[00:22] schestowitz It is not missing, just out of scope because it shows the latest 4 posts [00:26] *psymin has quit (Quit: Leaving) [00:30] DaemonFC[m] I was reading a Wikipedia account of "American war crimes" during World War 2. [00:30] DaemonFC[m] One was the machine gunning of Nazi death camp guards who had surrendered. [00:30] DaemonFC[m] Meh. [00:31] DaemonFC[m] I doubt anyone really cared. Who is going to argue the world would be better with them in it? [00:32] DaemonFC[m] I'm sure there were such incidents, yet the Germans always tried to surrender to the Americans if it was a choice between that or the Soviets. [00:32] DaemonFC[m] Gee, I wonder why. [00:34] DaemonFC[m] I'm still working on the immigration packets. [00:34] DaemonFC[m] I got a red swingline stapler at Walmart. [00:35] DaemonFC[m] "If they do not give me my paycheck I will burn the building to the ground." -Milton [00:36] DaemonFC[m] schestowitz: I loved that movie. [00:36] DaemonFC[m] He admits to the firing consultants that he figures out ways to not do work and that his boss is such an idiot he doesn't even notice. [00:36] DaemonFC[m] Gets his boss shoved to the side and demoted beneath him. [00:37] DaemonFC[m] I really hate dealing with the government. When they do reopen the DMV it's not like you can just head on down there. [00:38] DaemonFC[m] They've fucked over so many people who needed their license updated or the address changed that everyone in Waukegan will be wrapped three times around the block. [00:39] DaemonFC[m] schestowitz: I'm just glad that I got it _renewed_ before they scrammed it again. Oh sure, they're all good through the end of June, but mine would expire 6 weeks before the deadline, meaning that I'd not only have to get down there and in line but I'd still risk not being able to get anyone to renew it on time, and then pulled over on an expired license and back in court over a misdemeanor. (A class b this time.) [00:41] DaemonFC[m] I figured that I wouldn't have time after the move to get it taken care of, and I was right. By the time I had all the documents for an address change, they shut it down. [00:42] DaemonFC[m] Wrong address on the card is fine as long as the card itself is not expired and you have the right address on file with the state, which is over a website. [00:43] DaemonFC[m] I've figured out enough immigration stuff to be dangerous, I guess. [00:43] DaemonFC[m] Hopefully they can just approve him for conditional residence and then I'll pay an attorney to file the removal of conditions in a couple of year. [00:46] DaemonFC[m] This virus is fucking everything up. [00:46] DaemonFC[m] Meanwhile, in Indiana, you can go to the DMV like nothing is happening. [00:46] DaemonFC[m] They closed it here, but you can go to the mall if you want. This is pointless and stupid. [00:47] DaemonFC[m] The UK variant is confirmed in Colorado. [00:48] DaemonFC[m] They're trying to figure out who gave it to this guy, but the fact that he hasn't traveled anywhere means that there are too many clusters by now to stop it from becoming a big problem. Within 2 months it'll probably be responsible for at least two-thirds of new cases. [00:49] DaemonFC[m] The increased efficiency of spread means that it will spread as quickly as the old version would have had everyone taken their masks off. [00:49] DaemonFC[m] So we're in deep shit. [00:53] DaemonFC[m] I'm trying to assemble a photo album. I've never done this before. [00:54] DaemonFC[m] The photos are pretty disjointed so I don't know when any of them were taken beyond a general month. [14:06] DaemonFC[m] Cutting Windows 10 down to the point where it can only run UWP. Been there. Done that. They called it Windows RT and it was a disaster. They lost a lot of money. [14:07] DaemonFC[m] An unmitigated disaster at that. [14:08] DaemonFC[m] I ran into some people on Amazon forums when it existed who swore up and down that the Nokia X was a great platform and now that Microsoft had it they would keep it, then the same about Windows Phone and Windows 8 RT. [14:09] DaemonFC[m] The problem with these devices is they have no legacy and legacy is all Windows is good at. Without applications your computer doesn't do much and if all Microsoft can come at you with is Edge and Office 365, that's an immediate nonstarter. [14:10] DaemonFC[m] Microsoft had a marketing campaign for Windows 10 and they blew it. [15:41] DaemonFC[m] But like many people, they just never learn. More goes out than comes in. They could live well within their means, but it's never enough. [15:42] DaemonFC[m] I do all these little grocery rebates on my phone and in the last month I've gotten back over $87. They say you can give them your bank login, like that's going to happen. [15:42] DaemonFC[m] I just cash them out for Walmart gift cards and buy more groceries. [15:42] schestowitz DaemonFC[m]: can you test browser compat for me? [15:43] schestowitz which OS do you have and browser? [15:43] schestowitz it's for video compat I need testing [15:43] schestowitz FLAC/Ogg [15:43] schestowitz [15:41] Swamped with debt and treading water [15:43] schestowitz even literally [15:43] schestowitz all that money wasted on "Expensive water" will be regretted [15:44] schestowitz could be used to purchase edible goods, instead, when times get rough and she gets back to Tondo Lifestyle(TM). [15:44] MinceR also, i prefer "Felis silvestris catus" [15:44] MinceR since it's descended from Felis silvestris lybica [15:45] DaemonFC[m] Android, Linux, Windows. [15:45] MinceR and can interbreed with all of Felis silvestris, afaik [15:45] DaemonFC[m] All the usual suspects. [15:45] schestowitz can you try http://techrights.org/2020/12/30/how-to-freesw-video/ ? [15:45] -TechrightsBot-tr/#techrights-techrights.org | How We Record Videos With Very Low-Budget Gear and Only Free (Libre) Software | Techrights [15:45] DaemonFC[m] Flac in an Ogg container should even work with Edge or IE 11 on Windows 10 with the media codecs. [15:45] schestowitz it's still uploading the video, but should work for what's uploaded already [15:46] schestowitz in Firefox I get no picture, just audio [15:46] schestowitz FF ESR, Debian Buster [15:46] DaemonFC[m] Audio works on Firefox, but no video [15:47] DaemonFC[m] Edge is pretty much Chrome-compatible. Microsoft could have continued pouring money into fixing all of the bugs that Google deliberately puts into their products, but they didn't think there was a point any longer. [15:47] DaemonFC[m] It's even less different from Chrome than Vivaldi is. [15:49] DaemonFC[m] That's interesting. [15:49] DaemonFC[m] The video plays on Edge, but not Firefox. [15:49] *vZS1 has quit (Ping timeout: 246 seconds) [15:51] scientes ahhhhhh [15:51] DaemonFC[m] Yeah, just audio in Firefox. [15:51] scientes that is why Eor is a donkey [15:51] DaemonFC[m] 84.0.1 on Windows 10 [15:51] scientes donkeys are solidatary unlike horses [15:51] DaemonFC[m] I don't know what codecs they use. [15:51] DaemonFC[m] The platform ones usually. [15:52] DaemonFC[m] So that's strange, because Microsoft does not restrict access to those codecs from any applications. [15:52] schestowitz so basically this one is broken for Firefox [15:53] schestowitz in Falkon the videos did not play in their previous form [15:53] schestowitz but play OK now [15:53] scientes I want a unicorn for christmas [15:53] schestowitz some media player work with this, some do not [15:53] schestowitz in Falkon it now works, but not Firefox, so the compatibility got sort ot reversed [15:54] DaemonFC[m] Firefox reports that it supports Ogg Theora. [15:54] DaemonFC[m] I think that's the video codec here. [15:54] DaemonFC[m] VP9 should work on anything recent except for Safari. [15:55] scientes I wonder if people ride zebras [15:55] scientes that is an epic mount [15:55] DaemonFC[m] AV1 should work on really new browsers, including Safari I think because they're an AOM member now. [15:55] schestowitz In konqueror it does not play [15:55] *rianne_ has quit (Quit: Konversation terminated!) [15:55] *rianne_ (~rianne@host81-154-173-106.range81-154.btcentralplus.com) has joined #techrights [15:55] DaemonFC[m] The trouble with AV1 is that it's so new it's hard to play properly on older computers, even with dav1d. [15:56] DaemonFC[m] My 2016 laptop could barely handle it in standard definition with dav1d. [15:56] *rianne_ has quit (Client Quit) [15:56] DaemonFC[m] And it was not a bad laptop at the time. [15:56] schestowitz seems to boil down to balance and who gets shafted, or which browsers [15:56] *rianne_ (~rianne@host81-154-173-106.range81-154.btcentralplus.com) has joined #techrights [15:56] DaemonFC[m] To trade file size you have to massively increase encode/decode complexity. [15:56] schestowitz I cannot yet find a format that works well across OSes and browses... the patent mess has not helped, software patents that is [15:57] DaemonFC[m] And there's simply no way around it. So when they say efficient, it's more of a tradeoff. Less CPU/GPU efficient for a larger data reduction. [15:57] DaemonFC[m] If people still had large storage locally and weren't streaming, the demand for more computationally complex video codecs wouldn't be there. [15:58] DaemonFC[m] I think h264 would have been the last one and the focus would have been on just making the best possible encoder for that. [15:59] DaemonFC[m] It's still not a bad codec. It's patented though. Apple jammed it onto the web and actively resisted open media codecs, but the other browser vendors made sure that nothing newer than that was supported from MPEG. Apple has a lot of patents in the h264 pool, not as many on HEVC, and even less on VVC. ● Dec 30 [16:00] DaemonFC[m] So now that h264 patents are closer to sunset, they have less reason to actively refuse web compatibility and lower streaming bandwidth requirements that modern open codecs provide. [16:01] DaemonFC[m] They won, but since patents only last a set number of years and Apple is not even innovative enough to get a lot of patents these days (really says something, right?), they didn't come back for another round. [16:02] *vZS1 (~vZS1@host-92-20-231-81.as13285.net) has joined #techrights [16:03] DaemonFC[m] I'm honestly surprised that Microsoft didn't do a major push for Windows phones years before they did. They don't see anything coming. It's pathetic. [16:03] DaemonFC[m] The Xbox got off the ground because they had unlimited money to subsidize it back then until there just wasn't much competition anymore. [16:03] DaemonFC[m] They only compete in that sector of the market against one other console. [16:05] DaemonFC[m] AV1 unless it's pretty old. [16:05] DaemonFC[m] Anything older than a year or two and you start having major web compatibility problems these days. [16:06] DaemonFC[m] It's not a stable platform. The web platform might as well just be each release of Chrome now. [16:06] schestowitz avi seems not suitable for video embeds [16:06] *vZS1 has quit (Ping timeout: 246 seconds) [16:06] schestowitz maybe webm will be more widely supported [16:06] schestowitz but it's a very google-ish thing [16:06] schestowitz ogg is not [16:06] scientes WebM VP9 is what you want [16:06] DaemonFC[m] WebM with VP9 should work in anything not Safari. [16:06] schestowitz i wonder if ogg's money is still in ibm ('red hat') [16:07] DaemonFC[m] You'd have to host h264 or AV1 to deal with Safari. [16:07] schestowitz ok, maybe I'll change to webm then [16:07] DaemonFC[m] Yes, the FFMpeg project criticized VP8 severely. [16:07] scientes VP9 comes from Real Media people who were bought out by Google [16:08] scientes and when Google released VP9 is immediately obsoleted Theora (ogg video) [16:08] scientes or actually I think it is VP8 [16:08] DaemonFC[m] Probably the harshest point was that the specification is the C source code, so bugs in the C source code are the specification and cannot be fixed. [16:08] scientes VP9 is what they are now pushing [16:08] scientes but I think it got folded into av1 [16:11] DaemonFC[m] Safari supports VP9, but only as part of WebRTC. [16:11] DaemonFC[m] So they have a codec and they enforce an artificial restriction to avoid
