Moving ZFS filesystems/datasets from one ZFS zpool to another
    [11:00] schestowitz[TR]
    [11:00] schestowitz[TR]

Now that Ive filled up data01, I bought some more SSDs and created another zpool. Today, on this snow-is-anticipated Saturday winter morning, Im going to move some ZFS filesystems/datasets around.

    [11:00] schestowitz[TR]

Side note: I like the term dataset better than filesystem. man zfs talks about datasets, which can be a file system, a volume, a snapshot, or a bookmark. However, usually when I talk about a filesystem, it might be dataset. Its a fine point, but the difference is not usually relevant to what Im doing.

TinyTV 2 and Tiny TV Mini replicate the mid-20th century television aesthetic, but inside, they are powered by Raspberry Pi's powerful RP2040 microcontroller. Both units offer around 8GB of internal storage, which TinyCircuit claims will provide around 10 hours of playback for TinyTV 2 and a whopping 40 hours of video for TinyTV Mini

    A quick hack for Emacs
    [11:04] schestowitz[TR]
    [11:04] schestowitz[TR]

I have a bunch of standard things that I record, but one thing that often ends up happening is that I make references to external bug trackers, be they Jira, Bugzilla, or something else.

    [11:04] schestowitz[TR]

Today I hacked up a simple emacs minor-mode for converting these references to hyperlinks, automatically, via the use of regular expressions.

There's only three weeks left until LibrePlanet 2023. We cannot do this event without our volunteers, who besides providing their invaluable help behind the scenes, also contribute to the great atmosphere. We'd like to extend a huge thank you to all the volunteers who have already signed up to help us organize LibrePlanet 2023. We are touched by how much support we've received so far. Howev [11:16] schestowitz[TR] er, it would be helpful to have more in-person volunteers to fill some important roles.

Canadian Copyright, Fair Dealing and Education, Part Four: The Disappearance of Course Packs
    [11:24] schestowitz[TR]
    [11:24] schestowitz[TR]

The photo that accompanies this post would be unrecognizable to many students today since printed course packs are rarely used. This change is an unsurprising consequence in how materials are acquired and used. As discussed earlier in this series, universities are purchasing fewer print materials, instead focusing on electronic materials that include a permission to use within course materi [11:24] schestowitz[TR] als. Simply put, the move digital course management systems has spelled the end of paper course packs and the increased the value of digital licensing models.

    [11:24] schestowitz[TR]

This decreased reliance and, in some cases, total abandonment of traditional copying is shown in examples from several universities across the country: [...]

The economic and social effect of sealed devices
    [11:31] schestowitz[TR]
    [11:31] schestowitz[TR]

But I cant help but thinking the current generation of devices are partly to blame here. If you raise a generation of people on sealed phones and tablets, with components so tiny and inhospitably designed for repair, you discourage people from doing said repairs, which hampers growth in the skills and attitudes that Mr Ion explains above.

Voice verification is supposed to be a convenient and secure way to log into your bank account over the phone. While that may be true for a lot of people, those with a lot of recordings of their voice online now have something else to worry about: hackers using AI-generated voices to break into their accounts.

Why Justin Trudeau is Wrong About Bill C-18 and Googles Response to Mandated Payments for Links
    [12:31] schestowitz[TR]
    [12:31] schestowitz[TR]

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau waded into Bill C-18 and Google removing links to Canadian news articles in search results as part of a test for a small percentage of users yesterday with the quote cited above. At a press conference in Toronto, Trudeau went out of his way to volunteer that he is surprised by Googles actions, which he thinks is a terrible mistake. If Trudeau was surpr [12:31] schestowitz[TR] ised, then he has not been paying attention, as the possibility of removing links to news articles in search results or social media has been an obvious consequence of a bill that mandates payments for links. But his surprise isnt what is important or requires comment. What does is that Trudeaus comments mislead on several critical issues with Bill C-18.
