[03:02] DaemonFC[m] He asked why I back up my files to hard drives still. [03:03] DaemonFC[m] You know, it's not only just the fact that Microsoft clown stuff crashes and leaves people "unproductive" for hours on end. [03:03] DaemonFC[m] If you get a bad thunderstorm or snowstorm or high winds, it could knock out your internet service for who knows how long. [03:04] DaemonFC[m] Then you can't even open a document. [03:04] schestowitz__ https://github.com/flathub/org.signal.Signal/issues/122 [03:04] -TechrightsBot-tr/#techrights-Unable to allocate instance id Issue #122 flathub/org.signal.Signal GitHub [03:04] schestowitz__ "Never mind, issue resolved when PC was rebooted." [03:06] mjg59 schestowitz__: Most of the bugs you're pointing at there involve flatpak letting the user know that their session is misconfigured (something that's largely outside flatpak's control) [03:07] mjg59 When installing stuff as a user, flatpak can't put .desktop files in the system-wide locations because it doesn't have permissions to do so [03:07] DaemonFC[m] Bloat, lack of integration, maddeningly unhelpful error messages. [03:07] mjg59 If the environment hasn't set XDG_DATA_DIRS to include something in the user home directory, what's it meant to do? [03:07] DaemonFC[m] These do not improve the situation. [03:08] mjg59 In this case it's extremely clear about what the problem is and what the consequences will be? [03:08] DaemonFC[m] It's kind of unfortunate that we have this regression called Flatpak instead of making actual packages that install correctly and work with the system the user is running. [03:09] DaemonFC[m] Those were what happened 10-15 years ago when people were nuts and just wanted the computer to work. [03:10] DaemonFC[m] Instead we have these things that, if you can get them to install at all, the themes are wrong, it'll have trouble accessing various resources of the system, etc. It's constantly malfunctioning on some level. [03:10] DaemonFC[m] And the answer is that it's great and you need more of it. [03:12] DaemonFC[m] Most of the people making the software have no idea or not a care in the world as to how the people using it want it to function. It would really take a different kind of person to think highly of Flatpak after years of native packages installing and running fine. [03:13] DaemonFC[m] Flatpak is this idea where you build and package an application once and it sort of halfassed works on many different systems. [03:13] DaemonFC[m] It solves the problem for the person packaging the application as long as they don't care if it works or not for the people installing it. [03:14] mjg59 There are things you can justifiably blame on Flatpak. schestowitz's comment there wasn't one of them. [03:14] DaemonFC[m] In practice, having a Snap or a Flatpak is almost as bad as not having a package at all and figuring out how to build it yourself from source code. [03:15] mjg59 (Eg, Flathub accepting binary packages with no mechanism for reproducing them is definitely a bad thing) [03:15] DaemonFC[m] In fact, I've taken applications (small ones) out of Suse or Mageia or something and sort of jammed them into Fedora and had that work out better than the Flatpak. [03:16] DaemonFC[m] Well, in practice that's the main use case, just as it is for Snap. [03:17] DaemonFC[m] Microsoft loves carpet bombing Linux with bullshit in a way that is easiest for them, and of course they don't want anyone to know how it works. [03:18] DaemonFC[m] I was actually shocked that they added an APT repository for VS Code that schestowitz__ mentioned in Raspberry Pi OS. [03:18] DaemonFC[m] Because normally they want you to install this proprietary telemetry-backdoored piece of Electron crap using Snap. [03:23] schestowitz__ ./bombadillo [03:23] schestowitz__ ./bombadillo: /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.32' not found (required by ./bombadillo) [03:24] schestowitz__ Another failure, hard-linking libs [03:24] schestowitz__ a previous versiob of it works, but it is very old [03:25] schestowitz__ ./bombadillo_linux_64 [03:25] schestowitz__ it's only supporting gopher [03:25] schestowitz__ and assumes dialup [03:25] DaemonFC[m] There's a gopher add-on for Chromium browsers, but it's not real gopher. [03:25] DaemonFC[m] It uses a proxy server to turn it into "web pages" that the browser can render. [03:26] DaemonFC[m] I also think that all of Floodgap's add-ons are also not FOSS. [03:27] DaemonFC[m] There's some kind of "source available license". [03:27] mjg59 schestowitz__: That's not hard-linking libs [03:27] mjg59 schestowitz__: That's it being built against a newer libc than you have [03:28] mjg59 If you do that and end up pulling in symbols that only exist in newer versions of the library, it synthesises a requirement on that version symbol to make it clear what the problem is [03:28] DaemonFC[m] He does use Debian, so that happens more often. [18:26] DaemonFC[m] As for the Advanced Systems Format container, that was pretty much pointless too. [18:26] DaemonFC[m] MPEG-4 Part 14 would have let them implement their own proprietary DRM system, just like Apple did with "FairPlay". [18:29] DaemonFC[m] Wikipedia mentions that if the bit reservoir of WMA is not used, a frame is equal to a superframe, but I have yet to see any Microsoft encoder that doesn't use the bit reservoir, regardless of the encoder settings. [18:30] DaemonFC[m] There'd be no point in turning off the bit reservoir, but I guess they didn't want undefined behavior if they found a reason to do that later? [18:31] DaemonFC[m] MP3 decoders have sometimes had problems implementing the specification, but Microsoft's decoder was intended to be the only one anyone could use. [18:31] DaemonFC[m] For WMA, I mean. [18:31] DaemonFC[m] Even the third party ones for the Mac were just a Microsoft porting kit that got licensed to someone. Hey, why not just hand over all your passwords (and ALSO your customers' passwords) directly to the #NSA (yes, thank you!)? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2pO--ueqbM [21:16] -TechrightsBot-tr/#techrights-LastPass Is Nuking Their Free Tier - YouTube [21:16] techrights-bot Laura Tucker is crazy about mass #surveillance and talks about it constantly like an exciting idea that smart people must embrace and celebrate. [21:18] DaemonFC[m] schestowitz__: I was talking to the shop manager while getting the car repaired about investments too, and this is kind of a tech thing, right? [21:18] DaemonFC[m] Because these apps say you can "buy gold" but you don't know that they actually have any gold. [21:19] DaemonFC[m] Could just be a Ponzi. [21:20] techrights-bot People should not want #LibreOffice "in the browser"; most of today's browsers are just proxies for spying corporations (yes, #mozilla also) and are basically #surveillance tools. Dump #clownComputing [21:21] DaemonFC[m] With a government bond, you have an electronic serial number. It's registered to a taxpayer ID and a treasury account. If someone tried to break in and change the bank account to one they control and cash it, the deposit wouldn't go through because your name and tax ID don't match the new account. [21:21] techrights-bot #corporateMedia promotes what CORPORATIONS want, not what end users should want. Act and read accordingly. #clowncomputing #surveillance #peerPressure [21:21] DaemonFC[m] The government can make all the money it wants and has never defaulted on a bond. [21:22] DaemonFC[m] So it definitely has the ability to pay you back. [21:23] techrights-bot Also remember that one day ALL #socialcontrolmedia will be offline and there's is NOTHING that YOU can do to prevent it. #selfhosting [21:24] DaemonFC[m] This really rather sounds like an intricate 21st century alternative to all of these scams that blew through my grandmother's church that she "invested" all of her money in. [21:24] DaemonFC[m] Didn't get any of it back. The government shut some down and people went to jail, but her money was gone. [21:25] DaemonFC[m] No legitimate investment "promises" returns like that. [21:25] techrights-bot The worst's most polluting person is not the foremost flag bearer for #climatechange #activism but an INSULT to such activism. Also: he's close friends with people who smuggle young girls (underage) for sex. He prefers for the public to forget that. [21:27] DaemonFC[m] They can pay you back with money that they cheated other people out of with tax and inflation. [21:27] DaemonFC[m] But they never run out. [21:28] DaemonFC[m] So I've been casually scooping up inflation protected bonds with some money I'm absolutely sure we won't need for at least a year.
