[00:01] schestowitz-TR lloks like dead birds [00:01] DaemonFC https://i.imgur.com/XQugX85.jpg [00:01] *GNUmoon (~GNUmoon@gateway/tor-sasl/gnumoon) has joined #techrights [00:01] DaemonFC Then there was all of this left in the filter itself. [00:02] schestowitz-TR the filter is all bent [00:02] schestowitz-TR cars are PITA [00:02] schestowitz-TR I drove some over the years [00:02] schestowitz-TR in fact, I still renew my licence [00:02] DaemonFC Yeah, after I went over to the dumpster and smacked all of the trash out of the old filter, there was so much black dirt and soot in the filter media, it looked like shag carpeting. [00:03] schestowitz-TR but maybe I won't be back to owning a car... until I move somewhere out of town and need one [00:03] DaemonFC After I vacuumed out the rest of the mess from the filter housing area and underneath the cowling, I put a clean filter in. [00:03] DaemonFC The air conditioner blows colder now, and quite a bit more air too. [00:03] schestowitz-TR anyway, about tech... [00:04] DaemonFC I wanted to get this done before winter so my heater would work better and defrost the windows faster. [00:04] schestowitz-TR seems RMS is back to talking in public [00:04] schestowitz-TR afaik first time since 2019 [00:04] schestowitz-TR it's interesting... his take on youtueb [00:05] DaemonFC schestowitz-TR, Even after breaking the retainer fastener and having to replace them at the hardware store for an additional $3.99, the total cost of doing it myself was about $15. [00:05] DaemonFC The cost of the job at the shop is about $60 on this car. [00:06] DaemonFC I can't believe that between an engine air filter and a cabin air filter, an independent shop charges a combined total of roughly $100 on a Chevy. [00:06] DaemonFC If you buy the filters yourself on Amazon, they cost $9 for an engine air filter and $11 for a cabin air filter. [00:07] DaemonFC So the shop is really soaking you for another $80 in labor on these two jobs that hardly take any time or effort at all. [00:07] DaemonFC And the dealer will get you even worse. [00:07] schestowitz-TR DaemonFC: you spend far too much on this car [00:07] schestowitz-TR time and money, like court hearings [00:07] schestowitz-TR I used to drive just to get to the gym [00:08] schestowitz-TR it was 1) expensive 2) risky (roads) 3) time-consuming [00:08] schestowitz-TR better to just work out at home or outdoors [00:08] schestowitz-TR many people have a car or keep one because of work or kids [00:08] schestowitz-TR it might be cheaper to live close to work [00:09] DaemonFC $1150 in rent (but cats are extra) at the closest apartment to where Mandy works. [00:10] DaemonFC I'm glad that the landlord here seems to have gotten thumped hard after trying to raise the rent $45 a month and backed away. [00:10] DaemonFC It seems like that cost him a few tenants maybe. He had some move out and it doesn't seem like the ones he was listing are flying off the market. [00:10] DaemonFC So maybe he's happy with last year's rent while he hopes to see better days next year. [00:11] DaemonFC The types he rents to are very sensitive to price and if they don't think they're getting a good deal they probably tell him so long and go look at what the other landlords that advertise down at the supermarket will offer them. [00:12] DaemonFC There's too many people fleeing Waukegan with whatever they can carry to keep upwards pressure on the rent. [00:12] *psymin has quit (Quit: Leaving) [00:12] *psymin has quit (Quit: Leaving) [00:12] DaemonFC It's turning into a zero sum game. You can't lose 0.8% of your city's residents every year for going on two decades and have pressure on rental price where it's a seller's market. [00:12] DaemonFC Now they're going to turn on each other in a bidding war for the same tenants. [00:13] DaemonFC schestowitz-TR, The property market is in for a severe contraction. [00:13] DaemonFC The only thing holding it up for now is the Fed, and they blinked today and it cost the Dow nearly 1,000 points. [00:14] DaemonFC See how that works? They say they may not buy MBS in the same amounts they currently do and the market loses so much of this fake value. [00:14] DaemonFC They're a Central Bank. They shouldn't be holding ANY mortgages to begin with. [00:14] DaemonFC That's not what they were designed to do in the financial market! [00:15] schestowitz-TR 'market' [00:15] schestowitz-TR finance was supposed to be for markets [00:15] schestowitz-TR bartering and all [00:15] schestowitz-TR than finance itself became a "market" [00:15] schestowitz-TR a bit like patents [00:15] schestowitz-TR was supposed to be for science [00:15] schestowitz-TR now exists mostly to serve parasites that do "law" [00:17] XRevan86 https://freenode.net/ [00:17] schestowitz-TR oh no [00:17] XRevan86 Wait for it [00:17] schestowitz-TR what not? [18:05] DaemonFC It's a 4 TB drive. [18:15] DaemonFC According to reviews, they're at least no more _un_reliable than any other hard drive company. [18:15] DaemonFC It's amazing that the old hard drives I've had just went and went without any failure for 20 years or more, but these new ones...look out. [18:15] DaemonFC They start littering your event log with SMART errors after a couple of years maybe. [18:16] DaemonFC schestowitz-TR, As far as Windows 11, there's even less difference now. [18:16] DaemonFC They say they'll backport DirectStorage to Windows 10. [18:17] DaemonFC The big thing is if you stay on 10, and many don't have a choice if they want to keep using Windows, you have about 3 years of security patches left. [18:17] DaemonFC Then it becomes incredibly unsafe to use. [18:17] DaemonFC And that's what Microsoft does, isn't it? [18:18] DaemonFC Other than that, it's just the same old, same old. They re-released what was basically Windows 95 twice more as a cash grab. 8 times if you count the OEM update packs that kept things up to date enough for new hardware. [18:19] DaemonFC They used a FAT32 and USB driver as leverage to make sure that people didn't choose to stay on Windows 95 and not have to deal with that IE mess. (At least until unofficial tools to remove IE came along.) [18:19] DaemonFC In the end, though, all Windows 9x releases had end of life in 2006. [18:19] DaemonFC So updating didn't even get you a reset on support. [18:21] DaemonFC schestowitz-TR, I'm so mad at Lemonade I'm considering switching my renter's insurance. [18:21] DaemonFC They sent me a denial letter saying that they wouldn't write me life insurance because I fessed up to having bipolar disorder. [18:21] DaemonFC That was the only reason for an outright denial. [18:22] DaemonFC I can understand if they said, we want you to prove you take medicine for it, or we may need to score you differently for premiums. [18:22] DaemonFC Everyone has some kind of a condition or life circumstance that's on their list of questions. [18:22] DaemonFC What do they do? Refuse to insure anyone who says "Yes."? [18:23] DaemonFC For all we know, the 50 million (at least) who have had COVID should be denied a policy before a guy who has bipolar. Fuck, I have the presence of mind to value my life enough to get not one, not two, but three vaccine doses because I don't want to die. [18:23] DaemonFC Much of the country that is refusing the vaccine is crazier than I am, albeit in a different way. They have really shitty math skills. [18:24] DaemonFC Is that a mental illness? Well, listening to Facebook people who have every reason to lie to sell bunk products is definitely showing lack of rational thought. [18:25] DaemonFC Not being able to calculate the odds of dying from the disease, which everyone who isn't vaccinated will eventually get, and get much worse, in the end, is a deficiency. Maybe they should include a fucking math test before you can get life insurance. [18:33] DaemonFC schestowitz-TR, And these insurance people are not in the business to just write checks without asking questions. [18:33] DaemonFC No type of insurance does that. [18:33] DaemonFC And people who defraud insurance companies get caught eventually and the penalties are severe. [18:34] DaemonFC So many people lie to get a policy issued, and sure that's not hard, but once you die they start an investigation that leads back, especially if it was suspicious. [18:34] DaemonFC And then they can just keep the premiums and not pay out anything except to their investigator. [18:35] DaemonFC There was actually a movie about a couple who committed insurance fraud and then accidentally killed the guy who was pretending to rob their house (because the wife wasn't in on it and found a crossbow and shot him), and then Phil Collins plays the investigator.
