The GSoC is an excellent opportunity for gaining real-world experience in software design and making oneself known in the broader open source community. It also looks great on a resume. Some initial project ideas can be found here, but new projects ideas are also welcome. For new projects time is of the essence: they have to be worked out, discussed with the mentors, and submitted before th [17:27] schestowitz[TR] e April 4th deadline. It is strongly recommended that contributors refine new project ideas with a mentor before proposing the idea formally.

    The Hayes Code

The other factor was Dennis Hayes. A onetime engineer for National Data Corporation who had experience working with AT&Ts Long Lines service, his job was actually setting up modems that made it possible for retailers to offer credit card machines. Those modems, built to connect to mainframes, didnt need acoustic couplers, which meant that the job taught him a skill that would soon pro [17:29] schestowitz[TR] ve extremely valuable to the PC industry at large.

Detecting falls by embedding ML into clothing
    [17:30] schestowitz[TR]
    [17:30] schestowitz[TR]

At first, Vikstrom tried to gather and label data for all kinds of activities, including sitting, walking, running, driving, etc., but later realized anomaly detection would be much better suited for this application. After collecting around 80 seconds of data with Edge Impulse Studio, he trained an anomaly detection model to detect when any out-of-the-ordinary events occur. The model was t [17:30] schestowitz[TR] hen deployed to the Nicla Sense ME by integrating the inferencing code with a BLE service that outputs a positive value when a fall is detected, as well as illuminating the onboard LED.

James Bruton improves his triangle-tracked tank
    [17:30] schestowitz[TR]
    [17:30] schestowitz[TR]

The overall concept is the same as the original: three tank tracks arranged in a triangle formation contain rollers perpendicular to the track direction. The rollers let the tracks slide freely side-to-side, but provide grip when the track moves forward or backward. With three of those tracks, the robot can move in any direction by vectoring the relative rotational speeds. The original desi [17:30] schestowitz[TR] gn struggled, because it couldnt get traction unless it was flat on the ground. The new design has three differences to address that: trapezoidal tracks, a sort of pivoting suspension system, and dual rollers positioned on the outsides of the tracks.

Monitoring an Aquarium with InfluxDB and Grafana

In this post I'll talk about the aquarium monitoring and alerting system that I've built using a Raspberry Pi, InfluxDB, Telegraf and Grafana.

DHS and Cybersecurity Agency Cannot Search for Text Messages with Election Deniers Because of Prior Practice of Wiping Government Phones
    [17:38] schestowitz[TR]
    [17:38] schestowitz[TR]

Unfortunately, it appears that those records may simply be gone. The congressional Jan. 6 investigation led to revelations last summer that Secret Service texts and data from the days around the attack on the Capitol had been deleted, as had those of top Trump administration DHS officials including Wolf and Ken Cuccinelli. Their government-issued phones had been wiped during a reset when offi [17:38] schestowitz[TR] cials left their jobs, despite the potential presence of public records on those devices.

How Genes from Neanderthals Predispose People to Severe COVID-19
    [18:01] schestowitz[TR]
    [18:01] schestowitz[TR]

Now, Terence Capellini, a Harvard University human evolutionary biologist, and colleagues have systematically evaluated the more than 600 genetic variants in the region. Ultimately, they homed in on three variants that regulate two key chemokine receptor genes that play a role in mediating the cytokine storm that is often involved in the pathogenesis of severe COVID-19. The results, publish [18:01] schestowitz[TR] ed February 10 in eLife, shed new light on the interplay between the host genome and COVID-19 outcomes and help unravel the molecular mechanisms that underpin severe COVID-19.

A DIY peristaltic pump controlled by an Arduino
    [18:02] schestowitz[TR]
    [18:02] schestowitz[TR]

A peristaltic pump works by pushing the liquid through a flexible tube. Inside the pump there are rollers that spin while pushing against the tube, forcing the liquid (or air) along. The rollers only make contact with the outside of the tube, so there is no risk of contamination. To clean the inside of the tube, one only needs to run a solution through the pump. If contamination is a seriou [18:02] schestowitz[TR] s concern, as would be the case for medical equipment, it is easy and affordable to replace the entire tube.

Family Planning Offers the Best Means for Combating Climate Change: An interview with Carter Dillard, Fair Start Movement

Fair Start Movement, an NGO focused on addressing climate and social issues triggered by intergenerational inequality, places family planning at the core of its mission. Policies that support and empower smaller families to share resources and work together create fairer, more sustainable societies. Such societies prioritize children and not just adults, preserve animal and plant sp [18:27] schestowitz[TR] ecies and not just humans, and protect future generations and not just the current one. Carter Dillard, Policy Director of Fair Start Movement (FSM), explains below: [...]
