Bonum Certa Men Certa

Please Quit Uploading Event Talks (Especially of Free Software) to YouTube

Working hard for Google for free

Addicted To The PC

YouTube's user interface (UI or WebUI) is rapidly getting worse. It's meant to work for Google and for advertisers, not for YOU. In fact YOUTube was never free hosting for videos; it was all along a ticking time bomb and nowadays even videos uploaded 15+ years ago have ads added to them (without even asking the person who uploaded them 15+ years ago). They sell your data, your "content"... everything! Just to be clear, the money they make this way they get to keep (100%, plus perks of corporate tax evasion); the people who made the videos receive a 0% "cut". They're not even consulted about this. On top of it, Google deranks, demonetises, deletes videos (censorship gets worse over time; things permissible a year ago might run afoul of YouTube's "community guidelines" this year, rules then be applied retroactively to old material, potentially resulting in channel bans).

Not only does Google kill free/libre gateways; it's also bombarding with nags like these people who surrender and use the proprietary UI: (because Invidious stopped working)

YouTube's multi-step nags

There are variations of the above and multi-step nags. I didn't take screenshots of all of them.

Did the speakers at that event know that Google would add advertisements to their talks? To sell all sorts of junk, ranging from holidays to penis pumps or whatever?

See, when you upload a video to YOUTube you have no control over what will happen to it in the future and how it'll make YOU look.

Just wanted to watch a talk about Free software and they're pushing "attestation"-like nonsense, repeatedly, trying to tell me how to use Firefox and what to disable in order to carry on watching.

This is enshittification. It'll get worse and worse over time until skipping isn't an option at all. Google is overzealous about people watching lots of ads without walking away or skipping them.

Remember this: YOU are nobody to YOUTube. Get YOUsed to it. They USE YOU.

If you organise an event, please do not outsource the videos of the talks to GAFAM. It's potentially disrespectful.
