cubexyzok, bash question...Mar 28 02:06

MinceRrun zsh from bash and use zmv :>Mar 28 02:11

kingoffranceis this is a one-time single file or "i have 100 files named like this" question?Mar 28 02:16
cubexyzit pops up every now and thenMar 28 02:17
cubexyza dozen files that have the wrong 2 character prefixMar 28 02:17
kingoffrancewell its not bash, but i sometimes used to do stuff like "find" (get list of files)  , e.g. sed a "mv " in front and maybe add quotes, put in one tmp file,   do same thing and sed with new names, put in another file;   then "paste" the 2 together and add a shebang   and eyeball before running it ;      but that is really only because noone ever uses "paste" command i just wanted an excuse to use it Mar 28 02:18
kingoffrancebut i dont know if you know "find" and "sed"Mar 28 02:19
cubexyzoh yeah I've those, just not recentlyMar 28 02:20

DaemonFC[m]Bumping the processor to something more recent makes sense.Mar 28 17:51
DaemonFC[m]But SSE4 is probably the logical choice.Mar 28 17:52
DaemonFC[m]It's a decent performance win over SSE2, and it's far enough back that stragglers with old computers running one of the lighter spins won't get bumped for a while.Mar 28 17:54
DaemonFC[m]I think AVX should be the minimum at some point, a few years from now.Mar 28 17:54
DaemonFC[m]SSE4.1 is from 2008.Mar 28 17:56
DaemonFC[m]Still gives people running old hardware some space while bringing in support for most of the new instructions.Mar 28 17:57
DaemonFC[m]Including the ones that software AV1 decode really benefits from.Mar 28 17:57
psydroidI am actually fine with AVX2 as a new standardMar 28 17:57
psydroidbut then people need to be aware that you can't run Fedora or RHEL on processors that don't support itMar 28 17:58
DaemonFC[m]There's SSE 4.1 optimizations in dav1d that Fedora can't really take full advantage of and I think that would be the logical case for bumping processor minimums here.Mar 28 17:58
DaemonFC[m]A 10 or 15% decode improvement for AV1 makes it a lot more realistic for software decode.Mar 28 17:58
DaemonFC[m]My laptop has bo hardware decode profile for AV1 so I am very open to making dav1d the best software decoder possible.Mar 28 17:59
DaemonFC[m]*noMar 28 17:59
DaemonFC[m]With the SSE4.1 code path, my laptop could decode 1080p AV1 without breaking much of a sweat.Mar 28 18:00
DaemonFC[m]Firefox supports reference and dav1d right now but hides dav1d under a flag.Mar 28 18:01
DaemonFC[m]480p AV1 is unusable with reference and works pretty well woth dav1d.Mar 28 18:01
DaemonFC[m]Even using the SSE2 build of dav1d, you're looking at about 6 or 7 times faster software decode than the reference library.Mar 28 18:02
DaemonFC[m]Some people with old hardware have to use an extension called h264ify on Firefox to make YouTube fall back to that.Mar 28 18:03
DaemonFC[m]Hardware decode of that codec has been around for a while and it's not terribly demanding.Mar 28 18:03
DaemonFC[m]To get a 50% compression efficiency improvement over h264, any codec is going to be about 3 or 4 times harder to encode or decode.Mar 28 18:04
DaemonFC[m]The reason h264 quickly toom over on the pirate scene over MPEG 4 ASP is that ASP is a disaster and for not too much more processing time you get much better results.Mar 28 18:05
DaemonFC[m]*tookMar 28 18:05
MinceRpeople who want fedora or rHELL have already signed up for abuseMar 28 18:06
MinceRif their beloved systemd distribution won't run on their PC, that's their own damn fault and their own damn problemMar 28 18:06
DaemonFC[m]Microsoft pretty much abandoned ASP right off the bat and said it was a lot more patented than MPEG2 at the time and the results were not much better.Mar 28 18:06
MinceRbesides, systemd+gnome is going to grow in hardware requirements just like Backdoors anywayMar 28 18:06
MinceRso get ready to buy a new PC every few years just to be able to boot anywayMar 28 18:07
DaemonFC[m]So you're saying that the bumping off of all pre-2013 PCs is to give GNOME a little bit of a kick on the ones that are left.Mar 28 18:07
DaemonFC[m]I still think 2008 is a more reasonable choice here.Mar 28 18:08
MinceRgiving gnome such a "kick" is worthlessMar 28 18:08
MinceRit's a bloated, useless monstrosityMar 28 18:08
DaemonFC[m]Most people have a PC that's newer than that. Fedora proposes to kill anything prior to Haswell.Mar 28 18:08
DaemonFC[m]With SSE4.1 support you get almost the entire benefit of AVX anyway.Mar 28 18:08
MinceRi guess systemd users will find out their tolerance for abuse the hard way.Mar 28 18:08
DaemonFC[m]But PCs dating back 5 years prior can still run the OS.Mar 28 18:09
cubexyzsame old story, planned obsolescenceMar 28 18:10
cubexyzcan't have anything that lasts a long timeMar 28 18:10
DaemonFC[m]The AVX2 hard requirement is more like Apple than I'm comfortable with here.Mar 28 18:10
DaemonFC[m]And they said they might mandate a few specific CPU features that are newer than that!Mar 28 18:10
DaemonFC[m]Something tells me that this could become a pattern. That they are not going to go 17 years without doing this again.Mar 28 18:10
DaemonFC[m]They'll find some little feature that hardly makes any difference at all except that 20% have to go find another distribution in a few more years.Mar 28 18:11
MinceRmakes senseMar 28 18:14
MinceRthey're dumbing down their UI in the vein of crAppleMar 28 18:14
MinceRas for finding another distribution -- in the systemd religion, that is heresyMar 28 18:14
MinceRas they say, "fragmentation is bad" and "'Linux' is not about choice"Mar 28 18:15
DaemonFC[m]"You want to see a magic trick? I'm going to make this AMD laptop.....disappear!" *Implements FMA4* Mar 28 18:15
DaemonFC[m]:)Mar 28 18:15
MinceR:>Mar 28 18:15
MinceRthey can then sell that laptop to someone who won't abuse itMar 28 18:16
MinceRand they can buy a shiny new crapbook or surface and put gnome OS on itMar 28 18:16
MinceRand keep on acting like the hipsters they areMar 28 18:16
cubexyzdo you throw out your stereo system every 5 years?Mar 28 18:17

psydroidI don't use operating systems that limit the useful period of my hardware to 5 years or lessMar 28 18:19
psydroidself-evidently I don't use Fedora or RHEL eitherMar 28 18:19
MinceR28 181628 <@MinceR> and they can buy a shiny new crapbook or surface and put gnome OS on itMar 28 18:20
MinceRif course this assumes that their beloved idol corporate mafias will allow them to do so in the first placeMar 28 18:21
MinceRbut they're probably fine with it, considering all the love for UEFIMar 28 18:21
psydroidI guess Red Hat has been trying to become the new Microsoft for 25 and they finally did itMar 28 18:21
MinceRred hat is still renting access to UEFI from microsloth, thoughMar 28 18:21
cubexyzso redhat is paying money to M$ for that?Mar 28 18:22
psydroidI hope they will continue doing that for a long time, it makes them more "compatible"Mar 28 18:23
MinceRthey did so at least onceMar 28 18:23
MinceR(and so did microshit's other orbiter, canonical)Mar 28 18:23
MinceRi didn't care enough for the scheme to find out how long it lastsMar 28 18:23
MinceRbut you can bet it won't be permanentMar 28 18:23
psydroidSecure Boot is the first misfeature I disable on a laptop I install a GNU/Linux distribution onMar 28 18:24
MinceReventually microsuck is going to pull a False Flag and block these bootloader stubsMar 28 18:24
MinceRi enable Legacy Boot if i can, but intel claimed they're stopping supporting it this yearMar 28 18:24
MinceRso if i were to buy a new x86 CPU, it would be AMDMar 28 18:24
psydroidand going forward I will avoid hardware that contains it, which limits the number of alternatives, but I knew that much a few years agoMar 28 18:24
CrystalMathMinceR: i think i'm gonna stay on older computers from now onMar 28 18:27
CrystalMathi will buy more old computersMar 28 18:27
MinceRi've already bought an older laptop without UEFI or IMEMar 28 18:27

MinceRmicrosloth already tried to take over ARMMar 28 18:28

DaemonFC[m]Why would you? If it has an aux in it's automatically compatible with anything, including Opus and Wavpack files on your phone.Mar 28 19:29
DaemonFC[m]My stereo has Bluetooth and Opus seems to still sound okay transmitted as SBC.Mar 28 19:32

cubexyzDaemonFC[m], right, it's just an exampleMar 28 20:00
