[18:09] DaemonFC[m] The Intel Xe graphics say they're twice as fast as the gen 10, which were already quite a bit faster than the Iris 540 in this thing. [18:09] DaemonFC[m] And the CPU is 5 years newer, and has double the cores and twice as much L2 cache. [18:10] DaemonFC[m] So it should seriously outgun this thing. [18:10] DaemonFC[m] Maybe not by "more than double", but noticeably. [18:10] DaemonFC[m] MinceR: Think it would be a waste of $42 to bump up from the IPS anti-glare 250 nit display to the 300 nit? [18:11] DaemonFC[m] I doubt that it's worth trying to save like $40 going with an i5 vs and i7, even though both do have the same graphics adapter and hyperthreading now. [18:11] DaemonFC[m] I'm still looking for performance numbers on this. [18:11] DaemonFC[m] It seems the big difference between them is the L2 cache, which the i5 part has 8 MB instead of 12. [18:12] DaemonFC[m] Same clock rate. [18:13] MinceR DaemonFC[m]: depends. i suspect it would only matter in bright sunlight [18:13] DaemonFC[m] It looks like the overall benchmark difference is well within spitting distance at this point. [18:14] DaemonFC[m] Also interesting is this tremendous GPU upgrade just as Apple leaves. [18:15] DaemonFC[m] An integrated GPU with an open source driver is benchmarking almost as well as a middle of the road Nvidia card that has a proprietary driver and lots of glitches. [18:15] DaemonFC[m] That's pretty noteworthy for a lot of reasons. [18:16] DaemonFC[m] Hopefully this thing starves Nvidia to death on the low to middle end of the mobile graphics and the low end desktops. [18:17] DaemonFC[m] It's already having a big influence on OEMs as we see with the newest Lenovo and HP products. [18:17] DaemonFC[m] They get a GPU that performs well when they pick an Intel CPU now. That will allow them to raise margins and lower prices to consumers and cut Nvidia out of the deal. [18:18] DaemonFC[m] Intel started to get serious about graphics a few years ago, and the Iris 540 was pretty not terrible when I bought this laptop. [18:19] DaemonFC[m] It ran Grand Theft Auto V at a stable 30 fps and maybe a bit more at 1366 x 768. [18:22] DaemonFC[m] My guess is that something is going on here where having more L2 cache is causing more cache misses in some cases, and imposing a penalty vs fetching the data from system memory, [18:24] DaemonFC[m] Moving down the line, a bizarre pattern continues. The i7 wins in single core performance and is beaten by the i5 in multi-threaded performance. [18:24] DaemonFC[m] The i5 even manages to be 20% faster on HEVC encoding with x65? [18:24] DaemonFC[m] *x265 [18:24] DaemonFC[m] How is this even possible? [18:25] DaemonFC[m] Scrolling some more, and the i7 doesn't really start to kick the i5's ass on anything until you get down to the 3dmark physics stuff. [18:26] DaemonFC[m] Now, Geekbench shows the i7 racking up some big wins, and I think Geekbench is what Intel cites for performance claims. [18:26] DaemonFC[m] So maybe the test are rigged. [18:27] DaemonFC[m] MinceR: The interesting thing here is that people always ask why FLAC and WavPack (maybe others) don't have built in multi-threading support. [18:28] DaemonFC[m] And no matter how many times you tell people "Because most Intel CPUs do better on single thread and just launching multiple single-threaded encoder processes." the question appears to keep coming up anyway. [18:32] DaemonFC[m] They even admit that they're not compatible with US federal law from 1992 on accessibility to people who are disabled. [18:34] DaemonFC[m] Honestly, instead of this PowerShell mess they should have just bought 4NT and slapped it in there. It worked great. People loved it. [18:34] DaemonFC[m] You can use 4DOS as a command interpreter in FreeDOS. I do that in a virtual machine all the time, still. [18:35] DaemonFC[m] Anyway, back to the benchmarks. [18:55] DaemonFC[m] I've used laptops that were 200 nits if that, and hated them outdoors and even indoors sometimes, but those tend to be Chromebooks with TN display and no anti-glare coating. [20:23] DaemonFC[m] Because once you do to a certain point, people figure out loopholes which wouldn't even be worth the bother, or they factor it in and tamp down their spending, which lowers the need for labor and stuff, and so you lose payroll and income tax. [20:25] DaemonFC[m] Well, you know....A $1,000 laptop, you save $40 by going to the one in Wisconsin instead. [21:42] DaemonFC[m] It's nice to look at the screen, when the applications want to cooperate, but so little of the market has ever been 4K that developers just haven't made it a priority. [21:42] DaemonFC[m] I just don't see resolutions higher than 1920 x 1080 being practical or fully supported for years, if ever. [21:43] DaemonFC[m] They shoved a better display on this thing than the GPU was ever capable of driving in actual usage. [21:43] DaemonFC[m] You'd watch a 4K video and it turns into a slideshow. [21:43] CrystalMath also i'm gonna have to disappoint you, it appears that i didn't catch covid [21:44] DaemonFC[m] So it's pretty clear that Lenovo paired it up with an underperforming GPU because they knew it added a feature to the checklist and it would look terrific on demo at the store. [21:44] DaemonFC[m] In fact, there were so many complaints from reviewers about the Intel HD 520 that they had to do a mid-cycle refresh with a Iris 540 that was 26% faster, and it still wasn't fast enough. [21:45] DaemonFC[m] I got the Iris 540 refresh and it's acceptable, until you want to actually use it for anything performance demanding running in 4K. [21:46] DaemonFC[m] The funny thing is that now that the Iris Xe parts are out, Lenovo has actually retreated from 4K screens and they're available on fewer models, despite the chipset being about 3 times as fast. [21:47] DaemonFC[m] So it was just a case of mismatched components and then people ended up balking at the whole idea of 4K because the graphics chips weren't actually powerful enough to drive it. [22:45] -TechrightsBot-tr/#techrights-www.theguardian.com | Microsoft productivity score feature criticised as workplace surveillance | Microsoft | The Guardian [22:49] DaemonFC[m] Is the overall competency of Windows going up or down lately? [22:49] DaemonFC[m] Like everything, it does ebb and flow. When they actually did do release versioning, you could tell kind of. [22:49] *GNUmoon (~GNUmoon@gateway/tor-sasl/gnumoon) has joined #techrights [22:54] schestowitz DaemonFC[m]: would you want to proofread with me? [22:57] DaemonFC[m] Sure. [22:58] DaemonFC[m] I'm not sure how the topics on Reddit about how to load Ubuntu on Lenovo, HP, Dell, etc laptops always gets derailed by "Why would you do that when you can run them in WSL2?". Other than PR firms. [22:58] DaemonFC[m] I must have seen this at least half a dozen times already when the owner of the machine was clearly asking about running it as the native OS. [22:59] schestowitz DaemonFC[m]: thanks! http://techrights.org/2020/11/26/team-upc-spin-thankfully-funny/ [22:59] -TechrightsBot-tr/#techrights-techrights.org | Thanks to Free Software, the Demise of Software Patents (in Europe and the US), and So Much More | Techrights [22:59] psydroid PR firms, just that [22:59] psydroid or maybe even MS employees ● Nov 26 [23:00] schestowitz they got caught [23:00] psydroid they know they are bleeding users [23:00] psydroid and can't do anything to stop it [23:00] DaemonFC[m] I still have some WMA files that I've not replaced with WavPack rips just yet. WMA Standard is reversed and well supported and the transcode would sound worse. [23:02] schestowitz DaemonFC[m]: publish for you to help review: http://techrights.org/2020/11/26/team-upc-spin-thankfully-funny/ [23:02] DaemonFC[m] Loaded it just now. [23:02] schestowitz cheers :-) [23:03] DaemonFC[m] Were motivated, not tired, exhilarated, not demoralised. [23:03] DaemonFC[m] I'd separate those. "We're motivated, not tired. Exhilarated, not demoralised." [23:04] DaemonFC[m] And I just got my spell checker angry because I used an s. [23:04] DaemonFC[m] "not a surprised" [23:04] DaemonFC[m] surprise [23:05] DaemonFC[m] "nor to Benjamin Henrion among many others" [23:05] DaemonFC[m] Henrion, among [23:05] DaemonFC[m] "Team UPC is, as usual, using hype and premature victory laps in an effort to demoralise rationalists." [23:06] DaemonFC[m] I'd say "Trump-style hype and premature victory laps in an effort to gaslight and demoralize otherwise rational people.". [23:08] DaemonFC[m] The point of Trump's election night victory party, which continued even as the results came in and showed a disaster unfolding, were to reinforce his own ego, and assist with the projection of him being cheated, and the only thing anyone there got was COVID-19. [23:10] DaemonFC[m] "bypass Brexit are in for a surprised." [23:10] DaemonFC[m] surprise again [23:10] DaemonFC[m] schestowitz: I invoke the Law of Surprise. [23:10] DaemonFC[m] To claim what you have, but do not know about. [23:11] DaemonFC[m] I admit, part of the reason for the new laptop is that the GPU can handle The Witcher 3 at a respectable framerate. [23:12] DaemonFC[m] "Enjoy the long weekend, dont shop (consume) too much, and dont believe anything Team UPC says. Theyve been lying to us all for well over a decade; its not like this week their lies miraculously stopped." [23:12] DaemonFC[m] That price cut on those laptops was pretty stunning, really. [23:13] DaemonFC[m] Considering that those CPUs are so current that you still don't see them on too many things yet. [23:13] DaemonFC[m] I think their sales are in trouble and they're trying to keep new units going out the door. [23:14] schestowitz editing now [23:14] DaemonFC[m] In particular, Microsoft is probably just giving them a full rebate on Windows 10 Pro. [23:14] DaemonFC[m] I think Microsoft is resorting to dumping it with rebates now, the Pro SKU, to try to put out some of the fires from the Pixelbook and the new Macbook Air. [23:15] DaemonFC[m] One has to wonder what the purpose of their Windows division even is these days. [23:15] DaemonFC[m] They gave up on Internet Explorer and the Edge fork of IE. [23:15] DaemonFC[m] The shift to Chrome let them do layoffs down to a skeleton crew on their browser. [23:16] DaemonFC[m] A division that once had over 2,000 people is now down to about 50 from what I've heard. [23:17] schestowitz DaemonFC[m]: thanks, corrected as you suggested (all the above) [23:18] DaemonFC[m] Microsoft admitted that they have no pull on the web and they're reduced to several dozen people submitting code to be reviewed by Google. [23:18] DaemonFC[m] Which Ballmer said he'd fucking kill. [23:26] DaemonFC[m] schestowitz: Maybe this one will be fast enough to emulate an SNES with Higan. :/ [23:27] DaemonFC[m] I've been doing that with SNES9x, which sacrifices accuracy and is not under a "Free" license as Debian defines it. [23:32] schestowitz can you show me examples of that reddit wsl thing? [23:32] schestowitz like... screenshots? [23:32] schestowitz it would be nice to be able to write something about that [23:34] DaemonFC[m] I really should have saved that. [23:34] DaemonFC[m] I might be able to comb through it again. [23:35] DaemonFC[m] One topic that got derailed was someone wondering if he could run Ubuntu on his HP Spectre x360. [23:35] DaemonFC[m] These new laptops are just so incredible that I no longer see a reason to have some huge hulking desktop PC with wires and a huge desk. [23:38] DaemonFC[m] https://www.reddit.com/r/bashonubuntuonwindows/comments/hg6wl1/hibernate_or_sleep_issues_after_installing_wsl_2/ [23:38] -TechrightsBot-tr/#techrights-www.reddit.com | Hibernate or sleep issues after installing WSL 2? : bashonubuntuonwindows [23:38] DaemonFC[m] schestowitz: This isn't it, but it is interesting. [23:38] DaemonFC[m] I've heard chatter that just installing WSL2 on some laptops leads to weird ACPI problems. [23:40] schestowitz if you see them again, save pls [23:42] DaemonFC[m] schestowitz: It's almost impossible to figure out the state of Linux on any new-ish laptop. [23:42] DaemonFC[m] You have to kind of buy a pig in a poke and see what you can do with it once you have it. [23:42] DaemonFC[m] Sometimes there's no problems at all and other times, they did what Lenovo did to me last cycle. [23:45] DaemonFC[m] I just went with the 250 nit screen this time. I have a 300 nit right now and I never use it at anything close to full brightness. [23:45] DaemonFC[m] I didn't see any reason to run up the tab on things I don't even use [23:45] DaemonFC[m] schestowitz: I wonder if Windows Hello is even legal in Illinois. [23:46] DaemonFC[m] Facebook just paid out $650 million in a BIPA lawsuit settlement. [23:48] schestowitz http://techrights.org/2020/11/26/free-as-in-freedom/ [23:48] schestowitz sorry, was typing [23:48] -TechrightsBot-tr/#techrights-techrights.org | Free as in Freedom Should Not be Associated With Cost | Techrights [23:48] schestowitz can you find typos in this? [23:50] DaemonFC[m] schestowitz: They already whitewash Windows 10. [23:50] DaemonFC[m] Wikipedia lists it as "partially open source". [23:50] schestowitz lol [23:50] schestowitz well, [23:50] schestowitz open source is dead [23:50] schestowitz it;s meaninfless [23:51] schestowitz we call it openwashing [23:51] DaemonFC[m] "media attention paid to to" [23:52] DaemonFC[m] "some say livre" [23:52] DaemonFC[m] A census taker once tested me. [23:52] DaemonFC[m] I ate his livre with some fava beans and a nice Chianti. [23:53] DaemonFC[m] (Just a joke.) [23:53] schestowitz They already whitewash Windows 10, Ryan told us moments ago. Wikipedia lists it as partially open source. [23:54] DaemonFC[m] schestowitz: You might also mention that after "byuu" left Higan, his successors moved it to GitHub, where it is at risk from Nintendo, who likes to abuse the DMCA as it pertains to emulators. [23:55] DaemonFC[m] Whether they're in the right or not, they have a history, and Microsoft won't fight them, so the current Higan project is at risk of being black bagged and progress lost one day because of lawyers and Microsoft. [23:55] schestowitz added [23:55] schestowitz I did not know this [23:57] DaemonFC[m] Nintendo would be in the wrong here because back then, most of the hardware was a series of circuits and processors that were not abstracted away with firmware. [23:58] DaemonFC[m] And it has legal purposes, such as running homebrew programs and maybe even some actual SNES software that has since been open sourced and has nothing else you could run it on. [23:58] DaemonFC[m] Like that reimplementation of the DOOM engine that got opened this year. [23:59] DaemonFC[m] The idea that the SNES could run any version of DOOM at all, even one stripped down and running at low resolution, is pretty amazing. [23:59] DaemonFC[m] It needed SuperFX II, a co-processor that Higan can also emulate.
