[23:33] DaemonFC mjg59_ accidentally pointed out the things I've been saying all along. [23:33] DaemonFC Including don't trust your important data to Windows because even if malware doesn't hose it, Bitlocker will act up eventually. [23:34] *techuser has quit (Ping timeout: 2m30s) [23:34] *phanes checks his luks encrypted volumes [23:34] *phanes laughs at the mortals and their plight [23:34] DaemonFC It's absolutely unforgivable that PC OEMs are allowed to push broken UEFI updates that panic Bitlocker and delete part of the Windows bootloader. [23:35] DaemonFC They're not safe to install. They're not safe to not install. What do you do? [23:36] DaemonFC I hear that if you don't risk everything on your laptop and install one occasionally, eventually you're not allowed to update Windows anymore and it'll complain at you to update your UEFI firmware. [23:37] DaemonFC If you're required to update it, then there should be a requirement that it installs properly every time and that Windows knows what the fuck is going on instead of locking you out of your encrypted volume. [23:37] mjg59_ The documented process for firmware updates under Windows involves the tooling temporarily removing the Bitlocker PCR7 sealing, performing the update, and re-sealing it to the new values [23:38] DaemonFC In most cases, installing a firmware update is more trouble than it's worth because there will just be another one every month with another pile of CVEs and it's a terrible risk of fucking up your motherboard and data loss each time you do it. [23:38] DaemonFC The documented process for firmware updates under Windows involves the tooling temporarily removing the Bitlocker PCR7 sealing, performing the update, and re-sealing it to the new values [23:38] ulf pcr7 sealing, sounds smart [23:38] MinceR also, it's fucking around with a codebase that is way too large [23:38] DaemonFC Obviously the Lenovo March 2021 update for the Thinkbook 15 ITL Gen2 didn't do that and nobody at Lenovo actually tested it. [23:38] MinceR and can brick your "computer" [23:39] *techuser (~techuser@bsgdwgkyty4d4.irc) has joined #techrights [23:39] MinceR afaict every instance of UEFI is chock full of bugs and is a disaster waiting to happen [23:39] DaemonFC Even ten years later, it's hardly any better than it was. [23:40] MinceR and ever so helpfully intHell ended the one way one could sort of circumvent some of that broken madness and prevent the booted OS from fucking with it, by removing CSM [23:40] ulf CSM? was the legacy BIOS support? [23:40] DaemonFC Yeah. [23:41] ulf oh... then intel cannot boot my amd64.iso anymore [23:41] MinceR "legacy" boot [23:41] DaemonFC The CSM was basically the one way to run it where the OS couldn't poke around and fuck something up using native UEFI interfaces. [23:41] MinceR "Compatibility Support Module" [23:42] MinceR also the one way to run it so that the boot firmware is actually a lot less likely to just freeze when it sees your efivars and never boot or even let you enter setup ever again [23:42] *techuser has quit (Ping timeout: 2m30s) [23:43] DaemonFC openSUSE had a lot of documentation to the effect of "We can do this with UEFI, but we don't because many implementations are too broken to trust.". [23:43] DaemonFC You can tell they don't like it. [23:43] MinceR i guess suse got rid of those troublesome people that dared not to like UEFI since then [23:43] DaemonFC You almost have to just figure out what's the minimal amount of interaction you can have with it and hope that doesn't fuck it up. [23:43] MinceR in the age of "modern", such sinful thoughts are not tolerated anymore [23:44] ulf the minimal interaction is this: removing all support for UEFI from kernel and boot loader [23:44] *techuser (~techuser@k86dad7ibinds.irc) has joined #techrights [23:44] MinceR then it won't boot at all [23:44] MinceR on alleged "computers" with no CSM [23:44] ulf removed support for uefi from uboot-loader too... it's simply not required for anything [23:45] ulf GRUB is weird too, prefer syslinux/isolinux still [23:45] DaemonFC mjg59_ made another good point by mistake. Lenovo (presumably other OEMs) deal with Secure Boot by adding their own certificate. Nobody audits the stuff that gets signed with those certificates. So all you need to do is run something that was signed by an OEM (which have FAMOUSLY AWESOME SECURITY PRACTICES.....LOL) and exploit a vulnerability in it. [23:46] ulf i don't trust this type of software, GRUB, UEFI all this [23:46] DaemonFC They build backdoors into it for themselves and then sign off on their own poorly written programs. [23:47] DaemonFC Nobody is monitoring what they do with it. The whole "Secure Boot" thing is a sham. [23:47] MinceR MICROS~1 also build backdoors in their own shit [23:47] DaemonFC Because the user can't delete the certificates it comes with and then put in ones they actually trust. [23:47] MinceR like silently elevating in UAC if your executable is named in a particular way [23:47] DaemonFC MinceR, There's malware that includes the Windows 7 calculator because of that. [23:47] DaemonFC I posted on my old blog that eventually that would happen. [23:47] DaemonFC In 2009! [23:47] MinceR that's the sort of "security" uefi and "secure boot" were "engineered" to lock you into [23:48] DaemonFC I not only nailed it, but I think I said it was coming at least several years before anyone did that. [23:48] DaemonFC Yes, the "silent elevations" to make the "annoying security prompts" go away. [23:49] ulf good news is, in worst case, i could live with a Raspi Zero W [23:49] MinceR you could live with ThreadX? [23:49] MinceR and "raspberry os" with additional MICROS~1 malware? [23:49] ulf i don't want it, at least it wouldn't lock out my firmware.img being booted [23:49] MinceR as far as you know [23:50] ulf i created my own distribution without any support for UEFI [23:50] MinceR until some website exploits some buggy code and/or backdoor planted in it [23:50] MinceR this whole industry is just shit built on top of shit, with shit practices, and with sociopaths in charge of most of it [23:51] MinceR and if you try to compete with it, they destroy you [23:51] ulf just saying, a raspi with 512MiB RAM sufficed for me, can build everything from source with it... still working on tinycc integration [23:51] ulf because, in comparison to the GNU/FSF toolchain, it's fast [23:51] MinceR at this point, the best thing i can expect is some natural catastrophe that quickly and painlessly wipes out all human life [23:51] MinceR humans are incapable of anything better [23:52] MinceR a raspi with 512 MB RAM sufficed for me to see that even terminal emulators can be painfully slow [23:52] MinceR yay. [23:52] MinceR and i ended up using konsole because it was somewhat less painfully slow than urxvt and libvte [23:53] ulf well, no wonder the terminal emulator is slow, if it's build upon GNU/FSF software [23:54] MinceR good luck getting anything other than GNU/Linux and systemd/Linux to run on it [23:55] MinceR at least the old ones had more than just one Linux distro supporting them [23:56] ulf simply didn't have time yet, to tailor some firmware for raspberry [23:56] MinceR or the interest [23:57] MinceR and of course the raspberry pi foundation doesn't care anymore [23:57] MinceR they don't even care not to ship another NSA backdoor in their distro [23:57] MinceR or to set things up so that APT doesn't phone home to MICROS~1 every time you do an update [23:57] MinceR then again, that latter thing is just pure malice [23:58] ulf and i had seen, the zero w model i would test, will remain in production until 2026 [23:58] MinceR if they weren't malicious about it, the sources.list.d file would have just been installed from a package, and you could remove it [23:58] MinceR they didn't like that, so they wrote it from a script, every time you remove it [23:58] ulf i won't use any GNOMEified Debian ever [23:59] MinceR i'm not sure how things would be different if this industry openly and deliberately did everything in their power to make users miserable and exert as much control over them as possible
