[05:02] avalos The Web is awful. [05:02] avalos Wish we all went back to technology we can understand. [05:03] schestowitz__ thanks [05:03] schestowitz__ we have just fixed something related to gemini [05:03] schestowitz__ seeing it does not coexist with ipfs too well on the same device [05:04] superkuh The web is great. The web of linked documents is amazing. It's only trying to distribute and run applications over the web that is bad. [05:04] schestowitz__ "ajax" [05:04] schestowitz__ became "clown computing" [05:04] avalos superkuh: if the linked documents is what is amazing of the Web, Gemini can provide that, and even better! [05:04] schestowitz__ which is having a subset in web 'saas' or web 'apps' [05:05] superkuh avalos, I prefer not to throw out 30 years of history and resources just because I'm mad at megacorps making browsers suck. It's not like I have to use Chrome or modern FF. [05:06] avalos Fair enough. Same. [05:06] schestowitz__ it's not about throwing away [05:06] schestowitz__ you can use both [05:06] schestowitz__ but the bloated browsers should not be needed to just read an article [05:06] superkuh It's not gonna happen. [05:06] schestowitz__ you still use a text editor [05:06] superkuh You're right. So just don't use a bloated browser, make your own websites not suck, and it's all good. [05:06] schestowitz__ and probably not as "web app" [05:07] schestowitz__ superkuh: you might still need a 200MB 'browser' to just read a text file site, and it might come with "telemetry" [05:08] superkuh Were browsers 5 years ago broken? No. [05:08] superkuh That software still exists. [05:08] schestowitz__ try 15 years back [05:08] superkuh Eh, then you lack useful document things. [05:08] superkuh Like CSS. [05:08] schestowitz__ in 2021 good luck running a browser (modern "browser") on a 256MB of RAM PC [05:09] schestowitz__ superkuh: CSS can be done at the user's end [05:09] schestowitz__ you can do CSS-like things with gemini at your side [05:09] superkuh ... that's a statement that is true and irrelevant. [05:09] avalos I kinda like the Dillo approach to CSS. [05:10] superkuh I won't be supporting gemini. I will keep making websites that are documents that don't suck and putting them on web overlays like tor and i2p. [05:13] *blep (~blep@gateway/tor-sasl/blep) has joined #techrights [05:14] avalos At some point I might consider stop supporting the Web. If all I want is to share text-based content, the Web is unnecessary and redundant. [05:15] avalos Maybe just redirect my website to a Gemini proxy or something. [05:20] avalos Btw, schestowitz__, I mentioned you on a Mastodon toot a while ago, I read an interesting post about Microsoft and FOSS: https://hackernoon.com/a-post-mortem-in-5-acts-how-microsoft-privatized-open-source-and-killed-javascript-in-the-process-5s5i33ma [05:20] -TechrightsBot-tr/#techrights-hackernoon.com | A Post-Mortem in 5 Acts: How Microsoft Privatized Open Source And Killed JavaScript in the Process | Hacker Noon [05:21] avalos Well, it uses the term open source, but I think it applies to free software better, since open source is already a capitalist version of free software. [05:31] DaemonFC[m] Nothing stops you from just using older web standards. [05:36] superkuh At least until mega-corp browsers stop supporting HTTP themselves. [05:36] superkuh It won't be too long. [16:48] DaemonFC[m] The UK mostly managed to get a run of bad luck with that strain that mutated to spread faster and kill more people. [16:49] DaemonFC[m] The US voted for Trump, who just didn't care and surrounded himself with herd immunity pushers. [16:50] Old_Man Is that like when the soviets suffered their infamous "70 years of bad weather?" :D "It was just bad luck!" [16:53] Old_Man Wow, case fatality rate used to see the US at #50, which was pretty bad, but still not as bad as Canada, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, most of Europe... [16:53] DaemonFC[m] Instead of lifestyle inflation, I sort of slum it to keep the rent down. [16:54] Old_Man But now the US is not even in the top 60. I need to make my list longer, to see how badly we're handling this disease compared to the rest of the world. [16:54] DaemonFC[m] $100 here and $100 there and before you know it, you're flying backwards. [16:55] MinceR https://hugelolcdn.com/i/731526.jpg [16:56] Old_Man 83rd! The US is 83rd in the world, for case fatality rate. That's how badly we're messing it up: perhaps worse than 1-2 countries of Europe, but certainly way below Canada, Mexico, China, most of the developed world. [16:56] DaemonFC[m] Nice [16:56] DaemonFC[m] Old_Man: Like everything else. The US does badly on things like scientific literacy. [16:57] Old_Man So we dropped from #50 to #83, just in the past few months. Wow. [16:57] DaemonFC[m] Above third world countries, below the OECD though. [16:57] Old_Man I know, we're almost as bad as Europe. [16:57] DaemonFC[m] All of these posts about vaccines draw out paranoid conspiracy nuts like flies on a hunk of shit. [16:57] Old_Man UK has a higher case fatality rate. France has a higher case fatality rate. Germany has a higher case fatality rate. Canada has a higher case fatality rate. [16:57] DaemonFC[m] I can't help but to think we've failed these people badly. [16:58] DaemonFC[m] Someone made the statement that mRNA vaccines for the Coronavirus would cause cancer. [16:58] DaemonFC[m] I said I'd wait while they referenced their 8 years of medical school to articulate a theory about why that would happen. [16:58] Old_Man Belgium. China. India. Italy. Australia. All these places that like to feign condescension to the US, and their populations are dropping like flies from COVID-19, at much higher rates than the US. [16:59] DaemonFC[m] I doubt any of them will "cause cancer" but hey that's some unfounded accusation we can make. [16:59] DaemonFC[m] But the mRNA vaccines are the least likely to have unwanted side effects because they make the fewest questionable steps on the way to provoking an immune response. [16:59] Old_Man I wonder why people from those countries like to feign condescension to the US, when they're so much worse at saving their populations' lives when they get COVID-19? [16:59] Old_Man Do you think maybe it's jealousy? ● Feb 18 [17:00] DaemonFC[m] Typically, the simplest solution tends to be the better one. The adenovirus and attenuated virus vaccines have additional ingredients in them, and more parts of the virus, or even the virus itself, or a carrier virus we think was harmless and genetically modified. [17:01] DaemonFC[m] And the goal, in the end, is the same. Implant the mRNA for the spike protein into the cells. [17:01] Old_Man It's probably just jealousy. After all, the US produces a *lot* of effective, science-based health care, so after these European countries have mocked them for so many years, they're probably just jealous of the fact that the US is doing better at curing their COVID-19 patients than they are. [17:01] DaemonFC[m] We used to think that Human Papillomavirus was harmless. [17:01] DaemonFC[m] It didn't seem to cause any problems. [17:03] DaemonFC[m] For that matter, when scientists discovered Coronaviruses in the 1960s, they didn't research them that much because they were seen as the common cold, not something where a new one appears now and then and causes a wave of death before we just get used to it and it turns into a cold. [17:03] DaemonFC[m] Well, it was the United States and Germany that developed the better vaccination plans. [17:04] DaemonFC[m] The one being distributed in the UK is already known to be damned near useless against the South Africa variant, and was never as effective as mRNA vaccines in the first place. [17:04] DaemonFC[m] This is what you get with nationalism. You get 5-6 different solutions and none of them are as good as if everyone had huddled and worked on the problem and shared notes. [17:05] DaemonFC[m] Everyone thought they'd get their own economy humming along again and they'd emerge from this stronger than their neighbors with advantages to themselves. [17:05] DaemonFC[m] It's like there's a war, right, and you hope your neighbor's factories get bombed to shit, only in the modern world you need them because the economy is all connected like never before. [17:06] Old_Man Nah, vaccinations are effective at stopping people from *getting* the disease. The US *might* be doing better now in that metric as well, but the one in which the US is 83rd in the world, behind most of Europe/Canada/Australia etc., is in case fatality rate. [17:06] Old_Man That's a more general measure of who can effectively care for and cure their population. How are the hospitals? How are the treatments? [17:06] DaemonFC[m] It's not like the end of the second world war where Europe was in ruins and the US gets to be a superpower for 80 years. [17:06] Old_Man US keeps its people alive wayyyy better than most of Europe, China, India, and most of the world. [17:06] DaemonFC[m] Yes, but there's still plenty of people in the US who haven't gotten the disease. [17:07] DaemonFC[m] And if we act aggressively to prevent this from continuing to worsen, those other countries may still well have a bigger disaster in the end. [17:07] Old_Man I think you should stick with the Soviet Union's excuse. They were funnier. "Our people are starving because we've had 70 years of bad weather! Yeah! That's it! Not our fault! You're just lucky and we're unlucky!" :D [17:07] DaemonFC[m] But it doesn't really help our economy for that matter. [17:08] DaemonFC[m] Because we need those markets to do well and buy things from us, and we need them not to be all messed up because it ruins our import economy. [17:09] DaemonFC[m] That's why even if the US suddenly, this very day, magically vaccinated every last man, woman, and child....the economy would still be seriously sluggish. [17:09] DaemonFC[m] The rest of the world has serious issues, and half the revenue for the S&P 500 comes from abroad, you know. [17:09] DaemonFC[m] So the economic problems would still be severe. [17:10] Old_Man Kinda makes one wonder what would happen if the rest of the world would *learn lessons* from the US, rather than *ignorantly mocking* the US. [17:10] DaemonFC[m] So we need to do well by doing good, and to that end, we need to hope, and help, the rest of the world to recover quickly too. [17:10] DaemonFC[m] Not just humanitarian reasons, you know. [17:10] Old_Man If they could do things more like the US, maybe they could achieve the lower case fatality rate the US has. Or have the fuller employment the US had before the pandemic. [17:10] Old_Man Setting an example to follow is a good form of helping. [17:10] DaemonFC[m] The case fatality rate here seems to be hovering around 1.6% right now. [17:11] DaemonFC[m] It's being treated more effectively than it was when nobody knew what to do about it. [17:11] Old_Man Now if people in other countries could ask themselves, "how is the US down at #83 on the case fatality list?" and implement our methods, rather than attempting fake and unwarranted condescension and mockery, they might be doing better. [17:11] DaemonFC[m] Europe has had a chip on its shoulder for a while now. [17:11] DaemonFC[m] And I jsut don't get it. [17:12] Old_Man But, what can we say... jealousy is a powerful beast. [17:12] Old_Man Jealousy drives people to lie, it drives them to hate, it drives them to make up fake criticisms. [17:12] DaemonFC[m] It's decadent, corrupt, overflowing with crime, and without being propped up by our military, they wouldn't have national defense either. [17:13] DaemonFC[m] The UK has allowed its military to atrophy to the point where they themselves wonder if they'll even have a blue sea Navy in the next few decades. [17:15] DaemonFC[m] The US has gotten a sneak preview of what a former superpower in its death throes 25 years ahead of us looks like. [17:15] Old_Man UK is #34 on the case fatality rate list, by the way. Compare that to US whose case fatality rate has dropped, from #50 to #83 just in the past few months. [17:16] Old_Man They're just really, really, *REALLY* not a country anyone should want to emulate. :D [17:16] Old_Man Much less accept mockery from. [17:16] DaemonFC[m] Things turn inward. People start yammering about how great things were 20-30 years ago. Politicians with extreme "solutions" say they can make it happen again, and fuck things up worse. [17:16] MinceR https://hugelolcdn.com/i/731323.jpg [17:17] DaemonFC[m] Roy even admitted that now that the EU's breaking up, the UK could be next. [17:17] DaemonFC[m] Northern Ireland has a majority that never wanted to be in it anyway. [17:17] DaemonFC[m] Scotland is demanding another independence referendum. [17:18] Old_Man Yeah, after looking at their performance with COVID-19, I wouldn't want to belong to the UK any more either. [17:19] DaemonFC[m] It's what happens when you take by force people who despise you and then lord over them. [17:19] DaemonFC[m] And now with these idiots in England messing the national economy up so bad and threatening to bring the NHS crashing down by "saving it" don'tcha know, they're fed up. [17:19] MinceR to be fair, i wouldn't want to the EU either [17:19] MinceR s/to the/to belong to the/ [17:20] Old_Man Was the NHS responsible for treating people with COVID-19? [17:20] DaemonFC[m] The NHS had to stop what they were doing and save a gibbering idiot that's trying to shut them down, because he was shaking hands and not wearing a mask. [17:20] DaemonFC[m] Same thing happened here, but at least we got rid of ours shortly after. [17:20] Old_Man Because if so, bringing it "crashing down" *might* be the best thing for it. Obviously someone there has failed, very badly. [17:20] Old_Man If it was the NHS, then yes, disbanding the NHS may well save many lives. [17:20] DaemonFC[m] The closest thing we have to NHS is the VA, which has to cover the president too. [17:21] DaemonFC[m] The VA saved Trump while he kept demanding budget cuts to it while taking credit for Obama/Sanders' mostly successful reform law. [17:21] Old_Man Whatever he did, it was obviously far superior to the UK's NHS. [17:21] Old_Man The US has a much higher success rate at saving COVID-19 patients' lives than the UK does. [17:21] DaemonFC[m] What the conservative parties in the UK want is something more like the US. [17:22] DaemonFC[m] The rich get whatever they want, most people get shitty high deductible plans with outrageous premiums, some of the poor get a Medicaid card that nobody even takes, and the rest get nothing at all. [17:23] DaemonFC[m] You lose twice with most health insurance plans in the US. [17:23] Old_Man Apparently the COVID-19 treatments available for most people are far superior than in most of the developed world. [17:24] DaemonFC[m] Because you pay $400-1,500 a month, then they stick you with $6,000 deductibles and 20-30% co-pays after that, and you can use it at 2-3 hospitals in your area, and if something happens where you can't make it there, you're on the hook for double the out of pocket costs. [17:24] Old_Man But, one wonders: for those who are fans of one-size-fits-all programs, why don't they implement their one-size-fits-all plans for those who like them and agree to participate and opt in voluntarily? [17:24] DaemonFC[m] So in the end you file bankruptcy anyway to stop them from suing you and taking your life savings, if you have any. [17:25] Old_Man If NHS is so cool, if medicare-for-all is so promising, if single-payer is so obviously beneficial: why force anyone to participate? Why not fund it only from voluntary participants, and pay out benefits only to those same voluntary participants? [17:25] DaemonFC[m] Then you pray that nothing else happens for eight years. [17:25] MinceR because those would be one-size-fits-all-who-opts-in-voluntarily plans, not one-size-fits-all plans :> [17:25] Old_Man If those were any good, we would see it in COVID-19 survivor numbers, and then *everyone* would sign up voluntarily and opt-in. [17:26] DaemonFC[m] MinceR: Mom's watching the system she voted for, defended, railed about being "better than Socialism" all fall down on top of her like a house with a rotten foundation. [17:26] Old_Man And for those who don't opt in, they're free to choose some different option. Why do all of those plans have to be enforced with violence? [17:26] DaemonFC[m] And she's still saying "If Biden shuts down Social Security!". I say, "Trump tried to. Said he would if he got another term.". [17:27] Old_Man That's probably not true. [17:27] DaemonFC[m] He "delayed" the payroll tax, but most employers kept sending it in anyway. I told mom, "He was trying to make it look like he gave people a massive raise ahead of the election, and then if he won, it would be too late for them to do anything about it when the tax kicked in and they had a huge fire to put out with the IRS.". [17:27] Old_Man That was a valuable lesson from 2016-2020: 99% of all criticisms made by Democrats are just blatantly false. Fact check: FALSE. [17:28] MinceR seems to me most humans crave violence [17:28] MinceR at least living on the constant threat of violence [17:28] Old_Man The many, many Democrats who claimed that Trump said "there are good people on both sides," about white supremacists? Fact check: FALSE. [17:28] DaemonFC[m] The "delay" would raise your paychecks by 6.4% for 5 months, then tax time would kick in and you'd owe the IRS....6.4% of your pay from the last 5 months as a lump sum. [17:28] DaemonFC[m] Nice "tax cut", right? [17:28] Old_Man The many, many Democrats who claimed that Trump said he had groped women's genitalia? Fact check: FALSE. [17:29] Old_Man So, you have to look at the source of the criticism. If it's from his own party, or from third parties or something, it's probably true, but if it's anything a Democrat criticizes him for, it's probably an outrageous falsehood. [17:29] DaemonFC[m] What Trump was basically trying to do is advance people their tax refund and call it a "tax cut". Most people get a refund, and this would have led to no refund. Some people owe the IRS, and they would owe them more. [17:30] schestowitz__ [17:21] The US has a much higher success rate at saving COVID-19 patients' lives than the UK does. [17:58] schestowitz__ Chalmers Johnson and others used to joke about that empty rhetoric that nations critical of US foreign policy are just jealous of stuff like McDonalds and shopping malls [17:59] DaemonFC[m] You go to the hospital and it's $6,000 from the ambulance ride before you even get there. I was having severe cluster headaches and I knew that I could at least spare myself a nice fat $1,500 copay to ride in an ambulance. [18:02] DaemonFC[m] So I took the train there, hoping I wouldn't lose consciousness in front of a bunch of pickpockets and neighborhood thugs. [18:03] DaemonFC[m] If I knew I'd be bankrupt anyway in another year I would have taken the ambulance and dodged the hospital, but you know.... [18:03] DaemonFC[m] Hindsight is perfect. [18:05] DaemonFC[m] Some doctor told me I cheated the other hospitals by throwing them in. [18:05] DaemonFC[m] I said, "You mean the ones with the $200 million dollar a year CEOs?". [18:06] DaemonFC[m] They're rich. They must have earned it because they're rich. They have superior genes because they're rich. [18:07] DaemonFC[m] Bill Gates's daughter said her dad has good genes on CNN. [18:07] MinceR the genes for sociopathy? [18:07] DaemonFC[m] She said she wished they could inject her dad into her. I was like eww gross. [18:07] MinceR kinky [18:07] DaemonFC[m] Anyway, ignoring the obvious sex jokes, I think this is what happened with Agent Smith in the Matrix. [18:07] MinceR maybe she needs to consult a psychologist [18:08] MinceR they injected bill gates into Agent Smith? [18:08] MinceR poor guy. i mean, program. [18:08] DaemonFC[m] No, Smith became a virus and started injecting himself into other people. [18:08] DaemonFC[m] Overwriting their minds with his. It's how he escaped into the real world. [18:09] DaemonFC[m] I'd really hate to be that Smith, you know. Or any of them that had to overwrite people that eventually die. [18:10] DaemonFC[m] The programs would never die, and the Matrix isn't really as bad as the real world. It was just designed to cause people's minds to go into a busy loop. [18:11] DaemonFC[m] Smith pontificates that the Matrix was too perfect in the beginning and it caused people to go crazy because they couldn't accept an imperfect world where they wanted for nothing. [18:11] MinceR maybe they're networked [18:11] MinceR and so Smith just gets more bodies to exist in and control simultaneously [18:11] DaemonFC[m] I never understood Smith's explanation for why the Matrix has to replicate all the bad stuff in the world or else we go crazy. [18:12] MinceR it's because humans are crazy and evil [18:12] DaemonFC[m] But I guess even rich people commit suicide sometimes. [18:12] DaemonFC[m] So you figure we really would go crazier if we weren't somehow getting off on depression, anger, anxiety, and fear? [18:13] DaemonFC[m] No problems to solve and your mind does sort of turn into oatmeal. [18:14] DaemonFC[m] Apparently, they've studied what happens when people retire and have nothing to do. [18:14] DaemonFC[m] They become senile much faster. [18:14] DaemonFC[m] Of course, "they" might just be saying that to get people to accept the fact that their pension is being stolen from them, but it's "for the best" because "I'd lose my mind." if I retired anyway. [18:15] DaemonFC[m] "Yay, now I get to work at McDonalds when I'm 80!" [18:16] MinceR reading is too difficult for most people [18:16] DaemonFC[m] A tiny pension and some time to yourself is too much. [18:16] DaemonFC[m] Bill Gates, Bezos, and Musk need more money! [18:20] DaemonFC[m] Mom kind of dug a hole for herself on the retirement thing. [18:20] DaemonFC[m] She took a job at a Catholic retirement home because they promised her a juicy pension, where other employers had 401(k) accounts, and since the church is a church and not a "business", they aren't covered by the law that requires them to buy insurance from the government in case it has to take over the pension and make people whole. [18:20] DaemonFC[m] So as the church continues filing bankruptcy against its employees, they lose everything they were told they would get. [18:20] DaemonFC[m] Stay classy, Catholics! [18:20] DaemonFC[m] Gotta keep the Pope in his little nation state palace. [18:20] MinceR :> [18:22] DaemonFC[m] MinceR: And they offer a 403(b), which is owned by you, with a match, which they can't take away. [18:22] DaemonFC[m] But she opted into a pension that they can take away to pay off young men who were molested by their priest. [18:23] MinceR how selfless of her [18:23] DaemonFC[m] It was pretty obvious this was "coming" (sorry), even before she opted in 20 years ago, because of all of those huge settlements the church was paying out back then. [18:24] DaemonFC[m] MinceR: Well, on paper the pension looked bigger, but in reality it's also not secure because it's a pot of money that the government doesn't insure and doesn't monitor for solvency. [18:24] MinceR pension is just what one wants to gamble with [18:24] DaemonFC[m] So they just say it's there and let you work until you're about to take it, and then they admit it's not there, but they also have no use for you anymore so fuck off. [18:24] MinceR she could also go to the casino for "insurance" [18:25] DaemonFC[m] She would have had better odds at a casino. [18:25] DaemonFC[m] Sometimes they let people win. It's the law. [18:25] DaemonFC[m] There are legally mandated payout percentages, but it's always way less than what they take in. [18:25] DaemonFC[m] The casinos don't mind because if nobody ever won, nobody would play. [18:25] DaemonFC[m] Like the lottery. [18:26] DaemonFC[m] And the payout percentage doesn't mean you will ever win anything. [18:26] DaemonFC[m] It just means that over a given amount of time, that game has to pay out, say, 70 cents on the dollar, to someone, or in amounts small enough to entice them to lose more. [18:26] DaemonFC[m] So it's friendly to the casino. [18:27] DaemonFC[m] Mandy was asking why the casinos would give you free booze. [18:28] DaemonFC[m] I said, "It makes you stupid and sloppy so you'll lose more money.". [18:28] MinceR :> [18:29] DaemonFC[m] Never pass up on a sure thing over lottery odds. [18:29] DaemonFC[m] And that's basically what mom did with the choice between a private account or the Catholic Ponzi Scheme. [18:30] schestowitz__ [18:07] She said she wished they could inject her dad into her. I was like eww gross. [18:30] DaemonFC[m] Instead of the guaranteed matching funds, they just said they put money in there and then didn't and now they owe her nothing. [18:30] schestowitz__ Epstein was also intro transhumanism [18:30] schestowitz__ sick mindset [18:30] schestowitz__ maybe they also think screwing young girls will magically make them younger [18:30] schestowitz__ Trump spoke of "bloodline" [18:30] CrystalMath he should have tried drinking their blood [18:31] DaemonFC[m] Also, if there is money in there, and with a private account you know there is, you can direct the investments, whereas god only knows what the pension fund is messed up in. [18:31] CrystalMath i heard it worked for Erzsebet Bathory [18:31] schestowitz__ What's so good about Bill's "jeans" (genes)? His feminine voice? [18:31] DaemonFC[m] It's probably out there making speculative investments that they can project will pay out enough money so they can screw the fund on the front end and spend elsewhere, and then the fund craps out. [18:32] DaemonFC[m] That's what the State of Illinois has done. [18:33] DaemonFC[m] When it's your money, you look for something solid, something real, something diversified based on how much risk you'll accept. [18:33] DaemonFC[m] I've heard of rich people having unnecessary transfusions saying it makes them feel younger. [18:33] DaemonFC[m] They literally are vampires. [18:36] DaemonFC[m] There are dangers of getting a blood transfusion, so I don't know why anyone would do it unless it was medically necessary. [18:37] DaemonFC[m] One probably won't hurt you, but if you start doing it all the time because what the hell. They'll let rich people do anything..... [18:37] DaemonFC[m] You start running serious risk of adverse reactions, the transfused blood attacking and damaging your organs and bone marrow, disease (even with screening, they miss some), and so on. [21:25] DaemonFC[m] According to Worldometer (which is tracking Coronavirus deaths), we have about 42 years worth of oil left. [21:25] DaemonFC[m] MARISOL is doing her part to use it up getting water delivered from a truck. [21:27] DaemonFC[m] I have a dental appointment next month, I just can't remember what day. [21:27] DaemonFC[m] I remember they wanted to sell me some sort of a "discount plan". [21:28] XRevan86 DaemonFC[m]: They want to get less money from you? How noble of them. [21:28] DaemonFC[m] I looked it over, it's not that impressive. They probably "plan" on people forgetting they have the "plan" and not using it or canceling it. [21:28] DaemonFC[m] No, they want you to pay them more money to pay them less money. [21:28] DaemonFC[m] This is the sort of crap they'd get mom with. [21:29] DaemonFC[m] Because you'll pay them more money than you'll save on the services you're likely to need, over time. [21:29] DaemonFC[m] That's how "plans" work. [21:33] DaemonFC[m] It's like when you buy tires for your car, then the salesman says oh for $30 a tire we'll guarantee them against anything that may happen. [21:33] DaemonFC[m] So you are guaranteed to pay them $120, but nothing may happen. [21:34] DaemonFC[m] Or you might blow one of them out on a nail and you paid $120 for that, but instead of getting a new tire, you get one for half price because there was half the remaining tread on that one, so instead of a new tire for $120, you got a new tire for $180. [21:34] DaemonFC[m] And that's if you remember to keep the paperwork safe, and the blowout happens within towing distance of one of their stores. [21:37] DaemonFC[m] With the dental discount plan, you pay about what two cleanings cost and you get two cleanings, at a discount, and then you get locked in to using them as your dentist if anything really serious happens because you have the plan and nobody else takes it. [21:37] DaemonFC[m] So you're really paying them to hold you hostage. [21:38] DaemonFC[m] It also flags suckers, which I'm sure if they're a crooked dentist, they'll like even more. [21:38] DaemonFC[m] Because they can tell you anything's going wrong with your mouth and know you won't even compare prices and get another opinion before they bust out the machinery, because hey, you're on a plan. [21:40] DaemonFC[m] Don't buy extended warranties, service plans, or discount plans. Whatever they call them. [21:41] DaemonFC[m] It's cash in the trash and they know half the people will lose the paperwork, then by the time something does break, and even if they honor the plan, then you've paid ten times the amount of just declining all the plans and then replacing the thing that broke. [21:42] DaemonFC[m] Walmart is big on plans. They have plans. Lots of plans. They plan to pick your pocket, backed by Allstate. If something happens to this here $50 microwave, your $17 plan will cover it. Just hit yes on the screen. [21:44] DaemonFC[m] Then if your $50 microwave craps out in the first 12 months and you bring it back and show them your $17 plan, they'll say "Sorry, you have to go through the manufacturer's warranty." which you get with the microwave. [21:45] DaemonFC[m] The manufacturer's warranty is even more fun, because they'll say "Oh sure, just ship it both ways at your expense and then after the $30 in postage we'll replace your $50 microwave. [21:46] DaemonFC[m] MinceR: I guess I'm taking the long way around here to get to the point. [21:46] DaemonFC[m] The whole world is a hustle. Everyone is always trying to push something on you. [21:47] DaemonFC[m] They'll do anything to have their way. [21:47] DaemonFC[m] Bill Gates isn't a "genius", as his daughter (who wants to have him in her) put it. [21:48] DaemonFC[m] He's figured out what disasters will befall us eventually, and putting a tiny amount of money into it when it's small and nobody is looking. [21:49] DaemonFC[m] You don't need to be a genius to figure out that humans are fucked six ways to Sunday, and that energy, the climate, and viruses are part of it. [21:52] Old_Man Have you ever read the recent book by Steven Pinker about that? [21:52] Old_Man I'll go find a link, but if you've read it, you probably already know which one I'm talking about. :) [21:53] Old_Man There it is: "Enlightenment Now" by Steven Pinker, 2018. [21:56] Old_Man But the really nice thing is how those of us not involved in "the hustle" are now at greater liberty to isolate ourselves from the liars, the hate-screamers, and the hustlers. [21:56] Old_Man We even have the foundation for our own separate economy laid, and bitcoin is doing quite well today I see. :) ● Feb 18 [22:01] MinceR yeah, he was wrong about the Long Peace too [22:01] MinceR unfortunately [22:09] MinceR (cat) https://ircz.de/p/21020615 [22:09] -TechrightsBot-tr/#techrights-ircz.de | IRCZ makes your life worth living Post object (5217596) [22:09] DaemonFC[m] Longer happier lives.... How lots of people don't have any plans for making money but they just keep popping out babies and taking them to the welfare office. [22:11] DaemonFC[m] She was talking about Gonad the Barbarian's daughter Erica, who started when she was 15, and had three of them by 20. [22:12] DaemonFC[m] She said he didn't put his foot down on much with his kids but he twisted her ear to get her to go get a tubal ligation. [22:12] DaemonFC[m] The doctor refused to do it because she wasn't 21 yet. [22:12] DaemonFC[m] I said, "What the hell does that have to do with anything? She was 20 and had 3 of them. That's more than enough!". [22:13] DaemonFC[m] She said, "I know, but that's what the doctors were saying. So he waited for 10 months biting his nails hoping she wouldn't pop out a fourth one, and she didn't. He drove her down there on her 21st birthday.". [22:14] DaemonFC[m] Oh one of those people. Starts popping them out at 15, dad's in prison if we even know who he is..... [22:14] DaemonFC[m] And she's white in the middle of Trump country, so free pass. [22:15] Old_Man DaemonFC[m], you kind of missed the point. People outside the hustle can employ each other, save money outside of the hustle (again, that bitcoin price is lookin mighty fine today), can provide medical care for each other, etc. [22:16] Old_Man We don't need to participate in the dishonesty that everyone else does, to improve our own quality of life. We have free software, for example, and can live just fine without, say, Microsoft and Apple. [22:16] DaemonFC[m] Yeah, we had what was called "lodge care plans" where people just joined together and hired a doctor to treat the group, and the American Medical Association formed to get rid of that. [22:16] MinceR how am i going to find someone outside the hustle to employ me? [22:17] DaemonFC[m] They felt that they weren't being paid enough. They got the government to fuck everything up, and now without insurance it costs $400 just to visit the doctor for 15 minutes. [22:17] Old_Man Ask them pointed questions during your interviews, to ensure your potential employers share your values. [22:18] DaemonFC[m] Nobody wants to rock the boat, even while they're suffering under this system. [22:18] DaemonFC[m] Even 20 years ago it wasn't anywhere near this bad. You go to the doctor uninsured, he gave you a cash discount. Cost maybe $50. [22:19] Old_Man You can probably see that again when doctors start accepting bitcoin. [22:19] DaemonFC[m] Probably not. [22:19] Old_Man Part of the reason for the steep cost-of-living increase is typical Democrat spending programs that drive up monetary inflation. [22:19] DaemonFC[m] Doctors just take whatever inflation is running and multiply it by 6 each year to get the new figure. [22:19] Old_Man Bitcoin helps to address that failure of typical Democrat governance. [22:20] DaemonFC[m] I wish I could get a raise like that, and I doubt I'm alone on that. [22:20] Old_Man Oh, and well-intended subsidies as well, that actually just end up driving up costs, as tuition and health care have both shown. [22:20] Old_Man My bitcoin savings did better than that. [22:21] DaemonFC[m] Yes, the government comes along and pours unlimited funding into shitty health insurance plans that are designed by the insurance company to make sure that very little of it ever gets paid out into treatments. [22:21] Old_Man Also, I've been quite happy to see how hydroponics videos have really taken off on youtube in recent years... apparently there are very large communities that have embraced greater self-sufficiency for all of their basic needs. [22:21] DaemonFC[m] Trump killed the no insurance fine and as soon as the fine from the IRS was gone, 2 million people immediately dropped the insurance. [22:21] DaemonFC[m] What does that tell you? [22:21] Old_Man There are probably 2/3 of voters who recognized those failures of Obamacare and voted against them, is the good news. Our community of recognizing such economic illiteracy is quite large. [22:22] DaemonFC[m] The only people keeping it are the ones paying little or nothing for it. [22:22] Old_Man My state even passed a law that hospitals have to start publishing their prices on their websites now! That should help with some competition and accountability. [22:22] DaemonFC[m] Either because it's free (Medicaid) or like $20-40 because subsidies hide most of that iceberg. [22:23] DaemonFC[m] And you'd be crazy for passing up $20-40 insurance, right? [22:23] DaemonFC[m] If we could get that, I'd get it. [22:23] DaemonFC[m] The no surprise bills is a federal law too now apparently. [22:23] DaemonFC[m] Illinois had that a long time ago. [22:23] DaemonFC[m] Didn't help. [22:24] DaemonFC[m] All the ER has to do to comply with it is stick out a sign like "Waiting in the recovery room after surgery: $150 a minute". [22:25] DaemonFC[m] If Will Rogers was around today he'd have to say the difference between death and health insurance is that death doesn't get worse each time Congress meets. [22:26] Old_Man ...just like the economists warned would happen, back when Biden was calling Obamacare a "big fucking deal" [22:26] DaemonFC[m] Ironically, the people best suited to navigate this world are the have nothings because they're judgment-proof. [22:26] Old_Man That's the thesis of Charles Koch's excellent book, "Believe In People." [22:27] Old_Man It's quite brilliant, his advocacy for grassroots solutions rather than top-down assertions of control and dominance. [22:27] DaemonFC[m] "Pile of rotting cash" is actually better than leaving it all dangling in the bank for a judgment creditor to ambush and take. [22:27] DaemonFC[m] Most people in America are in way more danger from the hospital than scammers and people hacking into their bank. [22:27] Old_Man He voices that value very well. [22:28] DaemonFC[m] If people scam you, there's banking regulations in some cases where the bank has to make you whole again. If the bank itself fails, you get your money back from the government. [22:29] DaemonFC[m] If your appendix ruptures, the hospital sues you, takes everything, and doesn't leave you enough to pay your landlord next month. [22:30] DaemonFC[m] schestowitz__ seriously underestimates the danger ratio of taking a COVID vaccine that's not well tested vs. ending up in the hospital with COVID. [22:30] DaemonFC[m] Because in America, even if you survive COVID, you'll get the bill and wish you hadn't. [22:30] DaemonFC[m] That's why he says lots of folks die at home with it. [22:31] DaemonFC[m] It was bad enough to require hospitalization but they were more afraid of the bill than the disease. [22:31] Old_Man That is, of course, the very reason why bankruptcy exists. [22:31] Old_Man So people don't have to worry about that. [22:31] DaemonFC[m] I can't file again until 2028! [22:31] DaemonFC[m] So I mean, I cannot rack up a hospital bill again for probably, oh, 6 more years at least. [22:32] DaemonFC[m] You can sort of fend them off because you're probably not the first in line to be sued by the collection agency. [22:32] DaemonFC[m] Maybe for a year. [22:32] DaemonFC[m] I'd start spending down anything past the bankruptcy exemption and file the day you're eligible. [22:33] DaemonFC[m] But yeah, you can file and then you're on your own for 8 years. [22:33] DaemonFC[m] Where anything that happens, you're on your own. [22:34] DaemonFC[m] It's not really a plan so much as it is an emergency valve that became a plan because nobody can pay bills like these. [22:35] DaemonFC[m] Even with BAPCA, US bankruptcy law mostly is rooted in a 1978 law. In 1978, medical debt wasn't a major issue like it is now. [22:35] DaemonFC[m] Healthcare was fairly cheap. Most people had good union jobs that paid for it 100%./ [22:36] DaemonFC[m] A number of things have happened since 1978 that opened up "health insurance" to more people, so doctors and hospitals no longer have any incentive not to sock it to you if you're uninsured. [22:37] DaemonFC[m] The market is distorted by all of this freebie shit, and since the doctors don't make a ton off them, they go where they can. Take people's houses, cars, and bank balance. [22:38] DaemonFC[m] The government is mainly focused on free insurance (Medicaid) for people who are poorer than Job's turkey. [22:39] DaemonFC[m] So it incentivizes people to save no money and work a crappy job so the state is forced to do something with them. [22:39] DaemonFC[m] Because they accumulate savings, work more hours, or get a good job, then they lose Medicaid and have to pay thousands of dollars. [22:40] MinceR 18 231722 < Old_Man> Ask them pointed questions during your interviews, to ensure your potential employers share your values. [22:40] MinceR i already know they do not [22:40] DaemonFC[m] There's only two answers here. Medicare for everyone, or the government cutting those folks who get Medicaid and Medicare loose and letting the market dictate the price without a captive audience of patients. [22:44] DaemonFC[m] You can draw out your retirement without penalty to pay a disastrous medical bill. [22:44] DaemonFC[m] But if you file bankruptcy they can't touch your retirement account even if it's above your exemption allowance. [22:45] DaemonFC[m] Bankruptcy is a better idea than emptying your retirement account. Not that they want people to know that. [22:46] DaemonFC[m] Whatever you have in there is probably going to knock you back to square one and you'll retire as a pauper. ● Feb 18 [23:17] techrights-bot Hands-On with Ubuntu Unity 20.10 on the Raspberry Pi 4 http://www.tuxmachines.org/node/147843 #gnu #linux [23:17] -TechrightsBot-tr/#techrights-www.tuxmachines.org | Hands-On with Ubuntu Unity 20.10 on the Raspberry Pi 4 | Tux Machines [23:27] techrights-bot NEWS #Techdirt #PrendaLaw #copyright Appeals Court Affirms $1.5 Million Restitution Judgment Against #PaulHansmeier https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20210214/16234046246/appeals-court-affirms-15-million-restitution-judgment-against-paul-hansmeier.shtml [23:27] -TechrightsBot-tr/#techrights-Appeals Court Affirms $1.5 Million Restitution Judgment Against Paul Hansmeier | Techdirt [23:28] techrights-bot "recent self-inflicted injuries such as the election of Donald J.
