[00:44] DaemonFC That's only _illegal_ in a few states here. [00:45] DaemonFC It shows questionable judgment, but the criminal system wouldn't do anything about it in like 47 states. [00:46] MinceR https://www.smbc-comics.com/comic/culture-2 [00:46] DaemonFC 16 is legal in Indiana. [00:46] -TechrightsBot-tr/#techrights-www.smbc-comics.com | Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal - Culture [00:47] DaemonFC About the worst they can do to you for it is figure out a catch all like contributing to the delinquency of a minor. [00:47] samiamsam it's not dilinquency [00:47] mib_v43oqq age of consent is not that same as legal age [00:47] DaemonFC You'd have to pay a fine to the court or something. [00:48] mib_v43oqq consent means it's statutory rape if it was consensual [00:48] mib_v43oqq age of consent basically allows teens to have sex with each other [00:48] DaemonFC Right, many of those states can toss some misdemeanor at you. [00:48] DaemonFC But the act itself is legal. [00:49] mib_v43oqq and individuals over 18 that are within a certain age range of a minor [00:49] DaemonFC Laws make very little sense if you try to think of them as "Someone wrote down laws, and they were trying to make sense.". [00:49] samiamsam mib_v43oqq: that varies by jurisdiction [00:49] DaemonFC Like in Illinois, you can have sex with a 17 year old, but the state can charge you with traveling to meet a minor. [00:49] DaemonFC Maybe. [00:49] DaemonFC It sounds ridiculous, right? [00:50] samiamsam Traveling to meet a minor involves going any distance for the purpose of engaging in sexual battery, lewd or lascivious offenses, child abuse, or other forms of [00:50] samiamsam illegal sexual conduct with a child after using email, the internet, or any electronic device to lure, solicit, or seduce them. [00:51] DaemonFC The state has to prove three things. That there was actually a minor (can't just be a police trap), that you traveled some distance with the primary purpose of meeting them for sex, and that you used some form of transportation to do it and they can prove you did. [00:51] samiamsam and this: [00:51] samiamsam For the purpose of engaging in any sex act : the purpose of the travel must be in order to complete or commit a sexual act defined in Section 2 of the Sex [00:51] samiamsam Offender Registration Act or an unlawful sexual act. This element can be difficult to prove, but the prosecution is permitted to prove this element by [00:51] samiamsam circumstantial evidence. Facebook messages or voicemails wherein the defendant indicates to the child or to another that he or she intends to commit an unlawful [00:51] samiamsam sexual act against the child when he or she meets him or her will satisfy this element, as would police discovering condoms, lubricants, or other sexual-related [00:51] samiamsam items in the defendants bags or car. [00:51] samiamsam [00:51] DaemonFC So in other words, unless you leave a huge evidence trail behind, they have a bit of a hill to climb over a misdemeanor. [00:51] DaemonFC And it's Illinois, so there's a bazillion people worse than you they have to deal with. [00:51] samiamsam there has to be an underlying sex crime offense [00:52] DaemonFC It may just get thrown out for want of prosecution. [00:52] DaemonFC That's actually how I beat my traffic ticket. [00:52] samiamsam you don't mention the most important criterion [00:52] DaemonFC The state gave up because it had easier victims to extort more money from, and nobody showed up to testify against me. [00:53] DaemonFC I mean, who doesn't fight every ticket they get? I've only ever had the one, but still. [00:53] DaemonFC If you pay it, your odds of beating it are 0.0%, you pay the fine, your insurance company pummels you. [00:54] DaemonFC You go to court, you probably lose, but not necessarily. [00:54] mib_v43oqq I don't think this is an argument anyone should want to win. [00:54] DaemonFC "commit a sexual act defined in Section 2 of the Sex [00:54] DaemonFC Offender Registration Act" [00:55] DaemonFC There's a number of ways that this could apply to a 17 year old. [00:55] DaemonFC If you were their teacher or a police officer, or their priest. [00:55] DaemonFC They were incapable of consent. [00:55] DaemonFC Or, like, you know, if they just tell the cops "No, I didn't consent. This nutcase just came over and wanted sex!". [00:56] DaemonFC It's always dangerous to try to have sex with anyone though. [00:56] samiamsam well you were talking about the traveling offense as if it could be charged in the absense of any underlying sex offense [00:56] DaemonFC There's dangers of these apps that Garrett was talking about. [00:56] DaemonFC First they spy on you. People even tell them their HIV status! [00:56] DaemonFC To be shared with ad networks! [00:56] DaemonFC Then the person could show up and rob or kill you. [00:57] DaemonFC Men are idiots though. Men are pigs. [00:58] DaemonFC The fact that there is a two-tier system for people like Gates and Epstein was what I was trying to point out though. [00:59] DaemonFC Everyone else, even if they are a perv, if they're smart, they'll go "Look, this isn't worth what they'll do to me.". [00:59] DaemonFC But when you're rich, it's a problem of money. [00:59] DaemonFC How much do you pay the court to make it go away? How much bribery? How much do you lose in the divorce? ● Oct 14 [01:00] DaemonFC I've (unsolicited) had teenagers hitting on me before. It's actually come up a couple of times. [01:00] DaemonFC And I said, something like "No thank you. I would get in a lot of trouble. Have a nice day though.". [01:02] DaemonFC Alcoholics drive drunk a lot before they get caught and forced into rehab. Part of MRT goes something like "If I'm not in control of my actions, the results of my actions will control me." which is how they got caught. [01:02] DaemonFC Usually, they didn't get caught, they kept doing it, they got caught. [01:04] DaemonFC Mandy found a bunch of empty jewelry boxes today while he was stocking shelves at the store. [01:04] DaemonFC Someone decided, "Hey, if the cops show up and see me stuffing this in my bra, I can just pull out the race card.". [01:04] DaemonFC That's what happens when you teach some people they're above the rules. [01:06] DaemonFC God (if there is such a thing) help you if you end up in court, you're white, you're poor, and they accuse you of anything too bad. [01:06] DaemonFC Because nobody is going to bail you out. Nobody is going to burn down the entire city and loot and shoot at cops because they arrested you. [01:06] DaemonFC Nobody is coming to help. [01:07] DaemonFC And the result is the police don't even try when they see any other kind of person anymore. [01:07] DaemonFC Which is why they took one look at them, one look at me, and handed me the ticket. [01:08] DaemonFC But I put on my big boy pants and went to court like a respectable person would do. [01:09] DaemonFC schestowitz-TR, I was laughing at YouTube today, because someone posted the last video with Jerry Doyle before he died and he was making some good points. [01:10] *swaggboi has quit (Quit: C-x C-c) [01:10] DaemonFC He said he got on CNN after the trouble in Ferguson, Missouri, and they asked what he thought they needed, and he said "Some suitcases.". [01:12] DaemonFC He said after Katrina chased everyone out of New Orleans, some ended up in other places, and then they said "Okay, everything's fine. [01:26] DaemonFC Illinois is a high tax shithole. [01:27] DaemonFC It's just that some of it is a high tax shithole where there is additionally no jobs and a lot of crime. [01:27] DaemonFC And that this encompasses a majority of the state. [01:27] samiamsam well let's say you've proved that illinois contains at least one high crime area [01:27] samiamsam that hardly even addresses the point that high taxes reflect more opportunity [01:27] DaemonFC More than one! [01:28] samiamsam high tax rates also reflect lower crime rates overall [01:28] DaemonFC And so all of the employers leave, and then the taxes on your house go up and you have no job. [01:29] DaemonFC So you abandon the house, file bankruptcy, and flee the state. [01:30] samiamsam the thing is, if you look just at the usa, the tax rate is always low [01:30] samiamsam and the crime rate is always high [01:30] samiamsam and the opportunities are always mediocre [01:30] samiamsam compared to any high tax nation [01:31] DaemonFC Well, like I told my sister-in-law. [05:39] *leah (~leah@wrh2nipuzrd3y.irc) has joined #techrights [05:39] DaemonFC Mac OS 9 was "Classic". [05:40] DaemonFC It had a lot of fundamental problems at the core of the OS, but they replaced it with something that was also quite bad, which carried over a lot of their mistakes and junk from Classic in order to maintain some compatibility. [05:40] DaemonFC And the new GUI in OS X was just godawful. [05:41] DaemonFC My uncle, Stanley, didn't upgrade his Mac to OS X and said it was because half the monitor was the dock and none of the programs he liked worked on it. [05:43] DaemonFC OS X had a Classic environment which was basically an entire copy of the core pieces of OS 9 with a PowerPC emulator. [05:43] DaemonFC But it was very slow, and reports of its compatibility with Classic apps were exaggerated. [05:44] DaemonFC Ironically, it wasn't slow when OS X was working on the Power architecture. It just wasn't fully compatible. [05:44] DaemonFC Apple has this long history of like, semi-compatibility and emulators. [05:45] DaemonFC They never give anyone who likes their software and wants to keep it something that works well, and they always end up yanking it out at some point. [05:45] DaemonFC So every x86 application that runs now will eventually not work. [05:46] DaemonFC It'll be just like that "upgrade" where PowerPC apps didn't launch and it says "This application is no longer compatible. Contact the vendor." and the vendor went out of business 10 years ago. [05:46] DaemonFC I was thinking about what Stallman said about game engines and how those binaries for those older Fallout games are quite old. [05:47] DaemonFC The only reason they still work is because of emulators and hackery. [05:47] DaemonFC And it's far from certain that they always will. [05:49] DaemonFC I mean the first one is safer than the Windows ones because they're for DOS, and we have good DOS emulators and it can just work in those forever. [05:49] DaemonFC The second one is probably safe because DOSBOX-X can run Windows 95, and Windows 95 can run Fallout 2. [05:50] DaemonFC I mean, it seems insane going out and finding an entire copy of Windows 95 to stick in a DOS emulator to play one game, but why not? [05:50] DaemonFC An entire OS from 1995 is very smell by today's standards. Firefox is bigger, even before it creates a profile. [05:50] DaemonFC *small [05:51] DaemonFC Classic gaming is just better because it's worse in many cases. [05:51] DaemonFC There is none of this your computer is too slow crap.
