oiaohmIts partly our tax system.May 15 06:05
oiaohmRemember in Australia you are a business there are a stack of ways to claim the cost of a computer with Windows against your tax return.May 15 06:07
oiaohmschestowitz: https://www.etax.com.au/computer-as-a-tax-deduction/   Good fun by Australian tax system a computer only has a 4 year life span before you will be replacing it.May 15 06:09
-TechrightsBot-tr/#techrights-www.etax.com.au | Computer as a Tax Deduction: Can you claim this on your return?May 15 06:09
oiaohmschestowitz: there is kind of  hidden financial incentive.    People using Linux are more likely to use their computers for 10 years than 4.   So pushing Linux might change the deprecation in tax.   Lets say the tax office decides computers have a 10 year life instead of the 4 this alters the claim back speed.    May 15 06:13
oiaohmschestowitz: all those reporting in Australia will be claiming their computers back on their Tax.May 15 06:16
DaemonFC[m]Didn't Australia have a federal tax software program that required windows?May 15 06:19
oiaohmYepMay 15 06:23
oiaohmAnd to use it under OS X and Linux you could claim a copy of windows and vmware.May 15 06:23
oiaohmThat was for a instant tax writeoff.May 15 06:25
oiaohmOf course they have deprecated that now for web based software.May 15 06:26
oiaohmThat at first required internet explorer.May 15 06:26

DaemonFC[m]Burr already resigned from the Senate Intelligence Committee.May 15 18:31
DaemonFC[m]Once you start losing your Committee assignments, it usually means its weeks or months before you are pressured into resigning from Congress too.May 15 18:31
DaemonFC[m]They make it look like he stepped down voluntarily, but no Senator is going to voluntarily give up a plum Committee assignment. There's most of the job of being a Senator. He can still vote on legislation, but they might strip him of that too if the FBI investigation goes on further.May 15 18:32
DaemonFC[m]I can't believe that anyone would run billions of dollars worth of campaigning to get in the Senate and stay there and then risk losing their seat over some stock trades worth a couple million.May 15 18:53
DaemonFC[m]OMG, there's so many laws that this violates, and while they're investigating you, they might find something else, or you might accidentally make a false statement while you're talking to them.May 15 18:54
DaemonFC[m]Which is why you shouldn't talk to them. Ask Martha Stewart.May 15 18:54
DaemonFC[m]If she had gone in there and not said anything.... The insider trading fell through for lack of evidence, but they turned around and hit her with making false statements and she went to prison for a couple of years on that.May 15 18:55
DaemonFC[m]When the investigation starts, the prosecutor will get you with anything they can. If they get frustrated because what they're investigating you for falls through, they'll turn to something else.May 15 18:56
DaemonFC[m]Anything involving a legal proceeding should be taken with the utmost seriousness. May 15 19:00
DaemonFC[m]It absolutely can and will turn into a witch hunt.May 15 19:00
DaemonFC[m]Prosecutors sometimes pursue weak cases on serious charges in order to try extracting a plea deal. Then if you refuse they drop it because they don't want to spend a lot of time on a losing case.May 15 19:02
DaemonFC[m]A good defense lawyer should be able to look at what they have and figure out if it's a strong case against you or not.May 15 19:02
DaemonFC[m]I erred on the side of living to fight another day.May 15 19:04
DaemonFC[m]The plea deal involved some small punishment and a dismissed Disorderly Conduct as a petty misdemeanor, and I can expunge the court records in a couple more years.May 15 19:06
DaemonFC[m]Legally, it will be like it never happened.May 15 19:06
DaemonFC[m]So it was victory to slow way.May 15 19:06
DaemonFC[m]I'll have a bankruptcy on my credit report for 10 years. So that sucks, but it's not the end of the world.May 15 19:06

DaemonFC[m]There is a danger in bankruptcy that some things will survive and never be discharged, but the risk for most people is minimal unless they've acted egregiously. May 15 20:15
DaemonFC[m]I also learned why it's called "Petition for Voluntary Bankruptcy under 11 USC Chapter 7".May 15 20:16
DaemonFC[m]Creditors can petition a bankruptcy court to force a business or an individual into bankruptcy involuntarily, but it's very rare for them to initiate it against a business, and even more rare against an individual.May 15 20:16
DaemonFC[m]Basically, they want to be paid and they might be able to force someone who has assets but isn't paying them into liquidation as a way to get the trustee to hand over their money by force.May 15 20:17
DaemonFC[m]It's another way they can pursue things instead of a lawsuit against you resulting in a judgment they might not be able to enforce.May 15 20:17
DaemonFC[m]It's rarely used because judgments are easier to obtain and the first to go after you gets your assets unless you initiate a Chapter 7, and there's a danger in that for them too.May 15 20:18
DaemonFC[m]If you owe a bunch of people money and one of them spends thousands of dollars suing you, and ends up getting something, and you initiate bankruptcy to make it stop, the Trustee will claw back what they took from you and redistribute it to your other creditors.May 15 20:19

DaemonFC[m]I told my bankruptcy attorney that I had a laptop from 2016. She said, "Oh they wouldn't get anything for it so they wouldn't take it from you.".May 15 21:42
DaemonFC[m]I said, "Well, the great thing about using Linux is that it'll still work fine for me for another 6 or 8 years, probably. They should put 'Use Linux and keep your existing computer working longer.' in the bankruptcy course so people don't have to buy a new laptop every 2-3 years. The only problem the laptop has given me is that at 4 years old I had to swap the battery out for $38.".May 15 21:42
DaemonFC[m]Using Linux would save people over $2,500 in 10 years.May 15 21:42
DaemonFC[m]That's way more than buying store brand mustard.May 15 21:42
XRevan8617.01.0 was released in February, 18.06.0 was released in July, 19.07.0 was released in JanuaryMay 15 21:42
XRevan86A perfect "expectation vs. reality"May 15 21:42
DaemonFC[m]Also, Android phones cost less, do more, and you can usually get away with using them for three times longer than Apple supports an iPhone, because when your Android doesn't get firmware updates, Google still does update the Play store and APIs, so new apps keep working for years!May 15 21:43
DaemonFC[m]You can get a top of the line Google Pixel for $800, which is half the price of the mainline iPhone, and while the iPhone _may_ work for 4-5 years, before Apple cuts off apps entirely, it probably won't.May 15 21:46
DaemonFC[m]Many just break because of poor build quality, and many don't even last 2 years, which is why they sell AppleCare.May 15 21:46
