[19:37] MinceR it's awful, but not as awful as fahrenheit [19:38] DaemonFC How is that? [19:39] MinceR Kelvin is preferable though, being an actual unit of measurement, not just some "degree" [19:39] MinceR if that bothers you, use yoctokelvins [19:39] DaemonFC When you talk about degrees Fahrenheit I know that 80 is sort of a hot day and 30 is cold and 0 is damned cold. [19:46] DaemonFC What's much more important than the 12 hour clock is DST, which they should stop using. [19:46] DaemonFC They should go to standard time all year. [19:46] MinceR UTC [19:46] DaemonFC Why? [19:46] XRevan86 DST is irrelevant to 12/24 hour clocks. [19:46] DaemonFC Get a GMT clock if you care what time it is UTC. [19:46] MinceR afaict GMT is only used in the UK [19:47] MinceR why would i get a "clock" for a UK-specific time zone? [19:47] XRevan86 I do like it when Usonians write time when some show airs in local time. [19:47] DaemonFC They make GMT watches and my Casio can track one time zone on the analog clock and another on the digital display. [19:51] XRevan86 DaemonFC: I can tell you something counter-intuitive. [19:51] XRevan86 DaemonFC: 24 hour digital clocks are more compact than 12 hour digital clocks. [19:52] DaemonFC So it has the GMT dial but not the hand. [19:52] DaemonFC :/ [19:52] DaemonFC But they make a GMT watch with a Quartz movement that really works and it's the same price. [19:54] DaemonFC Seiko slips them quartz and automatic movements and tells them not to say where it's coming from. [19:55] MinceR i don't know why anyone would even use a mechanical watch for accurate timekeeping [19:55] DaemonFC The NH35 isn't horrible as far as that goes. [19:55] DaemonFC I've had automatic watches that cost more that lost a hell of a lot more than 2-3 seconds per day. [19:56] DaemonFC This is very good for not being calibrated by anyone and the factory just cranking them out. [19:56] DaemonFC If you had a human sitting there with a calibrating system, they might be able to get it down to 1-2 seconds a day. [21:35] DaemonFC Then they decide that they obviously have a nutcase on their hands and they don't want that in their jail because this guy could be trouble, and they let you go. [21:35] DaemonFC But you also haven't told them anything that could be perceived as a threat. [21:40] DaemonFC "You see, officer, coffee brewing isn't exactly a science, but there are parts of it that are quite scientific and absolutely reproducible. Time, temperature, measurement, cleanliness to control for off-taste, and the general quality of the input materials, including the water. Some people use purified water but I find that to be too low on the pH scale for my taste. I recommend using a good carbon block filter to remove the nastier tasting [21:40] DaemonFC contaminants and the stuff that the government doesn't care that it's poisoning us with because bladder cancer at 82 finishes off those Social Security checks and cop pensions anyway, and leave minerals. You can get rid of those later anyway with a good descaling solution every 100 cycles or so.". [21:41] DaemonFC "When we get to the less scientific parts, we obviously can't control exactly how each batch of coffee will come out due to weather and soil conditions at the growing sites, things like that, but we can speak in terms of averages and overall human taste profile factors within a given confidence interval." [21:43] DaemonFC "This can get rather subjective, but like psychoacoustic research, we can gather an overall preference profile for the "average" human which accounts for the overall human perception level. See, we all perceive things differently. What you like to eat might make me barf, and vice versa. I might hear things that drive me crazy while I'm trying to sleep that you can't hear at all. It's all relatives man, just like they say in Kentucky." [21:47] DaemonFC MinceR, I'm considering getting another Pro Diver. Quartz Seiko movement. [21:47] DaemonFC Amazon is closing them out. [21:47] DaemonFC Red. 43 mm case. [21:48] DaemonFC For the cost of getting Seiko movements in Seiko watches, you could buy five Invictas with the same stuff in them by that point. Have a watch for every occasion. [21:48] DaemonFC schestowitz[TR2], That G Shock uses a weird battery. [21:48] DaemonFC It's not even listed at Batteries Plus. [21:49] DaemonFC They usually charge $10 or $15 to change the battery for you. It's not horrific. The batteries themselves at like $5-8 depending on the one you need. [21:50] DaemonFC MinceR, The analog dials are worse of course by battery life. [21:51] MinceR and readability [21:51] MinceR and reliability [21:51] DaemonFC You're far better off with a solar watch or an automatic if you care about not having to change out the battery a lot and hoping it's still waterproof. [21:51] DaemonFC You get maybe 3-5 years on a battery in an analog quartz and 10+ on a digital quartz. [21:51] DaemonFC But analog looks a lot cooler, obviously. [21:52] DaemonFC So if you like a watch that also looks good on you, you get an analog dial, which is why they still outsell digital watches. [21:52] DaemonFC But the demand is close between the two. [21:52] MinceR no, it looks a lot less cool [21:53] DaemonFC You can easily look and see the time immediately on a digital, but it doesn't pair well with a suit or anything. [21:53] MinceR good [21:53] MinceR i don't want to wear a suit either [21:53] MinceR they're even less practical than analog mechanical watches [21:55] DaemonFC Mechanicals will never need a battery. [22:52] DaemonFC Some people win the lottery with those odds. I get Ellis. [22:52] DaemonFC See how that goes. [22:54] DaemonFC The way Hank kills Tuco in the gunfight is sort of stupid. [22:54] DaemonFC Fitting though, I guess. [22:54] DaemonFC If Tuco was smarter, he'd realize that Hank only probably had 2-3 magazines for his Glock since he wasn't expecting a firefight when he got out there (he came alone). [22:56] DaemonFC That Tuco had an M16 with several extended magazines (so hundreds of bullets even after he wasted some on the cows earlier), armor piercing bullets, and automatic selector. [22:56] DaemonFC He was concealed behind Pinkman's car and Hank had already wasted almost two dozen rounds already and was forced to wait for a clear shot. [22:57] DaemonFC I would have switched to three round burst and kept shooting, through the busted out frame of the rear window, at Hank. [22:57] DaemonFC Eventually you probably get lucky but you've got him pinned and he might do something stupid and waste his remaining shots. [22:58] DaemonFC Tuco had the more easily defensible position and the superior firepower, and still lost, because he just stood up. Hank was hiding behind a car door on an SUV, Tuco was behind a low rider with a big block V8 engine. [22:59] DaemonFC A fitting end for Tuco, I guess, because he was just so stupid and too high to think that he blew all of those advantages. [23:04] DaemonFC Nuclear weapons WORK in space, sure, but they wouldn't be ideal for a number of reasons. [23:05] DaemonFC BSG survives intact despite a lot of these damned things going off with high yield warheads because nukes aren't very dangerous to something like Galactica. Lots of armor and radiation shielding. [23:05] DaemonFC Most of the energy would be EMF, heat, and hard radiation. And they were shielded for all of this. [23:06] MinceR DaemonFC: doesn't matter, galactica had GAWD on its side :> [23:06] DaemonFC Nuclear weapons are highly destructive in Earth-like atmospheres (potentially others) because of the pressure wave. [23:09] DaemonFC MinceR, One reason I like the Moccamaster, is because they've kept computers out of it. [23:09] DaemonFC It's pretty much all 60s tech in there. [23:13] DaemonFC I can understand why people bought this things back then. [23:14] DaemonFC The middle clas could afford one, they were better than other brands at the time, they didn't pull this "I only get two of these in per year and you have to court me like you're trying to have sex with a straight up 10 in order to get the right to pay me $12,000, potentially, 3 years from now." over a watch.
