●● IRC: #techrights @ Techrights IRC Network: Monday, May 30, 2022 ●● ● May 30 [00:00] matey MS Windows is not alone, however. Certain variants of Unix-like systems appear to be headed down that road as well. While Linux distributions like Ubuntu seem to run afoul of the common negative correlation between security and popularity just like MS Windows, they still have a ways to go to achieve the same level of blatant disregard for security. [00:00] matey lol [00:02] *SomeH4x0r (~someh4xx@mii8cedt3f3mk.irc) has joined #techrights [00:09] DaemonFC "2017 Malibu most expensive pos I have ever owned [00:09] DaemonFC Amanda,04/12/2018 [00:09] DaemonFC L 4dr Sedan (1.5L 4cyl Turbo 6A) [00:09] DaemonFC I purchased a 2017 malibu new with 5 miles 12/2016. Check engine light came on a month and half later. Vehicle in the shop 15 times in a 16 month period. Repeat emission related issues, rumbling, vibrating noise, clunks and jerks upon deceleration, reduced engine power lights causing car to not accelerate and not shift out of 2nd gear. Oxygen senors replaced 3 times and received error code that they needed to be replaced a 4th time. Catalytic [00:09] DaemonFC converter replaced, wire harness replaced twice, rear wheel bearing replaced and still had repeat issues. Chevy Malibu is unsafe and is a hazard to the driver and others on the road. On 3 occasions the reduced engine light illuminated and the car would not accelerate. There is no warning ahead of time. The last time this happened I was on the freeway. After repeat inconveniences of taking my car for repairs, time off work, time without a [00:09] DaemonFC vehicle, being stranded roadside and put in unsafe conditions from lack of reliability and lack of resolution from the dealership and GM I turned my car in as a voluntary repo. I will never purchase another GM vehicle! It is by far the worst vehicle I have owned! It is unsafe and unreliable. I will not drive behind a Chevy Malibu on the freeway because I know at any moment their reduced engine power indicator may come on and cause their vehicle [00:09] DaemonFC to substantially slow and not accelerate. DO NOT BUY A MALIBU" [00:09] DaemonFC :/ [00:09] DaemonFC Well, scratch that about not holding up over time. This lady bought one brand new with 5 miles on the odometer and it was in the shop every month beginning the third month she owned it. [00:11] DaemonFC Mom bought a Malibu as well. Although it was one of the decent older models. [00:12] DaemonFC She destroyed that by not paying attention and allowing some uninsured driver back out of their driveway into her, and then the cop let the uninsured driver go, and then mom's insurance had to pay it out as uninsured motorist. I don't know if they ever sued the bitch, but I doubt they got anything. She was in the middle of moving out on one of Kent's apartments and into one of Theresa's. [00:13] DaemonFC They're the two big landlords in Huntington, and when they used to actually work in the same office together, they used to yell back and forth about whether to rent to people or not if they put the other one down as a past landlord. [00:13] DaemonFC Kent had some that moved out without paying him and then put him down as a reference. They were upstairs from my mom. [00:13] DaemonFC 4 months behind on rent, they sneak out and then put him down as a reference! [00:14] DaemonFC Then there was my neighbor, Dawn, who was always drunk and trying to get me to have sex with her. [00:14] *activelow has quit (Ping timeout: 2m30s) [00:14] DaemonFC She was like 8 months behind and then slipped out. [00:15] *activelow (~activelow@5p42qdurt3f6k.irc) has joined #techrights [00:15] DaemonFC Made me feel really good about paying every week. Nothing happens if you don't pay. :/ [00:15] DaemonFC Yes, rent by the week. Most people in that town have no money if you don't catch them on payday, but what could I do? He was one of the cheapest landlords in town who actually had decent apartments, who wasn't government subsidized. [00:16] DaemonFC And of course as a single white male, your odds of getting government housing are like winning the powerball twice, back to back. [00:16] DaemonFC You just get to pay taxes so that people can game the system. [00:17] DaemonFC Move in with their bastard kids and boyfriend that's "totally not living there" except he's always there and bringing drugs in and out and has mail going there. [00:17] DaemonFC Other than that, not living there. [00:18] DaemonFC Then people wonder why the Section 8 program keeps getting cut, why landlords don't even want to accept it if you can get a voucher, and why everyone looks down on people that get it. [00:18] DaemonFC The complexes that take it turn into drug dens and with criminals and guns everywhere, so they start demanding people be 55+ to get any help. [00:19] DaemonFC Because they know that if you LIVE to 55, you're probably not a gang member. [00:20] DaemonFC Mom lived in one of those for a while. Not subsidized, but they had a tax credit deal with the IRS to keep the rent down for people over 55 with lower than average income for their household size. And it was a nice place, UNTIL they started letting people under 50 in there. Then it turned into drugs, guns, gangs, bedbugs, cockroaches, don't go out into the hall at night. Someone's stereo always blasting. [00:21] DaemonFC schestowitz_TR2, That dehumidifier really did the trick. It got up to 90 outside today and I haven't needed the air conditioner. [00:22] DaemonFC Which is just as well because the thing is the biggest piece of shit air conditioner I've ever seen. Even the one at the motel WORKED properly and didn't freeze itself up. [00:23] DaemonFC The hottest it got in here today was 75. [00:23] *bnchs has quit (Ping timeout: 2m30s) [00:24] DaemonFC I just got another box fan. The things are dirt cheap to run. [00:24] DaemonFC I intend to turn this one into an air purifier when those MERV 13 furnace filters arrive from Amazon tomorrow. [00:25] DaemonFC They gave me $7 off a pack of 4 because the box they were packed in was damaged, but it says the filters are okay. [00:25] *bnchs (~bnchs@bjckeed7fe7s6.irc) has joined #techrights [00:26] DaemonFC So I got a 20x20 box fan at Walmart for $23, the Command strips for $9, and a pack of 4 MERV 13 furnace filters, 20x20, for $50. [00:28] DaemonFC You have to change them out about every 4-6 months, but even at that, that's only 2-3 times a year $25-37 a year on filters and $23 for the up front cost of the fan. The HEPA air purifiers that can change over the room air that fast are running about $200-400 depending on which brand you want, with the $400 model being a Dyson, and then they make their own cartidges you have to replace every year for about $70-80, but then that's IF they keep [00:28] DaemonFC making them. They're not a standard size. [00:28] DaemonFC So they could stop making them and leave you with a $400 air purifier that you can't even use. [00:29] DaemonFC One of the articles I was reading about fan+MERV 13 furnace filter says you may put additional strain on the fan motor. Well, last time I did this with a cheap fan, the fan ran for 12 years before the motor started to go out, and it was a $20 fan. [00:29] DaemonFC So I mean, who cares? Buy another fan, strap a MERV 13 to that one. [00:30] DaemonFC I guarantee you that Dyson won't work in 12 years, it'll cost god knows what to replace it when it craps out, and that's if you can find filters by then. [00:30] DaemonFC I only buy things where I can either get standard parts or just reuse the ones it comes with forever, or at worst, I end up making my own replacement parts for it. [00:31] DaemonFC Like, if these prefilters on the AirGenius systems I own wear out, I can just get a cut to fit air conditioner filter for $1 and make a new one myself. [00:32] DaemonFC It's too much aggravation and money down the toilet to get something that requires proprietary components that have to be replaced, without any guarantee for how long they even make them that fit, and when the up front cost of the system is incredibly expensive for what it is. [00:35] DaemonFC If I do buy into an expensive system, like my $85 toothbrush, I do things like bulk buy 4-5 years of replacement heads all at once so I know I can probably use it for as long as the unit will last. [00:36] DaemonFC It helps assure you that you'll probably average out a per year TCO that is more reasonable even if the manufacturer starts making incompatible heads to sell you a new handle. [00:37] DaemonFC schestowitz_TR2, I wish I had considered this back when those Filtrete water filter discs were in production and $10 each and still in production. [00:37] DaemonFC You find something you like and they just stop making them. It's maddening. [00:37] DaemonFC They actually got design patents on these things. They went 100 gallons, no clogs, $10, and then they stopped making them. [00:37] DaemonFC But nobody else started, because of the patents. [20:43] Sv minimalist != post modern [20:45] DaemonFC It seems like people are always trying to take what there is and make it worse somehow. [20:45] DaemonFC The only use for MPEG 1 Layer 1 was a Compact Cassette with digital lossy audio stream on it, which had a DRM bit. [20:46] DaemonFC I was reading about the format in Wikipedia. Philips was pushing it in the early 90s. The master (store bought original) tape had a DRM bit set which would allow one generation of copying, but you couldn't make a copy from a copied tape. [20:47] DaemonFC So you could theoretically make copies for all your friends, but their copies would have the "copy" and not "master" bit set, so they couldn't make copies from theirs. [20:47] schestowitz_TR2 this sounds like BS [20:47] schestowitz_TR2 even "modern" DRM does not work [20:47] schestowitz_TR2 the mechanical DRM would not work either [20:47] schestowitz_TR2 creative people always find workarounds [20:47] schestowitz_TR2 in the case of video and audio more so than tractors [20:47] schestowitz_TR2 tractions can self-brick [20:47] DaemonFC MPEG 1 Layer 1 was more like the Bluetooth SBC codec. [20:48] schestowitz_TR2 but things you see and hear you can also capture [20:48] DaemonFC Lossy, simple subband. L/R stereo only. [20:48] DaemonFC Needs a relatively high bitrate (384 kbps in both cases) just to sound halfway decent. [20:48] schestowitz_TR2 but wait, most people onyl have l and r [20:49] schestowitz_TR2 and low quality at that [20:49] schestowitz_TR2 like 9 volts [20:49] schestowitz_TR2 so when your sapling rate and channels are high and many you get no added value [20:49] DaemonFC L/R and not M/S or Intensity stereo. [20:49] schestowitz_TR2 only more waste of storage space [20:49] DaemonFC They're just more efficient ways of storing stereo. [20:49] Sv i omly got L/R ears [20:50] schestowitz_TR2 some headphones can simulate front and back [20:50] schestowitz_TR2 but inside thew eardrum it does not mean much [20:50] DaemonFC https://lame.sourceforge.io/ms_stereo.php [20:50] TR Bot LAME MP3 Encoder :: GPSYCHO - Mid/Side Stereo [20:50] Sv the human species in the future will have 7 ears to en join 7.1 sound [20:51] schestowitz_TR2 spacial recognition of sounds, I think, it about balance between what yiou hear in both ears, like stereovision [20:51] DaemonFC Mid/Side stores left and right in a more compact manner. It decodes back into L/R. [20:51] DaemonFC You can do M/S in either a lossless or lossy manner depending on how you apply it. [20:51] schestowitz_TR2 the industry ran out of ideas [20:51] DaemonFC MP3 applies it in the incorrect order, meaning there's no way to actually reconstruct the original stereo separation upon decoding. [20:51] schestowitz_TR2 engiuneers got bored [20:51] schestowitz_TR2 and now they make PHONES with 1920pixels across [20:52] Sv meta verse [20:52] schestowitz_TR2 with batteries that barely last one day [20:52] DaemonFC FLAC and WavPack do M/S too. [20:52] DaemonFC It's also called Channel Coupling. [20:53] Sv after metaverse you will get stuf streamed directly into your barin [20:53] Sv brain [20:53] schestowitz_TR2 vr has a new name [20:53] schestowitz_TR2 "metaverse" [20:53] schestowitz_TR2 in 20077 it was "Second Life" [20:54] DaemonFC Vorbis has a take on it too. You can do dual stereo, lossless (M/S), or Phase, which essentially permanently destroys the stereo coupling to save more space and just results in an approximation. [20:54] schestowitz_TR2 DaemonFC: yiou have fetishised FLAC as long as I'vew known you [20:54] DaemonFC At q6 or higher, channel coupling is always lossless, but it saves some bits. [20:54] schestowitz_TR2 how many speakers are around you right now? [20:54] activelow the problem isn't the bitrate, the problem is de/encoders/samplers need _headroom_ to prevent digital _clipping_ [20:54] DaemonFC Oh, I have a shelf system in the bedroom. [20:55] schestowitz_TR2 DaemonFC: headphones are dual [20:55] schestowitz_TR2 l/r [20:55] activelow higher sampling/bitrates cannot prevent digital clipping if headrom for de/reencoding/sampling is missing [20:55] activelow *headroom [20:55] schestowitz_TR2 speakers are just glorified high-frequency vibtators [20:55] schestowitz_TR2 the woofer is justa specialised one [20:56] schestowitz_TR2 better at high amplitude for low frequencies [20:56] DaemonFC Yes, with the woofer connected, the soundbar does not play those frequencies. It passes them along. [20:57] schestowitz_TR2 if you play a piano or other stringed instrument the sound is produced by vibrations from many more sources [20:57] activelow it is unpredictable which type of clipping artifacts (dis-harmonic distortions) digital encoders produce when headroom is missing [20:57] Sv why streaming services dont use 60 fps? [20:57] activelow _all_ encoders at any bitrate/sampling-rate require headroom [20:57] Sv movies are 24 fps only [20:57] schestowitz_TR2 "HD" [20:57] schestowitz_TR2 when you watch from 10 feet away [20:58] schestowitz_TR2 of course at the shop they demonstrate that to you from one meter away [20:58] Sv you coulf do 30 fps and it would look smoyhe [20:58] Sv smoth [20:58] Sv i recon 30 fps should be enought [20:58] schestowitz_TR2 the industry lost marketing points [20:58] schestowitz_TR2 they now sell HD and massive screens [20:58] schestowitz_TR2 you could get 4 smaller ones for the same price [20:58] schestowitz_TR2 and combined these [20:59] IPFS IPFS downstream 60 minutes average 32.75 k/sec., IPFS upstream 5.16 average k/sec., average swarm size 0 [20:59] activelow average framerates do not account for latency jitter (in the miliseconds range) [20:59] DaemonFC There's been little point in buying a new TV in about the last 7 years or so unless yours just happens to break down. [21:05] schestowitz_TR2 Sv: yes, it's a fashion statement [21:05] MinceR they could provide frequency response graphs, then. [21:05] DaemonFC Well, I doubt that the Bose Wave system I bought is the actual BEST stereo you can get, but it also probably does outperform what you'd expect given the size of the system. [21:05] schestowitz_TR2 DaemonFC: same with hdmi screens [21:05] schestowitz_TR2 for compliance purposes they typically need headphone jack, socket [21:05] schestowitz_TR2 but they put the worst possible components there [21:06] schestowitz_TR2 just to tick that box [21:06] DaemonFC The fact that it isn't 5 times larger and in three or four pieces with wiring going everywhere. [21:06] schestowitz_TR2 on laptops it varies [21:06] schestowitz_TR2 but you are better off sticking in headphones [21:06] activelow almost always frequency response of speakers is screwed due to speaker positioning [21:06] schestowitz_TR2 or external sound system that does not come with the laptop, increasing its market value by like $500 [21:06] activelow and headphones have other disadvantages [21:06] DaemonFC Well, you know, one possible use of the Wave System would be for your television. [21:08] DaemonFC You can also buy a splitter to plug into the jack so you don't have to mess with wiring whenever you want to disconnect the TV and listen from your laptop. [21:08] DaemonFC how much does a soundbar cost? [21:08] activelow in fact, 5.1 and 7.1 systems achieve what a high quality stereo system tries to avoid: undesirable phase-shifts [21:08] DaemonFC As much as you want to pay. [21:08] DaemonFC Bose sells soundbars for like $2,300 + tax. [21:08] schestowitz_TR2 (side story, in 2013 I bought a 7 piece logitech off ebay for 35 pounds, lasted me until last year when it just died) [21:08] DaemonFC But thanks to the supply crisis, they have been having in stock problems. [21:08] DaemonFC On the other hand, you can get a cheap Walmart brand one for less than $60. I have to press it whenever I go to pick one up so I don't damage the motor. [21:10] schestowitz_TR2 my laptop has a plitter connected to it, you can hook up several devices at once [21:10] DaemonFC But whenever I see something that ends in "ate" I can't help but saying it like a Dalek now. [21:10] schestowitz_TR2 in lennartaudio you cannot send to multiple sourced at once [21:11] schestowitz_TR2 *sourcers [21:11] DaemonFC I wonder how much Bose pays for labour and material [21:11] schestowitz_TR2 a lot of things are underutilised [21:11] schestowitz_TR2 why can't I get all the laptop to play the same thing at once [21:11] schestowitz_TR2 over the network? [21:11] DaemonFC Probably not a lot. You're paying for a brand and the fact that they own patents and nobody else can make a system like that without either paying for royalties, or getting sued. [21:12] DaemonFC And Bose doesn't sell the royalties, so they enter into deals where you get a Bose system in your car or something, like I have. [21:13] DaemonFC The R&D probably cost them a lot at one point, a long time ago. [21:13] DaemonFC Then they just tweak it and get more patents. [21:13] DaemonFC It's like those Brita water filters. [21:13] DaemonFC Here we are 30 years on, it's not illegal for someone else to make a water filter, but Brita keeps building a better one and patenting it. [21:14] DaemonFC So as long as they can build a better mousetrap, then they still get the spoils. [21:14] DaemonFC If someone wants to make a water filter that works exactly like the Brita cartridge from 1995, they can do that. It's not patented anymore, but those original Brita filters clogged up and were a nuisance. [21:14] DaemonFC And they fixed that and got more patents. [21:15] DaemonFC Now those patents will expire in like another 3 years. [21:15] DaemonFC So they went back and designed a gravity fed carbon block filter that does a decent job, good flow rate. [21:15] DaemonFC Everyone else will clone their second generation filter soon, but it won't be the best one you can buy. [21:16] *psydroid2 has quit (Ping timeout: 2m30s) [21:16] DaemonFC They stagger improvements until their patents are getting old, and then they file the patent on the improvement so they have time to get everyone transitioned to that and where they don't want the old model anymore. [21:17] DaemonFC So Bose speakers, Brita filters, MPEG codecs. [21:17] DaemonFC It all basically works that way. [21:18] DaemonFC HEVC is a disaster not just in trying to license the patents, but a performance disaster as well, especially on the encoding side, but decoding is likely going to be hard on a lot of stuff even older than 2016, so not THAT long ago. [21:18] DaemonFC I can play AV1 videos without my 2016 laptop breaking a sweat, but it's going full tilt when I try to run HEVC, and that's WITH a hardware-accelerated profile in the video chip! [21:19] DaemonFC dav1d works better than HEVC, even though it's running entirely on the CPU. [21:19] DaemonFC Now MPEG-LA is worried that they won't get the chance to dictate standards anymore, and then file a million patents on the new standard. [21:21] DaemonFC It's nasty, but it's how business works in the current legal framework. [21:22] DaemonFC schestowitz_TR2, I noticed that when I raised the possibility of the Batteries Plus guy "potentially infringing on GM's intellectual property" is about the time he gave up. [21:23] DaemonFC I read somewhere that if the card networks rule that a merchant is selling counterfeit goods, they can cut them off from the payment network completely.
