●● IRC: #techbytes @ Techrights IRC Network: Friday, January 20, 2023 ●● ● Jan 20 [03:15] schestowitz " [03:15] schestowitz Did you get laid off and the WARN ACT [03:15] schestowitz The WARN Act requires an employer to notify employees, in writing, 60 days before a layoff, and pay the employee for those 60 days, in addition to any severance the employee may be entitled to. Unfortunately, some employers attempt to circumvent the law. If your employer did not provide you the 60 days notice (and pay you for those 60 days), please contact the Federal Department of Labor (DOL) or your states WARN office for help. [03:15] schestowitz The original Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) was a Federal law that applied to all 50 states. Since the Federal WARN law was passed, most states have enacted a state WARN Act. [03:15] schestowitz Among other things, the state WARN acts require employers to report layoff statistics to a state office. In fact, an employer may report the number of employees they intend to layoff, by location, before the layoff and report that information to a state WARN act office. [03:15] schestowitz Therefore, assuming the employer complied with state law, you might be able to learn about the number of employees an employer intends to layoff, by location, before the layoff. Otherwise, you can determine the number of employees that were laid off after the layoff. [03:15] schestowitz If your employer laid off employees and you dont find the layoff statistics on the sites below, you may anonymously report this to your states office responsible for the WARN act, and they will instruct the employer to report the statistics [03:15] schestowitz Washington [03:16] schestowitz https://esd.wa.gov/about-employees/WARN [03:16] -TechBytesBot/#techbytes-esd.wa.gov | ESDWAGOV - Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) [03:16] schestowitz Select this link: Please reference the WARN notice database for current & past notices [03:16] schestowitz If you are located in another state, please type this into any search engine: WARN ACT and [state name], e.g. Arizona [03:16] schestowitz 6 hours ago by Anonymous [03:16] schestowitz | 637 views | 5 reactions (+1/-4) | 4 replies (last 3 hours ago) [03:16] schestowitz Post ID: @OP+1kL11izb [03:16] schestowitz Click to get Alert when there is a new reply. Many states do not enforce the Warn Act. [03:16] schestowitz I worked at a company that had just over 200 employees at 2 locations. The same week as Thanksgiving 75 of us were laid off with no warning. [03:16] schestowitz I called the unemployment office to file for unemployment and told them about the lack of warning and they told me that my only recourse was to sue my former employer. They (the state) would not go after them. Peer review has failed, and thats great news for diamond open access, science and society

One of the strongest and most frequent arguments against the minimalist approach of diamond open access is that it often comes without the traditional apparatus of peer review, organising which would be too costly for what are typically tiny publishing budgets. Mastroiannis posts confirm its absence really doesnt matter, because peer review adds nothing, and may even reduce the scientific value of [09:36] schestowitz papers that undergo it. Thats great news for open access, whose gold and green forms are still struggling to achieve their aims. Its also great news for science and thus society, both of which stand to gain easier access to more interesting and potentially more useful research.
