DaemonFC[m]It's still maintained, but at this point is what it is as far as not being able to push MP3 much further as far as sound quality.Feb 16 05:27
DaemonFC[m]Opus 1.3.1 is about the same quality at 40% lower file size.Feb 16 05:27
DaemonFC[m]There's not much reason to go above 128k with Opus. You can, but you won't get drastically better results Feb 16 05:29
DaemonFC[m]256k AAC is insane. I don't know why iTunes files did it.Feb 16 05:30
DaemonFC[m]Above ~192k (Lame -V2), I can't abx MP3 beyond guessing. Feb 16 05:31
DaemonFC[m]I sort of approached Opus not really believing it could do much better than MP3 and ended up settling with 128k after lots of sanity checking.Feb 16 05:32
DaemonFC[m]Everyone and their mother said they had something that was twice as good as MP3 over the years and the improvement was so small that it wasn't worth bothering with, or you tried it and it was actually worse, lik WMA.Feb 16 05:33
oiaohmOpus took a lot of alterations in method to get where it is.Feb 16 05:45
oiaohmDaemonFC[m]: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codec_2   most of the research on the method here is to get bits per second lower.   But Codec 2 does display the possibility that as good as Opus at lower file size maybe possible.Feb 16 05:47

DaemonFC[m]I got around to crunching 135.5 GB of FLAC -8 down to 20.8 GB of Opus @ 128k.Feb 16 19:45
DaemonFC[m]The default setting of 96k Opus is too low. It's close, but for another small bump, you can get something that sounds indistinguishable from the CD to me on my MDR-7506 Sony headphones.Feb 16 19:46
DaemonFC[m]160k seems to be wasted bits.Feb 16 19:47
DaemonFC[m]The sweet spot appears to be 128k as a general rule.Feb 16 19:47
DaemonFC[m]It's hard to do tuning and tests higher than a bitrate where a codec reaches transparency for obvious reasons.Feb 16 19:47
DaemonFC[m]160k AoTuv Vorbis seems to be the point where it's transparent, around 192k for Xiph.org libvorbis, and Apple AAC.Feb 16 19:48
DaemonFC[m]Apple AAC and Xiph.org libvorbis only appear to be a small iimprovement over LAME MP3, which appears to be ideal around -V1 (224k), and Musepack does very well for a subband codec, around 192k.Feb 16 19:50
DaemonFC[m]The big problem with Apple AAC is that the encoder is proprietary, and while you never need to use it again to play the files, nobody else has invested much effort into making a good AAC encoder.Feb 16 19:51
DaemonFC[m]In my testing, fdk-aac comes close to Apple for quality though.Feb 16 19:51

DaemonFC[m]fdk-aac is FOSS, but with the important notice in the license that nobody grants you any patents.Feb 16 19:52
DaemonFC[m]Fedora has a version that only does LC-AAC, which is public domain now.Feb 16 19:52
DaemonFC[m]There's no reason to use AAC. The only case where you may need it for mobile phone compatibility is an iPhone, and you can't sync those with Linux or even a standard cable, or Windows without software from Apple.Feb 16 19:53
DaemonFC[m]And even if you get the files over, you can't use an SD card, so you wouldn't have sufficient space on the phone anyway.Feb 16 19:53
DaemonFC[m]Apple's checkered history of making Windows software has been full of hilarious things like making extremely bloated stuff that crashes all the time and often damages Windows itself or opens even more security holes.Feb 16 19:54
DaemonFC[m]iPhones are just dumb terminals for Clown Computing.Feb 16 19:58
DaemonFC[m]To make sure that nobody gets the funny idea of using 64k Opus to get around storage problems on the iPhone, Apple doesn't support them in their native container.Feb 16 19:59
DaemonFC[m]You'd need to put them in a CAF container.Feb 16 19:59
DaemonFC[m]At 64k, there's something "off" about the sound quality in Opus, but it's not downright unpleasant like MP3 or AAC are.Feb 16 20:00
DaemonFC[m]And you can store over 740 hours of music in about 11 GB.Feb 16 20:00
DaemonFC[m]Opus is also odd in that it doesn't have any particular genre of music where there are a huge number of outright FAILs, but I suspect this is because of that tonal estimation thing introduced back in 1.1.Feb 16 20:03

XRevan86> The scandal started on January 7, when television and radio host Vladimir Solovyov reposted a glowing review of his 2013 short film about Mussolini. The review, written by publicist Igor Molotov, calls Mussolini a “brilliant man” who “gave the world a third way that Russia is partly traveling today.”Feb 16 23:04

DaemonFC[m]I hear Trump is wasting our money on reviving the DoJ porn investigations.Feb 16 23:13
XRevan86But Vladimir Solovyov will probably get out of it, yes.Feb 16 23:13
DaemonFC[m]Bush threw a bone to evangelicals by spending $5 million a year on the DoJ looking for porn on sites that fell under "simulated child pornography" whatever that is.Feb 16 23:13
DaemonFC[m]What the law says is basically if you dress up an 18 year old that looks 14 in a school uniform and film porn, then you're guilty.Feb 16 23:14
DaemonFC[m]So it's one of those "You didn't break the law, but here's a felony anyway." laws.Feb 16 23:14
DaemonFC[m]In theory, they could go after a lot of subreddits with that one, but they don't.Feb 16 23:15

DaemonFC[m]So gay porn is legal in Russia.Feb 16 23:19
XRevan86DaemonFC[m]: There's no special case.Feb 16 23:20
DaemonFC[m]Porn in general is legal in the US, but states can still charge you with a crime for a few things related to otherwise legal porn.Feb 16 23:20
DaemonFC[m]Selling it to minors, showing it to a minor, displaying it in public. Those might be against state laws.Feb 16 23:20
XRevan86IIRC, it's illegal to make porn.Feb 16 23:21

DaemonFC[m]Anyway, change of subject.... I saw Phoronix posting about that new 64 core + SMT AMD processor.Feb 16 23:31
DaemonFC[m]I'm shocked to see that Windows 10 still has problems scaling past 32 threads.Feb 16 23:32
XRevan86DaemonFC[m]: Another thing is that this law focuses on minors ("think of the children!"), and by Russian law all porn has not to be accessible for the underaged.Feb 16 23:32
DaemonFC[m]It can run 128, but by that time throughput is so bad that compared to Linux, you're effectively losing 1/4th of the CPU's peak throughput.Feb 16 23:32
XRevan86DaemonFC[m]: So again, no special case required even by their logic.Feb 16 23:33
