[05:44] schestowitz[TR2] 60K eligible for buyouts. Thats 27% of the company. [05:44] schestowitz[TR2] Last May, Microsoft cut 6K. In July, another 9K. I was one of them. [05:44] schestowitz[TR2] Earlier this year, MSFT offered early retirement to employees in their 40s, and 30% accepted. Then it cut another 4,800 jobs. [05:44] schestowitz[TR2] Part of me laughed when I heard the news. Of course they did. But another part of me went, holy fu-k. [05:44] schestowitz[TR2] If one of the worlds most valuable companies is investing billions in its AI future while making tens of thousands of employees question whether they still have a place there, something is seriously wrong. [05:44] schestowitz[TR2] Before I left Microsoft, I was mentoring an early-career engineer who had once considered working there a dream job. Eventually, their attitude shifted to, No thanks. Im not interested. [05:44] schestowitz[TR2] Now employees at both ends of the career ladder seem to be asking the same question: Is staying at Microsoft even worth it anymore? [05:44] schestowitz[TR2] And for those who received a buyout offer today, the decision is no longer theoretical. Its a choice between walking away with a package or staying at a company where the next round of cuts may be just around the corner. [05:44] schestowitz[TR2] " [05:44] schestowitz[TR2] " [05:44] schestowitz[TR2] What I heard so far [05:44] schestowitz[TR2] Voluntary buyouts to approximately 60K employees across the USA, Canada, India, + UK [05:44] schestowitz[TR2] Most employees believe involuntary layoffs will follow (if too few workers accept the voluntary buyouts). No official reduction target has been confirmed. [05:44] schestowitz[TR2] Expected buyout acceptance rates range from 3% to 6% - I've heard people say it can go as high as 10%. [05:44] schestowitz[TR2] An earlier Microsoft buyout program resulted in approximately 2.5K voluntary departures (this was followed by 5K involuntary layoffs). People are split on the accuracy here... [05:44] schestowitz[TR2] Many predict 15K to 20K eventual job cuts. At the edges, some speculate about 50K to 55K. Microsoft is silent on this. [05:44] schestowitz[TR2] Severance packages range from 8 to 39 weeks of pay (depending on tenure and seniority). 6 mo of stock vesting and healthcare benefits. [05:44] schestowitz[TR2] Employees reportedly have until 12/9 to accept the buyout (12/31 will be their final working day. [05:44] schestowitz[TR2] Some employees claim buyout eligibility is determined by organization or team rather than individual performance. Receiving an offer does not necessarily mean an employee is targeted for layoffs. [05:44] schestowitz[TR2] Some believe Microsoft is redirecting payroll spending toward AI infrastructure and data centers, this motivation has not been confirmed. [05:44] schestowitz[TR2] Many disagree about whether rejecting the voluntary buyout will result in worse severance terms during subsequent layoffs. [05:44] schestowitz[TR2] I hear poeple describe a difficult technology job market, particularly in Seattle. [05:44] schestowitz[TR2] H1B employees may be less likely to accept voluntary buyouts because unemployment could jeopardize their immigration status. [05:44] schestowitz[TR2] Some intend to reject substantial buyout packages. [05:44] schestowitz[TR2] Buyout eligibility reportedly varies by org, some teams r fully included, others partially included, and some excluded. [05:44] schestowitz[TR2] Folks are concerns about CSCP in particular. [05:44] schestowitz[TR2] Some commenters allege Microsoft is using voluntary departures to reduce labor costs without announcing mass layoffs, while others view the program as an opportunity for employees who already want to leave. [05:44] schestowitz[TR2] # Biggest Unresolved Questions [05:44] schestowitz[TR2] How many employees does Microsoft actually intend to eliminate? The 60,000 figure represents reported eligibility, not confirmed job cuts. [05:44] schestowitz[TR2] Will involuntary layoffs follow the voluntary buyout program? Multiple employees expect them, but no confirmed plan has emerged. [05:44] schestowitz[TR2] Is Microsoft's primary objective reducing labor costs, restructuring its workforce, or redirecting investment toward AI? [05:44] schestowitz[TR2] # Overall Takeaway [05:44] schestowitz[TR2] The reported 60,000-person voluntary buyout program is the central development. Employees widely speculate that involuntary layoffs will follow, but the number of planned departures, expected acceptance rates, and future severance terms remain unconfirmed. [22:08] schestowitz[TR2] MSFT has made me a multimillionaire. It helped a lot that my wife also worked there. Speaking only for myself, it was a great ride and I cant complain having worked there 19 years. I am 54 and will be taking the offer. Even though I can theoretically look elsewhere I dont want to. I believe the younger folks should have the opportunity I had. [22:08] schestowitz[TR2] Even if they offer 1 wk/year severance and vests my RSU, I am golden. Indias headcount has most likely seen its apex. The substitution of labor has driven Indias headcount growth due mostly to lower labor rates. (IBM actually grew profits by approximately 60 cents on every dollar of labor moved to India). That for the most part has run its course, and automation will now be the next big focus. What does that mean? It means a lot of workers in India will be replaced by AI SW. I expect IBM [22:08] schestowitz[TR2] s total worldwide headcount count to approach 200k by end of 2027- mid 2028. They usually average a 30% + acceptance rate. That would net to a worldwide headcount drop of approx 10%. Pretty much in line with what IBMs RA/PIP initiatives are achieving [22:08] schestowitz[TR2] 1 day ago by Anonymous [22:08] schestowitz[TR2] | 5 reactions (+5/-0) | Reply [22:08] schestowitz[TR2] Post ID: @cs+1m5x6h3j3 [22:08] schestowitz[TR2] +10 [22:08] schestowitz[TR2] In much of Canada, what is left of the last of us is both skeletal and sclerotic. I think that it's too late to offer something so general. I suspect that they really want to make targeted cuts because they can no longer afford the last useful person cashing out. I also suspect that that same dynamic is also in place in the US and other counties that don't start with an I and and with an A. And there is no way they are cutting role [22:08] schestowitz[TR2] s in any countries starting and ending with those letters. [22:08] schestowitz[TR2] The other issue is: how generous is the MSFT option? Because I suspect that the standard RA "offer" is as miserly as legally possible.
