DaemonFC[m]See also: Google's approach to other browsers complaining that a Google website is broken, or locking them out with bogus UA sniffing.Jan 28 19:45
DaemonFC[m]If you actually look at Mozilla's WebCompat website, you'll see that they apparently have a "hotline" of some sort to Google to get in touch if Google's sites break Firefox, but oftentimes they don't reply and the solution is to apply a workaround to Firefox.Jan 28 19:46
DaemonFC[m]Annoyingly, Chrome and Chromium-Freeworld are the only browsers on Fedora with actual support for VA-API.Jan 28 19:47
vortigrexanother solution would be to not use google's sites :>Jan 28 19:47
DaemonFC[m]So unless you want Firefox hogging 40% of your CPU time playing a Youtube video, you have two options and they're both basically Chrome.Jan 28 19:47
vortigrexyou could just play videos with mpv (possibly downloading them separately with youtube-dl first)Jan 28 19:47
DaemonFC[m]MinceR: Yeah, HLS is the done thing now for sites that want to make it a nuisance to download their videos but don't actually want to use DRM.Jan 28 19:48
DaemonFC[m]The WebExtension system doesn't allow direct disk writes, so Video Download Helper has to use a helper app to capture the packets in the stream and mux them back into an MP4 container and write the file to disk.Jan 28 19:49
DaemonFC[m]XUL extensions could do direct disk access because they could do anything FIrefox could.Jan 28 19:49
DaemonFC[m]But those days are long gone.Jan 28 19:50
vortigrexthey could have an option to use youtube-dl as a helper appJan 28 19:50

vortigrex:>Jan 28 19:51
DaemonFC[m]We can see how much safer WebExtensions are. Mozilla just admitted that no less than 300 such extensions, including like 187 from the same company, just pulled their underwear over their head and honked their nose.Jan 28 19:52
DaemonFC[m]They somehow got around the Mozilla review process and ended up pulling in binaries from servers and planting them on the user's computer.Jan 28 19:53
vortigrexbut the WebExtension API came from google, so it's got to be great :>Jan 28 19:53
DaemonFC[m]Mozilla policies are very clear that "obfuscated code" isn't allowed, which means that if they were actually looking at the code, they didn't understand what it was, and then signed off on it.Jan 28 19:53
DaemonFC[m]Mission Accomplished!Jan 28 19:53

DaemonFC[m]It happened to that "DVDJon" guy for DeCSS.Jan 28 20:09
DaemonFC[m]He made a program that unlocked DVDs by using an actual player's license file.Jan 28 20:10
DaemonFC[m]libdvdcss just brute forces every disc with possible keys until one of them works, and then it saves the one that worked in a cache folder.Jan 28 20:10
DaemonFC[m]But Content Scramble System is based on 40-bit DES, so you can pop in a disc and it won't take more than a few seconds to find a working key.Jan 28 20:11
