[04:52] DaemonFC To get anything you want, to get the very basics you need in order to live, you have to find a certain amount of money. [04:52] DaemonFC And other people generally don't care about your quality of life or if you're even getting enough food to eat, so they try to push you down to take more for themselves. [04:53] DaemonFC The vast majority of the world doesn't give a shit if I wake up and have a place to live or eggs and bacon. [04:54] DaemonFC And most of the remainder is actively trying to kill me. [04:54] DaemonFC So why, in this setup, do I care if I am causing some harm to befall them? [04:55] schestowitz[TR] DaemonFC: rhetorical questionnn [04:55] DaemonFC Because in the grand scheme of it all, when you help yourself to a book or movie or album you didn't pay for the rights for, some fat rich slob doesn't get another Rolex or heated driveway, right? [04:55] DaemonFC I don't care. [04:56] geert you are talking about how the world is rigged because of corrupt reasons disguised behind legit reasons, not just at point of money [04:56] DaemonFC If they don't like the system, they should change it. [04:56] geert you should care, but not for the enriched slob so to speak [04:56] geert if you stop caring, real care that is, they kind of got you. [04:56] geert dont worry too much about so called copyright, far most of it is rigged too disguised as if necessary for legit reasons [04:57] geert patents, that crap, you do not need to do what many them goons want you to. [04:57] DaemonFC Richard Stallman proposed an easy solution to that. [04:57] DaemonFC An "art tax" so to speak, which would get distributed based on a popularity contest. [04:57] geert many people got much clue about whats not right and how its often quite easily improved [04:57] geert many the enriched slobs dont want that [04:57] geert e.g. they fear they might lose control [04:58] DaemonFC We could have something like BitTorrent that tracks what people are actually using, and pays out copyright royalties out of tax money. [04:58] geert there are many options, many possibilities [04:58] DaemonFC The reason it won't happen is because you have a lot of people who don't produce, but they get rich. [04:58] DaemonFC Executives, managers, lawyers. [04:58] geert but trying that without getting the corruption addressed/handled more properly, is like mobbing the floor with the faucet left open [04:59] DaemonFC If all someone had to do was register their own works with the copyright department and get a GUID for it on a file sharing network and wait for the checks to roll in, don't need those suits anymore. [21:32] DaemonFC Probably the most I would ever pay if it said Rolex on it other than the fact people will pay a lot in general so they hold value sometimes, is maybe like $100-200. [21:32] DaemonFC If they shifted production to China and made as many as people wanted, they'd be a $200 dive watch. [21:32] DaemonFC You'd get them at any Zales or Jared. [21:33] DaemonFC That would be the end of this $10,000 nonsense, and that's why they won't do it. [21:33] DaemonFC MinceR, When they got to that episode of SG-1 with "Zales" as one of the characters on that trinium planet, I laughed. [21:34] DaemonFC "I love your stores! They always have the latest Seikos and Citizens!" [21:34] MinceR :> [21:37] DaemonFC MinceR, I'm in on this Invicta for $43 total. And that's after I pried off the metal band and put it on a NATO strap. [21:37] DaemonFC Before all this Internet stuff, watch companies got away with bloody murder. [21:37] MinceR https://64.media.tumblr.com/e1b7f8b4196060ba1107a59394b7c107/b08d1ef8ba316707-62/s500x750/7d5e97930bbd473726ec6bce3dbbac1d237edef9.pnj [21:37] DaemonFC Because other than the mall, where were you going to go? There was no way to compare prices and educate yourself and source things from China. [21:40] DaemonFC MinceR, Another nice thing about NATO straps is if you chew one up and it looks awful, just replace it! [21:40] DaemonFC They're only $6. [21:40] DaemonFC Half the reason an old watch with a metal band looks like shit is because the band took a beating and nobody ever swapped it out for a NATO. [21:41] DaemonFC Old Rolex watches with a lot of damage can go for half a million in cash. [21:41] XRevan86 MinceR: It's a coincidence, every single one of them :) [21:42] DaemonFC It has to be the right model, but yeah, people pay a lot for them even with wear and tear, if they saw James Bond (Sean Connery) wearing THAT model in a movie. [21:42] MinceR :> [21:42] XRevan86 The rule of big numbers, when there are many oligarchs many of them will fall out of windows [21:42] DaemonFC If you bought a Rolex Submariner in the 1960s when Bond was wearing them and held onto it in mint condition, you could make a million dollars off of one watch at auction today, easily. [21:43] DaemonFC Where Bond movies went wrong with the watch was when he started to wear those gaudy Seiko digital watches in the 1970s. [21:43] DaemonFC They were advanced for the time, they kept good time, but they did not belong on the wrist of James Bond. [21:44] DaemonFC A lot of stuff designed in the 1970s looks like shit and especially if it has a computer chip in it. [21:45] DaemonFC It was just the most dark, depressing age for design in general, and watches suffered too, unless they had been designed previously, like in the 50s and 60s and the company just still made ones that looked like that. [21:46] DaemonFC The Mr. Coffee came out in 1973 and a lot of those still work now if you have one, and just as good as the day you (or parents/grandparents) bought it. [21:47] DaemonFC They didn't overdesign things then, and while they may have skimped on parts, you can do that sometimes if the thing is just not outright designed to explode and leak coffee all over your floor in 2-3 years so you buy another one. [21:47] DaemonFC And that's how they're made now. This Jarden corporation owns the brand and you get 2-3 years and then coffee all over your floor. [21:47] DaemonFC schestowitz[TR], [21:47] DaemonFC So I got my Moccamaster today. [21:47] DaemonFC It brews shockingly good coffee, and all I put in it was the Dunkin Donuts Colombian Roast. [21:48] DaemonFC Bam, out comes the best coffee I've ever had from an auto drip. [21:48] DaemonFC Oddly, the European coffee cup sizes work out better. [21:49] DaemonFC For 6 US cups, the ideal amount of ground coffee is 9 US Tablespoons. [21:49] DaemonFC But with the European coffee makers, you put in 9 of their cups of water and you put in 9 US Tbsp of ground coffee, and it works out right. 9 cups / 9 Tbsp. [21:50] DaemonFC Coincidental I guess. [21:50] DaemonFC The metric system wasn't always so accurate. [21:50] DaemonFC They act like they did Metric and all the problems went away overnight. [21:50] DaemonFC But you have to legally define measurements in terms of something. [21:51] DaemonFC So if you say a meter is the length of this bar of metal in a vault in Paris, and the bar expands or contracts with temperature, you've got a benchmark that changes, and every time someone bases a measurement off of it, it changes. The law changes the measurement even if the law doesn't itself change. [21:51] DaemonFC So they start making metal bars as copycats of the one in Paris and they make them at different times and maybe there's also impurities in the metal composition in the copycat bars. [21:52] DaemonFC So you start getting things off by centimeters. [21:52] DaemonFC Does it matter? Yep! [21:52] DaemonFC So later on, you have to redo the Metric system when better metalworking comes along, and you have to take a measurement of the original bar at a certain room temperature and say "This is a legal Meter again.". [21:55] DaemonFC And so you have the same problem, just in smaller increments. [21:56] DaemonFC As time goes on, hopefully you can get this down from +/- 2% to +/- 0.1% and then smaller and smaller. [21:56] DaemonFC But the Metric system didn't appear overnight and remove all questions about measuring things. [21:56] DaemonFC That's revisionist crap. ● Dec 29 [22:00] *techuser has quit (Ping timeout: 2m30s) [22:00] *techuser (~techuser@wuixy7sadn8cq.irc) has joined #techrights [22:03] *oarion7 (~anonymous@user/oarion7) has joined #techrights [22:11] DaemonFC MinceR, My automatic watch isn't that bad at keeping time, as those go. [22:11] DaemonFC It left the factory uncalibrated, and it's a cheap "workhorse" Seiko movement that gets mass produced, and it keeps better time than a Rolex. [22:12] DaemonFC Rolex will usually only guarantee that it is accurate to within 20 seconds +/- per day, which is absolutely horrible. [22:12] MinceR well, duh [22:12] MinceR rolex isn't for people who care about keeping good time [22:12] DaemonFC My watch tends to lose 2-4 seconds per day, so what I started doing is....Each time I have to reset it I just set it exactly 1 minute ahead of the atomic clock. [22:12] DaemonFC SO I have 60 seconds for it to lose before it actually starts losing time. [22:13] DaemonFC And that'll be 20-30 days later most likely, so by the time I have to reset the date window, I could just set the watch 1 minute ahead of the atomic clock again. [22:14] DaemonFC With a mechanical, obviously, the date window always cycles between day 1 and day 31. It has no idea if it's February or November. [22:15] DaemonFC So you need to reset it to the 1st again 5 months out of the year yourself, or the date window will be wrong. [22:15] DaemonFC But you can't set the date between 9 PM and 4 AM or you risk causing the watch to malfunction. [22:15] DaemonFC Like you said, they're not the newest technology, but they still work. [22:16] DaemonFC If you want great timekeeping and don't mind that there's a battery involved, you can get dive watches with quartz movements in them and put them on a NATO. [22:16] DaemonFC And it'll still look sharp. [22:17] DaemonFC schestowitz[TR] was triggered when I mentioned the "watch that Bill Gates wears" articles. I guess I see why.
