Hackaday ☛ Nanobots Self Replicate
Hey, what if you could have a factory that makes robots that is run by… robots? This is hardly an original thought, but we are a long way from having an assembly line of C3POs self-replicating. On the other hand, animals — including humans — self-replicate all the time using DNA. Now, scientists are making tiny nanorobots from DNA that can assemble more DNA, including copies of themselves.

Hackaday ☛ Clockhands For Faster CPU Execution
When you design your first homebrew CPU, you probably are happy if it works and you don’t worry as much about performance. But, eventually, you’ll start trying to think about how to make things run faster. For a single CPU, the standard strategy is to execute multiple instructions at the same time. This is feasible because you can do different parts of the instructions at the same time. But like most solutions, this one comes with a new set of problems. Japanese researchers are proposing a novel way to work around some of those problems in a recent paper about a technique they call Clockhands.

Delaware Republic ☛ After layoffs at Spotify, high interest rates may come for other tech companies next
Borrowers in the U.S. have been hit with higher interest rates this year as the Federal Reserve tries to push down inflation. And tech companies are no exception. Last week, Spotify announced it will cut roughly 17% of its workforce in its third round of layoffs this year. And the company CEO blamed higher borrowing costs as one of the reasons for the cuts. But Spotify isn't alone. Many tech companies borrowed and borrowed money when interest rates were low to grow business. Mark Williams is a professor of finance at Boston University's Questrom School of Business, and he joins us now. Welcome to the program.

the baby wants me to hold her for this nap so i am obliging.
i freaking spilled a pouch of breast milk that took me half an hour to pump. i hate pumping so much. but if i want to do things away from the baby for more than 2-3 hours, then i have to have milk to give her in case she gets hungry while i’m away.
i knew i wanted to breastfeed, but before i started i did not realize just how much it physically tied you to your baby. i remember being pregnant and thinking “i’m looking forward to having my body back to myself.” but it’s been 5.5 months since i gave birth, and it’s still not over yet because i’m breastfeeding. she still very much relies on my body even though she is outside of it. i still have to be conscientious of my caffeine and alcohol intake too. that part is probably good for me.

Horology
I've had an interest in timepieces ever since I was young, and in an entry the other day I said I was thinking about trying out watch repair. This weekend I started my studies by taking apart a mechanical movement and putting it back together again. It wasn't as easy as I thought it might be, but it wasn't too difficult either, and it was a good learning experience.

Winter
It seems as though as soon as we moved into December the temperature suddenly dropped: it's now 1c / 33f in the morning. The air is dry, the floors are cold and the days are short. Welcome to Winter.
-
Brrrr
The temperature here has dropped again, and now it feels like winter. Friday I was hot in a long-sleeved shirt and thin jacket. Today I was cold in a hat and coat and scarf and gloves.
Yesterday I went out for a walk around western Shinjuku. I think east of the station (i.e. Kabukicho) is where all the crowds are, but to the west of the station, especially past the government building, it's comparatively quiet.

We are materialists, in a (thus) materialist world
It's a weird pickle, because mostly-self-interested somebody's (aka "individuals") are the problem, and thus can/does their intervention only exacerbate.
The solution is to real-I-ze one isn't such a pathetic little beast, which - when *real* (hence the '*real*-I-ize', earlier) terminates the impetus to act out thusly.

30th Anniversary of DOOM
DOOM needs no introduction. It is a true pioneer of the first-person shooter genre and I'm sure that everyone who was gaming on their computer in the early 90s is familiar with it. Given the march of time, though, I'm increasingly wondering how well known it is to the younger folks. Nevertheless, the game still keeps popping up in various places, at least when people make it run on unexpected devices and in silly places like this:
