90K. Took 50k loan for my master's which I took 18 months to relay at a rate of 3k per month. Got a new job in 2015 with a pay of 110K. Got married in 2016. Sent my wife to school and paid around 40k for her tuition out of my own pocket. So by 2017, whatever I saved went into her education and I hardly had any money in my account. 2017 mid I got iSep 11 21:40
schestowitz[TR2]nto Amazon as SDE 1. If I remember I got 80 stocks (at that time each stock was 900, this is pre-split) and then I got 20 more stocks in 2019 when I get to SDE 2. In total, I got 100 stocks, 50 went into taxes, 50 I was left with. Then 1:20 split happned so as of today I have 1000 stocks roughly worth 250k.Sep 11 21:40
schestowitz[TR2]2022, I moved to a startup, worked there for a year and got lay off. Made some decent cash during that year. I think my salary was around 300k USD, something like that which was higher than amazon as I hit my 4-year mark and got to the cliff.Sep 11 21:40
schestowitz[TR2]2022, after layout, I moved to Canada so that I can get citizenship and took a solid pay cut. Joined MSFT as L63. They gave me 200k worth of stocks + 150ish CAD as base. At the time of each stock was 240 USD and not its around 490ish. By the end of this year, I will complete my 4 years, and I should have stocks of 225K USD. I am a L64 today.Sep 11 21:40
schestowitz[TR2]So overall, I am working since 2014, around 12.5 years now and first few years went into all sorts of loan. Since 2017 I started building some wealth. My wife's job has been very average and thats ok. She was never supposed to be in tech but she kinda going ok, in Canada, making around 100k. I have no issues with that, but when I look just my wealth creation, it has not been a good trajectory. As a combined couple we are sitting arSep 11 21:40
schestowitz[TR2]ound some 1.2 million USD, which includes everything, 401K, RRSP etc etc, down to the last penny + I own a 1.8 CR flat in Bangalore for which I have already pay 1.2 CRs. I am speculating that by a year or so I will fully pay this amount without withdrawing any money from our portfolio.Sep 11 21:40
schestowitz[TR2]Now comes the question. I do agree that I am average software engineer and with 12 years of experience being on L64 is not a good trajectory, but it is what it is.  However, I have seen so many average folks with my trajectory and have really made a huge portfolio, so I want to understand where I went wrong. I was fortunate that I saw a good run in the market where my amazon + msft stocks did well + I invested in SPY which also didSep 11 21:40

schestowitz[TR2]What changes should I bring that helps me build a large portfolio. Changing jobs can help but then I did that too and not sure how good those decisions were. I am looking for recommendations on how I can expediate my progress here."Sep 11 21:40
